How To Build A Hobbit House In Your Backyard

30-year-old Ashley Yeates is not a hobbit. Ashley, from Bedford, England, is a design and construction expert who’s much too big to be a hobbit. However, rumor has it his feet might be just as hairy–but despite these shortcomings, he decided to build a “hobbit hole” in his garden, a DIY project that took almost a year to complete. After a tree died in the yard, he decided a hobbit house was just the thing to take its place!

Many readers have commented that the backyard DIY will suffer from water damage. Yeates explains the waterproofing procedure on his blog: “We created a strong internal wooden frame which was hugely over-engineered…The corrugated iron was used to seal everything in this home project, and the panels were all seam welded from top to bottom once in position and then finished with plenty of waterproof barriers. The base concreted with waterproofer and finished with further waterproofing and finally a leveling compound, so there was a lovely clean finish inside.”

Over time, I transitioned through different roles until I eventually became the Content Lead. In this position, I now oversee the creation of the viral content published here on Bored Panda. While my primary focus lies in raising awareness about important social issues like gender and race equality, as well as mental health topics, I also enjoy sharing lighter content, such as memes, cat images and intriguing world curiosities. Outside of work, you'll likely find me engaged in one of five activities: planning a vacation, browsing thrift stores, experimenting in the kitchen, watching movies, or spending quality time with my two cats.

That's wonderful! May I ask you how did you isolate the floor from the ground? And are the wooden poles resisting against humidity after some time?

a question. because under the ground? if it rains you find yourself with water at home. It was no better onvece build the house and then throw over the earth like a little hill, at least the little road was downhill towards outside and the rain would not enter from the door

This was such a cool story! I love seeing how creative people can be and how they can create such beauty. I recently did a piece on a mural that was painted on our school campus, West Virginia University, (https://morgantownunseenscene.wordpress.com/2016/03/31/wvus-mural-in-the-mountains/) and it inspired me, as did this post. Thanks for writing this!

The construction of the roof hurts my OCD, why not just use a 90 degree setup covering the whole area?
