Stunning Or Gross? Taiwanese Photographer Explores Issues Of Womanhood

Yung Cheng Lin, also known as “3cm”, is an extremely talented Taiwanese photographer. She explores the topics of womanhood – sexuality, birth, menstruation, maturity, the obstacles in front of women and the expectations towards them in today’s society.

In sometimes disturbing and surreal photos, he succeeds in touching us deeply, make us stop and think. All this is done by using everyday objects, simple colors and the magic of light. And unlike many others who try to stand out by simply shocking the audience, Yung Cheng Lin gives us something more than that – the sparkle that evokes sensation of delicacy and rebellion, the sparkle of a true talent.

I guess to some people its artistic but it just puts me off. Its obviously supposed to be edgy...but to me its over the top for no reason other than to be over the top...and get people talking about it.

Art's job is to make people think and maybe open up a dialogue. It did its job.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who had an issue with that! Like, these are issues women face, there's nothing gross about it unless you're referring to the fact that women are overly sexualized, which is something these photos suggest.

Real art is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. You cannot just tell someone what to think or feel.

These pictures are are so powerful, beautiful. A lot of people are complaining that it's gross, or unfeminine, but that's the point! Art is supposed to be disturbing sometimes, it peels back the falseness and shows the raw truth, disturbing the comfortable and comforting the disturbed.

it just made me think womanhood is gross, reminding me of a s**t, there's always flies around it, which is really disturbing and i find it offensive as a woman (and im actually hard in any way basically cause i dont give too many f***s, yet im surprised this upset me, specially knowing this is "art".. and there aint anything more subjective than art) oh well.

Some of these photos were disturbing and degrading, (not by the artist, but by socially imposed beauty standards that he is accentuating) but they all, at the same time, brought truth back in society's standards of the female population. The artist is free to express his art in any form he chooses, but this is not something that I would be interested in viewing at my local galleries. I do think it is bold and makes a statement. He seems to have good ideas throughout his body of work but I don't care for his form of expression.

I will admit the idea is interesting and the concept of each photo entertaining at best, but it lose some, I don't know, grip, or edges, I guess. It probably means to be edgy, but there's not much atmosphere and mood. It doesn't have much senses of "sharpness" I wished to see in these kind of photos. Really, give it some intensity and I would like it better. But, I'm just someone who seen it that way. Then again, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. :)
