This 9-Year-Old Girl’s Face Was Used To Promote Abortion, So Her Mom Got Brilliant Revenge

You never know when a disgusting creep will appear from a dark corner of the internet. Using its anonymous nature, keyboard warriors are sharing some of the most disturbing thoughts they have, and even little kids can become subjects of their hateful treatment. Recently, Twitter trolls used a picture of Sophia, a severely disabled 9-year-old girl to promote abortion. Her mom, Natalie Weaver, responded in a way every mother would – she started a war against hate speech.

Sophia was born with facial deformities as well as deformities to her hands and feet. When she turned one, the girl was diagnosed with Rett syndrome, a brain disorder that permanently affects children’s language and motor functions. As a result, Sophia needs her family to take care of her 24/7.

“She’s had 22 surgeries,” Weaver told CNN. “She has a feeding tube. A colostomy bag. She has seizures and choking spells because of both the deformities and the rare genetic disorder.”

Everything began after changes to healthcare coverage in their area were proposed. As a healthcare activist, Weaver started to speak out more about Sophia’s genetic disorders, and it wasn’t long until trolls targeted the little girl. “People, they seek you out and want to hurt you,” Weaver said. “Some people go out of their way to make sure you see their cruelty. I get people telling me to kill my child, to put her out of her misery.”

One attacker really wanted to be heard. Not only did they share Sophia’s photo along with a paragraph supporting coerced abortion, but they also tagged Weaver’s Twitter handle and sent her a direct message.

“I blocked it. I just hoped it was gone,” the mother said. “But it was never removed. The account remained.” Weaver claimed Twitter had even sent her a message saying the post did not violate their policies.

Time passed, but the tweet was still up, and the hurtful account behind it was still active. “[The troll] was mentioning my name and reaching out to my followers on Twitter,” Weaver said.

The original tweet with Sophia’s photo attached to it kept haunting Weaver. She asked people to report it and even told her story to a local news station, hoping to put enough pressure on Twitter it would take everything down. After about a week and a half of nonstop coverage Weaver got, she received another message from Twitter. They apologized, they removed the offensive post, and they suspended the account it came from.

Satisfied with the result, Weaver started talking about the way Twitter review such content. “Twitter needs to add people with disabilities as a category in their violation reporting,” she said. “Otherwise people don’t know the appropriate category to select for hate towards disabled people.”

A company’s spokesperson pointed out to CNN the platform’s “hateful conduct policy.” It says, “You may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people by race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease.” “All of these considerations are taken into account when reviewing reported violations of the Twitter Rules,” the spokesperson said.

I'm all for making abortion legal, accessible and taboo-free (if we can't save both the mother and the baby, let's save the mother at least), but THIS is not the way to promote such things. That kid is a live human being with a loving family who chose to keep and raise her. It's not just a number, give them some dignity.

Yes. Very true. It's amazing that they fought against that. Those r probably the best parents that little angel could've EVER asked for.

..... ...... Unpopular opinion that I will be crucified for: I believe that euthanizing the severely disabled can be justified. Maybe it's a little utilitarian, but I do not believe that society should have to pay for someone who will never pay it back. This isn't ALL mental illnesses, only the very severe ones where a person would never have the thinking capacity of more than a toddler. Also, I feel like the framing of the story is making people not admit this, but she is utterly terrifying. I am sorry, but I have never experienced that sort of visceral fear looking at a picture in years. Perhaps it's not logical, but I feel like it's weird that people won't admit that. It's irrelevant to whether or not you support aborting or euthanizing disabled children - you can think positively about that but still admit that her appearance is ... unpleasant.

Wow. Someone being honest. Respect to you...and compassion to the girl. Far as she goes...those pictures were really....disturbing to look at, have to admit that. Of course it's also a matter of habit but I am struggling with the idea of someone calling her beautiful based on these pics. Naturally that doesn't mean she can't be a great person and beautiful on the inside, it also absolutely doesn't mean people should just call her out on all that(that speaks more about those people than it does about), but perhaps let's not turn being nice and accepting into outright lying.

I can't believe this tenacious mother had to even do that much work for a website to simple remove her child's photo. What a beautiful family they are, and you can tell the girl is living her best life possible.

It's a very real concern for many families with children of mental and physical disabilities. There are group homes, but those cost money, and as someone already stated, the social safety net is constantly being attacked. People don't understand that they harm these types of people when they attack those who they perceived as lazy and mooching off the system.

so we have a person who doesnt only have an external disability, but someone whose brain barely functions. so lets give birth to it? lets make our and their and everyones life miserable? just so we can feel good about ourselves for a moment? a seed is not a flower. a fetus is not a person. i am a father to be, and if something was wrong with the fetus in my wife's tummy, we would have ended it. both for it's and our sake.

That's the parents choice though. For some women (myself included) it would be very traumatic and difficult to get an abortion. Obviously this sort of situation isn't what anyone wants or expects when they get pregnant, and sometimes the extent of a deformity isn't clear until birth. I'm pro choice and support parents whatever decision they would make in a difficult case like this. Either way it isn't easy.

Sophia's family posted photos of a child I quite frankly see as someone I'd want to hug. However, there are bad people out here who'll exploit wherever possible. They STOLE a stranger's child to further their own beliefs, and continued even after being told to stop. (How would these people feel if someone exploited their best friend's child?) Unfortunately, this is exactly why I can't bring myself to upload the photo of any minor, even on my Friends Only social media account. I won't upload childhood photos of adult friends, either. Even though I'm an adult, some creep could still enjoy a stolen photo of me. Thank goodness Sophia's got advocates to fight for her! Sophia's parents made a decision to post their adorable child. They did NOT make a decision for anyone else to utilize the photos. I can't use the words "exploit" or "steal" enough. (This post has nothing to do with any of my beliefs, just adding to the support for Sophia and her family!)

I feel so sorry for poor little Sophia. At first I thought "Oh, no, what happened with her?". After that I went on to educate myself on the nature of her disease and learned the sad truth. Life must be very difficult for her but it's so heart-warming her family helps her and sees her for the amazing person she truly is. And she is smiling everyday no matter of all the difficulties! I now feel awful for getting startled at first. :( Good luck, Sophia and always keep the fighting spirit in you!

MENTAL ILLNESS is _NOT_ the same as COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES!!! In the _1970's_ people sometimes incorrectly used "mental illness" for someone with cognitive disabilities. The proper term in the 1970's was "mental retardation," the term still used in many medical and legal situations which is being replaced with the more precise "cognitive developmental disabilities". It is very disappointing to see such ignorance displayed in several comments to this story, incorrectly using "mental illness". This is not a language barrier issue, either, as "mental illness" and "mental retardation" are so medically different that the terms are not actually interchangeable in any language.

Shame on you, Bored Panda! Your headline for this story is so misleading and inaccurate. It is sad that some sick person sent death wishes to this little girl, and people that do such things should be punished, or, at the very least, ostracized. However, BP's headline made it sound as if someone had used the child to promote access to legal abortions. This is patently false. Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy before a fetus is born. What the twitter scumbag was promoting was not abortion, but involuntary euthanasia of a living child, i. e., the killing of a person long after her birth.

“One attacker really wanted to be heard. Not only did they share Sophia’s photo along with a paragraph supporting coerced abortion, they tagged Weaver’s Twitter handle and sent her a direct message”. So the title is in reference to at least one person saying that coerced abortions are good; that if a woman discovers her baby is deformed (etc), an abortion should be mandatory.

I'm 110% pro-choice when it comes to this issue, but it takes a TRULY SICK F**K to promote it like this. There's no way you could be pro or anti-abortion and claim to believe in the "sanctity of life", if you're attacking this family and suggesting that this little girl be killed. That's edging way too close to eugenics...suggesting that only the "PERFECT" among us should survive.

Abortion because of sickness IS EUGENICS. Whatever you like it or not - it is. You decided what can live and who not based on their health.

I cannot believe the comments on this. They act like this is an animal that just needs to be taken care of. This is a CHILD!! This wasn't even a statement of abortion, it was a statement of euthanasia. Lord help these people if they ever have children that do not fit their expectations of normal. As a parent you will do everything possible to take care of your child and make them comfortable. She loves her daughter and it's obvious that she loves them too. Even with disabilities they can love and feel love.

Others would made a different choice. there is no excuse for the ugliness she has had to put up with. I hate to seem like a monster but I hope they understand that seeing her will scare the living hell out of other children and causing endless trauma for them. Also these parents are heroic and saintly ' for not having an abortion but their daughter has a very poor quality of life and the family will have crippling medical bills and be alienated from other people even once friends and family of theirs . And if the girl isn't suffering it's obviously because she has the I.Q. of a baby and always will. Lets see how upbeat and patient her parents are when she's 30. ..

People mix up eugenics with abortion. Abortion is the right to one's own body. Eugenics is the opposite. In fact it's worse because it takes agency away from a woman's body. It's disgusting to even think that this little girl and her family are up for grabs in this discussion. Their choice.

"Abortion is the right to one's own body" - and how fetus is part of mother's body? Last time i check fetus has own DNA, in 50% of cases - different gender then mother. It is in NO WAY "a woman's body". Abortion based of whatever fetus is healthy or not IS eugenics.

Late to the party but just came across this story. What's sad is this poor kid had no choice but to endure dozens upon dozens of painful surgeries, force feedings, and was immobilized for what? I think hospice should have been called from the start, it's completely unethical what the doctors and parents put her through just to give themselves a pat on the back. And no, that is not "smiling", her face is stuck that way. If someone ripped the flesh of your mouth off in the upper corner it would give you a permanent gruesome grin on your face. That's pure selfishness to bring something into the world that is not compatible with any kind of existence, and continually slice her with scalpels no matter how much pain she's already suffering. I think it's obscene and maybe should be rejected by insurance if they know from dna/ultrasound the kid is going to suffer such a horrific disability. This is not a GiFt fRoM gOd, it's a travesty, and the mom finally put her out of her misery last year.

a trend I see in the comments, a valid one at that, is mostly the question of "how can disabled people be cared for/worth caring for depending on the severity of their disability. I support abortion at it's fullest, but killing a baby after being born, it's murder. As cruel as my words may sound, this little angel was sent to let suicidal people appreciate life a bit more and that we shouldn't take anything for granted. If she can above all be happy, so should we. She's not a sample for abortion, she's a sample of life. Embrace yourself as you are and live your life as well as you can.

But, not wanting to get in any discusion, -I- would prefer to not be born if i would had to pass my life without any strengh, control or capability to take care of myself and completely on my own. I guess that is something that nobody can choose for you.

I stand by my opinion that abortion is ever women's right. But using a random stranger's child - with some sort of disablility, or deformed body - as an ad for your abortion clinic, is definitely uncalled for, and evil.

Hi everyone, I am Sharon. from Poland I want to use this medium to appreciate Dr Ogbeifun the great black magic death spells caster for the successful death spells he cast on someone for me. I contacted him when my husband left me for another woman who uses witchcraft power to take my husband. I was desperately in need of help when I found his contacts online about his genuine powers. I told him my situation and how I wanted the b***h who took my husband gone. He told me not to worry. He cast the death spells ritual on her and the b***h died in her sleep within 24hours. Now my husband is back home and we are living happily. Thank you so much Dr Ogbeifun, You are so real and true. Below is his contacts in case you want to contacts him Call/WhatsApp: +2348102574680

Anyone who thinks these pictures are "disturbing " doesn't know what true love is. I look at this girl and think she is so beautiful. She is loved and loves her family. Her life has tremendous meaning and value. This family is amazing and the love shared is very powerful.

Why are some people so mean? They make fun of her in the meanest way EVER! But they are blind! She is beautiful and strong! She is strong for being able to smile during these times and with people making fun! And she has the most beautiful heart I have ever seen! She is so lucky to have people see how she really is, A brave, beautiful, sweet girl! She is like the rest of us! Shame on those who judge by looks alone!

I have been reading, and occasionally commenting on, other people's comments. How can so many people be so cruel and heartless towards this happy little girl and her family? What is wrong with this world nowadays that would cause people to say such horrible things about a child? All these people talking about KILLING a little girl, calling it euthanasia. First, some sicko uses Mom's picture of her child for their own sick agenda. Then Mom has to fight Twitter to get it taken it down. And now she and the rest of the family have to deal with all these "adult?" bullies and haters. I am so disgusted by some of these comments, it makes me want to cry. I am disabled, should I be euthanized?? I have been in a couple of major car wrecks in my life that left my back all messed up. I have Fibromyalgia also. It's like every nerve ending in my body shooting off pain signals at the same time. I suffer from pain 24/7. Does that make me less than? I also have Bi-Polar, PTSD, and OCD.

Luckily I have good doctor's, and a really good psychiatrist who finally figured out how to level out the mental problems. I haven't been manic or depressed in years. So mentally, I'm doing pretty good. Still, they want to call that a disability. So I am going to have to take meds for my entire life. Both for the pain and the mental c**p. All of these illnesses are invisible, you can't tell just by looking at me. It's not immediately noticeable, yet still, ALL of my doctors tell me I am disabled. I have to be very careful because there are some things I'm not supposed to do anymore. Does that make me less than? Should I be euthanized? Put out of my misery? 5 years ago I wanted to be put out of my misery. But now, HELL NO, I'M NOT READY to lay down and die. Even with all my issues, I want to live. And I want to be here if my daughter needs me. She is now 23 years old, married, and has her RN license. I have something to live for, and so does this precious little girl.

Throwing in my two cents, as someone that "society pays for". Yes, I'm on SSI. I make a little bit of money working at home as an editor. I have a rare neurological condition called NF2. Benign (slow growing, but still need to be watched with bi annual MRIs and CT scans) tumors all down my spine and in my brain. Went totally deaf at eighteen. My balance sucks. I've had ten surgeries to remove offending tumors because as of now that is the only treatment for NF2 other than a non-FDA approved kind of chemo called Avastin. The disease has not rendered me mentally deficient in any way but that has not stopped turds from asking if I'm "r******d"., including an ex. Between all of that and being put to death at birth I'll pick the forest of c**p. Yes my life is challenging. That does not mean I am not worth life.

The stupidest part of all this: They had no expectation their daughter had anything wrong with her before she was born. Abortion would not have been in the picture because the parents WANTED this child, and even when she had birth defects and a genetic syndrome, they still want her. If you look at the history of the anti-abortion movement, it's rooted in a religious reaction against a very common ancient practice: exposing unwanted children. It was the standard practice for a child who was unwanted for any reason to be abandoned on a hillside or similar place where wild animals would eat it. For those who admire Sparta ... every child born there was checked for imperfections by the ruling council and "bad" ones were "exposed." And, for people who find her appearance disturbing ... yeah, it's disturbing. Too bad. If it offends you, then don't look, or if you can't overcome your distaste, stab your eyes out before you presume to tell ANYONE they should murder their living child.

Unfortunately, a******s come in every shape, color, religion, sex, and political belief. I favor choice 100% and it's up to the parents to decide what is best for them and their family. To use someone else's treasured child as a reason for an abortion is abhorrent and cruel.

im confused now. society IS trash, but it seems like as soon as this thing comes up, its shot down. almost like the majority of society isnt bad. but i know better, so it feels like, maybe some of the people on here dont actually care, they just want to make themselves sound better online. in my opinion, its a gift to be born so different. that gives you a light different then everyone elses, and the wieght of being like everyone else, is never created. its coll, and unique, despite the pain, to have something like that. and when you look at her shining face, if you truly are a good person, you will see a light, happiness, and beauty like no other.

Oh dear. That's just...poor girl :( At least she got super lucky with her family it seems like. And...it doesn't mention it openly but from the tone I assume her brain is more or less functioning aside from speech/movement issues, so she realizes herself and surroundings and whatnot?...assuming that's the case, I just really hope she never gets to the point where she'd regret her parents not aborting her :/ And no, this is not an evil wish at all. That was just my first thought after reading this. I hope she can perhaps get better with time and medicine, not give up and live a happy and fulfilling life despite everything...although in all fairness, I don't know how realistic it is. This is just so very sad.

During this Easter season, I can only think about what Christ taught us about love. Sophia has one of the most wonderful and caring families I have ever seen. We need to have compassion for Sophia and her difficulties, but also for her loving, patient and sacrificing family. Maybe children like Sophia are here to teach us about acceptance and love. Unfortunately, many have failed this lesson.

abortion is often nessesary. perhaps this family can afford her medical care, but a lot wouldn't be able to. for the parents, knowing what the child is going through every day can cause serious trauma. sometimes its dangerous for the mother to actually give birth. i believe in abortion, but you shouldnt give up a baby just because they might look ugly or something like that. you should give up a baby for a good reason- abortion also has to be approved by many medical proffesionals.

I think, that true beauty, is in the eyes of God, and not human beings! God doesn’t make mistakes! Sophie has some awful things to deal with, but she deals and comes out the other side, Happy, cheerful and full of life. Her spirit is such a joy, and I’m glad you all, her family, see this shining spirit! I think, one of the best things for me in my life, would be to see her smile, roll her eyes, and laugh! This world needs to learn what true beauty is,

Honestly I believe that abortion is flat out, no excuses, murder. You're killing an innocent child just because you don't want to own up and take responsibility for what you did...there are some cases I understand like if one or both of them will 100% die but...idk I just hate all these idiots out there gettin abortions just because they were stupid and don't want to take responsibility for what they did or the child has some sort of disorder.. Its also sad to see women being forced to do it. Most pro-abortionists have never had an abortion. Those women have to go through therapy because of what they did.

The question of abortion or euthanization of a seriously deformed fetus must be answered first by the mother and perhaps the father. There is no perfect answer to this awful question. Abortion of a healthy fetus is a different question altogether. Perhaps this question could be considered by an agency to be formed that would ensure adoption of infants who are born to mothers who cannot or will not care for them.

Meanwhile those "mothers" are forced to spend nine months pregnant and deal with the fact that thier bodies may never recover because someone else wants them to not have an abortion? Pregnancy is a dangerous thing to go through, especially if you're a raped 12 year old whose body isn't mature enough to handle the process etc... Abortion is a choice that initially belongs to the mother. When it gets far enough into the pregnancy for these illnesses and deformities to be detected it is often a shared or weighted decision between the medical team and the mother/parents. At the end of the day though, when it comes to abortion the opinion that matters is that of the mother. It's her body and her right to decide whether or not she is in a place where she can carry a baby to term. No one has the right to force her to.

Life must be very difficult for her but it's so heart-warming her family helps her and sees her for the amazing person she truly is. And she is smiling everyday no matter of all the difficulties!

Just was is wrong with the society now? Insulting a harmless girl with a facial deformity? Posting insulting and heartbreaking comments? Where did your morals go?! What if you were like that and the internet was making fun of you? What more can I say? Sorry, I had to rant, but this society we're living in is really screwed up.

Eugenics is nothing new, it started in XIX century. Killing people based of their "quality of life" is nothig new and it's definitly not only today's society fault.

So you're saying that it's ok to euthanize animals for the fact that they are not wanted? Sorry but animals share the same characteristics as humans and can feel just as much.

This woman exercised her RIGHT TO CHOOSE. She chose to bring her little girl into the world, and to love and care for her. Others would made a different choice. there is no excuse for the ugliness she has had to put up with. I'll also bet money that the idiot POSTING the garbage is NOT a pro-choice supporter, but someone just trying to make the pro-choice side look bad.

How can she be "really'" happy now or later , she will never have a real life as as a human being, no lover and no children, she will always depend on others to take care of her, is this what you call being happy

WHAT ABOUT YOUR F*****G MILITARY that attacks other nations and creates THOUSANDS of disabled children? Do you petition for them or do you complement your f*****g "vets" for "protecting your land" from some non-existent "terrorists"?! Suddenly everyone on here is sooooo humanitarian and generous about the health-care that this girl should receive, forgetting that your tax money goes into funding WARS & MURDER across the sea! I assume you are directing this towards Americans. Yes, I have cousins in Yemen. Or did. Who knows if they are alive? We haven't heard from them in a few years. (They are my first cousin's children.) And if they are dead, I am partly responsible. My tax money helped kill them. And I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW until a few months ago that the US was involved. I despise myself. I really do.

Some people are disgustingly, gut churningly ugly, but their ugliness is in their character and personality. Persons with external appearances that might make you uncomfortable exist. Your choices are to avoid such a person, look away, or grow as a human being and learn to be more compassionate.

a trend I see in the comments, a valid one at that, is mostly the question of "how can disabled people be cared for/worth caring for depending on the severity of their disability. I think/KNOW the issue lies not in disabled people, obviously, but in our world itself. Sorry, I just think its an overlooked fact that should be added...

it does not matter what she looks like. Many times, kids with special needs give us more than we offer. They have an incredibly ability for being happy all the time. You both, as parents, are AMAZING, and thanks for taking her as just as she is and making her comfortable. I would really like that she does not suffer much, that she has no pain.

Too bad. If it offends you, then don't look, or if you can't overcome your distaste, stab your eyes out before you presume to tell ANYONE they should murder their living child.

im confused now. society IS trash, but it seems like as soon as this thing comes up, its shot down. almost like the majority of society isnt bad. but i know better, so it feels like, maybe some of the people on here dont actually care, they just want to make themselves sound better online. in my opinion, its a gift to be born so different. that gives you a light different then everyone elses, and the wieght of being like everyone else, is never created. its coll, and unique, despite the pain, to have something like that. and when you look at her shining face, if you truly are a good person, you will see a light, happiness, and beauty like no other.

In this case, more than ever, beauty and cuteness are in the eyes of the beholders, which in this case are a drooling army.

This girl is beautiful. I don't believe in abortion for any reason - I think it is the murder of an unborn child - and possibly a grave sin, but that's just my opinion. All those people who wrote those horrible things about that girl and her family - they are the ugly ones! Beauty is as beauty does.

abortion is often nessesary. perhaps this family can afford her medical care, but a lot wouldn't be able to. for the parents, knowing what the child is going through every day can cause serious trauma. sometimes its dangerous for the mother to actually give birth. i believe in abortion, but you shouldnt give up a baby just because they might look ugly or something like that. you should give up a baby for a good reason- abortion also has to be approved by many medical proffesionals.

"take responsibility for what you did"...what about rape? Incest? Rape of a little girl that ends up in pregnancy? And seriously, no child should be born into the world unwanted.

Sometimes i think far-left and far-right are the same, people looking for excuse to incite violence, exclusion and forcing their opinion. few days earlier i read a women kept her fox on vegan diet saying all animals should be respected and now this.

More nonsense from a guy with a dongle who never had to carry anything heavier than a full bladder. Keep jabbering. It's hilarious.

Ugliness is not of the flesh it is of the heart, the people who see ugliness in this beautiful child are only seeing the reflection of their ugly hearts. The have hearts full of contempt, selfishness and murder and would not hesitate to deprive this child of life they are the monsters not this child. She is an ambassador to all those willing to understand that if there is any chance for mankind to heal and survive it will be through love not hate.

I'm all for choice. Right or Wrong, it's not my place to dictate that but that site is a Progressive Site and they care nothing for the dignity of other people. It's because of the Progressives that I will never be a Democrat.

Ok being Progressive is NOT the same as being an insensitive a*****e. That is a huge inaccurate generalization that only applies to CERTAIN people. Just because a group has "those", which every group does, does not mean they define everyone as a whole.

I think that abortion is only good if you know the child will suffer and die within a week. If Sophia has lived this long than abortion wasn't necessary.

She doesn't deserve hate, but she also doesn't deserve to be lied to and told that she's beautiful, she is spunky and amazing in her own right.

There's a difference between being honest and being a d**k. You're just being a d**k.
