Any boss can make their employees’ lives heaven or hell, depending on what they’re like as a person and how they manage their people. Unfortunately, the world’s full of truly awful bosses. They think that the word ‘leadership’ doesn’t apply to them. Instead of inspiring and motivating their workers, they patronize, insult, and micromanage them. And any and all respect goes flying out the window.

One way that managers reveal their true feelings, and their deep disdain for their employees is through the notes and signs that they put up, whether inside or outside. Sam Dogen, the author of 'Buy This, Not That: How to Spend Your Way to Wealth and Freedom' and the founder of 'Financial Samurai,' shared his thoughts with us about how employees can earn their bosses' respect, what bosses can do to inspire them, the importance of patience, and some of the differences in work ethic between the younger and older generations. Financial expert and author Sam explained to Bored Panda that when it comes to work, it's a never-ending activity with to end goal in sight. And ain't that true! "There is always something new to create or something more to sell. Therefore, having an employee with a great attitude is the best," he noted that a person's attitude is incredibly important in the workplace.

"Bosses can inspire their employees by giving a damn as well! If the boss is always coming in on time, taking their subordinates out for lunch to see how they are doing, and works hard, employees will be inspired. And when employees are inspired, they will care more and do better work. It is a virtuous cycle," he said that employees value their superiors spending their time with them and giving them attention. "Great bosses lead by example. They are not micromanagers either. Instead, they are honest about difficult situations, believe in their employees, support their employees, and engender trust."

Bored Panda was interested to get Sam's take on how different generations view work from a different angle. The 'Financial Samurai' founder told us that he's a member of Gen X, turning 45 this summer, and this is the only generation that he knows very well. However, he did see oversee some younger employees at work.

"We grew up without the internet and now have the internet," he said about Gen X. "I did manage a couple of employees who were 10 years younger than me, hence the millennial generation. One got in trouble because he felt entitled to a much larger bonus than $20,000 after his first year out of college! After he got his bonus, he refused to come to work for a week. That was an interesting situation," he shared an unusual case of entitlement.

"It seems like more employees want to reach the corner office sooner, without putting in their dues. This may be perhaps due to the internet, social media, and how quickly information is disseminated. When you see someone on social media get super-rich quickly, you start feeling the same way too."

While I can understand that the distraction of having boyfriends loitering around the store while the employees are trying to work can be cause for concern, the boss can talk to them—-calmly and without the attitude displayed on this sign—-and maybe limit them to short visits. There are ways to talk to people that don’t involve insults and anger. Obviously, this boss is someone who should never be in a position of authority, as they don’t know how to be an effective leader. I’m 61 now. I went back to college as a freshman at 51 (college wasn’t possible for me at 18), and sat in class with people as young as 18. Because I was always straight with them, wasn’t condescending or dismissive, didn’t play “us vs them” with our respective generations, and considered myself as nothing more than one of their fellow students, I got along really great with them. If older people would just lose the stereotypical “these damn kids these days” attitude, and the younger people would lose their own “OK Boomer” attitude, we’d get along better, and accomplish more together than we’ve ever been able to apart.

You are correct - I'm 70 years old, and I've personally never had a problem with much younger co-workers because I treated them with respect as individuals. However in this case, the manager may have tried the respectful route many times, and finally lost his temper. None of us here witnessed the interaction at the store, so we truly cannot judge what actually went down. And having boyfriends (or girlfriends) loitering can also be a huge liability issue for the company.

I remember my bf showing up at all my jobs, uninvited. Not the whole shift, but every day, for an hour or 2. He wouldn't just stop when I told him to, and decided it was cute at the time. But looking back it's a sign of control.

this was at a Dollar Tree in my area. whole city, especially this location, is rife with assaults and harassment of workers. recently there has been a huge uptick in shootings. even for us, used to one or more a day, it's a lot. nobody in corporate will spring for loss prevention or security of any kind ANYWHERE below a certain street, leaving small 18yo girls to confront thieves and erratic customers- often grown men. the front doors at this f*****g place are busted in so often they can't even remove and hide from violent customers. anyone who wants to cry that these girls are failures somehow- p**s yourself.

That is a huge pet peeve of mine, going to the store or some other place and have the cashier or waiter etc have friends hanging around with them. As a manager I have had to chase them off a number of times. It is called work, not socialize with your friends who do not work here, are not buying anything, and who are preventing you from helping the paying customers.

Let's be fair, I somewhat understand this employer. I guess good GenZ are already employed so you only have irresponsible ones. Older employees do have a bit more sens when it comes to responsibility. I speak of experience here were I got hired with two younger employees and ... they drove forklift while facetiming and had no concept of "Don't stand in the way of a coming forklift".

Only if the 'hour or so' is their break otherwise the boyfriends will see them in their own time outside of work. I mean, come on! The odd visit for something important or urgent would be okay but let the person do their job without a partner clinging on. Rather sad if you can't be apart for the length of the working day. It smacks of control issues as well. I know this won't always be the case but the only woman I worked with who had a partner regularly hanging about was being thumped by him.

Bored Panda recently spoke about communication at work, quitting, and how to handle difficult bosses with workplace expert and author Lynn Taylor. She stressed that employees should try to be as diplomatic as they can, while at the same time drawing a line in the sand when it comes to bullying and outright disrespect.

“The best way to quit is to think about how you want to be remembered. Every industry in a given city has a relatively small network of good people. We have all heard 'it’s a small world' and the '6 degrees of separation.' As satisfying as it feels to 'put a bad boss in their place' upon departure, leave those fantasies in your mind,” Lynn explained to us during a recent exclusive interview that restraint is a very powerful tool in a worker’s arsenal.

“You never want to burn your bridges or get a reputation for being a troublemaker. It will get around and hurt your career," the workplace expert pointed out that an employee’s reputation follows them for years to come. Especially if it’s a niche industry.

"Your best bet is to thank your boss for the opportunity at the company and limit the number of negative comments you offer. It is unlikely to change behavior in a significant way. Be glad that you’ve decided to take the difficult step of moving on," the expert said that a bit of gratitude might be better than brutal honesty. In some cases. However, this doesn’t mean that you should bend over and grovel at your boss’ feet every time they walk by.

One way to communicate work issues to your manager or boss might be to use so-called ‘positive bookends’ (aka the criticism sandwich approach). You could try something like this: "'I really enjoy my job, but there’s something that set me back a bit recently.' Enter: your beef. Wrap with: 'Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to me… I very much appreciate your efforts in trying to work better together.'"
