Meet Beaux Tox, a Labrador Retriever who was born with a facial deformity and experienced a life of constant rejection and neglect, until he found Jamie Hulit, his soul mate and a true best friend.

Beaux was born with his unique features, a result of being squashed in his mothers womb as one of six pups. “He just kind of got pushed out of the way, and formed how he formed,” Jamie told The Dodo. This was just the beginning of a life of being pushed around for Beaux, whose intelligence and bubbly personality were not affected by the deformity.

“Because of his facial deformity, the people who were breeding couldn’t sell him,” Jamie explained. “So they gave him away for free.” Beaux ended up living with a man who neglected him and left him outside, all alone, for 5 years. He was neglected to the extent that local rescue groups tried to intervene, without success, and all that was left of Beaux was a sad, disease and parasite-ridden bag of bones without a shred of hope left.

And then his guardian angel arrived. Jamie was undeterred by Beaux’s desperate state, and was determined to give him a second chance. “I didn’t care how badly he might be ill,” she said. “I just didn’t want him to go into the foster system again and be returned.”

“I wanted him to have stability and a place he knew was his home. That is why I adopted him outright from the owner. Beaux Tox had already bounced around and I just wanted him to be a dog.”

Jamie could empathize with Beaux as she had been in foster care herself as a child, and knew the feelings of false hope and rejection that come from being passed around from family to family.

Beaux was given intensive treatment by Dr. Jay Rydberg, a dedicated and heroic vet that invested as much time and emotion into getting Beaux back onto his feet as Jamie did. Together they turned the poor dog around, helping him through a chronic case of heartworms which nearly cost him his life. Finally, Beaux was given a clean bill of health, and Jamie was able to take him home with her.

Now he finds himself as part of a happy family, becoming a little brother to another Retreiver called Riley. They have bonded and become best friends. “Riley and Beaux absolutely love each other,” Jamie says about the pair. “They’re perfect for each other even with the age difference (Beaux is 6 and Riley 13) and even though Beaux acts like a puppy — it helps Riley stay young.”

So all’s well that ends well. Despite a life of hardship, Beaux Tox exudes the joy and innocence of a young pup and couldn’t be happier in his new family. “He’s so full of life,” Jamie said. “And he’s just brought so much to us.”

You know the cool thing about dogs? They aren't hung up on appearances. In fact, they give zero shits about appearance whatsoever. How they react to others is totally based on how those people act. If you're a turd to them, they won't like you, no matter how beautiful/handsome/rich/famous you are. And it doesn't matter if you're the ugliest, poorest human being on the planet, but you treat them with love and affection, that dog will love you right back with everything that they are. They'll stay with you when you're sick, or hurt, or feeling like a complete waste of a human being, and they won't ever judge you for anything but your own actions. Moral of the story: Don't be like people, people - be like a dog.

He's gorgeous.. When I was growing up we rescued a springer spaniel who was found on the side of a motorway. He had an overbite and the rescue centre believed that he was bred to become a stud and that he was abandoned because of the overbite. He was gorgeous and one of the most friendliest dogs I've ever met.

Jamie Hulit is a true heroine. I cannot speak highly enough of people like her, who can see through the superficial and understand what is truly important. If we had more people like her the world would be paradise. Kudos, and respect, and a big hug and best wishes for Beau.

When one sees a pretty lady with an okay looking guy, or visa versa, but you notice their closeness. You know these two people treasure one another for their minds and hearts. It's real love. When I got divorced a close friend said I had to euthanize my black Lab, Holly because I’d never meet a woman with a dog. I said, "Do you think I'd kill my friend to meet a woman?" I never spoke to him again. That was 1970.I took Holly to work with me & she would come to my office at day’s end. She sat in the doorway to the office as the lights dimmed for the evening and never barked. I was taken with a certain woman who passed my office for the lady’s room, but I was too shy to ask her out. One night Jan saw Holly and stopped to talk. After an hour I drove her home and in a year we were married. It lasted 45 years and she just died of ALS. We loved animals and each other. I am lost.

You ALMOST (not quite but almost) have to feel sorry for these people who don't treat dogs right and learn what they're really losing out on. Now I've always loved dogs but couldn't have one as a child. And I guess it was the right thing. Both my parents worked, no one was home from about 5:30 to 6:00 am until 4:30 in the afternoon for years. What sort of life would that have been for a dog and my parents would NOT allow dogs in the house. Now that I have one who does my parents have completely turned around. They learned what dogs can do in a life. Even for me, who always did love them, didn't fully understand HOW intelligent they are, how they experience EVERY emotion people do, how they grieve, have heartache, experience everything we do. Then....they give SO much and they are THE most forgiving creatures on the planet most of the time. Let's face it, eons more forgiving than humans. The love you can feel with a dog is astounding and these horrid people miss out on in life.

If only more less-than-fortunate pups had this sort of committment and love from us human critters! As Shakespeare so perfectly phrased it, "The quality of mercy is not strained...it droppeth as the gentle rain from Heaven upon the place beneath." I won't go so far as to use this as an affirmation of God's love, but it is definitely evidence that among all the dip-s*its, idiots, wastrels, slimeballs, low-lifers and general scum of humanity, there are some TRULY admirable people out there! In his own way, Beaux is absolutely beautiful! Thanks for giving us this uplifting story! Major_DJ_M...c6769d.jpg Major_DJ_Muttley_USAF-5adb710c6769d.jpg

*weeping* Ecstatic, as well as relieved, he found his happily ever after, but distraught he went through hell beforehand. I'm a proud mom to two rescue puppers, one who was also a bag of bones when rescued. Stories like these always make me cry...they're bittersweet, happy/sad/mad.

To those who abuse animals, trophy hunters, poachers, enablers, government officials and their families etc I pray will be punished 1000x1000x1000. Beaux really lives up to his name inside and out as does the beautiful angel who saw him for what he really is and gave him a forever home. I hope they all have a long and happy life together.
