Mom Accuses Southwest Airlines For Name-Shaming Her 5 Year Old, Internet Name-Shames Her Even More

The world can be an unkind place and one little girl got a taste of this when her name was a subject of public shaming by a gate agent at John Wayne International Airport. Five-year-old ‘Abcde,’ (pronounced “Ab-city,”) who suffers from epilepsy was catching a flight to El Paso, Texas along with her mother Traci Redford when the incident occurred.

According to the Social Security Administration database, 328 girls have been given this unique name in the United States. Abcde shares a spot along with such unusual girls’ names as Ianthe, Uri, and Abiona, just to name a few.

Abcde and her mom had gone to the gate for priority boarding when the gate agent began to mock the girl

Redford explained in an interview with ABC7 that “The customer service started laughing, pointing at me and my five-year-old daughter, talking to other employees. So I turned around and said, ‘Hey if I can hear you, my daughter can hear you too, so I’d appreciate if you’d just stop,” she recounted. Despite the confrontation, a photo of her daughter’s boarding pass with her name ended up on social media.

“She said ‘Mum, why is she laughing at my name?’

“I said not everyone is nice and not everyone is going to be nice and it’s unfortunate. While I was sitting there, she took a picture of my boarding pass and chose to post it on social media, mocking my daughter. It was actually brought to my attention by somebody who had seen it on Facebook and reported it to Southwest Airlines.”

An incensed Redford filed a formal complaint with the airline. The company responded two weeks later with disciplinary action against the mocker and a formal apology to the family: “We take great pride in extending our Southwest Hospitality to all of our Customers, which includes living by the Golden Rule and treating every individual with respect, in person or online.”

Well, Southwest Airlines might treat people with respect online, but the rest of the internet wasn’t as sympathetic to the situation

Many people started saying that it’s all the parent’s fault

If this article was supposed to generate sympathy for the mother, it failed. I truly feel sorry for that child, though. She has to go through life with that name because her mother is an attention starved dingbat.

Ok, so I agree that you definitely should NOT name a child ABCDE, and that the child is gonna get mocked at for the rest of her life (or until she changes her name). However, for the airline staff to take the photo and post it on social media is absolutely unprofessional as well.

ind of, but I must admit that I would have had a hard time keeping a straight face in a similar situation and I have an unusual name myself. But at least my parents put some actual thought into it instead of just writing down the start of the alphabet.

We have rules in my country and you definitely couldn't name your child Abcde. I used to think it wasn't a good law but looking at it now...I really can't blame them.

Her epilepsy is totally irrelevant to this story. Why throw it in there? That’s the point where journalism stops and personal opinion comes in. Trying to gain sympathy so people will agree with you. The only relevant point is this mom is an idiot.

They were trying to really generate sympathy. It didn't work. Kid probably just had a focal seizure or two and now the "mom" is screaming epilepsy

How can someone call his child ABCDE? These days, a man in France tried to call his son Griezmann-Mbappé after the french Soccer players.... fortunately, there are laws to protect the children!

There are courses for expecting parents on how to take care of children ... why did nobody think about including "How to (not) name your child" in them? Whenever I see "uniqueness" like this I'm absolutely stunned about how insensitive/selfish people can be when it comes to naming their child.

I feel for the poor kiddo. When I was naming my children, I literally said to myself, "Okay. Nothing they can get beat up for later..." Being unique is one thing. Painting a target on your child for bullies is just plain mean.

Please stop giving children ridiculous names. I have all the sympathy in the world for this kid because her parents are narcissistic enough to have saddled her with a "name" like this. The parents deserve to be shamed for this. They have given absolutely no thought to how this kid will have to function in the real world, how often she's going to have to explain this mess of a "name", spell it out for people, and be overlooked when people read her resume and think her name is a typo.

For God's sake give your child a sensible first name that no-one can make fun of or embarass them.. Give them a stupid middle name if you must, so they can make up their own mind how they wish to be known when old enough to make the choice,

I understand the temptation, you have this small, cute, little thing, thats all yours, to name as you please. You have to remember that that small cute thing will be a full fledged person some day who will have to fill out a job application, its a person, a really real person, not a puppy, show some restraint parents.

I never liked my “unique” name. It seemed to contribute to my problems with bullying and such. This lady has certainly made her child’s life more difficult with that name. The airline person should not have behaved this way, though. There’s no way to publicly mock the name without the child feeling it directed at her.

Was the gate agent wrong to make fun of the kid's name? Yes. Does the mom bear some responsibility for this incident? Also yes. She gave her kid a ridiculous name. What did she expect? I bet when this kid gets old enough, she changes her name. If nothing else the spelling of it if not the pronunciation of it. I thought people who named their kids ESPN were stupid but this mom stole the crown.

Meowton Mewsk You can't compare rape to a child's name. Also, a rape victim is not to blame for the incident. Not even partially. You cannot take someones dignity because of where they are, at what time they are there or because of what they were wearing. Those factors don't justify anything.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Germany have laws when it comes to naming your child? More countries should start creating laws that prevent parents from giving their children such silly names. It seems like it's a competition, especially among the celebrities, to see who can give their child the weirdest name. Apple, Rainbow, North... jeez. I'm all for abstract names but that's just too much

Americans are famous for picking stupid names. "Pilot Inspektor" is what actor Jason Lee named his kid. "Kal-El" for Nick Cage's boy {superman's birth name} , "Apple" child of Gweneth Paltro, "Jermajesty" offspring of Jermaine Jackson, and North West child of He & Her Who Must Not Be Named.

I have an unusual first name- Glinda. Believe me it is not cool, unique or fun and I DREADED the annual showing of the Wizard of Oz while in grade school. To this day I get called, Linda or Brenda and end up spelling it followed by "Like the witch in the Wizard of Oz- the Good one not the Green one." Wicked has been a challenge too...sigh. Strangers act as if they've just come up with the most clever commentary on my name and I've heard it all before.

I have a deep suspicion there is going to be a name change as soon as someone turns 18, I bet the judge approves it in record time too. I know a lot of people love unique names, but jeez think about what your child is going to go through before picking a name. Sometimes things get easier once a person becomes an adult but I have a feeling the torments may never end for this name

I hate when parents give their children an unique name that is not pronounced the way that it is spelled. If you want want to give your child an unique name, that's great - but then make if phonetically correct. Even the Zachareigh name. That is a fine name, except it is pronounced Zack-a-ray, as in ray of sunshine. If she wanted Zack-a-ree, then it should be spelled Zachary or Zacharee if she wanted a "unique" twist. I'm all about unique names, just do the kid a favor and have it spelled correctly or at least so people can pronounce it correctly.

I mean, seriously, when thinking of a name for your child, you have to consider how it's going to affect them throughout their life. Maybe this mom thought her daughter would find Abcde to be unique and fun. But if there is ANY question, just don't go there. Don't. There are plenty of names that aren't super common that are still pretty and won't cause psychological trauma to the child. (I remember reading a few years ago about a family in New Zealand who wanted to name their daughter Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii ... the New Zealand courts made them change it. Seriously people, these are your children's LIVES we're talking about.)

Parents really need to think about how their child will feel having a chosen name for the rest of their life. In this case, I'm thinking the girl is going to change the spelling as soon as she is old enough to write, and will probably legally change it asap. Even if you give your kid a normal-ish name, but with "unique" spelling, have you thought about the fact that your kid is going to spend THE REST OF THEIR LIFE correcting and then spelling their name for other people. No thanks.

To call such a beautiful little girl such an Appalling and frankly stupid name is the sheer fault of the truly idiotic mother. There are wonderful unusual inspiring names out there, and this is Not one of them. No one will ever know how to pronounce it and that poor child already has a disability that will single her out, without her mothers abject stupidity in this. She will be subjected to bullying and psychological abuse all of her life. I know how difficult it is to have disabilities at school and the bullying that goes with it. I have an unusual name myself but at least it is lovely. I am amazed that the name was allowed when the birth was registered. The initial reason for this story was bad, no airline should ever do that but dear Gods what Was the mother thinking when she saddled her poor child with That name 😟

Okay I 100% agree that the parent is at fault for this, but it wasn't okay for the person working at the airline to mock the name when the child could hear her. How immature do you have to be to mock a 5 year old girl for her name, which she isn't even in control of?

All I know is, we (parents) suppose to give the best name for our children, that will not embarrass them in the future, since name applies for life. Because a child can not chose their birth name, it's the parents' responsibility to do so. Sure someone can change it later, but it will take quite complicated administration and states' regulations, and on and on. So, to make it easier, parents should name their children with the best name possible. I understand some people want unique names, like this Abcde---which I personally think, risky, but is cute. But the parents should know the risk of naming their kids like that, since you can't control other people's opinions. Don't feel offended. Just simply tell people who laugh, "It pronounces Ab-city. It's unique, isn't it? Thank you."--you know, stay nice and smile. Is that too hard to do? Because storming the internet for "justice and equality" won't help, really.

Mom's attempt to name me something unusual (to keep all the other kids in the neighborhood from answering when she called me), has brought me a lifetime of ridicule & mockery. And most people don't even try to pronounce it correctly (just sound it out, people, ffs) Being made fun of was NOT fun. Have only met/heard of 2 other females with the same name/spelling. It's full of such "clever" parents all over the world. It is not even about making fun of the name, it is just plain pain to use it in daylife. Imagine every time you need to say your name you have to spell it, then repeat it several times because the other guy just can't believe it you are serious. If you keep insisting "my name IS abcde" they might even get aggressive, you have to show an ID to make them believe (furthermore a child will not even have proper ID).

Well at least in the Netherlands parents aren't allowed to give their children ridiculous names. A name like Abcde would be rejected with a firm advise to the parents to get real or to get out.

The name doesn't sound so bad, but the spelling is atrocious. Abcidy would have been a better option. At least then people could try to sound it out. It must be exhausting always having to explain how the name is pronounced.

You get used to correcting people or just not even bothering. No one can pronounce my last name correctly. No one can spell my first name correctly because even though it's a common name, there's a few different ways to spell it and apparently my way is "unique" (but it's really not). At one point I just became like "sure yeah close enough"

If she's like other people I know whose parents gave them stupid names, she'll change it as soon as she can legally do so. I've met people who were named "Sunshine" (changed it to "Sunny"), Karma (made her middle name her first name), and others that were just stupid. One kid whose name was Jose - like every other male in his family, including his brothers, uncles, fathers, and two grandfathers - changed his name because he was right....that particular family "tradition" was idiotic.

Wow. Downvoted for telling people that the kids HATE those names and change them as soon as possible. Who knew. ...///... Not long ago, a woman gave birth in Chicago and heard the word "meconium" used. She decided to name her daughter that, because she thought it "sounded classy". The nurse had to tell her OVERandoverandoverandover until it sunk in that "meconium" refers to the s**t that infants release when they're born. ...///... This woman wanted to name her child "s**t". ...///... Please, O Snotbaggy Ones, tell me that she should have gone ahead with that.

So what if this child has an unusual name? Why is that an excuse to go bat s**t crazy and pack bully a child or anyone for that matter? What is wrong with humanity when a name is regarded as an opportunity to round on these people like hyenas? Take a damn good look at yourselves.

It's bad enough that she has epilepsy and have to deal with that all her life, but to then saddle her with such a ridiculous name is irresponsible of the parent. Middle school will be horrible for her. Did they not like Abby, Addie, Allie, or at least spell it like it sounds Abcidy or Absidy? Still a stupid name.

If you're going to name your child that, AT LEAST spell it Abcidey or Absitie or something. I mean, it that mom likes unconventional names, she can spell it in some way that won't earn her daughter a lifetime of bulling. Or just name her Jane.

Not enough parents run through name scenarios when coming up with names any more for their children. A Scandinavian country, Sweden I think it is, has the right idea with an approved list of names that can be given. It's lengthy too.

I live here, and I have seen some of the people that you are talking about; the area of "Murcia" I live in, is one of the ones the entire country makes fun of on occasion, and it does not help, that " Murcia", is exactly how a lot of people pronounce "America", because of the accent here. But it's not just in this area. They are everywhere. And some of them, are complete idiots. Seriously. But not all of us. I promise you. Yes, there are stupid people all over the world, in EVERY country, and I know you know that.( I mean that sincerely, just want to make sure you knew I was not trying to be sarcastic or mean spirited towards you : ) ) ...........continued.............( almost done, lol...)

Parents around the world: don´t give your kids funny names trying to be "original" or "creative". In spanish (my native language) we don´t name a girl Penelope, bc bullies could call her Pene (p--nis in english)... So, I don´t think it is hard to find a good name, right? We have rules about it, come on! I´m not saying it ís acceptable to make fun of this girl´s name bc it´s not, she deserves respect.

There are plenty of names in many languages that used to be appropriate but nowadays those names would be just be too easy targets for endless bullying so most parents don't use them. For example here in Finland no one wants to name their kid Yrjö because nowadays that means 'Vomit', Jorma is now a slang for 'penis', Kustaa because it is nearly same word as the rude word for 'Peeing', etc...

I don't have kids but you don't need to have them to know that what these employees (ADULTS) did to this Child is not okay. I don't care what her name is, she is a Child and has no control over her name. She is going to get bullied in school by other children for it and adults should not be the ones to do so, we need to show kids compassion. I don't fly, but if I did this kind of action would make me rethink going on plane with Southwest Airline. I don't do adults bulling kids.

In the end , every adult in this story used poor judgement and hurt a defenseless, five year old girl. A half wit mother who continues the humiliation by publicising the fiasco; the nit wit airline employee who published the little girl’s boarding pass, without permission and failing to cross out her last name; and an irresponsible press for running with a non-issue. The Mother is getting the bashing she deserves, the airline employee will be disciplined and hopefully fired for invasion of privacy and unfortunately a minor child will probably be scarred for life. Children are supposedly resilient, but young adults seared with emotional scars are often marked for life. It’s spelled out for them, like the alphabet.

Valerie Lessard

the airline employee won't be disciplined. right now, she's got hero status for laughing at a child and publishing her boarding pass. mother was right to disagree with that, and if it were me I wouldn't be waiting for internet accolades, I'd take care of that employee right there and then. Secondly, we assume it's entirely the mother's fault, she must have a father, right? And to me, this story isn't about the little girl's name, it's about a s****y employee who can't keep her thoughts to herself. Why couldn't she have just done her f*****g job?

But, every, single, time, those few( and I mean " few" , as relative to the population) do something so completely idiotic, say something idiotic, etc. etc. ......every time, they are always the ones that make the headlines, go viral...the whole world gets to see their stupidity on display, or god help us, they somehow seem to find each other...then we are talking about groups-no, PACKS and HERDS of stupidity that ban together, proudly waving their crazy flag, while the rest of us that do have enough common sense to know if we are going to act a fool, to do it at home and not in public....slowly sink into our couches as we watch the news/ you tube/etc. , when we realize that this dumb a*s is one of " ours". It's embarrassing! The things these people think of, things they do; shocks us, too! There really are some crazy people here, in America. What do I think? I think if this had been a little boy with an odd name, the response would not have been that it’s inevitable that the poor child is in for misery. This is because male pain, especially young male pain, is seen as something to be avoided and mitigated. Female pain - including young female pain - is just an unfortunate thing that “society” is doing, so sad. It’s to be pitied, kind of, but it can’t be mitigated or fought against. I think it’s shameful. If it had been a little boy, the vitriol and hate and probably doxxing the mom would have been subject to would have been a while different thing.

they feel fine with attacking mother and ignoring the act of shittiness by the employee because she's white. I'm willing to bet they'd suddenly feel the opposite if an hilarious chinese or vietnamese child's name were laughed at in the same way. it's not a race thing i'm trying to get at, its the hypocrisy and how easily they're swayed by the article and what other internet users think

There are many people with unusual names in this country and people are free to name their children whatever they want. They should not be constrained for any reason, especially social pressure. I am behind the mother for her courage to give her daughter the name she wanted and not conform to peer pressure. People must adapt to such trivial things as names, for crying out loud!

I understand the objections and issues people have raised here and feel good about most of them but the bottom line is a large corporation had an employee who publicly bullied a child and that corporation dragged their feet in making an apology. That's what the situation is about.

I think that name is unique and creative and amazing and although I do feel bad for Abcde I am proud of her mother for standing up for her child. I love that name and I think down the road Abcde will learn to love it to because she is 5 so she could understand by now if she's in school that children can be mean and hurtful. It sounds like she has an amazing support at home and she will be loved and cared for. You also never know, the mother has her own very good reasons to name her child that. It is sad that people result to online hate for their opinions. If I ever say anything online it is always positive and that goes for my in person life too. Help the internet become a good thing, not a bad thing.

A name is public information. No data protection laws were broken. The rest of the information on the boarding pass only means something to the airline.

I think it has a way of showing her that her parents were being creative. There is so many names spelled different than they should be. I'm all for unusual names. I ran into a lady the other day whose name was Glorious and her infant son's name was Justice. But when you're lazy and just write ABCDE on the birth certificate, you've pretty much opened up your kid to ridicule and teasing their whole life. I can't imagine the problems this little girl will face as an adult trying to obtain credit and dealing with government agencies like the IRS.

I come from an era of naming where as a generation we were lucky to have names that could be pronounced on the first go (my, and many of my friends, parents were hippies). I survived with a name not normally applied to a white girl. I know Raistlin Wolfbrother, Dazante Knight, Penny Nicole Quarter, Justin Case, Candy Kane, and Fruit Cart. Having a unique name is all well and good, as long as you pair it with a normal middle name and self defense lessons. Both of my children of slightly odd first names and completely normal middle names.

Has no one heard this name before? This was a thing when I was a little kid. As soon as I saw the kid's name was Abcde, I knew exactly how to read it because I've heard/seen it before. And I don't think the kid is going to get mocked for the rest of her life because of that name. She'll probably get "randomly" checked by the TSA when she's a little older for an "obviously fake" name, but she'll be fine otherwise.

Sorry Abcde, the world is filled with a bunch of jackasses, and the internet allows them to get their points across. I wonder sometimes when the world encouraged us to conform to standards in order to fit in, but it seems like that concept has been lost and hasn't yet been accepted. Sadly, this is not the first time I've heard/seen this name. I myself laughed at the name for it's awkward pronunciation and ridiculousness of it all. Reading this article has truly made me upset. I'm sure it was not the mother's intention to name her child after something she liked, only to see she would be bullied later on. The only people to blame here is the airline staff and the people of the internet. Earlier in the post people clearly stated this mother's child would be bullied later on because of her name, and the people of Twitter did a damn good job on making that happen as soon as possible. Whatever the case may be, respect is important, and always should be. This mother and child did not deserve this sort of hatefulness.

so does the airline employee just burst out laughing and share photos of every unusual name she sees? I've seen a ton of unusual names in my life, both either cultural or thought up by "imaginative" parents. The problem isn't the name, problem is this employee who can't a) keep her thoughts to herself, b) stop sharing her thoughts with others, c) breached privacy of a passenger, d) laughed at a child about her name. They should absolutely be fired and replaced with someone more professional. Sure, the child will suffer later in life, and this case because her mother didn't really think that far ahead, but what about immigrant children who have cultural names that don't sit right in their current country, whose parents didn't perhaps have the understanding to give a more "acceptable" name? would it be right for some employee somewhere to have seen humour in some other name and have the internet hating on the owner's parents?

Wanting someone to change their name because of social acceptance? I missed when we all had to conform to society. MrX - Most people agree that it is stupid to bully people because they have a weird name. But bullying still happens and many people hate their name because too many people make jokes about it. So it is definitely good idea to give to your child a neutral name than a name that is too easy target for the bullies. If you disagree - that is fine. Go to name your child Adolf and come back to tell how many minutes your child managed to live before anyone made a Hitler joke...

But the kid can change it when she gets older or pick a nickname if she chooses- Abbie would fit easily. I have a weird name with a common nickname. It effected my life 0%. This is just rude and disrespectful, that someone has to be made fun of for the name that is part of them. The parents had a purpose behind abcde. It many have a personal sentimental purpose. It may have been a relative's name or ancestors name. But people should respect people's names. Her child is an individual, not a belonging. Naming is a responsibility that should be taken seriously. A name will matter most to the person who has to bear it, at least until old enough to decide whether to keep it or not. A parent should think of that first and not their own selfish desire to be different. Parents need to stop thinking of children as theirs to do what they like with. Children are unique people who will be affected by what they are called, unlike a pet who won't care if they are called something stupid or funny.

The parents deserve to be shamed for this. Meowton Mewsk You can't compare rape to a child's name. Also, a rape victim is not to blame for the incident. Not even partially. You cannot take someones dignity because of where they are, at what time they are there or because of what they were wearing. Those factors don't justify anything.

Mock-offense, expecting backup and support. If you're 'strong enough' to give that name to your kid, then you should be strong enough to deal with the aftermath. Damn millennials having kids - you knew it was going to happen.

Because storming the internet for "justice and equality" won't help, really.

the airline workers were COMPLETELY wrong in this situation they absolutely should not have laughed at this childs name. but come on the kids name is so unique and not in a good way. the parents obviously wanted this name to bring attention to the girl. idk who in their right mind thought that name was a good idea. nobody embarrassed this little girl but the parents. it's like naming a kid s**t face and being upset people find it funny it makes no sense.

PLEASE stop giving your child strange names! My legal first name is one I've always hated, so i go by my middle name.

And of course we have the plethora of celebrity children: Blue Ivy Carter, Dweezil, Moon Unit, and Diva Thin Muffin Zappa; Apple Paltrow Martin; Moxie Crimefighter Jillette; Pilot Inspektor Lee; Tu Morrow; Jermajesty Jackson; Audio Science Sossamon; Fifi Trixibelle, Pixie and Peaches Geldof; Sage Moonblood Stallone...

OMGosh. This is a thing!?! Look, I get being unique and all that, but do that to your own name. Your kid still has to live in this world. I truly thought this was like the "l-a" (Ledasha) thing and I think that was proven to be a hoax.

It’s spelled out for them, like the alphabet.

the airline employee won't be disciplined. right now, she's got hero status for laughing at a child and publishing her boarding pass. mother was right to disagree with that, and if it were me I wouldn't be waiting for internet accolades, I'd take care of that employee right there and then.

But there's a lot of really good, sincere, open-minded people here, too. You just don't get to hear about us as much.

There is nothing wrong with this child's name, and I sincerely and from the bottom of my heart hope the employee who posted that lost their job.....and you should all be ashamed of yourselves. How about this....instead of berating and browbeating the parent and not allowing her the freedom to express her creativity and uniqueness, how about you teach YOUR children to be more open and accepting of differences and teach them to show respect and care? YOU are the parents of bullies if you're teaching your kids they basically have to conform or die. The hell with all of you. You make me ill.

There are many people with unusual names in this country and people are free to name their children whatever they want. They should not be constrained for any reason, especially social pressure.

Oh well, gay marriages are now legal, maybe in a few years people will get their heads out of their asses and understand the world is beyond Jacks, Jills, Tom, Maries, Robs, Pamelas, Rogers etc. You guys are d***s, plain and simple. This woman and her child were ridiculed, and while you all may claim to support her against the airline, you guys are no different as you are now tormenting the mom and the kid right now, particularly over the internet. This mother and child did not deserve this sort of hatefulness.

the fact that people here and around the internet are justifying the employee's s****y behaviour just proves what a bunch of hypocritical c***s they are.

Yep. Worthless a******s. Valerie is a gorgeous name by the way. Beautiful, and perfectly between common and different.

so does the airline employee just burst out laughing and share photos of every unusual name she sees?

Sharing a boarding pass on social media....oughta get that person arrested, I don't see how it's any different than the HIPAA laws I have to--and should-- follow.

Why? Doesn't share any information that is private. Names are public information.

There are a lot of idiots in the world, and thanks to the internet, the jackasses can shine. You guys are idiots. Is ABCDE an unusual name, yeah, but is this how we treat people in life? You guys are mocking the girl, talking about her issues she will have when applying for a job, etc, whatever the hell you guys are on about, it just shows how judgemental you guys are and pretty much you are all condoning people judging others. Wanting someone to change their name because of social acceptance? I missed when we all had to conform to society. Most of you idiots said it's not the girl's name, it's about poking fun at the parent, that is just to remove the guilt from all of you for targeting the little girl, but really you guys should be removing your head from your asses. Hang in there Abcde, the world is filled with a bunch of idiots. I have an unusual name myself, and you know what, you will laugh at those morons for being idiots. They will only ever be gate agents in their lives.

Totally agree, It was inappropriate to take pix and post their names online. And you guys need to leave this poor pretentious woman alone... And please, PLEASE make sure you pronounce her name correctly.. It’s Ta-Ra-say, as in Sriracha hot sauce and Beyoncé. Not, NOT “track 👁 “ nor “T-Rexi”, as in baby 🦖. And DEFINITELY Not pronounced “I need more filters” Last name is easy, Red Ford, as in red Ford truck.

I am 100% against naming laws. I think that is some fascist b.s. Call it my rugged individualistic Americanism peeking through. Is this a hilariously terrible name? Oh god yes. But the kid can change it when she gets older or pick a nickname if she chooses- Abbie would fit easily. I have a weird name with a common nickname. It effected my life 0%. And variety is the spice of life. That being said, the airline workers were definitely a******s, but Mom not having a sense of humor/bad taste makes her the biggest a*****e. But bless her and her husband/partner for existing anyway, cause this is the GOAT.

I agree. Abcde is a dumb name with an even dumber spelling but unique-ish names are still better than those corny “Christian names” like Mary, Mark and John.

okay, so we're supposed to shame a mother and child because the kid's name doesn't conform to standards? Nah. I think this just shows how people need to practice compassion and tolerance.

This is just rude and disrespectful, that someone has to be made fun of for the name that is part of them. The parents had a purpose behind abcde. It many have a personal sentimental purpose. It may have been a relative's name or ancestors name. But people should respect people's names. Making fun of anything about anyone will not change the world in which we live, it will only make it worse. My full heart is for abcde. ❤❤❤

Is it just me, or is it always white women in America that seem to come up with the most fvcking ridiculous names, speaking as a white woman myself?

I feel so bad for Abcde and her mom. It is not the mother's fault. She can name her daughter whatever she wants and no one should ever blame her for that. It is her child. Stop being so mean, all of you guys.
