What traits would you hope the person your child is dating would have? respectful, kind, and caring, maybe? Well to some people race is also on that list, but not for Mississipi mother Heather Boyer. Recently, her daughter began dating someone new, who happened to also be black and she undoubtedly approved because of the way he treated her. He had all the characteristics that she felt her daughter deserved in a boyfriend, but when her daughter changed her profile picture to an image of the young couple, her mom received a racist text that revealed the sad truth that not everyone shared her views on what mattered in a relationship.

Boyer received a text about the profile picture from someone who thought she may have an issue with the skin color of her daughter’s new boyfriend. The mom was taken aback, but instead of responding to the text in a negative way she chose to use the experience to create a larger response to this kind of mentality and wrote a heartfelt Facebook post about the experience.

“Today my daughter changed her profile picture. After maybe 5 minutes I get a text ..” I didn’t know she was dating a black boy, did you?” It took me all day to think up a response, which I didn’t send personally but thought I would share for anyone else that “may not know” Yes in fact I did know, but the color of his skin doesn’t define who he is. What does define who is he is how he treats my daughter. I see my daughter dating a boy that comes to my house and shows me nothing but respect (a big deal in my book). It’s always Yes Ma’am, No Ma’am, we talk about football and baseball, he tells me bye when he leaves, and has not once shown me a lack of manners or respect.
I see my daughter dating a boy who treats her good. He takes her on dates, to ballgames, out to eat..not to a club or partying on the weekends.
I see my daughter dating a boy who takes her to church with him. Every Sunday. He plays in the band, she sits with his family. How many young men these days make church a priority? None of the others have.
He doesn’t hit her, cuss her, lie to her, or make her cry. Would I rather her date a white boy that did, to keep from her dating another race? Absolutely not. So that’s my response to the question I was asked. And I know people have their own opinion, but at the end of the day, the fact that my daughter has someone that loves her and treats her like a queen makes me happy. That’s something I’ve never had in my life and I’m glad she does.”

People loved the post and responded with photos of their own interracial relationships

According to census.gov, the percentage of U.S married-couple households that are interracial or interethnic grew from 7.4 percent in 2000 up to 10.2 percent and in 2016 it grew 2.8 more percentage points. While there was an overall increase across the nation, in Missippi where Boyer lives, most counties did not see a significant change.

And were shocked that in this day and age people were still so narrow-minded

Boyer was touched by all the loving posts and said the responses to her post had been overwhelmingly positive

I told my daughter when she started dating that I didn't care if she dated a guy or a girl, just as long as they treated her with respect. I don't see why race/colour/gender should still be such an issue.. I guess some people just have to be whingers about something just to get their fix of attention..

Together for 16 years, married for almost 11. My grandmother thought it was nice that we were getting married but "we shouldn't have kids together." We have an awesome 8 year old son! 53297001_1...28a72a.jpg 53297001_10217277200375446_9066567964903342080_n-5c7964328a72a.jpg

I am reading all of these stories and looking at the pictures, as I get chills, all I can say is Amen sister. I want happiness for my children, I do not care what race, color, or gender they are. Please just treat my child with respect and love them. That is all a mom can ask for with her kids.

When I started dating my husband who is German, my mother side of the family was upset. They kept calling my mom and asking why she was letting me date a white guy. My mom response was "Lokk, this man treats my daughter like a queen. I never seen how much a man love his other half as much as he loves her." She even told them that if they keep their attitude up like they were doing, she was going to cut them out of her life completely. Some has changed but we do have family members we haven't talked to since I started dating my husband and that was over 12 years ago.

Yakisha, I'm in love with your name! And I admire your mom! I'm dating a German, too(born in Namibia and grew up in South Africa), aren't they just the tits? <3 all the best <3 I hope your family open their hearts and that you'll be able to rekindle with them. If not, you seem happy as is, thank God, so.. <3

Many of them are threatened or feel a sense of ownership over the opposite sex in their race. This has been my experience with these people.

It's cute, and he is a good guy, big up for that ! But that stance about "how many people put church blablabla" made me sligthly uncomfortable, I have no problem with people's faith, but it sounded like without the religion you can't have values and principles...

No, what it sounded like is this woman & her family are religious so this is important to her and them. Just like it is NOT important to you everyone is free to value what they value. Respect that.

Judgemental attitudes everywhere. Unfortunately in the reply as well, though. Why would going to church on Sunday be a better choice than going to a club at the weekend? And why would not both be OK? Just respect the decisions being made....

I have a sister that told me "you are welcome in our home, but your husband is not." while he understood that people were going to feel that way, he told me he it was "ok" -- it was not! I have not had a relationship with her for almost 20 yrs now...SHE NEVER EVEN MET HIM or saw him for herself, just 'heard' that i was with a 'black' man!

I’m not even white and people have asked me this b******t. “Is your dad okay with you marrying a black man?!” Uhh, my dad is the main one bothering me to hurry up and marry him so he can be part of the family. F**k off. I love flaunting my relationship in the faces of people who hate it. It’s surprisingly empowering to be able to hurt bad people just by being in love, lol. Whatever I can do to make a racist person’s day worse! Also it’s not an indictment on white people for me. We get the hate from everrryyyone. This isn’t exclusive to whites.

I think the "That's the way I was raised argument is major b.s." I had a parent that used that as an excuse for their racism and unfortunately passed it on to a sibling, my view is completely different than theirs and I was raised in the same environment...it caused me many heated arguments with family as well. My point being it doesn't matter how you were raised unless you are too dumb to realize that a person is a person, they are not their skin, they are not their body a body is a carriage that we use while we are alive and we will all leave ours behind someday.

Not necessarily, I have a cousin that's several years younger than me, who says c**p to see if they can make my head explode with her BS, but her kids supposedly learned all the lovely words at school that make the steam start. Really sometimes I think there's only me and one other cousin that don't find race to be an issue.

When I was a little girl back the 60's, I was surrounded by all different races, to me they were just people. My family moved to a country town when I was 7 years old, and I then discovered racism. My name is actually an old Irish common name but it was seen as being 'a wog'; translates to Aussie for Italian. I was horrified, confused and never understood such thinking. Aboriginals here were called 'Boongs' and never to be seen due to their 'stupidness, and monkey like race'. I never understood that back then and I still don't. People all bleed the same colour, we all go to the toilet the same way, why is there so much hatred? Show me respect and I will give you mine in return, show me your biases and I will try to understand but in the end will sadly leave you to your own mistaken beliefs. Love is love. If we were all blind, how would we then know the colour of the skin, would we reject the loving person if we could suddenly have vision?

Hurray to this mama. In this day and age, I would have hoped this was over. Unfortunately, it is not. after nearly a decade of our very own president and his wife setting us back 60 years in race relations. This attitude sickens me. Some time ago, one of my sons got me alone to announce that he thought he was bisexual. Um, OK. I think he was shocked at my response. If he was, he was. Not an issue to me. Now this garbage? Please! God Bless You Heather Boyer!

It is so sad that ppl still care about the color of the skin. My 15yo niece is dating a boy and he´s ver respectful and cares a lot about her and as long as I see my niece happy, nothing else matters... When my daughter starts dating, the only thing I´ll ask her is to make sure that person really loves, cares, respects and supports her as much as she will do.

I agree that in this day and age this should not even be a topic of discussion but it still sadly is. Being bi-racial myself my mother told me of the stares and taunts her and my father would receive. If I was this mother I would question that people who sent her those messages and wonder if those are the type of people she should associate with being their views are obviously different.

A quarter black...1/2 white...3/8 this or that or the other...why is it necessary to have a degree in math to talk about love and marriage? Love is love. People are people. Numbers are not very romantic and are, in fact, totally irrelevant in the scheme of things. If a man and a woman love each other why should the color of the pigment in their skin matter? People outside the marriage looking in should just butt out, mind their own business and keep their pie holes closed. It's hard enough to make a marriage work these days without all these featherless vultures sitting on their tree limbs waiting for a chance to swoop down and start pecking.

It's very strange for me, a Brazilian, that the possibility of a black and white being together can cause a stir, and stories like this make a famous case and people argue about it. Although racism is a big problem in Brazil, it's no big deal that people of different colors or backgrounds form a couple. You will not see people raising this question, and yes, one does well to the other.

I'm really glad they got so much support from everyone! To be honest, I remember how taken aback I was to learn that it is normal to self-classify into 'races' in the US. And that you are permanently reminded to that as you need to check little boxes with "Hispanic", "White" etc everywhere. That is not normal and not how it is handled throughout the rest of the world. Why does it even matter? The word alone makes me shudder. "Race". As if you're a different form of being, like dogs and cats or mice and chicken. We don't use that term (well we did, but thankfully we're over that now. I'm German). I think not calling different backgrounds a "race" and not permanently pointing those groups out makes it a lot easier to take the different heritages of us all as what it is - a different ethnicity, significant to us and our history, but at the same time one of many aspects that belong to us, but which do not define ourselves. Our personalities and deeds do that, not our skin color.

I have had people ask me if it bothers me that my son is so close to a black girl (it's obvious to anyone who sees them them adore each other) and that they might date in the future... I thank god, this isn't the norm for people to think this way. Yea a few bad apples here and there, mostly it's a much better world now than before. As we make progress, bigotry, racism and ignorance will evolve out, slowly but surely. As a child I remember stories from my father, not many actually but to see the world I live in versus the past, it's a good future for kids.

It is shocking people still have issues with who other people choose to date. An adult relationship with another adult, whether their gay, straight, interracial or same race is NO ONE ELSES BUSINESS! If they’re not hurting anyone, who cares who someone chooses to love? People need to turn their rage toward real issues like pedophilia, rape, child abuse, domestic abuse, famine, keeping abortion legal, Substance and Mental Health issues... the list is endless but shouldn’t include whose dating who. This subject is very (pardon the pun) Black and White: love is love and you’re damn lucky to get it in your life. To the judgemental a******s who feel they need to comment: I feel sorry for you in that lonely existence you’ve created.

Should this young couple choose to combine their lives and have children, the odds are strongly in their favor that their child will be healthier than kids who are NOT mixed race. It's referred to as "hybrid vigor" and occurs throughout nature: plants, animals and humans. Biologist Aarathi Prasad presented a documentary based on research called IS IT BETTER TO BE MIXED RACE? It is fascinating and informative -- about 45 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZZAckwJHsQ

Colour is never an issue, rather woman opressing religions are. She seems fine with that boy, beautyful couple. I am gipsy, and we come in ALL the colours and shapes, so I guess we are used to it anyway. I look like the whitest pale scandinav and my wife look african, but we are just from different gipsy tribes in the same country, my daughter is prettier than than the models of today looking like a mulattina. I wouldnt mind her finding whatever kind of boy, as long as he passes the one rule I have. Treat her like your eyeball.

That is just as racist- saying that. Believing both races should stick to their own. You dont mention a black woman and a white man- what is THEIR motivation in your opinion- which is disrespectful to just about everyone.

Is it wrong that with only a quick glance at the article I find the most disturbing thing is the author's inability to spell Mississippi correctly? Two different spellings are used in the span of about two paragraphs and they are both wrong. Sigh, it's as if it's no longer acceptable to spell correctly anymore. Thank you for letting me vent.

Yes, it is wrong that a misspelling is what you find "most disturbing" about an article on racism.

Okay, buy am I not allowed to say to someone: "I didn't know his girlfriend was Asian?" it is a TEXT, how do you know it was said in a racist tone? Or are you not allowed to say "black" anymore? Here where I live (Central America) I am known as the white girl. If someone says to my husband: "I didn't know your wife was white" I am NOT offended!

I told my daughter when she started dating that I didn't care if she dated a guy or a girl, just as long as they treated her with respect. I don't see why race/colour/gender should still be such an issue.. I guess some people just have to be whingers about something just to get their fix of attention..

Please! My 15yo niece is dating a boy and he´s ver respectful and cares a lot about her and as long as I see my niece happy, nothing else matters... When my daughter starts dating, the only thing I´ll ask her is to make sure that person really loves, cares, respects and supports her as much as she will do.

I am gipsy, and we come in ALL the colours and shapes, so I guess we are used to it anyway. Spacebar is the long one at the bottom of the keyboard and the period is next to the comma.

Eh, this sounds like someone taking to facebook to humble brag about being a decent human being... just me?

I think it's more about raising awareness that prejudices like this still exist.

Yes, it is wrong that a misspelling is what you find "most disturbing" about an article on racism.

lol, not all black guys are bad but... if your daughter dates one there are higher chances of her ending up a single mother or a victim of domestic violence than if she dates a white guy.

The problem is if you imply there is something wrong with him being the race that he is.

When someone starts a sentence with "I'm not being rude but.." you most certainly are. Go back under your rock sweetheart..maybe after some serious thinking you'll get it..
