You can’t rush getting to know a person. It usually takes time to understand the nuances of somebody’s personality.

However, Reddit user KintV realized that the man he had his eye on wasn’t worth the effort in less than a single evening.

KintV had been chatting with him online, and everything seemed well until he invited the guy over for dinner. Upon his arrival, the guest immediately took issue with the Redditor’s dog, revealing they might not be that compatible after all.

This man loves his dog and cannot imagine his life without her, but his date took issue with the pet

And adopted the “it’s either the pet or me” attitude

At least the two of them realized that they’re incompatible

Dating and relationship coach Amy Schoen says that one of the biggest things she focuses on with her clients is authenticity. According to her, we need to be aware of our values and passions so that we can express ourselves and connect with other people without apology.

“If you have a pet, you already have a big love in your life,” Schoen wrote, echoing the Redditor’s feelings. “Someone who wants to date you will either ‘completely get it,’ or not.”

“Those who don’t want to ‘share’ a partner with an animal will often tell on themselves in their communication. They will disregard that part of your life or become sarcastic about your relationship with your pet.”

But if the two of you make it to a first date, you’ll have the opportunity to talk about what’s most important to you, and you’ll also get to share a typical day in your life. And if you pay attention, this should give you valuable insights into whether this person aligns with you or not.

Of course, your partner cannot and will not have all the same interests as you. This does not necessarily mean they are the wrong person for you, much less that they have a breakup-worthy red flag.

Schoen believes it all boils down to the person’s response to your enthusiasm: does he smile and show interest when you pull out your phone and show pictures of your pup? Or does he casually glance at your phone and say, “Uh-huh” and then go on with a non-related topic? Does he listen attentively to your story about the troubling time you had to take your pet to the vet? Or does he ask why you would ever spend so much money on an animal? Does he suggest a park all of you can visit together on a second date? Or does he ask you to take the dog outside?

For KintV and his date, the man’s dog was, indeed, a dealbreaker. But as unpleasant as the evening must’ve been, at least they realized this sooner rather than later.

Almost everyone who read his story said that the man was completely justified in kicking out his date

A few, however, said that he could’ve been nicer

NTA I'd shut my cat in another room for a friend, or a tradesperson. It's fine for an occasional or one off visitor to not like your pet. If you're dating someone, or looking for a flatemate, then nope. If someone's going to be there all the time, they can't not accept your pet. I think a lot of people fail to recognize the real issue behind people behaving in this manner. When someone comes into your home and immediately begins criticize any aspect of your home, you probably should stop right there and ask them to leave. If someone cannot honor what you find important, then that person is not for you. Anyone who comes to my house better know we have dogs, cats and other critters and that they are members of the family. Sure, I expect my animals to be respectful and well mannered, but if you come here and think I will put my animals away...yeah, not happening.

I still can't figure out why some folks just can't get how important animals can be to people. In my early teens I had a springer spaniel. He was there for every everything. He never judged me or made me feel less than the best. He also never cheated or stole from me. I had several girlfriends that couldn't get it and when they couldn't I sent them packing. Peoples pets are their family and generally speaking hold them in higher regard than most people. There's no changing that. If you can't accept that there's no room for you in their lives.

I used to have dogs, they were family would never have put them outside for a visitor. It was their home. I have a small cat now(I am disabled and can no longer have dogs unfortunately) and I wouldn't put her out of her for a visitor either. I have Carers come to help me and they have to except my little girl, if they don't like her then they can ask not to be sent to me again.

An ex friend knew I had a puppy. She brought a newspaper over to read (early 1990s) laid it on the floor and proceeded to get mad at the puppy for walking all over it and her. I told her the floor belongs to the dog, get up or get used to it

If it had ended with the guy leaving there'd be NAH. Obviously the dog owner is NAH for saying it's not working. It's also reasonable to not like dogs or want some time without the dog watching (especially if he was hoping for some action). But the moment he started bombarding the dog owner with messages afterwards he proved he was TAH.

I admit I’m pretty over the top with my cats, but I will never apologize for that. All you have to do is look at my Facebook page 😂. I have 4 cats, and their comfort comes before my own, and yes they eat better than I do. In fact my husband and I wouldn’t be married if he didn’t feel the same as me. They sleep on our bed and in our bed also. If I were to entertain a relationship, my first question would be do you love cats. If not, the relationship would end there. You were not rude, I’m afraid I would have been ruder 😊

This guy wasn't a guest in the way where you have a family friend over who's a bit spooked because the dog is big. This guy was a potential partner and if he can't stand just being in the room with the dog laying in the back, then how could he live with the dog? NTA. Him messaging you that you're a terrible person is very telling that HE is the terrible person. I don't trust anyone who wants me to put my dog up (unless they are scared of dogs) because it makes me think he wants to pull a move or hurt me. I ince introduced my late GSD Heidi to a friend who was deathly afraid of dogs. I held her by the collar and he met her and he was fine. Heidi was a huge female (around 100 lbs) but very mellow and friendly. A young guy afraid of dogs was able to get over his fear and ended up relaxing around her. I didn't force him to meet her, btw. He was willing to try. I miss that dog so much.

We dont even lock up the cats if worker ppl are over. Mainly due to having cat doors installed to all bedroom doors and the fact they hide/stay outta the way anyway

That last commenter irks me, OP could have explained his reasoning in a nice way, so could the date though! He gave no reason as to wanting the dog outside. Personally, I think both could have just... communicated better.

Who comes to someone else's house and just asks them to put their pets away without having a legitimate reason though? It's audacious to say the least.

The dog lives there, the guy was just visiting. He was rude to ask. I have cat allergies, and most of the time friends dont know unless Ive been indoors with their pet too long and I start to swell and sniffle. And even with actual allergies, I dont ask people to put their pet outside.

What's really the issue and no one seems to be addressing it, is after you two realized that the dog was a deal breaker, and it truthfully could have been anything, that this creeper KEEPS texting you, telling you "what a terrible person you are "? WT actual F???!! No!! From your story there was no long term relationship, no relationship at all! This guy is unhinged. Why not just go away dog hater?? Block him, BLOCK HIM!

Totally NOT THE ah. I cannot stress this enough!! I would not have been able to get him out of my house fast enough! You accept my dog just like me or GTFO. NO if ands or buts... My dog who was terrified of everyone (he was a rescue and still learning to dog) fell in love with my now-husband day 1... that's how I knew he was worth a shot! Please don't waste a worry on that jerk- you deserve better!!

Don't call yourself an AH because of your reaction. You've already apologized. Honestly I probably would have reacted the same way. I always warn people I have dogs. If you still want to come over be prepared. But then again, I don't have any friends that don't live dogs, cats, rats, all things fuzzy and warm.

So NTA if you have your dog all over your posts, it's obvious you have a dog and love it. The dog will be in the house. Reminds me of the commercials for the dogwood in the fridge, but it's dog food....kicks sister out the motor home door. All the family I need. Thank you very much. Don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya is better than, sic em!

I’m not comfortable spending time with people who aren’t comfortable with well-behaved, well -treated pets being in the same room absent medical reasons. Now, if your dog stinks from across the room, that’s a different story.

This guy wasn't a guest in the way where you have a family friend over who's a bit spooked because the dog is big. This guy was a potential partner and if he can't stand just being in the room with the dog laying in the back, then how could he live with the dog? I'm with OP, besides who even asks someone if they can throw their dog out for a bit (unless they have to be there and are allergic or have a really serious phobia)

"Is just an exuberant or over friendly greeting" that doesn't mean people want dog in their face. As the dog's owner, you should be able to train your dog for an appropriate greeting.

Don’t understand how he’s the AH? Why would he have to put the dog outside? If they were to continue a relationship, the dog would be around ALL THE TIME. Is he supposed to get rid of a dog because he’s dating someone? C’mon! It was a power play. If he would’ve put the dog outside, the guy would’ve continued with pushing the dog farther away. Good riddance!

That's a no for me dawg!!! Everyone knows my iguana and dog and cat are my life. Don't come over. I have occasionally put away my iguana for inspections and I the guy told me he tried before to come in while I was away but he is just to afraid of the iguana I will put her away the three minutes their taking care of what they need but it's know this is my babies house and they have a right to be comfortable in any part of the house they want to be in.

Dude can't even blame allergies for that demand. I'm severe allergic [put me in the er at 10 cause I couldn't breathe ordeal, got an epipen cause of it] and I love animals. I will purposefully visit people just to see their pets. I do bring my meds so I don't die. Heck I live with a dog. That man was probably the guy who as a kid killed his siblings pets for fun

Devils advocate here knock, knock. Perhaps he intended to rob, hurt or get aggressive with you and thought your dog would protect you. Maybe he needed the dog out of HIS way. I say you dodged a bullet. Move on. I know this could be way off base but weirder things…

I love animals, but I'm so tired of the people who say 'they're just friendly' while a dog is leaping into your face and clawing you for attention. Train your dogs, people. I'm 5' tall. They are right in my FACE! Labradors are usually the worst for this, and people assume everybody just loooves their '10lb 'puppy'. No, we don't. And we can't avoid them in public on walks.

"And we can't avoid them in public on walks"? What kind of shít is THAT? You CAN avoid dogs "in public" "on walks". Just, you know, WALK IN THE OTHER DIRECTION, or perpendicular, AWAY from the person who is walking their dog.
