In my opinion try to talk to them or ask if they want to, and if they don't, just a hug to comfort them would be enough, if they need it that is. A lot of times saying nothing and giving them their space to get over something is much better than saying "cheer up" which would basically make them feel you might not really care. Note that their mind is troubled with something and hearing that would just seem insensitive or annoying, even if you do care. Like telling a sick person, just get better, for example. Advice is great if they seem open to it, but if not, ask them if they would feel better talking or having their own space. Hugs are always +. That's my perspective on it :)

I have no advice to give, but I just wanted to tell you, random internet stranger, that you made me tear up. I've been the giver and the receiver of help, comfort, and 'advice,' an incredible amount of times. Some people just instinctively get what should be said, sometimes just knowing someone cares helps, even if they're saying something that seems dumb to you - and sometimes even the best advice from the most caring person falls flat because you're in too much pain to listen right now. So the fact that there are people who are aware they are 'cheer up people' and are aware that it's not always the answer - positive attitude is an amazing gift, and compassion and sensitivity take it to the next level.

To chunk in my two cents - it depends on the individual. You won't be able to help a close friend the same way you can help a random coworker or classmate you hardly know. But start with simple kind words and gestures, and then you'll get to know the person better and know when it's time to crack a joke and when it's time to let someone cry or complain, even if that seems - to you - like an absurd way to deal with your problems. Some people need to work through the pain before they move on. It's a real skill to know when the time is to encourage. I hope that the advice I managed to pull together after all is of some help.

I'm d'accord with you, SandSerif except the hugging. - I think hugging someone really depends on your relationship, situation and what person it is. I don't like being hugged from everyone, even if I feel bad. Sometimes the situation would change this feeling, but that is something intuitive. I think it is really helpful to listen and trying to understand the problem, if they tell you.

Thing is, that you probably don't know if the person really just complain. Sure, there are some people that just have bad days, but does this make the suffer the person feels less? I don't think so. I would say, if there is a person, that really seems to suffer because of depression it is more difficult to help, if you aren't a psychologist, but you should be there for them and support them to get help. If there is a person, that just have a bad day and you have the feeling, it is just complaining, just don't judge, maybe it is complaining, but maybe it is more, listen to them, try to understand them. Maybe they really just need an advice like "cheer up" but suggest them ideas of how to cheer them up, because just saying "cheer up" nobody helps.

The mental and emotional pain that depressed/anxious people suffer is very real. It doesn't matter where they live.
