Supermarket In Denmark Comes Up With A Brilliant Pricing Trick To Stop Hand Sanitizer Hoarding
While the whole Internet is laughing and creating memes about people hoarding toilet paper from supermarkets all over the world, there are a couple of other things particularly hard to buy these days. Masks and respirators and single-use medicinal gloves are among them but let’s not forget an item that’s been significantly more popular than usual as well. Well, yes, of course, it’s hand sanitizer. While people are stocking up on it like crazy, this supermarket in Denmark came up with a genius way to put an end to it with this simple yet brilliant pricing trick.

“Rotunden” supermarket in Denmark consider themselves to be Denmark’s most beautiful supermarket and describe themselves as an exclusive shopping environment with respect for people’s busy everyday lives. Apparently, their values are also humane enough to care not only about selling as much as possible but also getting the product to as many people in need as possible.
Apparently, the store is now selling one bottle of sanitizer for 40 DKK ($4.09) while two bottles cost 1,000 DKK ($95)

Just like a lot of supermarkets nowadays, they recently experienced people trying to hoard certain products and felt they couldn’t just leave it like that and ought to do something. Therefore, they came up with quite an unconventional pricing idea for the hand sanitizer they are selling after they noticed some people are buying way too much of it.
The store itself took to Facebook to explain their motivation behind this pricing

“Dear Customers,
We have a great responsibility to keep the business running, and we can only do that with everyone’s help and understanding. You can help in the following way:
We ask all customers to respect the distance between each other and our co-workers;
Sprinkle (likely sanitize or wash) hands off at the entrance and use gloves;
If you are a family, please allow only one person to purchase the purchases if possible;
There may be times when we limit how many customers we accept in the store at one time. We will keep you informed about any operating changes on Facebook. Take care and thank you for your understanding,” they state in the letter.
Most people loved the idea but some were convinced there were better ways to stop hoarders

By the way Soap ich much more efficient in killing the virus than sanitizer. Sanitzier is only important when you are outside and don't have access to water for washing your hands. Soap removes the fat layer around the virus killing it instantly, sanitizer doesn't so it takes longer for it to inactivate the virus. Now go hoard Soap and wash your hands ;)

And people, especially those with long fingernails, might want to think about getting a surgical brush with one row dedicated to clean under the nails.

doing this with food items like pasta, rice, tomato soup, etc. would be god-awful for big families that are looking to get by, too. Not everyone lives alone or in small households.

Maybe a bit harsh to up the price for just the second. But I otherwise support the idea completely. In the UK, we need to do that for toilet roll, sanitizers, soaps and now... fresh bloody vegetables. Which expire in just a few days anyway. So why bloody hoard????

Stores need to be doing more to prevent hoarding, and I'm surprised that many haven't. As soon as something appears that could cause people to panic buy and hoard, like a pandemic, those rules should go into effect. Reasonable limits that mean that everyone is still able to get what they need, and prevents unscrupulous people from buying up all of a store's supply just to turn around and resell it for a tidy profit.

This idea could run afoul of price gouging laws. In the US, 34 states have laws making it illegal to raise prices. In Wisconsin, when a state of emergency has been declared, prices cannot be raised more than 15% over the average price before the emergency. There are heavy fines and stores risk being shut down.

With all the hoarding going on there is one section of the community being entirely forgotten. Yes, supermarkets have set times for the aged and infirm but what about people living a long way from cities and towns who only come in to shop once a month or so? They come in to find shelves bare and are limited to 1 or 2 of whatever there is the same as locals who can come back tomorrow. These people live too far away to try their luck every day so face doing without or paying for accommodation in town to shop again tomorrow.

Won't work in other parts of the world. They will just buy multiple times. Ask their family members to Q with one each the. Go back in and buy another batch. Just straight fwd limiting it to one per person is simple and effective.

The storemanager has said “However, Rasmus Vejbæk-Zerr emphasizes that he would never think of taking $ 1,000 for a handsanitizer. “In these surreal times, I like to get some humor into it, because then people listen better. It's not a matter of money, but you have to think about it one more time. "

Generally I think it's a good idea to limit the amount of whatever someone is allowed to buy, but it should be more than one. I have elderly parents and buy stuff for them too, so if I'm only allowed a limited amount I have to make two trips and by then stuff could already be sold out again...

Very nice strategy, but I would make exceptions for people that are buying for elderly and disabled. Maybe have the supermarkets that are limiting purchases keep a record of who will need more than one by verifying the secondary party they are buying for. Plus, there is also the coupon strategy to get around this. You find an item on sale, but it's limit one per coupon per customer. So you have each of the members of your family go through the check out line one at a time, each with their one item and coupon rung up on separate transactions. That way you can buy over the limit without violating the conditions. Hoarders can do the same in this situation. Supermarkets need to stay diligent and citizens need to be honest and stop hoarding.

DIN’T sanitize your hands just wipe them on your clothes. Pretty soon we’ll be advised to stay 6’ from EVERYBODY > including spouses girl friends etc; which means everyone must sleep in their own bed if there’s only one BR like our home SOMEONE is going to have to sleep On the couch !!🤣 who do you think that’s going to be YEP !! Us men because we’re stronger cleaner 😂 and stupider : ))
