Oil & oil pastel on aerosol on two 24″ x 36″ canvases. Referenced from a 1920s, at the time the photo was taken it was dangerous & scandalous for women to dress “like men”. And now, almost 100 years later, it’s better but it seems we’re right back to fighting hate, discrimination and ridiculous social “norms” thanks to the extreme religious right.
Dangerous ties: Bobby & Ryder
Original photo was presumably taken in a night club – I loved the rebellious joy emanating from these two women. For pricing and info contact Chasen Galleries Sarasota 941-260-5787
Bobby
The name Bobby was my mother’s nickname as a child.
Ryder
A branch of my mother’s family tree was the Ryder family from Chatham MA -I’ve always loved that name…that and Mahitable, my grandmother’s name. I love incorporating the family history …
Ryder
As you can see, I kept the paint layers failry thin in most areas except for the white – I wanted the white to feel shockingly stark in contrast
Bobby’s tie
Most of work starts off with patterns and shapes that’re sprayed over with aerosols. The ties were no exception.
