“AITA For Euthanizing My Daughter’s Emotional Support Animal For Her Own Sake?”

Interview With Expert

We’ve long noticed that pets bring an immediate sense of comfort, but they can be especially helpful for people suffering from conditions like epilepsy, depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

For this family, having an emotional support dog helped their daughter, who is struggling with several disorders, feel more independent and confident. However, they were only able to get four years together before the pet suffered an accident. The dad refused to pay the steep $2000 vet bill and found an alternative, majorly freaking out his daughter.

Scroll down to find the full story and a conversation with Katie Lawlor, a doctor of clinical psychology, and a pet loss grief recovery specialist, Helen Goldberg, who kindly agreed to tell us more about the process of grieving a lost pet.

Losing a pet to euthanasia is especially difficult, as the decision-making can feel like a heavy and painful responsibility

Knowing that pets play an important part in many people’s lives, losing one can be a painful experience, similar to one of a loved human. If the animal was a working, service, or therapy dog, the person would not only be mourning a furry friend but also the loss of a coworker, independence, and emotional support.

Losing a pet to euthanasia is especially difficult, as the decision-making can feel like a heavy and painful responsibility. Bored Panda reached out to Katie Lawlor, a doctor of clinical psychology, and a pet loss grief recovery specialist, Helen Goldberg, who kindly agreed to tell us more about the process of grieving a lost pet.

Lawlor explains that a furry friend’s death can have a long-lasting effect. “Losing a companion animal, like losing a human loved one, leaves an extraordinary void in our lives. I don’t believe we ever move on from this loss; rather, scar tissue grows over the wound and our heart manage to keep beating. The rawness of grief comes from losing the animal that, no matter what happened out in the world that day, could fix everything once we were together. They were our home, and their closeness was a source of safety.”

She further mentions that grief is not linear. A person may feel strong one instant, then absolutely devastated the next. In particular, the first few weeks or months may feel completely surreal.

Goldberg says that after losing a pet, one of the most frequently spoken statements she hears from grieving pet parents is, “I am devastated, I feel like I am going crazy. Is there something wrong with me?”

She suggests that “The aforementioned statement is neither complicated nor long, yet it does carry much weight. Behind the words are feelings of shame, loneliness, fear, misunderstanding, judgment, and isolation, to name a few.”

Pets often give people purpose, company, and stability, and after they’re gone, the owner is confronted with deafening silence, overwhelming loneliness, no one to take care of, and no one to share their space with. “One’s home should be a place of happy memories that they shared with their pet, instead, it has become a place they want to escape; too much silence, too much stillness, too much sadness, and too many triggers,” she adds.

The process can be made easier by spending quality time together and knowing what to expect

In cases where the pet’s passing away is planned, Lawlor advises to be as present as possible in the moment. She even proposes the option of taking sick leave or some time off to spend more quality time together.

Another option she suggests is creating a plan with a veterinarian to help relieve some of the anxiety of the unknown about the decision-making process near the end of life. “Questions you might want to ask include options for having the vet come to your home that day, and how you would like to receive your animal’s remains – there are so many beautiful ways to memorialize them from urns to ashes jewelry,” she adds.

“I fully appreciate this is a conversation all of us dread, but the more prepared we can be with regard to logistics and practicalities, the more stable we will feel when the time comes. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, coming to the gentle understanding that you will know what to do, I promise. Trust your heart,” Lawlor says.

Goldberg agrees that something that can make the process of euthanasia easier is knowing what to anticipate. “Knowledge is power and equips a pet parent with what to expect. Some pet parents check off a bucket list over the last several weeks, sharing timeless memories, taking pictures and videos, and journaling the memories. Unfortunately, not every pet parent gets the time to do the above as the loss may come quicker than anticipated or the pet’s death is totally unexpected,” she says.

Someone who lost a pet can be supported by a loved one’s presence

When asked what can be done to support someone who has lost a pet, Lawlor recommends letting them know that they’re in your thoughts and your heart. “This can be as simple as a quick text message: “Please know I’m thinking of you, and I am here if I can ever be a source of comfort.

Often, we are afraid to say the wrong thing in grief, so we say nothing at all. Given this, it is absolutely ok to say something along the lines of “I don’t know the right words to say to you at this moment, but please just know you are in my heart.” I always add the words “no need to respond” at the end, as I don’t want the guardian to feel any obligation to reply.”

She notes that oftentimes the pet parent may feel overwhelmed and therefore unable to communicate what they need. “I would encourage you to think of what might be most helpful to them without expecting a follow-up response. Some may want company during this time, while others will gravitate toward privacy. An emailed gift certificate to a favorite restaurant or coffee shop is always appreciated, as is a donation in the name of the animal who has passed to a cause the guardian cares deeply about,” advises Lawlor.

Goldberg also emphasizes the importance of being present. “Give the pet parent a shoulder to lean on, don’t abandon them because you are feeling inadequate or uncomfortable, make yourself available, and do not ignore their loss.”

Something she notes you shouldn’t do is tell them that everything is going to be fine, as for them it doesn’t feel like it will. Additionally, don’t suggest getting another pet to fill the void or keep themselves distracted. “When someone is in the throws of grief, they need to be allowed to feel, think, and respond in whatever way comes naturally. For the person who has lost their pet, give yourself permission and grace to grieve and heal. Like any deep wound, it will take time,” she says.

She doesn't want a new dog, guess her bond wasn't as unbreakable and solid.... WTAF. She grieves the dog! Naturally you just can't replace it. What a piece of s**t.

Geez, I can't imagine why that poor woman has mental health problems after growing up with such a "dad" /s And calling her "acting distant and mopey" after you just killed her dog is really something else 🤮

Yup, the reason for some of her issues now becomes apparent. If dad is this cold hearted about a 2K vet bill, then I wonder what other inhumane things he has justified to her. And the mom went along with it??

Sociopath, heartless, monster, and completely, definitively the AH. I'm certain this scum only posted this story online out of pride to tell what he did. Disgusting. "Excellent at separating emotion in preference of logic" = Exactly what sociopaths say and also what a lot of AH say after behaving like garbage or saying something horrible. And this a*****e dares to boast...I myself am rather logical and Cartesian but... that doesn't mean being a piece of garbage who makes others suffer and is proud of it, damn it "Now we're moving on, the end" = "I'm a coward who got hit by reality and I don't want to talk about it anymore." That's enough internet for the week... It disgusts me. You know what, I'm going to go cuddle with my dog

Both my mum and I are very good at separating emotion from logic when necessary (Asperger's helps). It helped when we made the end-of-life decision for my horse, to look at what was best for her regardless of how hard it would be to say goodbye. THAT'S appropriate separation. This is just justification of not giving a literal flying fùck. No wonder the D has issues with a F like that.

What I can't believe is that he thinks offering to buy her a new dog and her refusing means she didn't love the other dog. Holy s**t, how dense is that guy? His daughter is literally still mourning the loss of her dog and he offers to get another one? I reckon she will want another one, but after what "Dad" did I reckon she'll be moving out ASAP and buying it herself (after she's finished mourning) so he has no control over it.

The responders covered it beautifully. What a s****y thank you to the dog that supported your daughter and turned her life around. What a shallow pathetic set of excuses for the decision you made. You are at the core of your daughters emotional issues and at 16 this is a deep Scar she will remember forever. You claim you are not a sociopath but you can reason your way into something like this? What other less than Stella family decisions have you nutted out with this ice cold reasoning skill of yours? She has anxiety and trust issues, well I wonder why, hmmm?

You are describing a sociopath there and the callous lack of care of the trauma you caused and thinking its all OK now she's at the therapist, I did nothing really wrong" makes me think Narcissist

Terrifying: he seems to have no idea of emotional bonds, love, grief. He used the word gratitude but doesn't know what it means. Pretty clear where the daughter's MH problems come from. So disgusted had to come back to add that he sounds like he's laying off an employee who's no longer required. There's no evidence of even considering what's best for the dog.

"The dog finished serving its purpose." ... "I didn't want my daughter's mental state to spiral if she had to work." This guy should go to the therapist himself he seriously believes he doesn't have a heavy mental problem himself. Absolute garbage man, I'd say so much worse if BP wouldn't turn half of my words into asterisks. I bet he's also gaslighting his daughter and wife about the death of the pet and majorly responsible for her mental state being this bad in the first place.

OMG that OP is truly a sociopath and any relationship with his daughter is totally f*cked. I just hope the Therapist can assist the daughter in not self harming or regressing with her depression. I have a number of dogs here - one who is now 14....I would no more euthanise her without trying everything to give her quality of life, than fly......

I've bullied my daughter into not showing strong emotions or giving me any consequences, I'm sure it's fine. My emotions must decide how everyoe lives, but childrens emotions are just an illness and they p**s me off. Poor girl, even without autoimmune health complications, it's easy to see why confidence, anxiety and depression have been so difficult. Hopefully she can keep her head down and move out as quickly as possible.

This is all about perspective. The daughter sees Juni as a companion/friend/'little sister', while her father sees Juni as 'just' an animal/pet/'a thing' that has no right to live. A human is like the daughter, while a sociopath/a psychopath/mental health problem is the father. It's like this: if you break your feet because of falling down the stairs, do you go to the paramedic for healing or just cut off the entire leg?

Omg! It's your dog as you paid for it? Pretty sure every parent of a child pays for their pet unless it's given to them. It was only half it's possible age, you could afford the vets bill but had her dog put to sleep without even letting her say goodbye! You are a cold hearted, non animal lover. Men who don't love dogs have real problems. My heart bleeds for your daughter.

The edit made it worse. You know for a "logical" guy he is not that smart. He says that her not wanting another dog is "proof" that her bond with Juni was not that strong. Uh.... what??? That's the complete OPPOSITE. If she wanted a dog so soon after losing Juni then THAT would be the proof. But if she doesn't it's because she's still mourning the loss of her dog and it shows just how strong her bond was. Wow what an idiot. Too bad the reddit comments are disabled and I can't comment to him. So I'll just rant here.

The dog was 5 and they generally don't live beyond 9-10 years. WTF by this standard, the father should be scheduling his euthanasia now since he's already midway in his life cycle; in fact he's most likely over his limit. This man is a prime example of why I dislike people.

What the hell did I even read? This is a horrible thing to do to someone and horrible thing to do to a dog who is a family member! He can't afford 2000$???? I would pay 2000$ for my cat if she needed and I live in poor country and earn much less than that per month! And I still would find the way to get the money if someone, anyone is sick and needs it. Pushing 5 years? Dogs can live up to 20 years (rarely, but still)! Yes, he deserved all the insults. Poor daughter and poor Juni.

It's not your dog if you bought it for your daughter as a gift. You can't "gift" something to someone then take it back when it suits your agenda. I suffer with mental health conditions and the worse thing you can do to someone dealing with these complex emotions is to take away their voice. And you took away your daughters voice. Shame on you. You can think you made the right choice all you want. Doesn't make you right. Your daughter offered to pay, which was her right. If it wasn't about the money then you should have just paid and let fate take care of the rest. A dog is for life, not just until a big bill comes along. This is why pet insurance is so vitally important. If my parents did this to my emotional support animal you better believe that those relationships would be irreparably damaged. Your lack of empathy or consideration of what your daughter was feeling, what she wanted and what she needed has likely put all the progress she has made right back to sqaure one maybe worse

My husband and I paid well over 8,000 in less than a year and a half for our Daisy who was 7 at the time. She needed both her CCLs(dog acl) worked on. I didn’t bat an eye. When our kitten got ahold of Easter grass and needed an endoscopy to clear her belly we didn’t bat an eye at the $2000 bill. When my at the time 10 year cat was told he was suffering because he was throwing up blood, we got a second opinion. We were told we should euthanize. He was slowly going into anaphylactic shock. All he needed was a shot of epi and he was fine. The two vet bills combined were over $3000. He’s 15 now and unfortunately in kidney failure but he is so loved and will be till the end. Point is it’s not always about the money and age. If I take an animal in I took the responsibility of caring for and giving it the best life. People definitely thought with our dog we were crazy spending what we did but how do you justify putting a member of your family down for an ortho injury?

Yeah, sure, the daughter has forgiven him and will get over her mopeyness with her favourite fast food.... no, she will very likely cut contact with the father. The therapist might actually suggest going NC to her. - The father sounds like a sociopath or at least like an undiagnosed autistic person (meaning that he doesn't understand how autism affects him, not that autistic people are generally heartless). Edit: I'm sorry, it was not my intention to dismiss autistic people as heart- or emotionless. I just meant that the father seemed to have a rather logical approach (the dog served its purpose, and can now go), which went with my understanding of how some autistic people think. I will educate myself better.

Virgil Blue

Actually most autistic people have the same deep emotions, but have a hard time to express them clearly in a way neurological people recognise. To put it simply, we have a bit of a "software issue" and (partly) lack the automatic/instinctive reactions most people have. That's why we can look/seem callous or emotionless, but I can assure you that's just on the outside. No beef with you, but it irks me so many people still hang on to the Hollywood idea that we are emotionless robots.

The OP seems to think that euthanizing the dog will teach his daughter to face hard situations. What this experience will teach her is that her father is heartless. Imagine what it does to her to worry that if he gets her another dog, he might kill it, too. There are much better ways to support people in difficult situations. Empathy, for example, is not being "soft" on someone - among its uses is telling someone "Yes, your emotions are valid". That at least makes hard feelings seem normal and near-universal.

Yes, this dude is an A$$hole for how he went about it and how he told her what was happening, etc. HOWEVER, as a former veterinary nurse, we don't know the full scope of the dog's injuries. A $2000 surgery that may or may not work from the client's perspective is more than likely not going to work, just the veterinarian offering the only solution they have, knowing it won't help but may give them some hope. In a situation like this ordinary people telling everyone else "The vet said this thing and that thing and the other thing" only half of it is ever true, just simply because you don't take all the information in during a crisis of this caliber. I'm positive he made the right choice in euthanizing the dog, he just went about conveying his message on Reddit and to his daughter very very badly.

I think thats an understandment but i do agree. For the most part Vets don't offer euthanasia lightly. If they offer it it means the other option isnt great. Bit his attitude and voiced thoughts are unforgivable "she didn't realky have an unbreakable bond because she doesn't want to replace them"

What about the vet? What did they say? I'm sorry but here I would consider the dogs' best interest. Either the dog had a reasonable chance to live a happy life after surgery and you spit the $2000 without blinking or you get your daughter involved in the final decision. RIP Juni.

I was committed to spending $10,000 on treatments to save my dog, the only reason I didn't was because the vet informed me that the prognosis did not look good and she was too far gone for the treatments to realistically make her better. I couldn't imagine giving up on my family member over $2,000.

The arrogant tone of this man is frankly bone-chilling. I don't think the young women has forgiven him so much as she is just biding her time till she can get away from him. He's treatment of this poor creature as expendable, and his decision to euthanize them when he knew he could have afforded the surgery to the point of insisting it was HIS right to put the animal down, it screams volumes about how egotistical he is. If this were a couple of decades prior he probably would've sucked that poor girl in an abusive asylum and let them lobotomize her. Buying her favorite fast-food isn't going to stave off the next post where he's Kvetching that his daughter has either cut ties or refuses to share for him in his old age.

So now we know the daughter has emotional problems because I doubt this is OP’s first rodeo. He’d probably have the daughter put down too if he thought he could get away with it. I suspect her emotional health will improve immeasurably once she leaves home and goes no contact.

Seriously, if I knew her, I'd offer to euthanize her pathetic excuse of a father. My Dad ... is a weirdo. He's exhausting at times, panics for reasons way too small, and we share a few coping methodologies that usually are frowned upon (none that involve violence, let alone death). But ... he'd never, for whatever reason, attempt such. And, as I read the mother agreed with him - she seems to be no better. She should get rid of them, and maybe, by removing the reason for all her mental issues, they may get better even without some of Dad's Bros impersonating a therapist. Or is that a real one? Really? What's the therapist's take on this? Agrees with AH parents? Or attempts to actually help her by getting her TF out of there???

Your daughter doesn’t want A dog, she wants HER dog, which you had euthanized. You could have gotten her out of school so she could be with Juni, you could’ve waited until your daughter got home. You don’t mention if you asked if the vet would take monthly payments. Many vets do, especially for support animals and working animals. I can’t get over that you had Juni euthanized without your daughter being present. Without letting her talk to the vet. If Juni was suffering, and would always be in pain, your daughter should’ve known-as you say, she’s an adult now. If Juni would recover, you could’ve made arrangements for surgery and treatment. Now, to make matters worse, you’re getting her favorite fast food for dinner??? I hope she threw it in your face. A*****e is too good a word for you. You’re a controlling, domineering idiot who thinks your way is always the right way. I bet you’re the reason your daughter is in therapy.

$2,000 is actually a pretty small vet bill. We have paid $800 just for a regular "dental" for one of our dogs. I have paid $1,000 for suturing and watching the dog overnight. If a $2,000 vet bill would cause a person to kill their dog, then they shouldn't have a dog. Also, whether he paid for it or not, the dog was really his daughter's, who is an adult and should be able yo make these decisions herself. This guys is either evil or just a fictionalizing internet troll.

I think the dad isn't (or didn't mean to be) as evil as everyone is saying. That being said... he is the AH because losing a family member is hard enough without adding that this one is an emotional support family member that she relied on. Did he not realize the emotional toll this would take on her? And, I'm sorry, but $2000 is not too much to spend to save the life of such an important part of her life.

He's evil because of how calous he is. Hes not saying "tragically we had to put juni down because she realistically wasnt going to survive. I was emotional and tragic." He was saying "i dont care at all about animaks and its childish for people to be attached. I dont believe people really form string bonds with them, and they exist to serve a purpose."

Crutch? "Vent" to her therapist? You are a cruel and heartless man and it is no wonder your daughter is having emotional and mental issues. You created them. She doest want another dog because you have made it very clear that you will throw it out like a dirty sock. She is telling you she forgives you so that you don't do the same to her. There is nothing you can do to ever deserve her forgiveness. You might, with a lot of therapy, learn to earn it but I doubt it. Other living beings aren't real to you, so yes, you are a sociopath. Check yourself into a long term mental health facility that will not release you until you realize in the depth of whatever tiny soul you have that you were wrong and have learned to be a decent person. I certainty hope your daughter finds a way to get as far away from you as possible and has a good life which she will never be able to have with you in the picture.

Shes grieving and will eventually go no contact once she's found her way and is no longer dependent on her parents. Cannot believe the absolute lack of empathy that he has to misinterpret her grief and feeling that 1) her friend cannot be replaced and 2) she's not ready to open her heart yet to another dog as "she's fine and we're good, she doesn't want another dog, we're going to have a family movie night, problem solved". The only time.i regret not having children is times like this because i feel so awful for young people with parents like this. Dad has no idea this is the kind of thing that kids don't ever forget. Also, so what if the dogs life is "half over"? I bet his life is half over too, but he'd appreciate the opportunity to live the rest of it.

YTA! I spent every penny I had when my dog had cancer just so I could have more time w/ her n so my husband could be home to enjoy time w/ her before she passed. (He's a truck driver n gone for 6-10 weeks at a time) didn't have the money to be spending thousands? No. But that dog was my best friend for 12 years n she wasn't suffering. She was still a very healthy dog outside of urethra cancer. If someone put my dog down w/out me there.. regardless of the reason... especially if they could afford to TRY to help my dog... I'd never talk to them again. Especially if it were my own mother. I understand the dog was hit by a car. But you have money! Why not do EVERYTHING you can for this animal who saved your daughter's life? Atleast until she could get there n say goodbye. As long as there was a small chance the dog could pull thru, I would have done EVERYTHING for that dog.. Like wtf is wrong w/ you? It would be one thing if there was no chance the dog would recover or if the dog was in so much pain that it would be cruel to even try... but it sounds like there was a good shot that the dog would recover. Otherwise (most) vets wouldn't even give you that option... there's a chance your dog could die from getting their teeth cleaned or anytime they go under anesthesia... even if it's for something not super serious. So there's ALWAYS A CHANCE a pet might lose their life no matter what... so imagine not getting your dog it's shits bc there's a chance that the dog could have a reaction to it... imagine not doing surgery if your dogs leg got broken just bc there's a chance it might not survive.... like wtf? You just gave up n didn't even try to save your daughter's dog. YTA

He says his daughter now forgives him but is 'mopey' and that his wife now agrees with him but just 'didn't like his tone.' I suspect this guy is probably TERRIBLE at reading and understanding the feelings of others around him. He doesn't understand how his dislike of animals coloured his willingness to write off a vet bill which he actually could have afforded if he thought about it. Omg, no!! I would absolutely go NC, if a parent did that to one of my beloved pets. My mum & sisters thankfully did all they could to try & help my late baby rabbit, but he was sadly too ill & the vet said it was kinder to put him to sleep than let him suffer more pain. I was there when it happened & it did tear a huge hole through my heart, but it would’ve been mentally worse for me if I didn’t have those last moments with him. I now have a little chihuahua who I’ve had for 4 years now & she’s one of the fam now. We have pet insurance, if she ever needs treatment. If we still had to pay more, I’d gladly sell my PS5 & my expensive/rare piece of furniture just to save her. The person who wrote this Reddit story is absolutely in the wrong & deserves all the hate they get, IMO. That’s only my opinion, though. Absolutely devastated for that poor girl. 😢💔🐕

Unpopular opinion: when you get an animal, decide beforehand how much you are willing and able to pay for the vet. In my house it's 500€ per year per cat for extra vet costs. I still think it should have been the daughter's decision on how to treat her animal.

Hope he ends up in a nasty care facility one day, wearing diapers and fed through a G-tube. Hope he has years and years to ruminate over his waste of a life. May he be a piece of meat that keeps on living, with no friends or family to care about him. Suffer, you cruel POS.

What I couldn't believe is how this father thinks his daughter does not want another ESA. For goodness sake. The animal would not be safe. Of course she does not want another animal with a parent who puts it down. "Guess her bond was'nt as unbreakable and solid." You really don't get it at all.

willing to bet that the REAL reason the daughter doesnt want a new dog is because she knows OP will just kill it the moment it so much as coughs, and the mom is equally as guilty as he is for supporting him

I sincerely hope YOU get hit by a car and your daughter LOVINGLY decides YOUY aren't worth the money and effort and has YOU euthanized!!!! You deserve it. And I also hope she gets the strength to tell you to your face what a heartless monster you are and then cuts you out of her life completely. You couldn't be a bigger AH. If Jupiter had an AH,. you'd STILL be a bigger one. Hell, if the UNIVERSE had an AH, you EOULD STILL BE THE BIGGER ONE!!! I hope with all my heart and soul you get what you deserve. Cancer. Run over by a steamroller. Fall into a grain auger. Anything that kills you only after you suffer for a LONG and PAINFUL time. And even THAT isn't enough. What an emotionless, insensitive, abusive, manipulative POS you are. I hope your wife divorces you.

Op really doesn't understand the concept of emotional support dog. It is emotional support, his daughter felt safe and was able to extend for social circle. Also it was not his dog, he may of paid for the dog it was in reality his daughter's dog. So she should have been involved in the decision about the dogs future.also tge way he spoke to his daughter is cold and nasty

Wtaf?! As someone who has a ESA, I couldn’t imagine how hard it would be for me to grasp her sudden death just because my parents wouldn’t pay for her life saving surgery!? My dog is only three, and her breed often lives for 15 years. And the whole thing about “she doesn’t want a new dog, guess her bond wasn’t as unbreakable and solid”, she’s GRIEVING you monster! He’s definitely the a*****e here. What a joke. Hope his wife comes to her senses and realizes what a horrible person she’s married to. D**n.

YTA I don't know if the dog even got hit by a bus. So you love your daughter more than anything? No you don't. I don't believe that your daughter got over it either. Fetching her favourite food? Great compensation for how much HER dog gave her. You are a self centered controller. Hopefully a bus will knock you down.

When a man shows you how he treats animals he is also showing you the quality of his character. One day someone he cares about will be hovering over his hospital bed wrestling with the decision to spend the money or pull the plug.. I hope it's pulled.

"I couldn't justify spending money on a dog that saved my child's life even through I have the money to do so"

(And you have to wonder about someone who is uncomfortable around all animals.) This guy sounds like he has a chip missing.
