Dad Let His Daughter’s Friend Use Sanitary Pads In His House, Gets Called A Creep

If there was an ultimate parents’ guide to surviving teen years, it would be a bestseller. But the anticipated time of upheaval is so much more complex than that.

The child who’s going through it is experiencing dramatic changes both physically and emotionally, and one such thing for every woman is getting one’s first menstrual period. And this is the moment where parents’ support and guidance is crucial.

No wonder many parents struggle to find the right time to talk about periods with their kids. But it seemed like this separated dad who this story is about has it all figured out. “I grew up with 3 sisters and am very aware of the monthly period,” he wrote in a post on r/AITA.

So he prepared his daughter for the day, “went out and bought a ton of products that she can choose from,” as well as “sent her a few videos to watch as well to avoid any issues.” It really helped for the daughter when she got her first period, but turned into a very unpleasant situation when the same happened to her friend who was staying over.

Read on for the full story below and be sure to share your thoughts in the comments.

A separated dad has recently shared an incident in which the mom of his daughter’s friend called him a ‘creep’ for allowing her to use sanitary products while staying over

Most girls get their period between ages 10 and 15 years, but every girl’s body has its own schedule. With women and girls, as well as some trans men and non-binary people menstruating, the fact is obvious—the majority of our population menstruates every month. Incredibly, in many places in our society, the period topic is still a sensitive one, and even considered a taboo.

According to Karen Pickering, the co-author with Jane Bennett of “About Bloody Time: the Menstrual Revolution We Have to Have,” there is genuine disgust, shame and stigma attached to menstruation and menopause, where women and girls feel shamed for first having periods at all, and then a different kind of stigma when menstruation ends. Karen believes that “this is a kind of flawed cultural logic, where we are all asked to participate in a falsehood.” The common societal response is to simply shut down the discussion altogether and make it into a safe space.

The authors also ran an eye-opening survey on 3500 women and found that shockingly, “girls felt they couldn’t talk to their fathers about periods, or even in some cases, that their close relationships changed after they started menstruating, with one respondent describing how she used to love sitting on her dad’s lap and how after her periods started, that never happened again.”

This likely has to do with the fact that traditionally, our society has preferred parents of each gender to be in charge of discussing their respective area of biological expertise. Today, more and more parents are aware of the fact that having different anatomy is not a reason to disqualify them from engaging in discussion with children about their bodies, although there’s still a long way to go.

People had a lot to comment on this whole situation, with many showing their support for the dad

Yep. I work in an all male shop. Share bathroom and lockers. One day I I dropped my wrapped tampon earlier in the day in the bathroom while changing clothes. Didn't notice it til it was time to change for home. It's a messy shop, with other crap on the floor, so I guess other folks noticing it and leaving it on the floor wasn't all that unusal. At first I felt humiliated. Terrified of what they must have thought about me. But then I realized every single one of these guys wouldn't be here without their mom's period. Who really is the creep? The one who behaves like a responsible, empathic person or the one who assumes a man helping a girl automatically is a sexual offender? With more people like this guy and less like the bigot mother life for teenagers would be much easier.

From the screaming I believe this girl had never had it explained to her about menstruation. Seeing that in her underwear for the first time she probably thought she was going to bleed to death. Thus the screaming. Of course the dad is going to run in. He let his well educated daughter take over from there. Obviously the daughter provided the girl with some well needed education about all of it. Sad that a 13 yo had to take on her friend's mother's responsibility. NTA. It's called being a good parent, even to someone else's child.

I seriously don't understand what the girl's mom would have preferred happen, but dad definitely shouldn't have that girl over again, unless there's a whole group of friends who can serve as witnesses if he gets accused of anything.

A leftover habit from when I was parenting my late daughter is I always have a pack of sanitary towels in my bathroom - . You never know when you may have an unexpected guest who'd appreciate the use of one, and as my daughter told me it's often embarrassing asking for sanitary wear, they're just there for any of my mates/guests etc. to use when they need. Glad my fiance didn't think there was anything creepy in it when we first started going out.

I just place this here: Some uneducated parents think a tampon is sexual and thus forbid their daughters to use them... Don’t ask me how this evolved, it’s not logical in any way... But this is my guess for the mother to accuse him of being a creep, as he helped her daughter put something in herself...

He stated that his daughter helped and tampons weren’t mentioned, like it was stated from the girls reaction her mother probably didn’t even spend the time to have any kind of talk with her daughter which is sad.

I will never understand how periods, which are a natural thing, came to be seen as so taboo. There is nothing creepy or wrong about a father having menstrual products in his home for his daughter and their is nothing wrong with him helping out his daughter's friend. Actually, he didn't do anything other than investigate screaming in his house and inform the mother about what happened. His daughter took care of the rest. If this was the mother's reaction, we now know why the girl screamed.

Sounds like this poor girl got no preparation whatsoever about what to expect. Which would be outrageous enough if she were 10 or 11, but if she's the same age as the daughter, she's 13! That is way past old enough to have been taught about menarche.

That's so sad and unfortunate for this amazing dad!! He more then prepared his daughter for the moment and she was informed when it did happen!! We need more fathers in daughters lives that are able to talk to their daughters about puberty and what's happening to their bodies! Hell by the mother's reaction to the fathers actions just means we need more parents that are better able to go into this type of situation without embarrassed their daughters or making them feel bad about it!!! The education system doesn't help and shouldn't be relied on!

Oh my goodness, I am so concerned for the friend. How could she be THIRTEEN and have no idea what a period is? Many girls start getting them at 11 and 12; I had several friends get them at 10 when we were kids. What kind of monster would deny her child the barest of education on what her body will be going through every month for the next 40 years? How terrified she must have been, and humiliated - even though they were both being kind - that her friend and friend's father knew so much more than she did about her OWN BODY. Horrifying.

This is one of the many reasons my husband and I decided before we even had kids that we wouldn't be doing sleepovers. There just too much risk, whether it's genuine or perceived. My husband won't even give lifts to my daughters' friends without me, because he just doesn't want there to be any chance some overly-protective patent will think something is up. It's been rough telling our kids 'no' all the time, but we hope they understand when they're adults. We allow "late-overs" where they can stay as late as they want until everyone is ready to sleep, then we pick them up, they come home to sleep, then they go back in the morning early so they can do breakfast and any other next day activities. It's made the disappointment less.

Yep. Yep. Yep.

My parents did this from the very beginning. Until we were teenagers if dad had to drive someone home he didn't go anywhere near the vehicle until she was there. When we became teenagers it became the kid's job to go along. I used to think it was strange because no one else did it, but now that I'm older...we have the same rule in our house with our ten-year-old daughter and her friends. I had sleepovers with cousins and friends from church pretty much whenever we wanted, but friends from school never happened. I was also never allowed to go to them, but my mom was raped by an uncle at 14 so I can see where she's coming from. The sleepovers are what I relaxed because I always wanted to go to sleepovers/host sleepovers with my "real" friends and I kind of like the chaos of them. You don't get that with an only child.

NTA. You did everything right, for your own daughter and her friend. You gave them the tools they needed and stepped back, you didn't take out a tampon, ask the friend to lower her underwear and then jam the tampon inside her. From the friends horror and screaming at having her first period, and the moms reaction to you being helpful, my guess is the mom didn't discuss any of this with her own daughter, doesn't want to be involved with it (awful parenting) and needs someone to blame for her own inadequacies as a parent. You did a good job, do NOT feel bad about this, you're a good guy. Hopefully your daughter at least can see that. I'd go file a quick report to the police just to cover your butt from any future accusations, because you're a grown male who was around a young female, and the mother may decide to try and use that against you by filing a false report in future. Cover your butt, just let the police know what happened to keep yourself in the right. Best of luck.

No. Don’t involve the police unless the mother reports it. But document it yourself in a journal or calendar. Write down everything that happened and was said. Get you daughter to verify it and have her write her story next to your story if she doesn’t mind. Once u get the police involved you’re going to have it all blown out of proportion. If this is the US the police are mandated in following up. Who knows how they may respond to it. Do your own documentation.

You are best father you can be to your daughter in this matter and her friends including, the mother should be ashamed of herself but maybe it was just panic reaction, maybe she thought she has couple more years before her daughter turns to a woman, etc. I'd give her call and asks if she wants to discuss that because she hurt your feelings in front of both girls and would be nice if she wanted to explain what was so inappropriate.

My daughter, who then lived with her mom on the opposite coast, came to visit when she was just about the age to begin menstruating. I discussed it with her mom, bought a variety of sanitary products, and made sure there would be a woman friend around to help her use them should the need arise. (It didn't) Fast forward 16 years and she's using my bathroom and finds them and asks, not knowing why I had them, if she could take some tampons as she was due. We shared a laugh when I told her they'd been waiting for her for years.

What was the dad supposed to do ? I think the Moms view on a normal bodily function and a NORMAL parents reaction to it is weird. That kids Mom has a messed up repressed view of sexuality. Her daughter will grow up feeling ashamed of her developing body. She will grow up feeling ashamed of sex and feeling dirty. AND now this idiotic overreacting Mother will spread nasty rumors calling this man a creep which he will not live down. The talk will be twisted and added to until the whole neighbourhood will think he did something predatory and sexual to his daughters friend.

It's odd to me that a 13 year old girl doesn't have any awareness of periods and would scream at the sight of blood. I also think it's really odd that the girl's mother thinks this guy is a "creeper" for taking care of her child. Assuming mom knew he was a single dad, why would she let her kid spend the night in the first place if she thought he was "creepy"? Mom is the creepy one, IMO.

I would be BEYOND grateful had one of my daughters been in this position and the single dad was prepared and not weird about it. Can every parent from this moment on please PLEASE teach your kids both girl and boy that periods are NORMAL and OK??? Please teach your boys not to be grossed out. Make them kits for their backpacks in case one of their girl-friends have an emergency at school. Please include both tampons and pads as you don't know their preference. Add some chocolate and midol for good measure. And if you have a friend that acts like this mother, please punch her.

My guess is that the Mom was embarrassed that she hadn't prepared her daughter for this. If there's screaming and crying, chances are the daughter did not really get the kind of help and preparation from her Mom that she needed, and obviously didn't know what to expect or what to do. My guess is the Mom was embarrassed about not doing her job, so she took it out on the guy. How dare he be a responsible adult! Oh my! But I also feel it's not 100% the Mom's fault. Despite all our progress, we continue to treat menstruation as something taboo instead of a natural part of life. We continue to treat at as something to be ashamed of. We shouldn't.

No doubt in my mind that the mother will be informing her friends that this guy is a sexual predator and a creep, twisting the facts as she goes along.

I'm scared for this girl. If her mother is freaked out by being open about periods, I can't imagine how she would teach the girl about responsible sex. I hope OP encourages his daughter to be available to that girl to talk about things like that (I assume you're also good with your daughter about that). I wouldn’t be letting the kid sleep at your house ever again sadly for your own protection. This is the sort of nut that falsely accuses an ex of abusing the kids just for revenge.
