About 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, roughly 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. The good news is that these numbers are a result of a steady decline—according to ASPCA estimates, there were approximately 7.2 million dogs and cats entering U.S. shelters annually around 2011. And while 710 thousand animals who enter shelters as strays are returned to their owners, 3.2 million are adopted.
To help the latter figure grow even more, the subreddit r/BeforeNAfterAdoption urges people to share the amazing difference a loving family can make on an abandoned or mistreated animal. It has 360K members posting pictures that reveal the spectacular physical and mental transformations their adorable pets have gone through after leaving the shelter, and Bored Panda is ending this difficult year with some of the posts that went viral on the subreddit this December.

Frankie Was Born With Four Ears And An Eye Deformity But He’s Still Purrfect
This cat is a magic cat from a magic land, his other eye sees the other realm
Is "Frankie" short for "Frankenstein"? I think that's a great name, if so.

The coronavirus pandemic has affected lots of American animal shelters. "Since it began, COVID-19 has put an immense amount of strain on animal shelters across the country. Because this is an ever-changing situation, each shelter is facing unique challenges specific to its community,” Adoptions Promotions Manager at the ASPCA, Kelly DiCicco, told Bored Panda in an earlier interview.
These Two Were Adopted 3 Years Apart From Different Cities. A DNA Test Revealed That They Are Long Lost Siblings!
Amazing! I would love to find the brother of the dog I adopted. There is a huge adoption event called My Furry Valentine.... I always volunteer at it, but this time wanted a dog as well. When I sad Legs, the dog I adopted, they just told me his brother just got adopted......I couldnt let him go back alone....he is mine now!
Emptying cages in 2020 had been especially important because many shelters have reduced staffing due to social distancing requirements—which has meant reductions or limits to the number and types of services offered to the public. "Additionally, shelters have felt the financial impacts of the pandemic, with reduced donations and an inability to host in-person fundraising events, which often play a key role in annual fundraising efforts," DiCicco said.
The Day After My Cat Died, I Went To The Shelter And Told The Employee That I’d Adopt The Cat That Had Been There The Longest. She Said, “It’s An Older Black Cat... Are You Sure?” I Was Never So Sure Of Anything In My Life. Meet Dita Von Panzer

It's ok. We all deal differently. I'm the same I need a grieving period. I do like the idea of adopting the one who has been their the longest
Load More Replies...By adopting an animal in need – no matter the species, breed, or size – people are saving that animal's life as well as freeing up valuable shelter space and resources for other animals in need.
Also, a huge benefit of adopting animals from a shelter is that shelter staff know the animals well and can provide detailed information about an animal's history, medical needs, behavior, and temperament. They also consider a potential adopter's lifestyle, home environment, and the animal's potential compatibility with children and other animals in the home, helping the person to bring home the best match they can find.

As A Single Dad, I Had To Put My Foot Down And Tell My Seven Year Old Daughter That There Was No Way She Was Getting A Dog For Chanukah, No Matter How Much She Asked. Anyway, Meet Waffle
Kids ALWAYS lay down the law. Welcome Waffle! May you always be loved.
He Was A Rescue. A Runt. Probably Blind, Deaf, Won't Make It Very Long, They Told Me. Well, Happy 10th Birthday, Buddy
I was told something similar about a 5 year old dog many years ago (I was told she had cancer and wouldn't make it). I adopted her anyway. She lived another 14 years with me.
Wow, happy birthday good boi! ❤ One of my babies was found on the street with her siblings, she was a fraction of her sisters' weight, she had massive hernias, and she could hardly walk because her back legs were broken/deformed (we never found out what). I cried about her for days, I was so scared she wouldn't make it. Now she's 3 years old, strong and in almost perfect health – only problem she has is that she'll probably develop arthritis at a relatively young age. Her hernias were fixed and although you can see that her one back leg is a tiny bit shorter than the other, she learned to walk just fine without ever needing surgery. She's my miracle girl ❤
Some people seem to have a misconception that being a runt necessarily means sickly, but that's not always the case. The problem with runts is that they sometimes aren't strong enough to compete with bigger siblings for their needs and so become sickly. Being a runt beyond that competition isn't generally a problem in and of itself.
Thank you SO much for taking such good care of him! I adopted a cat that was listed as "unadoptable" because she was a senior, had "possible cancer in her ear canal" and was so scared she self barbered and chewed her fur. I took her in anyway (after signing wavers) to my OWN vet and she is doing fine, has no cancer (just an ear polyp), her fur is growing back and she adores us. Always take an adopted pet to your own vet.
Sometimes living things bloom when they're given Hope as a fertilizer. Be amazed at what you can grow

We Just Adopted The Most Snuggly, Beautiful, Chonk Of A Cat. Welcome Home, Bill
“Bill, I love you so, I always will! ... I was on your side, Bill, when you were losin'. I'd never scheme or lie, Bill, there’s been no foolin'”! (Sorry for the ear worm.)
I Just Adopted Atticus This Weekend. He Was A Stray And They Told Me He's A Very Fearful Cat. I Slowly Introduced Him To My Closet With Some Food, A Bed I Warmed Up In The Dryer, And Some Pets When He Allowed. Just This Morning He Sat In My Lap And Purred
Our shelter did not give background stories on their pets, but our rescue kitty surely had a tough life before we took her in... She's been with us over a year and still runs and hides when she hears a loud noise (even when I sneeze!) or when anyone comes visit. So my daughter and I treasure the times when she shows her trust and affection to us. It took her months to stop hiding and sleep next to me and now she's feeling safe enough to even sleep WITHOUT me. While I miss her in my bed, I'm so glad she feels safe enough in out home to finally sleep alone in the middle of the living room.
Within 2 Seconds Of Meeting The Cat I Was Adopting, She Climbed Onto My Shoulders
My cat did this when we went to see if we would adopt him. He came home with us and never climbed onto my shoulders again. Guess he wanted to tell me I was his chosen kitty slave.
I was adopted by a mini-panther and her bond-sister, a tortie, this way. Went in to see about fostering, got adopted!

Dandy Had Part Of Her Face Shot Off (Before I Adopted Her). I Love Her Two Derpy Top Teeth
i wish people who hurt animals all the bad things in the world! may their pants always pinch, may their sleeves always slide down into the water while they do the dishes and may they always have tiny stones in their shoes! may their glasses always be dirty right after they tried to clean them. may they never feel happy again!
What you wish on them is magnitudes nicer than what I wish on them.
Load More Replies...True Fact: Every serial killer, ever, had a history as a youngster of abusing animals, whether it was bugs, cats, cows or birds. People who do this are seriously ill and it manifests when they are young. I've seen so many kids be abusive to a pet or wild animals and adults think it's a phase or "just mean he'll grow out of it" or think it's just the kid blowing off steam in some Kid Way. it's not. Never, ever think it's "nothing" if you know someone who did or does this. I wish the animals people/societies would make animal abuse a very public issue. I'm so glad this little guy found a wonderful Hooman.
Aileen Wornos didn’t hurt animals in her youth or at any time, she just killed 7 men. There are other serial killers who also have not harmed animals, they just went from either harming themselves to harming others or just straight to harming others and escalating the harm to killing, etc. Animal abusers should get criminal records, jail sentences and never allowed near animals again

Adopted A Void Yesterday. Shelter Said She Didn't Like Laps. It's Been An Hour. Send Snacks
I doubt a cat's behavior at a shelter very closely resembles how they'll behave in a forever home.
This. One of ours was described as a "cozy cat", supposedly a low energy lap cat. She turned into a little furry tornado at home, full of mischief.
Load More Replies...Last week, my cat sat on my lap for 5 hours. I missed dinner, but didn't really care. The people at the shelter said she'd never be a lap cat.
How sweet. Cats should never be judged by their behavior when stuffed into a small, weird-smelling cage, bright lights, and lots of scary noises. I wouldn't be on my best behavior either.

Jenny - My Parents’ New Rescue. Saved From A Life Of Being A Breeding Bitch. 5 Years Old, Doesn’t Know How To Play. Adopt, Dont Shop!
I have a breeding bitch that was shot in the head because the gang bangers didn't like her puppies. Luckily for her a wonderful police officer got her to a vet and she survived. Now she's my princess. Never found out what happened to the puppies.
Go ahead, hate on me, but hopefully Karma visited those gang bangers.

Nope not accessories. I took my kids as they are, same with my 4 legged kids. I actually have a purebred now from the pound, didn't know it. Had a boyfriend yrs ago who got me a pound purebred too. I actually prefer mutt as both of the purebred dogs had way more problems
Load More Replies...Beautiful puppy, she'll catch on. She hasn't had a chance to be loved yet and has to take it all in.
One of our dachshunds had been abandoned on the street. We suspect she was a breeding bitch from a backyard breeder that he dumped when she got too old and ill.
We adopted a German Shep/mix 6 years ago. Her name is Minnie (Minnie me) because her profile looks so much like our Golden Retriever, Sadie. Minnie lived on the street with a homeless guy and was 20 lbs with holes through her gums above her teeth. Her breath smelled like death and we could feel every bone in her body. It took me a total of 2 seconds to know that she was the “one” for our tribe. She knew absolutely nothing about playing, didn’t know how to jump up on the couch and every inside noise terrified her. She was prone to hiding so I would look for her every time she was missing, taker her sweet face in my hands and tell her; “Groot....family.” She still suffers from PTSD but is the MOST loving, appreciative pup ever. She’ll never play ball but she’s always ready for a hug and a kiss. Please....everyone, adopt!
After 3 Long Months Of Trying To Get Her Trust. This Cutie Has Finally Adopted Me!!

I had a feral over the summer, even took him to the vet when he had an abscess that got infected. He would come inside during the day and take naps, but was ready to go back out in the evening. Wow. I have two greyhounds. They are absolutely amazing. I'm sorry for your loss. I've lost two as well. It's heartbreaking
Load More Replies...All greyhounds are unique and not all have high prey drives. Mine moved into a house with three cats. No problems. What is universal is their love of couches and sleeping. So, please don't assume that all greyhounds want to run after anything fuzzy and moving. Having a high prey drive is one reason many hounds don't even get considered for adoption. When it's just not true.
Guess if that one gets off it's leash and starts running, it's game over

Dog's Reaction After Being Adopted
He is reacting to her crying. My Cooper did this. If I was crying, he would lick my tears. I had him for 7 years (older adoption), and it never mattered where I or we were. All it took was a sniffle and he would come running if he was not already at my feet. He was my therapist and my bodyguard. That pain is so different.
Yeah, I had one like that growing up. He was a stray at my Aunt's farm and they had all females. She talked my mom into taking him and he was so special to all of us kids, but for me he probably saved my life

Husband & I adopted a feral kitten a year ago. She is now a cuddle bug and my husband’s shadow. The work of taming ferals is SO worth it!
Doubt this was a feral, stray is more likely. A feral at that age would be almost impossible to socialize at that age.
Not impossible, but difficult. Also, serious illness can "speed" that process of socializing. Been there, done that. BUT, yeah, probably an abandoned pet originally. *sigh*

Every cat, and dog, deserves a home. But not every home deserves a cat or dog.
I think people that put human emotions on animals are really stupid. A cat is not a human, therefore he cannot be rude.

My Newly Adopted, 11 Year Old Daisee Enjoying... Life
Pitties have such a bad rep. They are wonderful pets. They fight because they are forced into fighting. The methods of "training" are horribly cruel.
It’s true. My aunt has 2 pit bulls one is super chill and extremely sweet she also has a extra sense where she knows if you are sick or hurt and will come lay by you. The other one is super hyper and would run around all day if you let him. Also if you give him a frisbee it’s gone in 5 seconds. (He’ll tear is to shreds). My aunts nephew (my cousin) and the dog have a connection. They are the most hyper bunch ever. They love to run around everywhere and they are so attached to each other. Sadly my cousins moved to Ohio a couple years back but everytime they visit it brings a smile to my face when they go chase each other around

My GF Is A Vet Nurse And Often Brings Home Strays Handed In. She Said "It's Only Until She's Big Enough To Give Away"...
Our most recent rescue, Tabby, was dumped in our yard this past May. She was about 5-6 weeks old, weighed barely 1 lb, and was left there all by herself. And had the loudest meow. We heard her the night before we adopted her, but couldn’t find her. Next day, she started howling again, and we located her hiding behind a thick bush next to the chimney. Terrified. She clung to me for the first week, on my shoulder, hiding in my hair, sleeping on my neck every night. After that, she started wanting to explore the house, the other cats, and the dog (all of whom were also interested in meeting her and playing). She’d still stick close, but was curious and becoming more independent. She’s eight months old now, and fearless, feisty, playful, and still very sweet. She gives you kisses on your face if you hold her close. She blended with our other four-legged kids right away, and they all love each other very much.
What an adorable floof! Big enough to give away... haha! Yeah, that'll happen! I had a kitten (product of a feral mother) that I said I'd take until we found her a home. Well, we found her one... ours! She was with us for about 14 years.

I know this is a cliche, but another cat may actually help. It won't replace your beloved, but taking care of and getting to know another pet can really help with the grieving process. I found this out after loosing my soul mate Waytha a few years ago. A couple stray pregnant ladies showed up on my porch a couple of months after loosing her, and caring for them and finding good homes for the kittens really took me out of the grief. We Adopted A Bonded Pair Of Kittens From A Rescue Two Days Ago. Three Months Old, Orange Girl, Gray Boy, Brother And Sister
Hello My Name Is Olive And I Am Here To Tell U All A Story. Earlier This Year, My Mama's 5 Month Old Kitten, Milo, Suddenly Died And She Was Heartbroken. Then, I Chose Her To Adopt Me So I Could Help Her Heart Feel Better And Carry On Milo's Legacy. As U Can See, I Am Very Good Girl. Mewmew. The End
I had a six month old kitten die too. She was being spayed, but we didn’t know she had an underlying heart condition and couldn’t take the anaesthesia. Broke my heart. That was almost 5 years ago now. Her name was Monkey, and she was a sweet little clown. I had been looking forward to watching her silly antics for the a good 20 years.
Adopted This Old Man A Week Ago. I Think He's Happy To Have A Home
Yes, he can finally take it easy in his golden years. You’re his hero.
I Guess We Have A 5th Cat Now
Yep. Looks like it. All four of our cats were rescues too. Just walked right into our hearts and took up permanent residence. We were chosen.
Seems to be the way we get cats. Except the one that had been dumped at a local park. He followed us through the whole loop. Our toddler was smitten. He disappeared when we were in the bathroom. Once we were home I couldn't stop thinking about him so I called the park. They had him in a cage and he was going to the animal shelter the next morning. I asked the ranger to wait and I'd pick him up. Blossom, our daughter named him, was such a great member of our family. He slept sprawled out on top of our daughter. He hung out with us in the yard, like a dog would, following us from project to project. He loved to run into piles of leaves bury himself then rush out to attack us. We were so lucky to have him.
This Is Max. I Adopted Him Yesterday. He Spent Nearly 4 Hours In My Lap This Morning Napping Off And On And Cried When I Tried To Put Him Down. So I Skipped Coffee Refills, Taking Advantage Of My Stand-Up Desk, And Bathroom Breaks. (Excuse The Robe. Mandatory Home Office Dress Code)
Max is beautiful, and so are you for sacrificing all movement for the day for him! ;-)
I'm thinking about getting a baby sling. My kitten is older, but she used to tuck up in my shirt and sleep while I wove. I think she misses it, I know I do...

How about Nyx (pronounced “nicks”), who is the Greek goddess of the night? It is said she was born of Chaos, which is perfect for a puppy, right? But she was also said to be of exceptional beauty, which this little one will clearly be even when she outgrows her chaotic puppyhood.
When You Adopt A Cat For Emotional Support But It Ends Up Liking Your Dog Way Better
Ehh, the entertainment value is emotional support enough. Every time I look at my cats and my dog, I always break out in a smile and feel better immediately.
That much happiness is bound to spill over into the entire household.

Adopted This Little Bean Today And This Is How She Fell Asleep In Her Box
She knows she’s finally home (you know it the first time they sleep very deeply and don’t startle awake at every sound or movement). They can finally relax like that when they finally feel safe, warm, secure, well fed, loved, and happy.
Just Adopted My New Best Bud Parker
And that’s now Parker’s chair. You’re allowed to sit there, but only if Parker can sit in your lap.
My So And I Found This Baby Abandoned. We Adopt Him (It's A Him) And We Are Looking For Name Sugestions! If You Have Any Ideas Please Let Us Know. Also If You Need More Photos Just Ask!
Think very carefully. Right now he’s a Yoda. But he’s going to fpgrow into those ears pretty quickly, so his name will need to grow with him. Plus, it needs to be something he’ll answer to. So you could make a list and try calling each name to him. Whichever name he answers to (by coming to you, looking over towards you at the sound, waking up, etc) is the name he’s chosen, all by himself.
After Apollo Creed? He doesn’t look like too much of a bruiser just yet! :-D
Load More Replies...His coloration may be a thing called fever coat. The mother cat was ill at some point during her pregnancy. Don't be surprised if he becomes a mostly black cat with your care.
Awww... My New Adopted Kitteh Shared His First Blep!
I Traveled 400 Miles To Adopt This Handsome Gentleman. His Name Is Gordon
Just Sharing My Cat. I Adopted Him As A Senior, And He’s The Greatest
Senior cats are so wonderful! Laid back, cuddly, mild playing, short duration zoomies, no tearing stuff up. Just being really zen with you.
My 18-year-old did not get that memo and is still a maniac. Could you fill her in and let her know she’s supposed to be mellowing out at this stage of her life?

I Adopted This Guy Yesterday From The Animal Shelter. I Think He Feeling At Home. Meet Monkey
I had a cat named Monkey! And she really was more monkey than cat sometimes.
Thank you to all the people who adopt, especially older animals. They deserve a warm and loving last years.
About a year ago, we adopted my rabbit, Misty. She's two years old now, and she's the best and most bizzare creature I could have asked for, and I know that we have many happy years together ahead of us. I legitimately remember the day she went to get spayed. I had school that day, and I couldn't stay in the vet's office anyways, so we were separated for awhile. I was so nervous and afraid for her. My friend remembers this too. I was crying a little at recess and I remember my friend coming to comfort me. When Mom picked me up later that day, I remember learning that Misty would come home to us a bit late because another animal had come in with a much more urgent case. When we finally got her back, Misty was groggy and in slight pain (you'd be too, if you had to get that kind of surgery) but was otherwise fine. She's now happy and healthy and just generally her normal, spunky self. I wouldn't trade her for anything.
A wonderful heartwarming end to 2020! Reminds me how many good and decent people are in this world!
Everyone here has done the best thing ever - given a senior or not-perfect (?) animal a forever home and love. Animal Lovers are the Best People Ever.
Rescues are the best! We adopted our boy in 2012. Has close to three years of behavior of food guarding, night terrors, abandonment issues and not a big fan of catch. His only owner dumped him at the shelter said she was going away for two weeks and didn’t want him. He was devastated. The shelter saved him and sent him to a rescue. We saw him and met him and went to get him! He is now happy, confident and a smuggler and still active at almost 9 years old! He is a joy! No more night terrors, just happy boy and grumpy at night!
Unless you adopt an older pet or one with disabilities, I'm not impressed. Animal babies get adopted in a blink. The others take weeks to months to adopt out. Choose the animals that need you. You won't regret it.
