Here at Bored Panda, we firmly believe that cuteness, animal pics, and education perfectly go hand-in-hand: there hasn’t been a better trio since Harry, Hermione, and Ron graced the halls of Hogwarts. So when it comes to Reddit, the ‘Awwducational’ subreddit is at the top of our list of favorites, dishing out wholesomeness and scientific facts left, right, and center.

The 3-million-strong subreddit that has been going strong since 2012 shares educational animal facts paired with truly soul-healing photos that will satisfy not just your heart but also your mind. We’ve got a lot of ‘awwducational’ photos for you to enjoy today, Pandas, so grab yourself a big mug of hot tea, snuggle under a blanket, and let’s get scrolling. Don’t forget to upvote your fave facts and pics!

Redditor u/AGreatWind, an incredibly friendly moderator who manages r/Awwducational at night and works as an infectious diseases researcher during the day, went in-depth with me about the community's rules about avoiding trivial animal facts and always adding in reputable sources with posts. The redditor, who has over 7 years of experience working on the subreddit, also opened up to Bored Panda about the fact that some of the mods are actual scientists which is very cool in itself.

Oh, and be sure to have a read through Bored Panda’s second interview with the always-friendly PDSA team who was more than happy to share some insights into animal behavior and body language. If you still haven’t hit your cuteness limit for the day with this list, we cordially invite you to scroll through our previous article about r/Awwducational right over here.

Some rescues have mom-substitute teddy bears for when it's naptime, they get wrapped onto a teddy bear - also super cute! And they give them pacifiers too!

Since r/Awwducational suggests avoiding sharing trivial animal facts with the community, I was curious to learn more about where the line between something trivial and, well, rarer lies, and whether it's all subjective. However, moderator u/AGreatWind told Bored Panda that things aren't quite as subjective as they might seem at first glance.

"This rule applies to posts that are a better fit for /r/Aww such as 'this cat and dog are friends' or 'tigers have beautiful stripes.' Those are facts, but they are trivial and a better fit for the pure cuteness subreddits. Such posts would be removed under the trivial fact rule," the mod explained.

"The rule is to cull very low effort posts rather than differentiate between common and lesser-known facts/posts. After modding here for 7+ years, a lot of animal facts begin to feel like common knowledge to me, but it would be unfair to remove posts solely on that basis! So the trivial post rule is limited to removing posts that are objectively trivial (Deer eat plants) rather than subjectively so."

I remember reading that he was told he was going to meet primate expert, Jane Goodall. The researchers showed Alex a National Geographic article about Goodall, complete with photos. When Alex met her, he asked, "Got a chimp?" First recorded case of an animal telling a joke! Never underestimate an animals intelligence.

Parrots are scarily intelligent. One I knew of used to imitate the owner's voice to call the dog and wake him up. When the dog would come sleepily into the kitchen, the parrot would laugh at it.

There is a Dog on TikTok named Bunny (@whataboutbunny) where her owner is trying to teach her to use buttons with prerecorded words to 'speak' - for example 'stranger noise' or 'love you mom'. Bunny had recently been learning use of pronouns and time phrases (tomorrow, afternoon, later etc). She often has conversations with her owner trying to figure out if she's an animal or human - bunny: 'I human. Mom human' owner: 'You animal' B: 'mom friend' it's cute. There was a point I was trying to make but I forgot what it was lol.

All the things that we humans thought made us human and animals couldn't do. Use of a tool used to be a big one. Even birds use tools. They say humans anthropomorphize animals. Apparently not. Koko even understood the concept of death as she actually grieved when she was told that Robin Williams had died. When they met they had a wonderful few hours together and she considered him a friend.

Meanwhile, u/AGreatWind also went into detail about the need to add sources to back up your awwducational animal facts. "Sources and Removals: Our removal trends go through waves of frequency. For the last several months I would say that we have not removed many posts for poorly cited sources," they shared with Bored Panda.

Post removals are more common on r/Awwducational than on most other subreddits because posting a fact the right way takes more effort. However, new users aren't penalized if they make a mistake: it's all part of the learning curve. "We understand that it takes more effort on the part of the users to post on this sub, so with new users, we try to err on the side of encouragement. If a new user makes a post with dubious sources we will try to provide a verifiable source along with a warning to be mindful of source material rather than a straight removal. Like a science classroom, we aim to be difficult but fair. It usually only takes one warning before new users grasp the format, which is always encouraging to us!"

I was also told by a dog behaviorist that dogs will also sneeze if they don't want to obey a command. My dog certainly does! If he doesn't want to come inside when I ask him to, he'll drop his head and sneeze, then go into a sort of play mode. Annoying, but cute!

Learning all about rare and elusive animal facts is all very well and good, but sometimes it’s good to have a refresher about the basics. That’s why I reached out to the PDSA, the UK’s leading vet charity, to have a chat with them about dogs. A whopping 33 percent of British households keep dogs as pets. That number is slightly higher (38.4 percent) in the US. Naturally, with so many dogs going on walkies all the time, it’s important to know a bit more about them as animals and when to know if we can approach and pet them. (They might look cute but they’re not always in the mood for a stranger to ruffle their fur and scratch their bellies!) PDSA Vet Anna Ewers Clark told Bored Panda that dogs often show early signs that they don’t feel comfortable.

These cute little guy animals are arthropods. They are in the same group as insects, myriapods, arachnids (including spiders, mites, and scorpions), and crustaceans.Their race has survived every extinction event the planet has had. They will no doubt survive the next one (including the current one). They have been around since before fish & dinosaurs. They are not annelids. It is the most extensively investigated terrestrial isopod species.) “Looking away, crouching down, creeping towards their owner, staring, nose licking, and even yawning are all key signs of stress and anxiety, meaning it’s probably best to leave them be,” vet Anna explained to Bored Panda what signs we should all look out for that indicate that it’s best to leave the pooch be instead of introducing yourself and snuggling it in the middle of the street.

“If you ignore these signs, the dog may have no choice but to progress to more obvious signals like growling, lifting their lip, snarling, or snapping,” she warned.

Anna also noted the opposite signs we should keep an eye for that indicate a dog most likely wants our attention and to play with us. “If you’re approaching a playful furry friend with a relaxed body and a wagging tail, they are much more likely to invite a good stroke and you might just end up with a friend for life!” You can find some more great tips on how to tell if a dog is happy right over here.

"Capybaras are autocoprophagous, meaning they eat their own feces as a source of bacterial gut flora to help digest the cellulose in the grass that forms their normal diet and extract the maximum protein and vitamins from them their food. They may also regurgitate food to masticate again, similar to cud-chewing by cattle." So unless you are into that sort of thing or have a private wetland, I wouldn't advise doing it. Sorry.

Small does not automatically mean weak. Just look at how a 10 lb cat can dominate a 110 lb dog. A couple well-placed and lightning fast swipes across a dog’s nose—-with their needle-sharp claws out—-always sends a very powerful “Do not f**k with me, dog” message.

According to PDSA Vet Anna, knowing how to read dog body language is vital if you have children with you because they might accidentally get hurt or make the dogs that you meet nervous.

“Dogs can find them [children] noisy and unpredictable, so it’s always safest to keep your kids away from dogs until you’ve spoken to the owner,” Anna cautioned. “You’ll also need to monitor the whole interaction from start to end to make sure the dog stays happy and relaxed. It’s also a good idea to teach your children about canine body language and how to safely interact with dogs, so they can keep themselves safe and know what to do if they’re approached by a dog when you’re not with them.”

Male elephant seals will perform an exaggerated "banana pose" in shallow water, because they're too hefty to do it on land. They'll swim out a little from their beach colonies, and do such an exaggerated backbend that their tails are almost touching the backs of their heads, and they croak and look very proud of themselves.

They're actually evolving to lose their tusks, against natural selection, because of what we're doing. Humans are literally reversing elephant evolution thanks to the selfish idiocy of members of our species. I'm ashamed of us.

If you love elephants, check out HERD (South Africa). They are raising a herd of orphan elephants including an albino (slightly pink) one, Khanyisa. Also Elephant Nature Park in Thailand is saving elephants that spent their lives working.

This was Mischief, a raven from the World Bird Sanctuary. He passed away this year at the age of 20. Here's a link to a clip of him talking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfsnHVaScjg The best part is when he refuses to say "Hello" and instead, keeps saying "Hi!"

Love those. Had one at home for necessary recovery from broken wing (after consulting with wildlife vet, raven made full recovery). He was awesome despite being wild, he knew when he needed help, he also knew when he was ready. Plenty of other reasons for which these are great.

Previously, my colleague spoke to two of r/Awwducational’s moderators, u/IchTanze and u/AGreatWind, about the community. Redditor u/IchTanze, a moderator-veteran with 6 years of experience now (5 at the time of the interview), told Bored Panda that the ‘aww’ part of the subreddit refers to how people react to baby animals, flowers, endangered species, and other subjectively cute things. “‘Aww is in the eye of the beholder,’ as we say.”

The moderators and the entire community want everyone who joins the online group to learn something new about the animal world. That’s why they insist on everyone backing up their facts with proper sources.

The California Ground And Rock Squirrels Have Acquired A Great Anti-Rattlesnake Defense

They chew on the old snake skins, then lick and apply the mush onto their fur to disguise their own odor, tricking the rattler into scenting only snake and thus avoid detection from its slithering predators

This laboratory study is posted online and the description here confused me a bit. Snake does not only smell the squirrel in direct contact, they have other senses, so in close proximity to snake this wouldn't work. However squirrel can mask their scent in environment making it more difficult for snake to detect where they walk or live in holes. This works for other natural enemies of squirrel which also prefer to avoid rattle snake. I would really like to know how these squirrels discovered it, but probably old snake skins left in their nest served the purpose at first.

I was saved by a squirrel once! I was hiking the Nevada trail in Yosemite and came upon a squirrel making the cutest little chirping sound and bouncing up and down. It was cute until I saw what had it's attention, a California rattlesnake slithering my way only 10-15ft away!

There Are Only 880 Mountain Gorillas Left...

Moderator edit: IUCN Red List has the mature population at 600 (last updated 2018). Wiki says 880. Others say it's around 1000. We are going to call this 'debated' since a current consensus is still being worked out apparently. The good news is that the population is trending up, so take that as solace that all is not lost and we can still make a difference!

Strangely, axolotls are the larval stage of a salamander that is not found in the wild. If they are given a particular hormone they will mature into an adult form (imago) that evolution seems to have discarded.

BTW, even though Tarzan movies (and that whole genre) like to show rhinos charging after people and chasing their vehicles, rhinos aren’t really all that nasty-tempered, unless of course they feel threatened (as anyone would be). Movies also like to depict hippos as being happy and good-natured, when hippos are actually the nasty-tempered divas of African rivers, whether they’re threatened or not. Rhinos get a bad rap while hippos are the real villains. Now, to be clear, I’m talking about wild rhinos and hippos, not zoo animals who are acclimated to human interaction.

However, the fires the birds start are probably small, and only serve to burn out the undergrowth trash in the forest. Whereas people are the most destructive firebugs—-whether directly causing them, or starting them through climate change—-and the culprits in many of the wildfires that have devastated the country.

My dog Scruffy sheds a puppy’s worth of hair when we let it grow long in the cold months and we brush him outside because of it (he’s part Pom and hates the heat, so we keep him in a puppy cut when it’s warm). I can’t tell you how many birds take the hair that comes off him. There are a load of birds’ nests in the surrounding trees that have a good amount of Scruffy hair in them to keep them and their babies warm.

In the documentary I saw (with Sir David Attenborough, of course!) the nest was about 25m/80ft off the ground - I was literally shouting "no, little duckies!" at the screen. They bounced when they hit the ground and scampered off, no harm done.

Imagine milking a cow and talking to her about the state of the world, then hearing a sad "moo" as if to say "it will never get better." And then you move on to another one, tell her the same thing, and hear a happy moo that says "Humans can be good; they will save their world." And a third one in the line just says "Hay is good."

Similarly, rats can also die of grief. I had a pair of brothers who had lived together all their lives, and when one of them passed away from cancer his brother, despite seeming completely healthy, died as well just a week or two later. He went off his food, didn't want to interact with me or any of the other rats, and spent most of his time just sitting there with his head turned away. And then one day he lay down and died. It was like he had decided he just didn't want to live any more.

Reptiles and amphibians are not pets (and especially for children!). They need a lot of specialized care, they get diseases people don't know about because they are uncommon in mammals, and they don't express themselves as clearly as some mammals. If you absolutely need a pet for a child, get a dog.

Oh come on! Bearded dragons are one of the few reptiles that actually make very rewarding pets. So long as the initial setup is good, they require much less attention than a dog or cat. Pets are really important for children's well-being (when it is possible), and not everyone has time for a dog.

The indigenous people of Scandinavia/northern Finland/Kola have some funny origin myths about lemmings. 1) They are the lice in the hair of the devil. Whenever the devil combs his hair, lemming fall onto the earth. 2) Deep inside the mountains, there is a mountain made entirely of crawling lemmings. It is the highest mountain and reaches up into the sky. Sometimes, strong wind carries the tip of the mountain with it and makes lemmings rain onto the land.

I didn't even know these were a real animal until I played trivial pursuit and there was a question that asked something like "what small animals are known to jump off cliffs". My hubby answered with lemmings and both myself and my brother looked at him like "seriously, lemmings". Well we were sure proven wrong and we don't live it down lol. Working memory is what you hold in your head for immediate action - if someone gives you a three-step direction and you can't remember the third step, or you go to the kitchen for something then can't recall what, those are times when your working memory wasn't up to the task.
