To find out more about bulldogs and the misconceptions and controversy about this dog breed, we spoke with Ryan Neil, the Blue Cross head of animal behavior services and Roisin Bolger, Blue Cross veterinary research, standards and communications lead.
Ryan explained that the common misconception about bulldogs that they’re aggressive dogs is false. “Early socialization is key. Helping puppies of any breed get used to the world around them in a positive way will help them in later life,” he explained.
Moreover, “like many breeds, their original purpose has changed over the years and bulldogs are now bred and kept as family pets.” Ryan assured that “they are not inherently violent or aggressive.”

When it comes to their behavior, the animal behavior expert at Blue Cross said that they are often larger than life in character and love to play and be active. “However, their enjoyment of play is often hampered by their physical characteristics, which sees them struggle to breathe or overheat,” he added.

When asked about why bulldogs (both British and French) are often viewed as controversial dog breeds, Roisin Bolger, the veterinary research expert, said that it has to do with poor breeding and their many health issues. “Dogs who have been bred to have a flat face are known as brachycephalic and will all struggle to breathe due to shortened and narrowed airways. They can quickly overheat and some even need surgery to their nostrils, palate and larynx to help them survive.”
Their health issues don’t end there. “They also have oversized heads, which means they struggle to give birth naturally and many need an emergency cesarean because puppies become stuck. The folds in their skin and position of their eyes also cause them problems and they can develop uncomfortable skin and eye conditions which can involve extensive medical treatment,” Roisin told Bored Panda.
She also added that “in the UK, British bulldogs are famously associated with Winston Churchill and a spirit of defiance and pride.”

It was around the 1600s when Bulldogs were officially mentioned for the first time, though it is thought that this type of dog was bred starting in the 1200s by mixing Pugs and Mastiffs. The prefix 'bull' is in the name to describe the dog's use in the 'sport' of bull-baiting, on which we won't elaborate due to its violent nature. When the Cruelty to Animals Act was passed in 1835, the Bulldogs lost their purpose and popularity. However, thanks to one Bill George, a dog dealer in Victorian London, Bulldogs gained popularity as pet dogs.

Due to their tenacity and impressive figure, Bulldogs are often used as mascots for various causes, organizations, and people. But, without a doubt, the most famous Bulldog was the one representing England (and, cheekily, Winston Churchill himself) defeating Nazi Germany. A Bulldog is also the mascot of the United States Marine Corps, and no less than thirty-nine American universities use one as theirs.

The American Kennel Club states that Bulldog temperament should be kind and courageous with a pacifist and dignified demeanor. The owners of these dogs, though, describe them more as lazy, stubborn, and goofy. Nevertheless, bold or sluggish, a Bulldog is a great family pet that can easily be kept in an apartment without requiring copious exercise. One other thing - Bulldogs are patient enough to get along with kids, often forming strong bonds with them.

Now, some fun facts:
- One Bulldog can produce around a quarter of a gallon of saliva per day. So carrying a towel at all times might be a great idea!
- No other dog breed can clear a room as fast as a Bulldog who farted. This breed is definitely a winner in the gassiest dogs contest. And though it might seem funny, the Bulldog's anatomy is to blame for this inconvenience - they have sensitive stomachs that make digesting food hard work.
- A Bulldog's wrinkles once had a real purpose - as a participant of blood sports, the wrinkles guarded these dogs against bites and blood getting into their eyes.
- A Bulldog named Otto has a Guinness World Record under his belt (or should I say wrinkles?). In 2015, he broke the record of "Longest Human Tunnel Traveled Through by a Skateboarding Dog," which he managed to do in around 19 seconds!

While I can appreciate the doggos cuteness, it's unforgivable what humans have done to the flat faced dog breeds.
Not just brachycephalic dogs, but almost all dogs. This is why I detest the AKC. They could have a huge impact if they would rewrite the breed standards to prevent this kind of thing. Look at poor King Charles Cavaliers...they have brains too big for their skulls now... or "Rhodesian" ridgebacks, where the healthy dogs are supposed to be culled. There are some breeders now trying to undo some of the damage, but it will take generations of effort.
Load More Replies...For once I could not enjoy puppy pictures because it is evident in almost every picture how much breeders have destroyed these dogs and hence their abilty to breathe and eat and often to walk.
We all agree despite cuteness we understand what suffering is behind this breeding. All of us together have ability to stop it. There are now also breeders who return to older healthier standards, or breeders focusing on working dogs standard instead of exterior only and so called primitive breeds which are less influenced by fashion overbreeding. And let's do not forget adopting is best option from all.
Nope, nope, NOPE! Half of these have already been bread so much they can't breathe properly and have all sorts of health issues, before dying a painful death at a young age. The other half are bred full well knowing that the mother cannot give birth, the pups respiratory tracts will not be healthy and they will likely be in pain a large percentage of their lives. This is not a good list and unless there are a few rescues among them all the dog owners in this list can go to hell!
We’ve adopted a rescue Frenchie who was being used in a puppy farm, she was kept in a cage for a few years and just used to breed from / profit from. She’s got all kinds of weird issues from her time being cooped up but she’s a lovely character and is awesome with children. Can’t say we’d have one if we couldn’t have had a rescue dog, they’ve got so many issues with their breathing and the likes, the kennel clubs ought to be ashamed of what they promote / have created. Her partner in crime here is a Staffie / Whippet cross plus sone other weird dog DNA and he’s indestructible, his mongrel genes will benefit him. Love the dogs, they have nothing to be ashamed of, hate the humans that breed such ridiculous animals.
What stereotype? That they're docile, lazy bums? I think people just wanted to show off their dog ;) This breed doesn't have a bad connotation, unless you count how humans treat them by breeding them into suffering.
My dad had an underbite and flattened nose due to genetics. He had breathing and dental issues and snored terribly. Not fun. In his 60s he had corrective surgery, which really improved the quality of his life.
We’re talking about bull dogs that came about through human actions and selective breeding. Some bad humans think that these dogs look cute and that’s all they care about. But, these massive health issues can be avoided by not buying these dogs and not breeding these dogs. Don’t make excuses for purposeful animal cruelty.
Load More Replies...Yeah, they look cute, but these dogs struggle to breathe, eat and walk.
Our dog Higgins is a "normal" dog, with a dog-appropriate snout and nose and legs and everything. He's 12 now and developed a condition called "larynx paralysis", which means exactly that: the larynx gets paralyzed and doesn't open correctly anymore. He's a bit doofus and a lot of fun, but he'd been making "snoring" noises during walks for about a year. Beginning of this year, he started to severely lose energy, only able to walk about 1 km and even that with a LOT of difficulty. There was just not enough air getting into his lungs and muscles. We went to a clinic and they sewed half of the closed larynx open, so now he gets about 75% of the original air-flow back and is a lot happier and fitter (we have to build up his fitness a bit). Imagine - these dogs START OUT that way. Dogs breathe predominantly through the nose - the mouth is for cooling. Most of these pics show dogs with way too narrow nostrils and snouts so short their tongue will not fit in it and dry out. (cont)
(part2) Dry noses - cracked noses! is also not a great sign of health. Did you know that if the tongue doesn't get moisturized properly, it dries up permanently and might have to be amputated (partly, of course)? Did you know that many of these dogs will get their first-ever real breath of oxygen when they're intubated for surgery? And when they wake up and it wasn't surgery to open-up the airways, they'll go back to not having air? How can anyone look at these poor little creatures, KNOW the problems and still buy them, pay breeders for them and laugh when they can't walk ("aw, lazy boy!") and have to sit very upright to even get air ("haha - like a huma") and find their snoring adorable? If you didn't know it before, okay. But if you read this, you know now and shame on you if your next dog will be one of these and it'S not a rescue! The only acceptable (English and French) bulldog is a Rescue-bully! Same goes for many brachycephalic breeds, but this is about bulldogs.

I’m so sorry. I’m not fan of french bulldogs and bulldogs. So not cute. Brachycephalic and problem of breathing flat faced dogs.

Simply no. I'm sorry because I think you're probably a nice person and don't mean harm, but sadly pics like these that push forward the narrative that those puppies are adorable and cute will encourage people to want them and buy them. It has not even much to do with respectable vs puppy-milll breeders, since even reputably breeders very often don't do enough or - worse - willfully ignore the health-issues. There's people saying "it's the cute snoring that makes me want to have a bulldog/pug", and they know it's because there's a problem with airflow but they still keep up the narrative that the dogs are just "lazy and chill". Some of those owners are breeders! Respectable ones, who probably love their dogs. And yet, they blind themselves to the fact that for all their life, these pups will only get breath through a straw. Of course they are chill! They can't do much else. The dogs are on the brink of suffocation and breeding them like this needs to stop. Buying them needs to stop!
