They are there for the benefit of the emergency services so they are aware if the vehicle is involved in a collision that there is a baby that should be attended to first.

For the same reason I got handicapped plates: people are assholes and will be aggressive to the point of injury unless they have a reason to think twice or back off. Instead of getting tailgated or run off the road avoiding careless drivers, I get honks from aggressive drivers. It's made a huge improvement in my health and well-being by not getting injured daily by what would be an inconvenience to someone not facing my physical issues. Some people need more delicacy on the road that should be offered to all, but often isn't. Signs remove the ignorance factor.

There have been times when I've been driving with small children in the back and an impatient driver behind has been driving with his bonnet right up my a**e. If I'd come to a dead stop s/he'd have rammed the back of my car, no question, and if they're in a four by four and I'm in a small cheap car, then my kids are in real danger (small children's heads are so much heavier in proportion to their bodyweight than with adults, and severe or fatal neck injuries much more likely). I've never had a Baby on Board poster because - yeuch - they're those things parents-to-be excitedly buy 'just because that's what you do', but there are times other people's driving does endanger small children specifically. Those arseholes wouldn't take any notice of a Baby on Board poster, probably make them drive even closer if they could, anyway, so there's no point.

The sign was/is supposed to be a warning for other drivers that due to a baby or child on board, the driver will be slower and more careful on the road. It's like a truck warning that they take wide turns. However, a lot of people don't know this so they just think it's a stupid sign and for some reason get pissed off at it...

I've always thought those stickers were some kind of self-congratulation thing. Like "look - we got a baby!" Nothing to do with the actual traffic laws.

How about people causing accident because they were distracted for reading these stupid things?

I always assumed it was just a cute bumper sticker type saying, like "Where's the beef?" and "My kid beat up your honor student".

I see it more as a warning for everyone other that the parents in the car might get distracted by their beloved Baby's cries and shove you off the street. Almost happened to me at a pedestrian crossing cause the mom searched for the pacifier. (And in Germany the cars have to watch out at the crossing for pedestrians.) I even could knock on her Window while she passed me. @_@

From my experience it is a sign that gives you the same rights as emergency vehicles. You can ignore speed limits, disregard traffic signs and, in general, act like traffic laws do not apply to you. Must be because the baby needs to be fed at the proper time.

I only found out as an adult, but the signs are there in case there’s an accident; the emergency services will see it and search for a baby/child!!

For emergency responders to see, so if there is an accident, they know to look for a baby. However, it is still a bit confusing because you may not always be riding with your child. :) Hope this helps.

Their purpose is to inform emergency personnel that there is a young child in the car in the event of a serious crash, so they will look for the child if no one else in the car Is conscious and unable to tell them.

I never understood until I started driving a car. Especially when you cross Germany and some compensated sad f*ck in his Audi or Tesla drives up to you with 230 km/h with flashing lights while you're overtaking a lorry... you just hope that a "baby on board" sticker makes him care a tiny bit more.

We used our when baby was still in a car seat which required the door to open all the way to get it in or out. The sticker went on that side so people knew to leave clearance for the door when parking
