Crochet pattern design can be a fulfilling and rewarding creative process. To create a pattern, there may be several stages to the process, such as brainstorming, sketching, testing, and refining.
Sarah has not only created many patterns herself but also published several crochet pattern books for people to use. She shared her creative process. “I typically have an idea and image in my head of what I want to create before I crochet it. I take a lot of inspiration from seasonal trends and popular holidays. Many times, I repurpose my older patterns into something new. For instance, a Crochet Gingerbread Man Gift Card Holder recently became a cute Crochet Bunny Pocket for Easter treats!”

If you want to create your very own original pattern, there are several tips and tricks to help you get started. “As soon as you learn the basic stitches like Single Crochet and Double Crochet, the possibilities are endless. You can create so much with just a few easy repetitions. A great example of easy pattern designing is what I did in my book 'Crochet Cute Critters.' Most of the patterns start with the same basic shape. A dog, bunny, cat, and bear all start from the same exact pattern, but with a few different embellishments, a new animal comes to life!” wrote Sarah.

Some of the most popular crochet projects are blankets or amigurumi or crocheted stuffed animals or dolls. Probably rightfully so. Blankets are not only practical and functional, but they are also an excellent way to express your creativity, while amigurumi are adorable and oddball characters that can be made in a variety of sizes and shapes, making them a fun and rewarding project to work on.
Sarah shared that these two are her favorites as well. “My favorite projects to make are animal amigurumi and corner-to-corner crochet blankets. The animals I create are truly uncomplicated, and they are so cute and cuddly, and make the perfect gifts for any occasion. They bring smiles to everyone who sees them. I love being able to share these patterns and help support other makers who are selling their finished crochet pieces at craft fairs and through their own online stores.”

There are countless benefits to crocheting already, and having an instant community of friendship among yarn crafters is icing on the cake!”

YouTube is a fantastic visual and audial learning source. Some are better than others in terms of speed. I found a promising one titled "How to Crochet | VERY SLOW DEMONSTRATION" by Kristin's Crochet Tutorials. The beauty of video tutorials is you can pause and replay them as many times as you like.

I just finished a sweater dress for my wife, now I'm working on a Halloween afghan.
As a crocheter myself I apprieciate this post and love all of the projects.
A coworker gave me a starter crochet/knitting kit for my birthday last month. I want to learn how to do both. I've arm crocheted scarves before. Not sure if that's going to translate over to using needles but I'm excited to start learning.
I learnt to sew and knit at my mother's knee but never learnt crochet. My daughter taught me in my middle age. I haven't done any for a while but I like it better than knitting for portability, and how easy it is to create fun things. Some really lovely and fun work in this list. 👍🤗 Bravo everyone.
