The social issues caused by this are yet to be fully studied, but, for example, researchers believe that increased Instagram use among teens creates a higher risk of depression, anxiety and low-self esteem.
So we’ve gathered some of the worst examples of netizens excessively modifying images of themselves to appear more attractive. However, not everyone is exactly successful at it. As easy as it is to laugh at some of the examples here, the truth is that most of these folks feel some shame in their own bodies and want to compensate for it with technology. This is generally due to a lack of funds as, let’s face it, folks with income will simply get actual plastic surgery.
After all, these days most things can be changed pretty thoroughly. Take buccal fat removal. If you have seen a famous Hollywood star or pop singer with a weirdly thin and angular face, this is likely because they had the fat in their cheeks removed.

This issue tends to impact women more than men. A Dove sponsored study found that not only do young women spend more time on social media, roughly half of the teens they interviewed indicated that this activity directly impacts their mental health. Even worse, almost 90% said that consuming, for example, Instagram content makes them feel less beautiful.

This thread and the comments in it are absolutely vile. Now don't get me wrong, I am pretty far from being one of these sensitive, emotionally driven types (nothing wrong with those who are of course, it's just not my thing) but as a bio/adoptive/foster father this doesn't sit too well with me. Rather than bullying people, singling them out to be laughed at and insulted by the mob, then putting them on the internet for all eternity for their friends, families, employers, their future children to see just how stupid we think they are because they're different than us, why aren't we asking ourselves "what have we done to these people to so completely destroy their self worth and ability to love themselves for who they are, too the point they feel posting images like this is the only way we'll accept them, only way they'll be worth anything"?
