50 Of The Most Horrific Things Mother Nature Produced That People Caught On Camera (New Pics)
There are arguably as many beautiful creatures in the world as there are creepy ones. But since they’re not as pleasant to look at, the latter might not appear on your news feed as often as puppies or kittens do.
Well, today we want to shed light on the underdogs, the eyesores, the fascinating yet at the same time disgusting creations of Mother Nature. If you think you’re brave enough to see them, scroll down to find an entire list of some of the most bizarre-looking creatures out there. But if you are squeamish about spiders, weird aquatic beings, and reptiles, among other similar things, you might want to check out some dog memes instead.
Here at Bored Panda we were curious to learn more about all sorts of weird-looking beings, so we got in touch with the evolutionary biologist and Professor at the Department of Biology at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Robert Montgomerie, who was kind enough to answer a few of our questions. If you’re curious, too, scroll down to see what the professor had to say about them.

Dead Man's Fingers Fungus. So Excited To Have Spotted This On A Recent Trail Hike (Location: Ontario, Canada)
Seem to remember reading somewhere, I don't know if it's this specific species, but it looks like dead fingers, and tends to grow on dead things....
Load More Replies...Stinkhorns at a certain point in their development tend to get a response too, but definitely a different one!
In Polish, the stinkhorns are named "shameful disgrace" :D

Tupelo Trees In A Dried-Up Swamp. Really Pretty But Kind Of Creepy (George L. Smith State Park)
I bet you could grow anything in that dirt. Tomatoes, potatoes, corn, mutant aliens....
This species of tree will not survive unless the swamp returns because they need wet soil in moving water.
Aplysia Vaccaria Is A Species Of Slug Native To California And Mexico That Can Grow Up To 1 Meter In Length And Weigh 30 Pounds
I'm considering making a bucket list purely to have picking up one of these as my only item.
Idk if you *could* pick it up. I think it'd slide out of your hands every time you tried.
Load More Replies...Lovely mix of metric and imperial. Just waiting for them to adopt the giant slug in place of the metre. LOL
Metric uses pound as well, as in half a kilo. But giant slug would work too
Load More Replies...Found one of these in a tidal pool, not having known of their existence. Blended really well, so the discovery was "I think there's something there- I think it's a living creature- ohmygosh those are antennae- it's a giant snail with no shell!- ima touch it!- that's it, ima pick it up!- nooo it won't let me pick it up!"
could you imagine if they moved like puppies? 3 am zoomies would end up with me hide in the bathroom trying to keep it from squishing under the door
If you’re reading this, it means that you already saw at least a few bizarre-looking beings. (Feeling alright so far?) And if you’re wondering why in the world they look the way that they do, you’re not alone; we were curious, too, so we got in touch with Prof. Robert Montgomerie, hoping to get an answer.
The professor explained that in general, the ‘appearance’ of plants and animals is shaped by natural and sexual selection, as well as simple genetic drift. “These various influences are always constrained to some extent by an organism's past history and selection can only work with the variation that is available to it.”
Euphorbia Balsamifera Emerging From The Underworld
Found In My Dad’s Shower In Puerto Vallarta
Looks to be a whip scorpion maybe? so cool! might be a bit Scary to see inside but these guys are actually pretty harmless, they don't sting or bite!
Look mate, I understand. But if I ever see something like that, only one of us is coming out of that house alive. And it's gonna be me.
Load More Replies...We were also wondering if the arguably weirder-looking beings usually live in more isolated areas—deeper in the ocean, for instance, or somewhere in a remote location in the jungle—as it doesn’t seem that people stumble upon something this awe-inspiring too often.
“To me there are lots of weird-looking plants and animals in my own backyard. I expect that we think that things look weird if we do not see them often, or ever. I thought that a lot of birds and mammals in Australia looked weird before I actually went there for several months; I expect that Australians did not find them to be weird-looking at all,” Dr. Montgomerie shared.

Ugh, it reminds of that disturbing scene with the hair in the drain in the Japanese horror film, Ringu.
You see the wee dots at the end of every 'hair'? I think this is some kind of fungus.
When you use hair growth products, always thoroughly rinse down any extra so it doesn't stay in your drain trap. /j
Welp, I’m Gonna Die. Do I Call The Army Or What?
It's one of those joke stickers. You can put them under a lamp shade too to freak people out. Not very nice if they have a phobia, but otherwise quite funny. :)
It appears to have changed position. I don't think stickers do that...
Load More Replies...Get up there, unscrew lamp, dump friend outside. I actually want a proper look at it first.
It is, and it's venomous. It's got to be a prank because they only grow to 3/4 of that size.
Load More Replies...I'm hoping that's a sticker to prank with and not an actual bug that used it's claws to unscrew the lamp just to be nice and cozy inside. If it's not moving, definitely a prank.
The professor is probably right saying that certain species don’t look odd at all, when you familiarize yourself with them. But the thing is, there seems to be quite a few creatures we might not know that well, or at all, for that matter.
Take the beauty found in northern Oregon, US, for instance: just a couple of weeks ago, on June 3rd, 2024, some passersby on the beach stumbled upon a ginormous 7.3-foot-long creature washed ashore. What was first considered an ocean sunfish, or Mola mola, was later found to be a newly discovered species, known as the Mola tecta or the hoodwinker sunfish.
The New York Post reports that with the help of photographs, measurements, and tissue samples, it was researcher Marianne Nyegaard who identified the marine animal. She also suggested that it may be the largest specimen of the kind ever sampled.

Garter snakes are fun to play with! Use to catch them as a kid. Now I rather not but it's more for the fact that I don't want to hurt them or disrupt their lives tbh! But they are harmless little critters! Plus they help keep other pests under control!
Yeah, I root for them when I see one around my property. "Go eat bugs little guy!"
Load More Replies...Had horses at one time, and found a bunch of garters overwintering in my hay bales. I left them there, they disappeared in the spring. They're cute!
"Why don't you come and join the group? It's better than being a party poop."
Awww, I love little garter snakes. They're completely harmless and catch some of the annoying "pesky insects".
The Narcisse Snake Den is the winter home of the red-sided garter snake and is 6km or 3.7 miles North of Narcisse, Manitoba, Canada.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Load More Replies...Ah, good. I needed a new reason to lie awake in terror every night.
I love spiders, but NO. I have my boundaries. I sleep with earplugs in for other reasons, but this is a side benefit.
That doesn't seem too bad. I had a honeybee crawl in my ear once (I worked as a beekeeper for a few years). That's a feeling I wouldn't want to wish on anyone.
I've had a spider in my ear, it was horrible. I cannot even imagine having a bee in my ear!
Load More Replies...Been there done that in the middle of the night years ago. It woke me op and I thought I would go crazy. I thought it was a big and was getting ready to wake my husband up to take me to the ER when I thought s bug would be attracted to light and heat, grabbed a flashlight. Thought I was gonna break my teeth and almost screamed when that damn thing came crawling out. Put peroxide in after that!
Just a few days after the hoodwinker sunfish was found in Oregon, the news about another discovery regarding a different kind of unusual creature broke – remains of a fossil of the smallest known great ape were found in Germany, dating to roughly 11m years ago.
Known as Buronius manfredschmidi, the ape was estimated to have weighed just 10kg and was likely the size of a human toddler, which makes it far smaller than other hominids. According to Prof. Madelaine Böhme, a palaeontologist at the University of Tübingen leading the research, it’s unclear why the species was as small as it was, The Guardian reports. But one version is that its size allowed it to occupy a different ecological niche from its larger counterparts, while another suggests that the Buronius manfredschmidi simply represents a more ancestral version of great apes.

Woke Up To See This In My Kitchen, I Live In The Middle Of The Mountains Like 500 Km From The Nearest Beach
My wife screamed as if she saw a ghost at 5 AM in the morning, turns out she went to get some water and saw this huge crab crawling in the kitchen. It's just insane.
There are terrestrial crabs, usually in mountains and usually living near streams. I think they can be found in the West Indies, Japan, and no doubt other places around the world. Not, thank god, in my country.
It looks like one I saw in Jamaica. I was frightened of it and the natives were laughing at me.
Load More Replies...Honestly, I would way way way rather have a crab than a huge a*s spider walk into my house. Or even a small spider lol
Why were you downvoted 😭 The others too :*)
Load More Replies...I get upset when a large cricket gets in my house and leaves me wondering for hours "HOW?" I can't imagine finding a massive crab.
A Swarm Of Honeybees Looking For A New Home Decided That My Mother's Jeans Looked Comfortable. We Contacted A Local Beekeeper, And He Just Came By And Shook Them Into His Box
I've seen videos of a beekeeper removing bees and scooping them into a container with her bare hands. I find this interesting and horrifying.
They are quite calm while swarming. Their young queen is in there somewhere and needs to be kept secure. They'll don't fight.
Load More Replies...You think maybe the bees saw the pictures on the close pins and thought it was an advertisement for a bee rest stop?
Great eye, I didn't notice them until I read your comment.
Load More Replies...So happy to read that OP didn't kill the bees. We need those little buggers! Without them, we'll all die!
beekeepers are so incredible, i saw a guy on youtube once who was so incredibly chill with bees, he would just locate the queen and take her carefully in his hand and the rest of the swarm would just follow him
Discussing other odd-looking creatures, Prof. Montgomerie shared that the ones he thought looked rather weird when he saw them for the first time were the anglerfish (Linophryne arborifera), shoebills (Balaeniceps rex—a bird), glass frogs, goblin sharks, and naked mole rats. “I expect that they would no longer seem weird if I studied them for a while,” he added.

well, seems like these comments clearly need someone who doesn't dislike spiders! look at how cute! what a proud momma rancho! also w the size of the egg structure this person knew they'd have babies, which is why she's probably in that container, much too small for a normal rancho habitat! so cute!
I agree, I don't understand why everyone feels the need to express their hate for spiders on here :( Spiders are good and they kill pests. You don't have to like them but at least respect what they do.
Load More Replies...You put that right in the work fridge and no one will steal your lunch again.
I’m all for exotic pets like spiders, what with my love for rats… just don’t be my neighbor. Please.
how many are gonna survive ? Guess you neither have the room for raising hundreds of spiders nor you can release them.
While some of Mother Nature’s creations are clearly more visually appealing than others, they are the way that they are for a reason, and they’re arguably all necessary in the animal kingdom.
We discussed the importance of every being—no matter how adorable or creepy-looking—with Dr. Montgomerie, who pointed out that it is a rather philosophical question that might depend on who’s answering it and how one defines what is important.
“From a biodiversity perspective, every species is important both for maintaining the ‘natural’ order and for the possible, as yet unknown, benefits to mankind,” he pointed out. “If your only interests are in human welfare, there are probably lots of species that contribute nothing to most people. Again, that’s a philosophical point of view as I feel that my own well-being is aligned with the preservation of all species and is diminished every time one of them goes extinct. I expect that that is far from the majority view. I agree with Thoreau who said 160 years ago ‘in wildness is the preservation of the world’.”

Saw A Ton Of Vultures On A House Today. I'm Not Sure What This Implies. Google Says Either A Gas Leak Or A Body
It looks like the welfare commite is already there. Or at least some sort of commitie is
Load More Replies...So, fun fact about vultures. New World (American) and Old World (Asia, Europe, Africa) vultures are unrelated. It's a process called convergent evolution, where two separate species evolve the same features. This means vultures are so important and valuable that nature made them twice.
Anytime we see them it means there's a dead animal in the woods. I appreciate them doing their job so the smell doesn't linger.
There might be a dead animal under the house. I looked up the gas leak thing. Apparently, the chemical added to natural gas (so you can detect a gas leak ) smells similar to the odor of decaying flesh.
Not necessarily. Have a friend who leaves out roadkill for buzzards. The roads get cleaned and the vultures get a free meal....
I think a group of vultures is called a committee, actually.
Load More Replies...Call police and ask for well check.... they will either find a body or detect the leak....

Yikes... hopefully he can get that infestation under control. Spiders are welcome, but if it can kill me I'd rather it stay out of the house. They almost look like sea spiders...
Now. I don’t hate spiders. In fact, I think a lot of them are really cute. But the only appropriate response to this is “EEEEAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUGGHHHHHHHH”
Well s**t, I was getting ready to go to bed early. Now I think I'll stay up all night cleaning.
This Evil-Looking Mushroom Thing In My Yard
Stinkhorn fungus. Very common along the east coast of Australia in the warm months when it's wet.
Evil? It's actually quite beautiful, although it might smell a bit evil. Aseroe rubra, aka red starfish, anemone stinkhorn, and sea anemone that's common in southeastern Australia.
looks like of of the pods from "Invasion of The Body Snatchers" kind of - I hope this one is smaller. Just watched it, oh right, because Donald Sutherland died :'(
These Folks Having A Rave On My Porch
those look like what my grandma called granddaddy longlegs. harmless
Load More Replies...I saw a documentary the other day where millions of them were nesting on a tree, using their legs to protect them from heat & wind (dehydration) it looked like the tree had hair/fur until someone scraped it with a twig. It was pretty amazing! STOP trying to kill everything because you find it undesirable! Remember somewhere, someone thinks you're undesirable too!!!
Just watched the stick video on youtube. Very interesting, however I'm super itchy now.

A Wild Tokay Gecko Eating Someone's Pet Tarantula
do not mess with Tokay Geckos! They are humungous but dumb, and will attack. If that doesn't work, they splat to the ground and sprint around. Speaking from experience
We had one get loose in a pet store that I worked in. You had to be careful moving bags of dog food from the top shelf because it like to lay up there near the incandescent lights to pick up some heat. We had more than one employee get chomped lol
Load More Replies...That's an expensive meal... poor spider. But, impressive Tokay! Just doing what's in its nature. Definitely double down on securing the tarantula enclosures!
oh, that's so sad! I would be heartbroken if that happened to one of my pets. poor baby
There's no chance of that happening. Tokay geckos are fast, and the spider's a goner anyway. Tarantulas don't survive if the exoskeleton on their body is cracked or broken.
Load More Replies...incredible!! I own both as pets (not together of course), this is a crazy picture
Love Tokays but I've only met about 3 over the years and I'm talking captive bred that had a pleasant personality and liked being handled. Plus they CHOMP and hold on.... My grandad used to call them bulldog lizards.
Load More Replies...Tokay geckos are very loud, not terribly friendly, and have a ferocious bite which they're not afraid to use.
Load More Replies...Just because an insect or arachnid might look scary that doesn’t mean they should be killed. Usually insects and arachnids are more scared of us than we are them. A lot of insects and arachnids also play an important part in the ecosystem by eating pests or pollinating flowers.

Is this that cordicepts fungus that takes over insects muscles and makes them climb trees while thier still alive?
These are Pterodictya reticularis, and their tails are normal. The tails are a waxy substance which will break off when a predator attempts to grab them, not unlike how a gecko will shed its tail to escape.
Load More Replies...ooh, gorgeous plant hoppers! fun fact about the "tails" they are like a gecko's tail and can regrow!
Kinda yes, kinda no. A gecko's tail is a living part of the animal, whereas these are waxy and more equivalent to hair.

In California we called these Potato bugs (same insect) Always thought they were kind of gross looking. I didn't see them too often.

A Giant Swarm Of Maggots Eating A Dear Carcass On The Nature Trail Behind My House
Nature's cleaning crew. They're slow (and disgusting) but thorough.
That is an impressive amount of maggots. If those are black soldier fly larvae then good for the environment. this is what they do - eat dead meat and such. Harmless to humans. I used to raise compost worms. Some of the folks also raised these because they are awesome at consuming protein the worms don't like as well.
My concern would be what the maggots will transform into in a few days. Flies, I guess. I mean, thanks for cleaning up the carcass, but please move on when you're done!
Inside A Common Starling's Mouth
What concerns me is the angle of the eyes. I would have thought that from this perspective, they’d be a little further back up the head… now I feel bad for insects that this is the last face they see.
It's a fish-eye lense, so it's actually distorting the image. So wouldn't want to be an insect looking at that, though!

Crocodiles are frightened of herons. You do not want to be picked in the eye by a beak like that.
this type of heron is an a*****e, they think just because they're five feet tall they don't have anything to worry about. we had one eating goldfish out of our pond once and i ran at it waving my arms and yelling and it just stood there and stared at me, and then had the nerve to take a single step towards me.

Spider In Our Pantry
looks to be a huntsman! these guys aren't dangerous to adults, and are generally non-aggressive. they hunt prey rather than making webs, which means they appear in and around homes a lot. they might seem scary but are just helping out, like all other spiders!
Points for OP taking a pic of this instead of sprinting out the window...
Ok I'm nearing the bottom of the list and it has to be said. If it bites then it's not harmless and no one outside of Australia describes Huntsman as cute /s 😉

The smaller spider looks like a widow to me. At first, I thought it was a black widow, but it has more of a brown color, and I don't recognize the red stripe. Plus, its web is in an exposed location above a window on the outside of our house. What is it?
The bigger one (the victim, I think) is curled up, not moving, and partially wrapped in webbing. I thought it might be a tarantula, but I'm not sure. It has really fuzzy legs and body.
I see a story here ! Redback is creating a nice home for her future family. Life is good and sweet when suddenly a Big Bad Tarentula tries to eat the eggsack ! Redback has no choice and kill the bad guy, saving hundreds of baby Redbacks to overcome the house forever and ever. The End
It’s a red back spider, part of the widow family. I’m familiar with them in Australia, but according to Google, they’re found worldwide.
looks like a brown widow... both are poisonous of course. She's got food for a week there.
This Creature Is Growing In My Backyard
That Is Wild
It's possible it hitched a ride in someone''s stuff, and stayed indoors where it was warm. The little ones aren't too bad, if you don't have a problem with bee stings, this is pretty much the same effect. We had them in Georgia (the US state, not the country). They lived in our partially-completed house, in the insulation. Our upper floor hadn't had the ceiling put in yet, just the insulation in the rafters with clear plastic stapled over it. They'd find little holes in the plastic and drop through.... you wanted to check your bed before you went to sleep..... ;-)
Arizona, USA here. Our smaller ones are more dangerous here, yellowish/brownish/orangish (bark scorpion), can end a small child if they don't get the anti-venom. The larger ones, I've been told, feel like you are being jabbed with a large pin, and they strike repeatedly until the threat is removed. And they are unpredictable, they can be in your shoes or drop on your bed. They can climb walls and bedcovers. Putting bed legs in glass jars can keep you more protected. Not afraid of rattlers or spiders but scorpions.....sheesh, not a fan.

I mean, it's cool to watch - as long as you don't want fresh air in your bedroom.
Yeah, I would be watching and documenting the progress!
Load More Replies...Oh dear God no. Those are not wasps. Those are bald-faced hornets. Much bigger than regular wasps. They are mean, aggressive, and they remember faces!! And they will swarm, and can and WILL sting MULTIPLE times, if they feel threatened!! I'm not a fan of killing innocent creatures. But these things are dangerous-and only minor pollinators at best. They basically exist just to be àssholes, and are definitely a threat to your family. Especially if you have kids. Call an exterminator NOW!!
This Picture My Mom Sent Me Of A Spider In Her House
That's a situation in which I wouldn't know what to do. I wouldn't want to kill it, but I wouldn't want it in my house. But I'd also be terrified to try to trap it, because if I accidentally touched it, those spiderlings would scatter and just go EVERYWHERE. No, I think it would be best if I just moved out and gave the spiders the house...
This Spider I Found In My Basement Cellar. According To Google, This Is Caused By A Type Of Fungus Called Cordyceps That Ends The Lives Of Bugs. I Am Considering Burning My House Down

Hawk vs. Starling: No Contest
I have a cool picture of a hawk casually eating another bird while sitting on the fence of our parking lot at work. Amazing birds!
Starling/bird thing: huh? You still wanna go bro? Fight me like a real bird! Hawk: *sighs*
Hawk: "Seriously? I land for barely a few seconds, and step in a bird? What are the odds..."
Starling: "I'll grant you three wishes if you let me go." Hawk: "My first wish is for dinner."
A Bee With Pollen Mites
Found While Fishing At A Local Lake. I Poked It With My Fishing Rod, And The Top Was Kind Of Hard. The Part Under The Water Was Softer, And My Rod Went Through It Pretty Easily
If pushed over, it pops right back up. There were lots of them, but this was the biggest I saw.

I love most creepy crawlies. But I despise ticks. Not sorry to see them eliminated. Hope the dogs are doing okay. Definitely invest in some flea/tick medicine if your dogs are regularly going out into nature. They will still pick them up, but the ticks won't latch. They sense the meds, say f*** this, and fall off.
Spider Babies Outside Our Window
I Found This On The Trail In Northern India. Thought It Was Cool
I think it might be a species of hummingbird moth. I see them in my garden in Nova Scotia.
looks like a bee with a long tongue for going into deep flowers for pollen
I have some in my garden, they gather nectar from my red valerian, they fly like hummingbirds
I believe that is either a hawk moth or hummingbird moth. They're fascinating little critters.
Usually the proboscis of is curled up under the chin, but this one may have died while at a flower, causing it to stay stuck out.
In Germany we have these insects, too. Thei 're called Wollschweber.

What Is This Thing?
A caterpillar. Or something that came out of the Ghibli studios. If it starts talking to you, you'll know 😉
That’s the back end of a caterpillar, and that’s just a pattern on its rump that looks like eyes.
It looks similar to a grub in hollow knight, but instead of green it's yellow.

What On Earth Is This
It's a house centipede. As creepy (and fast moving) as they can be, if your house was the ocean, these guys are Great White Sharks; Efficient predators that will make dinner out of any other insect in your house (bed bugs, termites, roaches, spiders, ants, etc).
Load More Replies...We get these in our house. Other than being scary looking as hell, we simply let them devour the other insects that we don't want.

Found Dead Flies Making A Circle Near My Window. I Don't Use Traps, Bug Sprays, Or Anything Similar. What Could Be Causing This?
From what I know about nature the next step that will happen is more flies will form a star inside the circle before an incantation will summon the Lord of Darkness...
Probably caused by the photographer first finding flies, and then putting them round in a circle for fun.
What Might This Be? Is It A Fishing Lure? It's Huge (South Florida)
The "Hair" Under This Rock Is Actually A Mass Of Spiders
Memories of camping. me - young boy - and friend, running trails and exploring. Found a small, low ceiling cave. Felt something weird on the ceiling. Shine the light up and there are thousands of grand daddy longleg spiders covering the ceiling of the cave. Um, we left. LOL. I knew enough not to be afraid of them but we still didn't want hundreds of them crawling on us. Still, we were only I think 7 or 8 so it was an exciting find.
There Is A Wasp That Lays Its Eggs Under The Skin Of A Specific Caterpillar. When The Eggs Hatch, The Larvae Eat The Caterpillar Alive
Have you guys ever seen a tarantula hawk before? It looks like a giant wasp but wiki says it's a spider wasp. A spider that flies and has a stinger!! They sting a tarantula and paralyze it so they can take it back to their nest and lay an egg in it. Once that egg hatches it feeds on the spider while it's still alive. They are all over the desert by Las Vegas.
