“That’s It, I’m Craft Shaming!”:30 Horrendous DIY Projects That Got Shamed In This Online Group
Crafting can be a great hobby: making something with your hands is a great source of pride for many people. The arts and crafts market is a testament to how popular DIY hobbies are. In 2021, online sales for art and craft supplies, for example, were over $15.7 billion.
Sadly, not all crafting ideas result in something stunning every single time. As a casual knitter, I admit I have made some atrocious socks and even gifted them to friends for Christmas. My only hope is that they never shared them on the "That's It, I'm Craft Shaming!" Facebook group. And if they did, well... let's look for them here!

Get rid of the pans over the door and I'm good. Don't want a cast iron pan falling on your noggin.
I have a cast iron chicken frying pan that belonged to my mom - it may have even been her mom's. It has a crack in the bottom and can't be repaired... I would absolutely do this.
Before we headed off to grad school, my parents gave us a cast iron frying pan that they received as a wedding present and it was used then. Still have the pan so it is at least 75 years old. And, how do you crack a cast iron pan?
Load More Replies...This is beautiful, and the person attempting to shame has no taste.
If I could afford it I'd have this much cast iron for sure.
Load More Replies...We use peg board and hang our skillets and such. Especially since most of them are cast iron. People been doing this for hundred of years... No shame at all.
I really love light, so I avoid dark curtains, but I kind of like it, looks like stained glass
I was just going to say the same! The colors are lovely. Plus, it'd be easy to change them out seasonally. ❣
Load More Replies...I actually like that! I wouldn’t have it for myself but it’s very colorful.
this takes a long time to make, and honestly i like this one. its not a traditional curtains, but what the hell, it works, it lookss cool,a nd not everyone have it
I really like it! I would combine it with very thin see through white curtains.
OK shame away, I spent a lot of hours making my wedding bouquet, I have to say I was rather proud of my efforts, what do you think?.
I agree with you. Not hideous at all, and she can keep it forever.
Load More Replies...If I've learned one thing in my quest to find new hobbies as an adult, it's that practice makes you better. I, too, have once looked at a craft tutorial and thought: "Pfft, I can do that. Flawlessly. On the first try." But that's just one of my toxic traits, I guess. You have to try and fail many times before actually making something beautiful.
Having a hobby in the crafts realm also has benefits to our mental health. Research shows that it can help us manage stress better. When we do crafts or art in a group, it also makes us feel more connected to society.
1) Choose a cute pair of earrings 2) take all the skin off your knuckles
I clicked on this article because of the thumbnail and now that I'm seeing this entry I realize that the thing people are making fun of is not the earrings, but the earring rack. I was like "What's wrong with the earrings? They aren't all my taste, but to each their own", then I saw that the DIY is the earring holder and yeah, it's not great (accidental pun)
During Covid lockdowns I saw something online about sending a family friend a “hug”. It was made out of card like a mini strip of paper with hands cut out the ends and it was a bit basic.
I decided I can sew (kinda!) and I can upscale this to make a “hug” out of fabric that was based on my own hands and arm span for hug length.
Gave it to my parents. Think I also gave them nightmares
Thankfully not as creepy looking as a wallmaster or floormaster
Load More Replies...This is from about 7 years ago. A friend got me the kit as a fun pick-me-up, and I unintentionally made horrors with it
It looks like something u would see in the movie pet cemetery
Before this rendition, I don't think anyone has captured the true essence of a hair ball !! Good job !
"But how can I feel zen when everything I try to craft turns out trash?" you may ask. Well, that has to do with us always reaching for perfection. Your first (or second, or tenth, or hundredth, for that matter) craft doesn't have to be perfect. In other words, it's more about the journey than the result, if you will.
In fact, in some cases, making bad crafts might even be more therapeutic. Sam Reece, the mind behind S****y Craft Club, can attest to that. The community she started is all about gluing beads and rhinestones onto everything and anything. Reece calls it "low-budget, high-impact crafts."
I wish I would have known about this before I got rid of most of our stuffed animals.
I would absolutely panic and have to cut them out to they don't suffocate. And not just when I was a child but even now, as a fully grown person. It is so distressing to see.
This is what I can do with 4 massive plastic totes of beanie babies, think I could furnish the whole house, mattresses included. I was a child when this fever took hold on ppl like it was the next gold rush. If nothing else, I have a a ton of amazing memories touring every Mcdonalds in 100 miles to make sure we got the entire happy meal collection. It was an innocent time.
I was pretty excited about this awful chicken I made. I tried the Poppy the chicken pattern. My husband calls it Poopy the chicken, Poppy's uglier cousin
I have just spent 5 breathless minutes crying with laughter at this...poor beakless dollop!
Possibly because it looks like a bu++hole with eyes?
Load More Replies...Some call Sam's crafting club "lightly unhinged," but she says it's a way for her to explore her relationship with perfectionism and do her best to make art enjoyable again. To those who attend the club meetings, perhaps, it's something similar as well.
Sam started Craft Club in 2019 when she was feeling "creatively burnt out" by her everyday job. She started organizing club meetings in Brooklyn, and when the pandemic hit, it went, in her own words, "modestly viral" on TikTok.
I volunteer at a thrift shop and I kept this doll head and some cords from a damaged gift bag and made this abomination.
My mom hates it.
I have one my little sister made for me, it has piercings. It's goth Barbie
With a goth vibe it would actually have its own je ne sais quoi
Load More Replies...I absolutely LOATH Barbie and anything to do with the doll. My family would ask what I wanted for my birthday or Christmas and I would ask for transformers, Legos, cars, etc. They always bought me a Barbie saying "You're a girl, girls play with Barbie, this is what you get and you're gonna like it" THIS I actually like
Pretty sure it's not a Barbie, so there's that, lol. The eyes are giving me Bratz vibes.
Load More Replies...It's something other than ugly and quite wrong on many levels, but l keep going back to look at it. You'll Never lose anything attached to it... it will find its way back fo you somehow for sure. Fascinating.
'Used a broken Smart TV to replace the glass top of my patio set.'
I'd have serious reservations about it's resilience and the dangers from the components if it breaks. TVs are generally very fragile because they are not supposed to be subjected to any forces. Put a cup down firmly on this and you could have glass shards everywhere.
We used a brown one as a room divider to keep the dogs out of the back door 3 years lol My daughter saw it and bought us gates.
This one made me cry with laughter especially the comment about BatMeth
Reece claims bad crafts help her heal her inner child. "With every [crappy] craft I make, Kid Sam is right there—reminding me to play, to make art that's just for me, and at the very least, to just create something. Because when we're dealing with [crappy] crafts, it's not important that it's perfect—it's important that you made it."
Back away from the needles, honey
Ok,not great. But somebody took time to try something new. Congrats for the effort
I think they took whatever yarn was left from other projects. Why else those colors?
Everyone takes a start somewhere. Keep going and learning and lets see what you've got in a year.
i laughed way too hard at this, the googly eyes of surprise,.... i think its a real rabbit skin (going by the ears)
Made from 100% inbred (in bread) rabbit. I'll see myself out...
Hey. I make cat butt coasters. Yes, people buy them. Yes, people use them. These things are ridiculously popular, as there are MANY different patterns out there for them - I've never made them felted, mind you... just... the normal crochet'd ones...
I used to have a coworker who constantly tried to sell these butt coasters. I didn't start off hating them but now I sure do. She would even try to sell them to patients!! Like, girl, no! Stop selling homemade s**t in the workplace, and obviously don't do it to patients!
Is anyone else getting Gayle from Bob's Burgers (side note: Just now, I couldn't remember the character's name and then I remembered it and felt like an idiot because my mom has the same name, spelled differently) vibes? The episode with the animal paintings "Art Crawl"
But what about the times we intend to make something good and it ends up looking horrible? Well, sometimes, you just gotta accept that you'll make some duds. Blogger Felicia of The Craft Session writes that sometimes projects just fail. She asks her readers to look for joy in their failed projects.
Well that's the stuff of nightmares. If a kid made it, my apologies. Good effort kid... still going to bury in the backyard
Yes, but there are still way too many zeros in the price.
Load More Replies...She's not ugly; she's just not finished. Add another layer, different medium. Keep building
WHY?
They’ll be nomming on the tinsel the minute your back is turned
Load More Replies...The concept is OK - it's the colours that don't work. There's too much red, and the red doesn't work with the white net. Use this as a proof of concept and redo it with colours that complement the existing ones in the room and it could be a really fun alternative to curtains, especially in a light breeze.
It looks a bit c**p because it's on the rubbish white net curtain - if it were on an Indian print fabric or similar, it could look very effective. Hand wash only I guess...
well 🤔 it's good in an artsy kind of way I guess. Would have matched up the ribbons instead of tying them on randomly though.
I love this curtain idea AND the boho dreamcatchers on either side!!!! They're gorgeous!
This woman is asking $160 for her "creations" since she uses seashells and semi-precious stones.
I feel like this could be done by a 7 years old. Mind you, she did social studies in Uni, but failed to impress her teachers so she decided to devote her self to her "passion", painting.
Well I suppose there's a limit to how much damage she can do in society with painting, so there's that
Not sure if this was meant sarcastic, but I can at least think of one rejected painter who'd not only damage society but dragged the world into the World War II.
Load More Replies...Yay Zoe!! You get a gold star sticker next to your name!! And this pretty blue ribbon from Dollar Tree.
Plot twist, her name is Zoey but she put the first letters so big she ran out of room for the Y lol
Load More Replies...Felicia writes how she makes a conscious decision to feel joy about being wrong. "This is not a reframing where we are trying to make a pile of elephant dung be a cookie. But rather, it is a cookie that, upon first glance, can look like elephant dung." Failure teaches us something, she says.
$80 dollars... and you can see what looks like hot glue all over it.
Underselling yourself.
What in the fuck lol
I think we may be overselling the audacity.
My sister and I have been making our own headdresses to wear in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras - I may have to do this next year
$80? Like... wait... that's... dollars. Not... Pesos... not... Rupies.... Rand... Uhm... No.
Who pays 80 bucks for that IF they would like it? It's not nearly worth that much. "Undercutting myself", my a*s.
This is actually kind of cute. Sloppy but cute and not $80 worth. But it might be fun for a nurse or teacher 😉
Have you seen the pictures of spiders web while on d***s ?
Load More Replies...That is interesting. Did the spiders go in rehab afterwards?
Load More Replies...Will catch all the dreams if they would just gather in this ONE area of the catcher.....
Add a realistic looking spider, you can say she's still making it, and it signifies patience and fortitude and following through.
Oh, this my favorite. Imagine the possibilities. Pumps, wedges, flip flops. She's got something special here.
NO NOPE NO 🫢no one ever just thought I need to cut the legs off a doll, with shoes, and make earrings out of them 🤯
She also touches upon an interesting subject: that we take failure way too personally. When we fail at something, even at crocheting a granny square, for example, we think this says something about us as a person. That we're not capable enough, that we're too dumb, or that we just don't have the talent. In reality, mistakes are opportunities to grow.
Oh... how... HOW... did this person split and rejoin all those? That's... quite impressive, actually.
Add the right clasps, and this could easily be a pair of bracelets seen at a punk or metal show. Not bad.
Absolutely, the painting is actually rather good, if you can see past that. But I can't...
Load More Replies...I don't know how your comment is not number one and at the top of this list. Lol
Load More Replies...Sounds more like Menstruella would be Cruella's sister.

OMG, that's true! Can we invest £12 for his next one, too?
Load More Replies...Because she has a name. But for the £45 million EXTRA they want from our taxes this year, you can have them and call her Princess Buttercup, for all we care.
Load More Replies...Craft blogger Cintia of My Poppet also writes that we sometimes tend to be harsher on ourselves than we need to be. She invites crafters to ask themselves: "Is this really a fail?"
"Just because you don’t love it doesn’t mean someone else won't," she says.
"Meat Ball" earrings or what?
I have a craving for spaghetti and the need to use the toilet all of a sudden.
Those look like the earrings at local gift shops that have chunks of moose dung
Guys I think it’s a rock earring, based for traditional clothes I think? (I mean I’ve seen PEOPEL with long earring like that in India soo I’m guessing)
These are fantastic and beautifully made. They do not belong on this list.
I am downvoting because it doesn't belong here at all. I think it's pretty creative... though they need to tidy up the laces.
Same. I've downvoted a few that don't belong here. It's counterintuitive though, so I'm betting others are upvoting because they like it.
Load More Replies...There is no shame in these. The lines are clean and beautiful, and the stitching looks perfectly sound. They're not my taste in style, I would choose something different for my own fairy shoes, but I still see the beauty in them.
Downgrade to remove from the list. These are amazing and don't belong here.
I’m not sure this even counts as a craft. You can buy what looks like the exact same thing on temu/etsy/ebay etc
I was about to say this, I have a pair I got off Wish.
Load More Replies...From a more practical perspective, there can be lots of reasons your DIY craft failed. Some projects (especially when you're a beginner) need a lot of attention to detail. Sometimes, we might overlook instructions, swap the listed supplies for something we have at home, or just be in too much of a rush. Slow but steady wins the race, y'all.
Apart from the shoddy work and ugly materials, I imagine this is actually rather useless.
Thanks for clarifying the abbreviation. It suddenly makes a lot more sense
Load More Replies...Most tier tray levels go from large to smaller, and are usually the same relative shape. They also don't have sides that high as it can make it difficult to add & remove items. Using plates, flat(er) serving pieces, or any relatively shallow items tends to work better. Also, the higher the sides of a level, the further apart it should be from the level above.
Dollar tree. A common store in the US..even though now it's really the 1.25 and up store😄

These are not finished. It's metal clay, after firing it's solid silver. So yeah they look dodgy now, especially as an etsy listing, but they'll end up silver.
Thank you! Yes, this is a "before" photo showing the metal clay in its raw state before being placed into a kiln, where the organic binders burn away and leaves beautiful metal behind.
Load More Replies...So, which craft fails did you like the most, Pandas? Have you ever made something so atrocious it was worth shaming online? If you're brave enough, come forward and show us your bad crafts! Perhaps I should share my pathetic attempt at making paper bag snowflakes with you? But maybe let's leave that for the next time.
I'd really love to be this bored... but I hope I'd find something a bit better to do with my time
A shrek incense holder??
I was just looking for some nice inspiration
It's Fiona's feet. Don't ask where the rest of her is.

Can I do this with my rotten appendix? So sad I didn't keep my placenta...
These aren't handmade. They're called Fugglers. I have two; a rabbit and a bat.
Fugglers are lovely! This isn't one of them though.
Load More Replies...Nah. Use decayed rotted teeth. Then you can add the sense of smell to it.
I think you can buy these. can't remember the name of them though. mass produced toy. the teeth are plastic ones.
imma P**S the COUCH RTF now omg howling / gasping lmfao here WOW hahahaha whoever originated this post =my spriit beastie
OMG. what ... the... "Sweeeeeet dreeeeams Chillldreeeeen!!!" Good grief.
This is actually a real brand… not with human teeth, of course. They’re called Fugglers, look them up, they’re terrifying!
I want to say "oh lord, save us all" but in this situation, I feel like there's some sort of double negative....
From Tulsa, OK
It'd be a great indie album cover. Hell, it vaguely reminds me of Jack Staubers micropop
I've heard of this somewhere else - they took a bite out of it - it's a real chicken nugget coated with wax.
Decorative light, perfect for your kids rooms apparently
Can't tell if this is genius or hideous
Originally $65?!? I’m tired of people posting stuff they like, I absolutely hate these wings!!! Looks like they put costume wings through the dryer
I’m still wondering ‘the fairy wing’s what?’
Load More Replies...I take my first "unsee" back. I want to use it on this. UNSEE! UNSEEEEEE!!!!!!
If this was professionally framed with a wide matt and gallery frames, it could work. If it is a series of paintings, then you are on your way to your own show.
These are all off the Facebook page I’m in 😂 but without the link to the market place ad etc
... I am actually kind of impressed by this. The amount of dedication...

I’m from Alberta and I needed to get away from these so much I moved to the UK
Load More Replies...Stop it……."professional" cake maker
"Orders status are booking up fast" first of all uh, wut?? Lol second of all I seriously doubt it.
35 dollars? Is that the current crowd funding amount the maker needs for proper drawing lessons?
Nice colours, somebody will like them, but those ends need sticking down
There are kits to make bottles into lamps with no drilling. These would make nice lamps for a beach house. (After those ends get glued down.)
Load More Replies...My mother gave me something similar for Xmas one year saying "Oh I thought of you cause you like creative things". I offered to give her a box of tampons for Xmas because she used to have a period once and they might be useful still if she got a runny nose. No, I don't like my mother at all.
I've seen worse for sale, by named brands. These are cute. I would trip on them, but that's just me.
We used to do that on the cheer team when I was in high school. You start with cheap rubber flip flops from Target or Old Navy in your school color. Then get strips of fabric or ribbons in your school colors, and tie them one after the other on the straps. Voila, instant comfy, school pride shoes for after the game or on pep rally day. We didn’t do the strips so long that they got everywhere like the ones pictured, though.

I won this in a raffle
Removed the glued on butterfly lights before I sat down
It's awesome!!! Would have loved seeing the butterfly lights on it!
There ain't gone be no sequel. This here is inbred evil. Everybody must.... Lol
I don’t know exactly how to describe my thoughts on this.. I guess if it was good art, it would be acceptable, but as decoration for sale ?
Grungy sunflower concept ??
I thought it was a salad with meatballs and crisps. I probably ought to have breakfast...
I thought it was loaves of dark bread, with crisps and salad, lol.
Load More Replies...looks like bread or cake discovered as sunflowers. I am naiv enough to take a bite
I honestly don't get people like this. Do people who draw "portraits" like this and then claim themselves as artists really have that much confidence? Do are they just completely lacking in self-awareness? This looks like something my son would have done in elementary school. Seriously, he did a better self portrait in first grade. I get that the person tried their best, and if so, they have a right to be proud of their own work, sure. But to claim they're an artist, and try to charge $35 for something like this? That's just either blatant audacity, or complete obliviousness. I also get that art is subjective. And I respect a side hustle. But there's a line people. Come on.
Maybe that's what the person looks like. Portraits don't have to be complimentary
I dunno what it’s supposed to be??
Looks like heavy rain in the middle with light showers on the outskirts.
That was my first thought... put a weather channel logo on the other side and say it's Doppler radar....
Load More Replies...Imagine the rain hitting them. Then again, I wonder what shape they’d be in after a hailstorm.
Load More Replies...Okay, I can't lie, as someone who married a drummer, and who also loves things like wind chimes, I actually really like this one. But dàmn, cymbals are expensive. Can't imagine having so many that I could just leave a whole slew of them out in the weather like that!
What even is this supposed to be?
They remind me of lupins, one of my favourite flowers, I really like this. It's quite pretty.
Fox seen in a marked in Egypt
Make me think of Gena Rowland's role in "Hope Floats." She made "scaredy cats" using stuffed and mounted cats. Hope-Float...14c730.jpg

My own hotel for buggs.
Not only it looks horriffic, instead of usefull buggs , cockroaches settled and now I have a problem on my freckin balcony
They said they didn't know what to add. A match? What a mess.
It would have been very popular in 1989... but would still be cute for a kid's room
And that's exactly what it's worth
Is that corn? Because if it is, those leaves can be really sharp. Not a good idea
Doily curtain... "Rough draft", everything is pinned, just needs sewn together...
Spotted on the crochet group im in on the tedooo app
The doilies need to be starched, it looks like knickers on the washing line at the moment
Awesome! I made halter tops out of random doilies before. Cool for curtain!
I mean, they're hideous, but if you DID love them, probably wouldn't be hard to make with some crocs and a few old pairs of jeans.
While they’re not technically DIY, they certainly look like they could be. This is like the $185 paperclip by Prada, or the $2000 Balenciaga IKEA bag - at some level they’re just taking the p**s.
I made this for my mum out of salt dough…. I present you with Lionel Richie
Hello ! Is it me you're looking for ? I can see it in your eyes, I can see it in your smile, I'm not what you wanted...

I'd like to add a bit of context. I go to a center for people experiencing mental health difficulties and the craft today was meant to be a toucan. But I didn't really like the toucan look so part way I pivoted to biblical angel and made this monstrosity.
I'm usually a pretty decent crafter but these activities are often meant to be quick and cheap so I tend to just let go and not care how nice it is and try to have fun.
I'm still 100% open to any and all jokes about how terrible this is. Do your worst!
Pretty neat interpretation either as abstract toucan or very colorful watcher.
That's awesome. Designing your own patterns is an excellent skill and talent, especially if you're able to work on executing the idea while still working the pattern out. It might look slightly messy with how the facial features are done, but that improves with practice; the rest of the pattern is spot on. This doesn't belong here.
I would want this for testing designs. Would be nice to also have the rest of the head and chest for testing necklace length and hair accessories. Tempted.
Load More Replies...good idea, ridiculous cost when you can just get a tape measure or mannequin head for free
