“We All Had To Tell Each Other When We Were Showering”: Woman Quits Her ‘Big 4’ Job After Insane Working Conditions, Shares Her Traumatizing Experience In A Viral Video

There are varying degrees of dystopian corporate toxicity. Some companies try to pretend that you’re all one big happy family and try to distract you from real issues with free coffee and ping-pong tables. On the other end of the spectrum, you have workplaces that completely eradicate any sense of personal boundaries, forcing you to live for your job and sacrifice sleep.

Neither of these situations is healthy. And it can be hard to recognize when things are getting out of hand. But then you realize that you’ve got team meetings at 2 am to keep tabs on you and check if you’re still awake. And you think about the fact that you’re forced to check in with your colleagues about basic things like when you’re taking a shower. At that point, it might be time to think about a career change.

Popular TikTok content creator Devin Raimo, @devinraimo, spilled the tea about just how horrible working at her former corporate job really was. She explained how there were constant check-ins to see that people weren’t sleeping, and how the company would bother you even on your days off… like your sister’s wedding that you warned them about in advance!

Scroll down to see what Devin shared with the internet, and let us know what you think about it, dear Pandas. Do you have any stories about working insane hours? Share your experiences in the comments. Bored Panda has reached out to Devin’s PR representatives at the Oz Lane Agency, and we’ll update the article once we hear back from them.

At the time of writing, Devin’s video had over 2.5 million views and nearly 227k likes. Meanwhile, her follow-up video about her former job got nearly 856k views and 33k likes. Overall, the TikToker has 117.5k followers and has amassed a jaw-dropping 8.4 million likes over all of her videos. Some TikTokers mentioned that Devin probably used to work at one of the ‘Big 4’ companies.

This is what people colloquially call the four largest accounting firms in the United States, and they are Deloitte, Ernst & Young (EY), PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), and Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG).

Devin’s video really got the TikTok community talking because many folks have had to deal with unfair working hours and incredibly invasive corporate systems at some point in their lives. Staying 15 minutes late to finish off a few work emails or eating instant noodles in front of your computer both seem tame in comparison to what Devin had to go through. But it’s always easier to give someone else the advice that we know we should be following as well.

It’s quite easy to recognize when someone else has issues with their work/life balance. It’s hella hard to see the same issues affecting our daily lives. What’s even more difficult is finding the courage to set firm boundaries and to say a firm ‘NO!’ when you’re forced to sacrifice your physical and mental health for someone else’s bottom line.

There are two factors to consider in situations like this. The first is financial. If you’re promised a solid wage and large bonuses for your trouble, it might be tough to resist working long hours. You might have a family to take care of. You might be saving up for a house or a wedding. Or you might consider that you’re only burning the candle at both ends for a few years, and then you’ll have enough money saved up to take it easy.

The other issue to keep in mind is social pressure. If your coworkers, managers, and bosses all work insanely long hours, it’s hard to resist doing the same. We’re social animals after all. We want to be respected and admired by our peers. Going against the group isn’t something that many people are comfortable with. Especially if we realize that if we begin going against the grain, we might need to find another employer.

However, as we’ve covered here on Bored Panda earlier, the fact of the matter is that each and every single one of us is responsible for communicating—and then enforcing—our boundaries when it comes to work. Nobody else is going to do it for us. It’s up to us to vocalize when enough is enough, and then act accordingly.

If there’s a massive issue at your company, you should consider meeting with your manager, boss, or HR (or, well, all of them) and address the current situation. Be friendly. Be diplomatic. But be firm. Present some possible solutions to the problem and focus on constructive criticism. That is, if you think that there’s still a possible future for you at the company.

Something that you have to be really open and honest with yourself about is whether you’d be willing to stick around at your company if the toxicity was solved. If it’s a ‘yes,’ then you’re investing your time and energy into trying to shift the work culture in a positive direction. However, if it’s a ‘no,’ then your resources might better be spent looking for a new job. Don’t feel like you’re ‘stuck’ at the job because of the pandemic or the global economic situation: there are always alternatives. And your life and dignity are worth more than asking for someone’s permission to shower at night.

I don't mind it if it's sort of in the same style as the other bored panda posts. But sometimes there are posts that make no sense being here. I think I saw one the other day about how to do something and I'm like... this isn't a how-to or recipe site, why is this here? Also, while I like that there is usually a written summary of what is going on in the video (I'm at work so I can't listen or watch), sometimes the poster also adds a novel themselves. I'll never understand the little paragraphs of information in between images or with video posts. Just put a title and a short description before the images and the video with a summary. I don't need the stuff in between. I didn't need to know that Devin's video had x amount of views or why she got into tik tok. It's not a dating service or job interview.

As I said to an ex-client who sent me emails at 11pm, then call to check if I have received it and then again at 8am the next day to ask if it was done: "accounting is not an emergency service, if it's urgent is because YOU left it until the last minute!"

Yeah, okay.

It's the modern version of "um" or "ah". If you take any broadcasting education, you take lessons in weeding it out of your speech patterns, but it usually takes a class of students mocking each other's broadcasts to eliminate it completely.

Seems like an extremely disorganised company with very poor management. Also: in which country would this treatment of employees be legal and employees would believe such mismanagement is normal? Believing working until 10pm is not too bad...terrible brainwashing.

I often send emails at 2 am because I have insomnia and a quiet house at 2 am. I have never once assumed that the message would be read before 8 am much less responded to before the end of day unless it was an unforeseeable disaster. Then I'd call at the start of a typical business day.

Only in the US is working until 10 pm considered "not that bad" -- Americans are brainwashed from birth with that old Puritan work ethic. If you aren't working there's something wrong with you. Life is about work. I'm glad to see most of the younger generation isn't falling for that c**p. Elders create phrases like "quiet quitting" to try to make "working the actual hours you get paid to work" sound like a bad thing. My biggest regret from my working years is all the hours I gave them beyond what I was paid for. I was salaried so working 70 hour weeks gave me no more money (in fact my "functional" hourly rate went down). It also didn't contribute more to my Social Security. All it did was let who I was working for take advantage of that Puritan work ethic.

This story reeks of BS. First, I'd kill a coworker I'd they used "like" twice in every sentence. Second, swatting a coworker because they are unreachable at 2am? Do you seriously expect me to believe that stupid BS? Third, literally no one would put up with working like that, not even the upper management. People... Just try using logic every now and then. This story is completely fabricated. And if you believe this story then I know a guy that is actually a Nigerian prince and he needs your money so he can escape Nigeria so he can get to the 43 trillion dollars he has in an offshore account.

This kind of pressure to complete work is nothing new. Been out of the Big 4 (ye old Big 8 , back in the day) many, many years ago. Just one example: I was working late at a bank. Heck, I do not remember the time, but the janitor finished work turned off the lights on me. Being an “devoted” second year assistant, I moved to a desk where I could use the street light to finish my work …. oh, around midnight … to return 7 AM the next day (we’ll, the same day). And, I traveled 50% of the time to wonderful location such as Kodiak, Alaska and Walla Walla, Washington. What wonderful years! Did that kind of hard work give me a high paying, comfortable position later? Not even close!

So grateful for the company I work for and my supervisors (manager and the CIO)… I logged in at 7:15 am, decided not to take a lunch and when I told my boss that I was logging off at 3:30, because no lunch, he said, “I don’t need to know your life in detail. You’re good.” I’ve taken 2 hour lunches, taken my mother in law to a doctors appointment that took 4 hours… and as long as I get some stuff done… they’re good with it all. SO GRATEFUL!!!

Whatever happened to 9 to 5 jobs? I was a Librarian, don't recall how many hours per week we worked, but we adjusted our working time to the opening hours of the library, i.e. Mondays we opened at 2pm till 6, and half the staff were on in the morning, all staff in the afternoon. Tuesday open all day 10 till 6. Wed 10 till 1.00. Thurs 2 till 7.30. Fri 10 till 5.30, and Sat 10 till 1.00. Staff hours were worked out accordingly. We had a roster for taking time off.

We all realize this is a gross exaggeration of what likely occurred right? This behavior isn’t acceptable and anyone fired for not doing what is asked has an easy lawsuit lol. Why do we just allow people to act like this and say these things without fact checking them? If a company actually did that, expose them because it’s inhumane and unacceptable. In not doing so you remove the entire point of the story, make yourself look idiotic for somehow thinking that’s normal (again I don’t believe that at all you “didn’t know” this wasn’t the normal) and essentially make it a story no one can validate. Wack

I was working in retail at one of those "all-in-one super centers" (not Walmart), in the apparel department. Our manager, a woman, was a real hard-nose work til you drop kind of lady. So come winter, it snowed. I lived at a very high altitude compared to where the store, or anything else was, for that matter. So down below there was not even an inch of snow, but where I was there was two and a half feet. So I called in, and my manager is like 'Come on. You've got to be kidding me', Like she thought I was lying. So she said she was going to drive up to get me herself. So I'm thinking of being stuck with her all night, because she had a little compact front-wheel drive, and our neighbor had chains on and got stuck. I knew she and her car would most likely get stuck for hours, as all of the towing services were busy up on the passes. I told her this and she "huffed", and hung up on me. She never showed.

She is welcome to work for a hospital. Cause day worked after a night HR might consider to be another day so no need to pay extra for staying. But you can't say no. Cause if you do you will be mandated regardless of your personal life plans. She should try to be awake at work for 48 hours straight than she would know what the misery it is. This is why there is so much dementia is happening. It has nothing to do with people living longer. Anxiety, depression and obesity. Money not gonna buy you health. I would do a desk job like an accountanting 8-5 in a heart beat then go to gym and sleep at exact time.

"My final straw was on my birthday. It was on a Sunday this past April. And I said months ahead of time that it was my sister's wedding." Wait, I'm confused. Did she lie and say she was going to her sister's wedding so she could get her birthday off? I mean either way it was wrong of them to call her on her day off, but why couldn't she just say it was her birthday?

I'd have to know SO much more to make a judgement. After hearing the most ridiculous complaints of employees, it's hard to jump on any bandwagon dissing any employer. I hear so many young people that sound like spoiled teenagers that didn't realize working wasn't necessarily FUN! That they'd have to WORK! I think "big girl" panties are called for.

My husband was in corporate America for years. He sometimes worked for companies whose headquarters were in India, etc. Their business hours are during our American middle of the night, and my husband would get bombarded with texts and emails. My guess is that the OP worked for a company headquartered in an opposite time frame as hers. It's not pleasant, but it does happen.

I didn't watch the videos because I don't want TicToc. I'm not inclined to believe all of this however. Even if all these employees are in different countries, and unless you have specific shifts to work, (like a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shifts) this doesn't make sense. So who's sending out these msgs, who's running these meetings at 2am? So who's doing the follow-thru at 2:15 am to make sure everyone is working and not going back to bed? Something doesn't add up. If this is an accounting or finance company, who else in the world is up at 2am to communicated with? Unless you're strictly a bean counter and have no communication with the outside world whatsoever. I'm still skeptical.

I know a lot of people who work insane hours during tax season often 7 days a week for months including late nights HOWEVER they are treated amazingly the rest of the year, all overtime is compensated with extra time off during down season. And I know that these people's families know expecting them to be available for anything from January 30th to April 15th is unrealistic. I actually doubt the full truth here. No one can be expected to work 20 hours a day for weeks on end. Literally that would induce insanity...I mean Literally! Sleep deprivation like that will make people temporarily insane and unable to work and often suicidal. I ball BS.

Wack

I'm sure OSHA would love to hear from those employees. No job is worth that!

I like how someone can even get a job when then they can't even, like, type without crutching. I ,like, can't even believe it. It's like listening to girls pretending to audition for like the SirMixaLot intro.... Like, OMG Becky, like did you see like that girls butt, it's like just so big like a donkey like

I would have told her to come on down! Nothing like a good "told ya so" moment.

Lol could the "journalist" confirm any of these conditions. This is incredibly fake and someone just looking for attention...I bet she had to work some overtime maybe once and it upset her lol

Curious...whynwould you need to be up at 2 am for accounting? Unless they were having meetings with people on the other side of the world, accounting never struck me as a 24 7 job

I guess being a journalist means nothing these days, this story is clearly false and someone looking for attention. Labour boards don't exist for no reason lol

Dude, you're such a liar. We just wanted you to tell someone when you went on break. There was no working until 3am, we only expected you to start work at 8am.

My brother worked for e&y. He did work long hours but there was no 2am call or asking when he showered.

I can't read past the inaccurate use of literally over and over with a bunch of "likes" thrown in there. Can't do it.

I am starting to believe people have no "common sense". You are your own boss on your health. Don't let greed run your health into the ground! This is America! There are multiple jobs out there that don't have this stress level.

I had a friend in college that was finishing up his accounting masters degree. He traveled to different firms to check everything out. One of the places paid for a concierge because it was expected that there would be times where they just wouldn't be home.

I ball BS.
