I cannot understand why so many people in the world listen more to a populist politician on health issues than to researchers? I go to the doctor with my complaints and not to the mayor.

The first thing that we wanted to know was which meme about 2020 stood out for Know Your Meme’s Senior Editor Matt personally as the most accurate and funniest so far.

“This is a tough question. The first one to come to mind is ‘Tested Positive for Missing the Homies,’ which is something that I think had very wide appeal during the coronavirus quarantine. I have to admit, I am also suffering from this affliction. What can I say? I miss my homies. I think about that meme a lot,” Matt told Bored Panda.

However, the topic of humor during a deadly pandemic can be touchy. On the one hand, humor and laughter always go hand in hand and help people keep their hope burning strong during times of crisis. On the other hand, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected a lot of people who might not think that the coronavirus is something to take lightly.

When the constitution was written they never thought our country would be as f****d up as it is. So sick of ppl using the constitution it says this it says that. It was written by men over 200 years ago. Wtf. Ppl don't realize times change so rules and the constitution must as well? Wear a damn mask. Protect others. Stop being a macho man or shera. Stop being selfish. I don't understand wtf everybody's problem is. It's so damn political it's disgusting.

Sorry, but no. While I support everyone wearing a mask, your understanding of the Constitution is critically flawed. The US Constitution is a set of very, VERY basic fundamentals of human life. What it contains has not simply become irrelevant due to time. Things like freedom of speech and religion haven't magically gone away because we changed from printing presses to internet. The fundamental principles the Constitution encompasses are just as relevant today as they were 200 years ago and will continue to be relevant for pretty much all human time because they are fundamental concepts inherent in being alive.

Anyway 2030: The entire world is vaccinated against Covid-19 and all its mutations except for the USA where every day 300 people die because they refuse to let the government stick a needle in them to track their daily movements and control their mind.

This is probably a horrible thing to say, so please forgive me. But I'd be ok with 300 anti-vaxxers dying everyday due to their refusal to be vaccinated.

This is a solid response to a stupid comment... but for context, it was a very risky move at the time as at the time, the early vaccines were sometimes deadly...also his comment is is lifted word for word from realclearscience.com.

The smallpox inoculation was never risky. All they did is give them cowpox. It's almost entirely harmless to humans and it inoculates you to other poxs.

1. It was inoculation not vaccination. 2. Soldiers give up certain freedoms when joining the military, always have, always will. I love history to, please if you're going to attempt to quote it do so correctly and know all of it.

And the device he wrote willingly the comment on was ... no, it wasn't, was it? Really? A cellphone? But then again, he is probably not even aware that not long ago, there was this terrible disease called smallpox. As for being forced to wear a certain piece of cloth covering a certain part of your body, I'd just ask you what you think would happen if only ten women would walk down the street together, bare breasts proudly up front!

I've seen so much b******t posted by American politicians (not just about the coronavirus, either), that every time I see "Rep. Although in this instance Thomas Massie is both, but you get my point.

Bit of a difference here....one case is of military members---who are required to follow any rule the government deems necessary---the other group is the entire civilian population of a country, who are supposed to be allowed to make their own decisions.

You love history?! Try reading it. George Washington lead the Continental Army from 1775 to 1783. Jenner was just beginning to understand and perform smallpox vaccinations in 1796. So General Washington could not have had his army vaccinated for smallpox.

“An inoculation doctor would cut an incision in the flesh of the person being inoculated and implant a thread laced with live pustular matter into the wound,” explains Fenn. “The hope and intent was for the person to come down with smallpox. When smallpox was conveyed in that fashion, it was usually a milder case than it was when it was contracted in the natural way.” - https://www.history.com/news/smallpox-george-washington-revolutionary-war

That is why we have the U.S. of Dumbfuckistan today. If they lost the war, the U.S. would be just like Canada, with no slavery, no Civil war and no Genocide of Native Americans. Moreover, Texas, New Mexico and California would be still part of Mexico.

Well. They were soldiers, not citizens. So it was their identity as an "employee" of the government and their boss told them to. Much like uniforms are mandatory at certain retail establishments.

Civilians. The word you were looking for was civilians. Because people in the military absolutely are still citizens. They can vote and enjoy all other rights of citizenship. Being a soldier doesn't make one a mindless tool (or, it shouldn't, anyway). Using your logic, you could say we're all technically employees of the government, in that we all have to obey the law (ie the employee handbook).

“I think I need to take this on a case-by-case basis,” Matt explained. “There are plenty of great coronavirus memes and plenty of bad ones. I think when it comes to a situation like that, one that affects everyone on a global scale, it's kind of fair game. Of course, there's a line, I think, when you start mocking other people's experiences with the virus.”

He added that nearly anything can be funny but the context surrounding a joke makes all the difference. We were also interested to know if Matt thought there was any way that the different sides of the aisle could find common ground.

“There's not any reconciling this point. People will always offend and others will always be offended. I think that most people should just be conscious about what they're meme-ing and what the subtext of the meme is. If people do take offense, try and understand why. It's possible to make jokes about sensitive topics, but you have to listen to your audience in order to get there.”

Finally, we wanted to get Matt’s take about the second half of 2020 and whether he thought the global situation would improve. Unfortunately, he wasn’t too optimistic. “Sorry to say, it's not looking good. We're currently in the middle of a global pandemic that's killed more than 400,000 people, so I think for many people it's probably going to continue being pretty painful.”

He added: “Oh, and there's a US election coming up, which are usually calm, orderly events with no problems, partisanship, or societal ruptures. Sorry to be a bummer!”
