The deadly COVID-19, aka coronavirus, is slowly sweeping across the globe. In the grip of it, people are hoarding face masks, getting their food supplies ready, and shutting their doors to the outside world altogether. A pharmacist from Hong Kong has described the chaos: “it’s like World War III.”

As if the panic levels weren’t high enough already, PETA decided to add some fuel to the fire. The American animal rights organization couldn’t help but share the news of a newly found link between the viral epidemic and the practice of eating animals in their Twitter post. “Carnivorous is an anagram of coronavirus. Coincidence? We think NOT!” reads the text. Apparently, PETA backs up their claim with scientific knowledge: “Scientists have a hunch that contact with animal lives or their dead flesh may be the source of the deadly virus.”

But giving such food for thought to the smart bunch of people on Twitter is like pulling a tiger’s tail—you are likely to get roasted like a barbecue. PETA, don’t say that you didn’t see this coming. Because we know you did. So, after you’re done with this story, take a look at previous PETA roasts here, here and here. Okay, and here.

Bored Panda contacted professor Paul Hunter from The Norwich School of Medicine in order to separate facts from fiction when it comes to coronavirus.

PETA puts it all on the table in their questionable statement

Professor Paul Hunter from the University of East Anglia shed some light on PETA’s controversial statement: “the anagram of coronavirus and carnivorous being the same is entirely coincidence. Coronavirus is named after its ‘crown’ as seen by an electron microscope.” The origin of this virus is indeed linked to animals, since “the virus responsible for COVID-19 is almost certainly derived from bats. The virus is unlikely to have jumped directly from bats to humans, but will have most probably infected an intermediate wild mammal.”

The initial human cases are not connected to the practice of meat-eating, but humans could have been “infected during the slaughter or butchery of these animals. However, since that initial jump, all subsequent cases will have been spread from person to person.” The professor adds that the same thing happened with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) but “we didn’t learn our lessons from that outbreak.”

Prof. Hunter is convinced that the spread of fake news and misinformation in regards to this epidemic is worse than ever before. “We recently published some work trying to estimate the impact of fake news on infectious disease epidemics. In that, we reported a study that Africans who believed fake news and conspiracy theories were less likely to adopt safe funeral practices and so more likely to catch the disease and die.”  That’s why “I, like the WHO [World Health Organization], are very worried about circulating misinformation.”

It’s now clear that we are getting close to the point of a global pandemic and it’s inevitable. “The epidemic in China looks like it is being brought under control, but the last few days have seen a rapid increase in cases globally. If we do get to that point, I do not know how many people will get the illness or die. From the Chinese experience, deaths will almost certainly be in the 100s of thousands, if not greater.” If we can still manage to control it, “global fatalities will remain in the 10s of thousands.”

Bored Panda contacted PETA and asked for a comment regarding their controversial statement. PETA’s president Ingrid Newkirk has told us in her statement:

“Scientists in China have linked the coronavirus to bats and snakes—and it’s been widely reported that the virus appears to have originated in the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, where these and other animals are sold as food. Any health authority will confirm—as has been widely reported in the media—that most influenza viruses and coronaviruses are zoonotic (transmissible from other animals to humans). Filthy farms and markets crammed full of sick animals are breeding grounds for deadly maladies, as we saw with bird flu and SARS, which killed more than 900 people in just nine months. As the current coronavirus spreads, PETA is urging the public to cut off animal-borne pathogens at the source by going vegan.”

It seems that PETA is not ready to surrender.

Corona mean crown, and the name was picked due to the shape of the group of viruses we're talking about. But I understand PETA, I've been addicted to word games too, recently. ♡

How does Peta still thrive when there are so very many animal charities around who are really caring, and honest, and who really need help to exist? Don't get it. Who is giving them money for this c**p. They kill animals. All the time. Still happening tho.....

Saving the suffering animals.. and the plundered earth...and self-destructing people is NOT crazy propaganda!!!!!! Get the facts!!!! It's just amazing that an animal killing institution like Peta that does absolutely nothing for animal welfare, but instead focuses on killing as many healthy animals as they can get their hands on, can still be active and is supported by a lot of people.

How many did you find homes for???? What did you do for those which nobody wants??? Did you volunteered and/or supported any animal rights/protection organizations??? Did you established an animal sanctuary???? Please answer these questions!!! Answer them right now, right here, please!!!! People do support Peta because they get the facts. There are thousands of misinformation posted on social media which need to be fact-checked - follow the money, and discover truth. What is your motivation for posting your misinformation and such attacks???? Answer my questions, please.

The flu has infected over 30 million with 10,000+ deaths in America alone this year. These deaths include children unlike COVID-19. The flu vaccine has been less than 50% effective this year. Where's the news about this.

Bob, I wonder the same thing. The strains of flu viruses are more and more potent. It's not just live animal meat markets that pose a public health menace. Factory farming and the slaughter industry have been linked for emergence and spread of whole host of threats, including antibiotic resistant bacteria, egg borne Salmonella, mad cow disease,.... and dangerous strains of influenza. - Our planet is not expending, what is expending (growing) is human overpopulation and urban sprawl, the wild places (nature) are being plundered and completely destroyed, also, hundreds of thousand animals raised for human consumption, to cater to that insatiable appetite for meat, dairy, and eggs, Do not be surprised when more deadly bacteria and ever more potent viruses will emerge in the future.

John Louis, you are just unbelievably ignorant of scientific facts. It's not just Peta who opposes these useless, atrocities, but also scientists and medical doctors. The technology provided superior, extremely reliable and accurate, non-animal methods of testing which are wildly available!!! Get the facts, real scientific facts for God sake, actually for the sake of humanity. "I know of no achievement through vivisection, no scientific discovery that could not have been obtained without such barbarism and cruelty." - Charles W. Mayo, MD ...(you know Mayo clinic, and its history, don't you?) ....that was a hundred years ago, technology progressed immensely since then, there's absolutely no need to torture animals for "cures" and "treatments" which actually hurt people and do not produce any positive results. (Didn't you noticed all those TV commercial - attorneys ready to sue the drug companies?) Get the facts!! Educate yourself before you pass judgement!!!!

PETA is a terrorist organization that has zero understanding of animals. Our local chapter is responsible for the deaths of at least fourteen dogs, twenty-three cats, four calves and six pigs over the past eighteen months alone. They keep trying to "rescue" farm animals by removing them from pens and paddocks and "letting them run free." The animals do run off --- right onto the highway and end up as roadkill. What does PETA say? "Well, they would have died anyway." Yeah...not. Idiots.

What did you do for those which nobody wants? Did you established an animal sanctuary??? Did you volunteer at animal shelter ?? Do you support animal rights/protection organizations?? I gathered that you attempted to save those fourteen dogs, twenty-three cats, four calves, and six pigs over the past eighteen months alone. If not, than you are the terrorist! Yeah, idiot. Liucija Adomaite gives examples of "the smart bunch of people on Twitter", I think NOT...  Peta Eating Tasty Animals, oh c'mon Liucija, who says that anymore?  And some naive little twerp quoting the infamous Rick Berman https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Berman who got rich by being paid to lie by the industries that cause the most mess in the world, including the meat industry who funds him and his PETA KILLS facebook nonsense.  The rest of the tweets are the usual self congratulatory brain farts, but nothing new.  And we're left with the fact that coronavirus is an anagram of carnivorous and while that may only be a coincidence, it is in fact quite relevant https://nutritionfacts.org/video/pandemics-history-prevention/ and so is the old adage "you are what you eat"   ....dead meat. The vast, vast majority of humans are not carnivores. We are omnivores, as we evolved to be. So PETA hates carnivores? many of the Earth's most endangered animals are carnivores -- tigers, numerous species of small wild cats that may go extinct before humans have even heard of them, some species of wolves, sea otters, many species of sharks, orcas, and lots of others.

To AnnieLaurie. "Man,. ..is a tame, civilized animal...but if he be insufficiently or ill educated he is the most savage of earthly creatures." - Plato, Greek philosopher (427 - 347 BC/BCE). Peta's intention was to bring attention to the source of the outbreak of corona virus, and past and future and more lethal viruses. Just in U.S. people eat way more over one million animals per hour; three hundred are heinously killed every second!!! 175 chickens are murdered every minute; a pig is murdered every 5 seconds; "If we pursue habit of eating animals, and if our neighbor follows a similar path, will we need to go to war against our neighbor to secure greater pasturage, because ours will not be enough to sustain us, and our neighbor will have a similar need to wage war on us for the same reason?" - Socrates, Greek philosopher, known as one of the founders of Western philosophy (469 - 399 BC/BCE) Don't worry Annie we invented factory farms, thus destroying our planet and our health.

Perpetual, there's nothing to joke about. Peta is aiming to bring attention to the horrific, sanguinary, and lethal consequences of excessive consumption of animal proteins (meat, dairy, eggs) not only to human health and the health of our planet, also to spare billions upon the billions of animals, both exotic and domesticated, unimaginable, unconscionable immense suffering, the heinous, merciless way they are murdered to keep up with that ever more destructive appetite for meat, eggs, and dairy. All are closely related. By the way, did you know that there is no animal - mammal, in nature which drinks mother's milk after weaning? Not to mention the milk from another species??? Only human beings are capable of such a perversion.....and paying for it: animal milk protein, called Casein, is very dissimilar from human protein and contributes (with other strong animal proteins in meat and eggs) to chronic, painful arthritis, diabetes, heart diseases and various cancers.

I know that Christina Uhlir is going to respond to this because she responds to everything but I have one thing to say about PETA: They are a horrible group and make animal lovers look bad. They kill more animals than they save and come up with some of the dumbest and inappropriate campaigns. The coronavirus outbreak is not the time for them to be trying to make up a new ad. They should have more compassion for the humans dying from it instead of playing word games with it.

Oh man ... people like that Reaper above (not in the comments) are the reason some vegans feel forced to consider themselves a better person right away. But let's, just for a moment, be serious and put it short - it is a decision driven by ethics and not by food preferences - that is secondary and follows logically. While it may be too much to simply call oneself a "better person", analyzing the reasons and effects of a decision and comparing it to its alternative is by no means arrogant or suprematist - it is just honest. And, done seriously, this simply leads to "vegan options cause less or no harm than options involving animal products" - simple as that. You'd really need to make up somethign way out of proportion, relying on a lot of unlikely-to-ever-happen stuff to find single examples where a vegan option will cause more harm than an oprion employing animal products - period. PETA isn't even relevant to that. So don't always get this mixed up!

Anyway, should we remind the fact that PETA means "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals"? It doesn't compare with a "normal" word as coronavirus, carnivorous whatsoever as it's an acronym. The planet Earth is not expending. What is expending is human population - 7.8 billion, projected to grow to 10 billion in few years. The animals raised for meat, dairy, eggs greatly exceed the human population, there are hundreds of billions animals heinously tortured in factory farms and unconscionably murdered in the high-speed slaughter houses. As a direct consequence of this we have the health crisis and opioid crisis - the strong animal proteins, dietary cholesterol (animal you eat, not cholesterol your body makes for its use) is wracking a havoc in human body: chronic, painful inflammations (such as arthritis), chronic diseases (such as diabetes), heart diseases, and various cancers. But....what a heck, we'll pop in pills, get shots and surgeries and continue to destroy the environment and torture animals... and to make ourselves feel better, we'll torture more animals for fun, and in laboratories in useless experiments, when superior, highly accurate, non-animal methods are wildly available.

How much will you all laugh when you get infected with this virus??? There is 7.8 billion people on the planet Earth, and rapidly increasing. There are also billions upon billions animals brutally slaughtered for human consumption. More than 300 hundred every second. Americans alone eat way over one million animals every hour. 175 chickens are slaughtered every minute, one pig is slaughtered every 5 seconds. And yes the corona virus originated in "wet" meat markets in China, where animals, exotic and domesticated alike, including dogs and cats, are crammed in small cages and tortured (Oh the meat tastes better) and heinously slaughtered. How can a half decent person not be moved by that? There are more deadly bacteria and ever more potent viruses coming: - monkeypox virus traces back to exotic pet trade; - swine flu to cruel long distance live animal export; - bird flue high-speed slaughter and cook fighting industry; - Ebola virus to bush meat (primates - monkeys)

I know people are probably going to downvote me for saying this but, while PETA is an atrocious organization, scientists are linking this particular coronavirus to Pangolins (most likely first infected by bats), which are often used in traditional Chinese medicine. PETA is hypocritical and awful in many ways, but if these animals had not been consumed, this particular virus may not have crossed species into human hosts. The anagram is stupid. However, the consumption of animals (or close contact with animals) can lead to new outbreaks of zoonotic viruses—such as swine flu (H1N1), avian flu (H5N1 or H7N9), SARS, and MERS—which can they be transmitted human to human.

Idiots.

They kill more animals than they save and come up with some of the dumbest and inappropriate campaigns. The coronavirus outbreak is not the time for them to be trying to make up a new ad. Oh man ... people like that Reaper above (not in the comments) are the reason some vegans feel forced to consider themselves a better person right away.

Christina Uhlir
