“Absolutely Inhumane”: Cop Who Fatally Tasered 95YO Woman In Nursing Home Reveals Reason

An officer in New South Wales (NSW) is currently facing trial after using his Taser on a great-grandmother.

Senior Constable Kristian White defended himself, stating that he perceived the woman, Clare Nowland, as an “imminent threat” and used the electric implement to paralyze the 95-year-old, who suffered fatal injuries after receiving the discharge to her chest.

Highlights
  • Officer White claims 95-year-old was an 'imminent threat' due to a knife.
  • White faces manslaughter charges, claiming self-defense in court.
  • Clare Nowland had dementia and was under antipsychotic medication.
  • Staff reported Nowland's erratic behavior and past knife attacks.

White is facing charges of manslaughter at the NSW Supreme Court, with his defense team arguing that his response was justified because Nowland was armed with a knife.

Prosecutors, on the other hand, stated that White had breached his duty, causing the woman’s unlawful death due to negligence.

White’s barrister, Troy Edwards, claimed that his client acted in self-defense because he believed a violent confrontation to have been imminent. The officer seconded this version of events and has remained consistent in his testimony since the day of the incident.

Detective Sergeant Mitchell Bosworth, who led the investigation, testified that White’s account reflected his belief that using force was inevitable to prevent potential harm to others, including police officers.

The trial also included a geriatrician’s testimony on Clare Nowland’s mental health. Dr. Susan Kurrle, who did not personally treat the 95-year-old, reviewed her medical records and confirmed that she had dementia and had been prescribed potent antipsychotic medication to help manage the symptoms.

Records from Nowland’s nursing home also referenced her acting erratically, with “intrusive behaviors” complicating her stay.

Staff from Nowland’s nursing home said they were forced to call security after she attacked them with knives during a dementia episode

Footage from the nursing home was shown in court to further support White’s defense, showing Nowland slowly moving with a walker while holding two knives. Fellow residents were interviewed, and they reported Nowland entering their rooms uninvited during the night, but said she had not threatened them.

Nursing home staff also stated that Nowland waved the knives in the air after they tried to detain her, eventually throwing one at a staff member who was able to avoid it, causing it to hit the ground. After the incident, staff called emergency services, labeling Nowland a “very aggressive resident.”

“The circumstances she’s passed away in are unfathomable. I think we’re all still shocked,” said Kylie Paske, Nowland’s granddaughter, who attended the trial with other family members.

“You don’t think you’re going to wake up to your grandmother being Tasered.”

Investigations are still ongoing, with prosecutors trying to determine whether White’s actions were justified, or were an act of manslaughter that showed reckless disregard for human life.

Negligent on the part of the nursing home to allow the woman to have access to knives (unless they were not-deadly plastic knives/butter knives and the article is leaving out this info on purpose.) But even if the knives were a sort that could actually harm others - she still didn’t need to be Tased.

I worked as a certified nursing assistant many moons ago, on an Alzheimer's Unit. We had a patient admitted with a dementia diagnosis that was actually psychotic. He had worked in a lumber mill for 50 years and at 67 was very muscular. He was also very aggressive. He managed to get a hold of me and to drag me into a bathroom by the neck and proceeded to try to strangle me. It was terrifying! I also had a frail appearing little old lady rip a chunk of flash off the back of my hand as I was trying to assist her with dressing...

I read "Footage from the nursing home was shown in court to further support White’s defense, showing Nowland slowly moving with a walker while holding two knives." - and that's supposed to *defend* the decision to hit the woman with a taser shot? "slowly moving with a walker"? Right - so, pick up a cushion off the nearest comfy chair, and use that to trap whatever attempt at a knife attack she might make? I've met a frail 90-something year old with dementia (grandparent - very sad). Such people are not a threat to anyone with a sound mind and sound body.

Honestly I shouldn't say this but look at that goof. That's the kind complete loser who became a cop for all the wrong reasons and probly gets off on use of force. Also I get lawyers gotta lawyer but "a threat of violence was imminent" yeah guy my cat gets the zoomies and scratches me sometimes. Should I respond with a taser? Is that a reasonable and proportionate reaction to his violence? I am genuinely upset.

My 82 year old mother with mental illnesses and dementia (undiagnosed at that time) once came at me with a butcher's knife held aloft in her fist while my back was turned. Luckily, I turned at the last minute, shoved her against the wall and knocked the butcher knife out of her hand. I sat on her while I called the police and we had her involuntarily committed to the psychiatric hospital. She is now in a nursing home and appropriately heavily medicated (including benzos) so that she is unable to physically harm others - she gave me several black eyes, broken toes and fingers and deep scratches/wounds that scarred. She is also only allowed plastic cutlery. Appropriately heavily medicated, including benzos, both orally and by injection PRN, is the key. The only way she harms now is with her words.

He's not justified, but in a way, I think he did have his reasons. She was dangerous, going into other residents' rooms unprompted, on very powerful d***s for dementia, and just acting erratically. She probably couldn't be rehabilitated, if she even knew at all what she was doing. Dementia is so sad, and can obviously be dangerous to the patients, as well as others. Yes it's sad how she died, and the officer will have to answer for what he did. What else could he have done to disarm her? She had a knife in each hand. I'd be scared and either hide from her, or would be on the defense. That would probably have ended badly, for one of us.

Forrest Hobbs

1 week ago (edited) DotsCreated by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

She had a knife in each hand but couldn't move without her walker. Anything that knocked her over posed a risk of killing her. What could he have done to disarm her? Any one of a hundred different things. Standard police gear here in the UK includes a stab vest and extensible batons, and our police are trained to use those batons to break the hand of someone wielding a knife. That would have done the job nicely, if the officer thought the situation warranted using such extreme measures. Meanwhile: the "powerful d***s" were antipsychotics, which have a tendency to dull the senses and generally slow you down, not make you erratic or dangerous: they are prescribed precisely to stop people being erratic and dangerous.

The comments here are not about "the police" but about one particular incompetent policeman who did the wrong thing and killed someone - as a direct consequence of his incompetence. If a fit and healthy man, trained to handle violent threats from the worst that there is, ends up killing a disabled 95 year old woman due to his use of inappropriate force - well, that man deserves critcism. Or are you, Kalevra, one of those people who thinks that police officers are all perfect and beyond criticism, with a licence to kill anyone they like?

Yes they do. Cops are notorious for lying, to protect each other and to justify their existence.

"Honestly I shouldn't say this but ..." You knew you shouldn't judge a person based on nothing but their physical appearance, but you did it anyway.

Somehow I think the two cops on Adam 12 would have handled the situation quite different. If you can't really determine when your life is truly in danger, then you probably shouldn't be on the police force.

Care home staff are often hired on minimum wages with minimum training. They're generally not the ones to blame. Blame the care home management for not hiring suitably trained staff, and blame the police officer for Doing It Wrong.

poor excuse for a policeman if he can't overpower a 95 year old without killing her.

This is a no one wins situation. I really want to know why the lady was able to access knives if she had a history of aggressive behaviour. The nursing home had to hold some responsibility here.

I would have armed three or four large men with quilts to throw over her. I worked a women jail and all we had were bed sheets to rush and wrap crazy fighting inmates and it worked.

One big man would have been enough for this 95 year old woman who couldn't walk unaided.

Comments did not disappoint. I knew immediately that you all would side with the woman. You all should become cops since you can do it so much better also since your opinion on police is so poor do us all a favor and do not call on them to help you when you are a victim.
