Load More Replies...Curiously, people in this thread tended to interpret bada** in 4 different ways. One of them was stuff like catching food or making an excellent move in a sports game. Then there were edgy things people did and got away with, like flipping the bird for a camera and having that picture printed in a school newspaper. Third—successful self-defense and petty, violent revenge. Lastly, heartwarming stories about saving another person against all odds. What united them is the feeling of pride.

Stage 3 survivor here. My family and friends freaked out way more than I did. It took a little bit to convince them to NOT walk around on eggshells and it was ok to joke about it to ease the pain.

My Dad (dad with a capital D) cared for my Mom at home as she battled cancer. They had complete coverage and he had money if he'd wanted a caregiver but she wanted to be at home and he wanted to care for her. It took her 7 years to die. Married 47 years. family-615...695986.jpg

Not just widows and widowers either. I'm a carer for my mother who has alzheimer's. I finally got away for 1 night on my own in a hotel and it was bliss. No responsibilities and not having to be available all the time. Made me realise what I'm missing but willing to miss out on for my mum.

I was at a small local concert that was being held in a park. It was a bunch of metal and thrash bands, mostly local acts , but a few touring bands. The gazebo where we were playing was on a small island in a lake, with the only access being a bridge that led to the parking lot. The event organizers had a couple of people stationed on the bridge to take tickets. It was a pretty cool setup to just be available for us to rent out.
Everyone was being pretty chill and enjoying the show. There was a mosh pit with a few guys, but there was plenty of room. Then this group of idiots shows up. 70% of this crowd is underage, but these guys show up drunk and with more beer and immediately start causing trouble.
They are asked to leave, and told the cops are being contacted. Tensions are high, yelling and cussing all over, but hey they are leaving now. Maybe we can go back to enjoying ourselves.
One of the organizers walked behind them while she was escorting them out, phone in hand. Just as they reach the bridge, this guy turned around and slapped the crap out of her.
I saw red. The stage was about 50 meters from the bridge and I broke into a sprint heading for this guy, ready to whoop his a**. I'm half way there I all five of these guys turn and run. I'm a big guy, but still, I didn't expect all five to run.
I get to the chick that got slapped and I stop running, she is safe and I'm feeling like a bada** for chasing these guys off. Then I turn to see that all of the no less than 200 people at the show saw the same thing I did and were right behind me, ready to stomp these guys onto the ground.
So, I didn't chase them off myself, but I basically led a battle charge.

I'm a metal head, mainly black/death/thrash and by and large our community are the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. I've made a lot of great friends over the past 20 years and seeing the same people at shows feels a bit like a family reunion. It's utter d**ks like them who give metal heads a really bad name. That poor lady, I hope she was alright and she wasn't cut or bruised or anything like that. Leading a battle charge is incredibly cool, you must have been pumped. I wish I'd seen that!

I floated between groups in school but had a lot of friends in the metal/goth/alt rockers and I think they were overall the most pleasant people. Polite to strangers, didn't waste time trash-talking others. That's awesome you still see them and get to hang!

I was pumping gas at a station with my sister (me being 19 at the time and her being 16) when a man (probably like 25 years old) got into the backseat of my car. I started to yell at him to get out of my car. My sister was shaking scared. He then pulled a gun on me and told me to get in the car and drive. Without even thinking I started to make him question himself by saying “or what? Are you going to shoot me right here in this well lit gas station? There are other people around, did you really think this through?” He started to look around, called me a “stupid b**ch” got out of the car and ran off.

Wow! I admire the calmness of this person! She did the right thing even though most of us would be terrified to do it! While you are around people you should try your best not to let your kidnapper take you away! Cause once you are in an isolated area, your chances to survive are much less

Yeah was always taught that. If they are trying to take you elsewhere stand your ground and start yelling and making a scene and make them have to kill you at the first location (if it goes that badly) because it is not where they have prepared to take their time and they will not necessarily have the equipment or the scenario for clean up

The thread had mostly believable stories, hard to find anything about walking away without looking at explosions or catching ridiculously oversized fish. Reading many of them is like having a movie end in a way you wanted with an even cooler twist. People responded to one another with respect and cheered each other on, particularly if a person did something selfless, while many added similar stories of their own.

This story reminded me about a man from my country - Renato Grbic, a fisherman and restaurant owner from Belgrade, Serbia, who rescued more than 30 people who have attempted suicide by jumping from the Pancevo Bridge. You can google his name, he is a true modern day hero.

Buddy of mine in college had an absolutely awful string of family members passing away. He had booked his Amtrak ticket home for something like the third time that semester. The last time he did that, he was two days delayed because of a cargo train derailment on the same tracks.
While he was sleeping, I used my northwest airlines miles to book him a ticket home in first class.
He deserved it and I had “earned” them just riding back and forth to home.

On holiday, waiting for a shuttle bus at 6 in the morning my wife got attacked by a lunatic. Before he could touch her with his fist I jumped in between and punched him in the face. I felt it was a life and death situation. In the end my wife and I scared him off with the help of a street dog that bit him in the a**. I don't consider myself a violent person but I literally saw red. I still have a scar on my chest from where his fist hit me (he was wearing a ring), but never when I see that scar do I feel like a victim.

I'm a woman and I stepped in between attacker and victim on numerous occasions and also got hit several times,so I know how it feels and you did great. To me it's a bit normal because of all the training I did, but I know it's not for everyone, no matter if it's man or woman. You're brave.

Since several answers here involve saving lives, here are some first aid tips from St. Jones Ambulance. If you see someone collapsed, they advise you do a primary survey. DR. ABC is a good acronym for remembering what steps you need to take. It stands for Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation.

Guy pulled a knife on me when I was a bit tipsy and waiting for a bus and demanded my wallet.
Without thinking I hit him in the jaw and knocked him out cold.
Stole his knife and walked away. Still have the knife somewhere around here.

Did exactly the same thing to a guy years ago. He tried to rob me so I knocked him out cold & stole everything he had, including his shoes & his jacket. Kept his money & threw the rest in a dumpster i including his wallet. Wanted him to know how it feels to be robbed.

When I was 18, I was an EMT
My first emergency call, after we got the guy to the ER alive, the ER doctor looked at me and said “Do you know what you did? You just saved that mans life.”
I’m 23 now and EMS wasn’t the career for me, but I still think about that moment a lot.

This is awesome, but also, you were an EMT at 18? How is that possible? Do EMTs not need schooling where you live? It can't be healthy for an 18 y/o to be an EMT. ETA where I live you can't possibly become an EMT at 18 years of age. Before you even qualify for the training program you need to be a registered nurse (that means at least 4 years, sometimes up to 6 years of fulltime school after highschool). Then you need to do the EMT training, which takes up a full school year. Oh and did I mention that if you do the lowest level highschool and lowest level schooling after that you don't even qualify at all?. So highschool ends when you are anywhere between 17 and 20 years old. At least 4 years (usually 5 or 6 if you want to do anything medical/healtcare related) after that AND the EMT training in itself. Pretty much impossible to be an EMT before 25 years old, unless you are some sort of genius who skipped 7 grades

Sounds a bit fishy that. Hmmm not saying you have a big nose or anything.....
First, check if it's safe to approach the person yourself. As you approach, introduce yourself and ask questions to see if they respond. If they don't, kneel beside them and gently shake their shoulders while continuing to ask questions. If they still don't respond, pinch their earlobes to see if they respond to pain. To sum up response check results, the person can be alert, responding to voice, to pain (pinching), or unresponsive.

So when i was like ten my little league baseball team got into the final game. It was really intense because we where in the tenth inning when there is usually only 6. We were tied for a while. It was looking like the end of the game for my team because we had two outs and they were up by one. There was i guy on second and s guy on third. I was up at bat with two strikes. I was prob the worst player on the team at that time. But anyways what would be the final pitch comes. I swing and i connected with the ball! It flew right over first and both of the guys on base got home and we won. All my team came out of the dug out running twords me shouting, " MVP! MVP!" That is prob my proudest moment ever. I know it isn't much compared to the other stories but i am proud of it.

Matt2e43, Shaun Greiner: I was once at a San Francisco Giants game where in the bottom of the *tenth* we were three runs down with bases loaded and all of the pinch hitters had been used up in the ninth, so THE PITCHER goes to the plate and hits a grand slam. All of us still at Candlestick Park on that brutally cold, windy summer night (certainly no more than 50) were jumping up and down, screaming our fool heads off. It was so exciting, despite the fact that we were at that time the worst team in the National League and were already statistically eliminated from any post-season action. But we did collect out Croix de Candlestick pins on our way out.

A while back i looked outside my house to see the sky was overcast so i lifted up my hands and snapped my fingers and lightning flashed right in front of my house. I felt hella bada** after that moment and recently i thought back to that moment and and decided to snap my fingers again and then a power surge or a short outage took place in my house. This was late in the night btw. One day i will learn to master this power i have over electricity and exploit it for my own lazy benefits.

You’re saying that you don’t want kids, cause you wouldn’t want to save them?
If the person does not respond, you need to open their airway by gently tilting their forehead back with one hand and with the other hand's two fingers under the chin. Check if the person is breathing by placing your ear near their nose for 10 seconds, looking to see if their chest moves. If they are not breathing normally, ask someone to call an ambulance or do it yourself on speakerphone. Then begin CPR with chest compressions.

I grew up in a not-so-safe neighborhood, and when I was 16 had a job at the local Dairy Queen. One slow night, 5 minutes before closing, I'm working with one other person, a smaller girl, when two guys ride up on their bikes. Nobody else was around, and it was already completely dark. They walked up to the door and talked a bit before entering. One of them pulled out a gun from a pocket or his pants and put it into his jacket, and a few seconds later goes to open the door. I still don't know why this was my reaction, but suddenly I, the tall, skinny, pale ginger, took a step towards the door and pointed back outside, made eye contact and said
"You're going to have to leave that outside."
The guy with the gun stopped and just said "oh", politely set the gun outside on the concrete, and came back inside. This was immediately followed by the most "okay, just act normal" moment in my life.

Pulled someone out of an overturned burning car while pregnant. I was pregnant. I was on my way to work at a home health company. It was a huge snow storm and i was the only one with 4WD and had to go open the office alone. So i had to leave the guy with some other bystanders and go open shop so none of our patients would get stuck without care. Then later i had to rescue my boss from the side of the highway aftermath she ran into a ditch.

If the person is breathing normally, check circulation, look over the body to see if there is severe bleeding. If you find it, try to control it. At this point, you should call an ambulance. I saved my dads life during a medical emergency on the side of the highway last year. The 911 operator couldn't hear me because of all the road noise so I didn't have anybody coaching me through anything.

One time I was babysitting my 2 year old nephew with my little sister. She was on her phone like always not paying attention. He was sitting backwards on the couch, I was sitting accross the room from him. I seen him starting to fall so I jumped up and went over, I swear this next part happened in slow motion like a movie. Right as he was about to land headfirst on the hardwood floor, I caught him, flipped him around and put him back on the couch. I could tell he was prepared to start crying, but he never hit the floor so he just sat there confused. My sister missed it all despite sitting right beside him.

I saved a baby falling out of a shopping cart. Slid in and got my hand under his head before he hit the floor and cushioned him. Ran into his mom and brothers like 14 years later and they knew me right away and ran over and hugged me. One boy who had been a toddler and was now about 16 says, "Mom, that's the lady who saved my baby brother at ShopRite!" How did he even remember it?! It made my day running into them.

Not my most bad a** moment but once in 3rd grade, we were playing dodgeball with those iconic red rubber balls. And my two friends happen to be on the other team that day and well. I had a ball, f**king whipped it at one of my friends, cracked him straight in the face, the ball bounced off, only to hit my other friend right in his face. I got a collateral headshot in dodgeball. By far my favorite elementary school moment.

Reminds me of a thing that happened to me in gym class. We were playing volley ball and I was pretty terrible. I'd usually hit the ball too hard. The ball came in and I bumped it hard into the ceiling. It bounced around among the metal rafter beams and the gym lights for a bit then eventually came back down and landed in the volleyball box on the other side of the gym. It bounced up once and hit the lid which then promptly closed, sealing the ball in the box. My teammates said "We should get a point for that!".

Got an inflatable kayak flipped somewhere between class 3 and 4 rapids on the Colorado River. Was drug down about 10 to 12 feet came up under the kayak had to get out from under it in the rapids. Gathered all my gear back in the water and didn't even lose the sunglasses off my face somehow.
Also found out a kid died in that same spot a week prior.

University researcher blew off part of hand while using a glovebox (kind of a clear box that has gloves attached to it facing into the box so you can work with chemicals under a nitrogen blanket.). They ran around bleeding, fire fighter got the part of hand and took them away, then I was hazmat incident commander dealing with the situation. My boss and I suited up and went in to secure the box so that air didn’t get into box causing explosion. nitrogen was just blowing out of the box-we had to essentially close it again. Good old days.

I think they mentioned about working with chemicals UNDER the nitrogen blanket. Whatever that means. I do biology, not chemistry. But I think it means that the nitrogen was supposed to be there as a stabilizer so that whatever volatile s**t they were working with would be contained to the bottom of said blown up box? I made the front page of my college newspaper by giving the middle finger.
It was at this music festival they put on every year and I noticed my buddy Nick taking pictures for the newspaper on the stage, so I decided to flip him off. My girlfriend had written "Te amo" ("I love you" in Spanish) and drew hearts around it. I guess they thought it would make a great picture for the cover of the Valentine's day edition and went with it.
The coolest thing about it is that the college has an archive of every single issue of the newspaper since they started it back in the mid-1800s, so there is a copy of that being preserved there for future generations to see.
A close second is winning "Most Likely to be Out of Dress Code" my senior year of high school because I was in detention all the time for dress code violations. It was probably one of the most bada** things at a private Jesuit school with a dress code.

Ugh "friendzoned". It just implies entitlement. Like she was denying you something you were owed just because she didn't feel the same way. But kudos for doing your job and not letting her mom die, despite being "friendzoned" by her daughter. 🙄

I was a lonely 15 year old female, liked to go for walks. Went to the local park to feed the ducks when a man approached me in the park - he open his coat to show me his "possessions". I didn't know what to do so I started to laugh and asked him what he was gonna do with that little thing. Thank goodness he turned and started to run so I kept up the teeny weenie comments then some guy tackled him and smacked the crap out of him!

When I was about 12 I was helping break a 2 year old Appaloosa stallion. I was leading him around the neighborhood getting him used to his harness and lead rope. All of a sudden I felt his teeth rake my back. I jump forward just missing him biting me. Gut reaction it pissed me off and I popped him right in the nose. He spooked back and fell over on his side. Never tried to bite me again. (I well knew the damage horses can do biting each other. There was a stallion relative of his that had broken out of his stall and fought a half grown colt, bit his ear off and swallowed it. You don't mess around with horses that bite.) I was pretty Bada--- for a girl.

I am 58, female, disabled, retired university professor of Comparative Religion, currently an artist, etc. Also only 5' tall. When I was in grad school about 20 years ago, I was at a convenience store one Saturday night at about 3AM. It was really packed with students younger than myself. One big and tall young man was in line buying beer, and obnoxiously smoking. He happened to be standing right behind me. So I turned around and asked him if he was "old enough to buy that beer?" He said he was. Then I reached up and took the cigarette right out of his mouth, and crushed it on the floor, and I said, "then it's time you started acting like it."

My latest badass moment happened a month ago in NYC while I was on vacation with my husband there. We were staying in a familiar neighborhood, and were walking down the street about to do some shopping. There was an older woman begging on the sidewalk. I gave her a twenty and told her it was so she could get some dinner and go home for the day.

A few years ago, I was in the crosswalk and a turning car didn't see me. (To be fair, it was dark and rainy.) I realized the guy wasn't going to stop, so I jumped up and curled into a ball-- I think my backpack took most of the impact. I hit the windshield rolled off towards the driver's side, landed on both feet, and cussed out the driver. Also, to his credit, he drove me to the urgent care a few blocks down the road and filed a police report on himself while I was getting x-rays. I had a few bruises.

At my final job before retiring. There is a certain surgeon that most everyone can't stand. Think she is a total be-atch. I know she's not. I understand her. She was on call one weekend. I was looking after a lady with a bowel issue where you just had to watch carefully and see where this leads. She told me to call her if I see ANY changes. I kept an extremely close eye on her. Every check, things looked normal. Then the next check there had suddenly appeared a pink spot on the left side of her abdomen about the size of a quarter. Only change seen. She said to call her for ANY change. I'm not going to wait until the next check to see if it has gotten bigger. Its a tiny change, so I called her. We ended up whisking her off to emergency surgery and she went to ICU after. Later, this surgeon who everyone cant stand, came to the floor to find me and say " I just want to thank you for calling me. You saved her life." I've saved a lot of lives in 38 years. It is so cool when you do that.

First year of high school I got bullied a lot. I was a small kid starting high school (now I'm 1m98cm). So anyway during a lesson some of the bigger/tougher kids thought it'd be funny to throw stuff at me from behind. It started with gum, but the biggest idiot threw a f*****g pen and aimed for my head. I caught the pen, behind my head without looking like a frickin ninja. And yes, I've been thought martial arts from a young age and I guess that helped. However they left me alone after that, because they thought I was some kind of Ninja Turtle.

One of my engineer colleagues was on his way to a job going down a motorway and noticed an overturned car in the ditch to the side, pulled over and quickly realised a woman and her 2 young children were in the car, smashed the windows and pulled them out, got them to safety and a couple of minutes later the car caught on fire. He was in our companies news letter of course and he just says it was right place right time but no, boy done good, and he was bought many beers at the xmas gathering.

In 6th grade Cross Country we were going up against a school we had never beat before in many previous years, rich fancy school with lots more people than us. The 8th graders did the first race, and our team won, then the 7th graders, we won, then it was time for the 6th graders and I was one of our best runners so my coach was putting a bunch of pressure on me, I figured out other really good runner would take the win, but then she dropped behind and it was up to me to win the thing, I stayed directly behind the girl from the other team the entire 1.5 miles, then on the final stretch I raced right past her and claimed our team’s win. Most badass I’d ever felt at the time. Never gotten 1st before that.
