40 ‘Cool Guides’ People Shared On This Group That Contain Information They Don’t Teach At School (New Pics)
Whether we're talking about politics or the animal kingdom, learning something new can require a fair amount of time and effort. Luckily, we don't always have to read lengthy scientific papers. Some people do it for us. And not only that — they narrow down everything to a few bullet points and illustrate them to help our minds remember.
And if you want a place that stores these effective tools, look no further than the subreddit r/CoolGuides. As the name suggests, it collects picture-based reference guides for pretty much anything and everything.
"If it seems like something someone might print, physically post, and reference then it is a good link for this sub," its moderators write in its 'About' section.

Opossums Are Our Friends
Let’s check whether we have something similar before importing them. Maybe Siebenschläfer?
Load More Replies..."If you see me, kindly ignore me." I'm sorry buddy, but if I ever get to see one of you IRL I am grabbing my camera and following you around the garden. <3
These things are everywhere where I live. I came home once to find one sitting on my sofa watching T.V.
Load More Replies...Unlike the Australian brush tail possums, that are garden eating roof elephants. Haha
Roof elephants. So true. And leave pellets as evidence of not just being a bad dream.
Load More Replies...I have them in my yard, and I can confirm the lack of ticks. They eat a LOT of them.
They're common in my neighborhood, and I've not found a tick in our yard or on our pets in the 13-odd years we've lived here.
Load More Replies...Well the opossum is far from being a globally present animal. it's kind of a niche info
One night I was sitting on my front porch, but on the ground. I was on the edge so there was a bush to my right side. All of a sudden, a opossum came around the bush and looked at me as if to say, "what the hell are you doing out here so late?" I had never witnessed one up close and personal like that. After having 4 mini heart attacks, and of course paralyzed from fear, it just went along on it's way, not giving a crap about me. It was super cute irl too!
I had basically the same thing happen to me, except I was just on my porch. It's very low to the ground and only have 2 small cement steps with a large rose bush hugging them. When a healthy full grown opossum comes walking up to the porch as I'm sitting there smoking and just looks at me in surprise 😮and slowly continues on it's way. Idk what I expected but it was uneventful. I've often heard of hissing and growing from them, so it must not have felt threatened.
Load More Replies...Believe it or not, these little wonders of nature eat dog s**t. Didn't know that until I lived in the city for bit. I couldn't figure out why I never had to clean up dog mess in the yard. I googled"disappearing dog s**t" and found a game cam video of a possum in a lady's back yard, cleaning up after her dog. Way cool.
they eat carrion also. Some are full of worms & internal parasites. Beware!

This should be higher up. We all have or will be in contact with someone with alzheimers.
I learned not to expect or force them to comply with your world, to be more effective, embrace more if their world. One guy found out that just by giving dementia patients iPods or Walkman’s programmed to play music from the patients younger days, they came alive. Find those memory triggers and use them for the good of the patients
Yes music, or let them taste things or smell. Senses can trigger. You can compare it with small childeren, they love to touch/taste/hear/feel/smell things, it keeps the brain functioning and can make people happy.
Load More Replies...We used to visit my wife's dad in his nursing home. He would often tell us that he had been on a bike ride earlier and we would sit and listen as he went into great detail. The fact that he was 99 and the bike rides were from his youth (he used to do long distant road races) didn't matter. He was happy and safe. My wife's sister would tell him not to be silly and he couldn't have been out at his age. When we saw him we would laugh with him, that she was mistaken. Sadly he passed away a few years ago 12 days before Christmas day, his 100th.
I'm a caregiver for my mother who has dementia. I saved this image, it will be helpful to me. I've been doing some of these things but I have to remember to distract her when needed. I sometimes forget she can't remember things because it's early stage dementia. But I'm trying to be soft with her instead of being frustrated.
Sending a hug {{}} It's emotionally and physically draining to be a caregiver, just remember you're doing better than you think you are and she loves you more than you know or you wouldn't be she trusts
Load More Replies...I had a brief encounter with lucid hallucination/confusion when I was in ICU, and it's a scary feeling when no one understands something that seems obvious to you. I was convinced there was a tunnel under my hospital bed that I had been using to travel to my mum's house. I tried to tell the nurse, she said it was a hallucination (I genuinely thought she meant SHE could see it too but was saying it wasn't real), then my sister arrived and I told her, I didn't understand why she didn't know what I meant, or why she looked scared. Luckily when my dad arrived a few mins later, and I told him (saying "didn't mum tell you she built the tunnel?"), he just rolled with it and said "Oh I haven't had a chance to ask mum yet, but I will ask her when I see her." As soon as he said that I relaxed, and soon forgot about it (my memory of that particular hallucination ends there, but when I was well again I asked dad if that convo really happened and it did). He didn't have to 'buy into' my hallucination, just not contradict what I was sure was real, and distract/divert me
Mom has alzheimers, and drives me nuts, and everytime i'm going to explode I say to myself "not her fault... not her fault". Believe me, worked for me. Also, "Is better to be kind than to be right" It doesn't matter if she complains about the -insert item- that someone broke, even thou SHE broke it. just say i'm sorry, would never happen again and gonna replace it, and keep her calm about it.
It's really tough to deal with isn't it. Lots of "counting to 10"..
Load More Replies...My grandma has dementia and I always try to remind myself of these when talking with her, but it gets so hard sometimes when all she does is talk down to me. It's not something that came with her dementia, she's been doing it for years before it and did the same to my mother when she was a kid.
Oof, that's double as hard to do lightbulb. Bless you for visiting even if she's not the kindest. You are an angel, don't forget that!
Load More Replies...I'm caring for my Mother who has dementia, I've come to these conclusions myself and can confirm they're good advice. For instance, I hand Mum her toothbrush with paste on, 9 times out of 10 she'll say "I've already done this". NEVER DISAGREE. Leave her with the brush, talk about something else - eventually she'll do it. Plus if on rare occasions she doesn't, who cares? I'd rather she was happy than perfectly clean. She hoards things, like cutlery, don't demand it back. I go in her room when she's not there and take some back, not all. Pets are a great distraction, our cat is a life saver. Keep it light, make them laugh whenever you can. If they're embarrassed or upset because they've messed up or forgotten something, make a big deal and comedy about how you've done the same until it's all a joke about how dumb are we? Nicola
I took care of an Alzheimer patient for 6 months, and I wish I had this guide when I started.
Dana Jandhyala, who has had a long career as an educator where she has taught in different schools and institutes, believes that visuals hold more appeal than plain text to curious and intuitive minds.
"Till date, several studies have been conducted which prove the power of visual aids in eLearning," she wrote. "And there are some interesting results drawn from them. Such as, learners respond to visual information faster as compared to text-only materials. Also, visuals help improve learning tremendously and on multiple levels. Hence, around 65% of the population comprises visual learners."
This Library Hung A Dewey Decimal Reference Sign For “Everything You Want To Know, But Don’t Really Want To Ask”
That really made my day, just love this - especially the sentence at the bottom. 🙏
I love this so much. I almost teared up reading through all the topics. This could save lives.
You can do a screen shot and keep this if you like. The Dewey Decimal system is the same everywhere.
I'm a librarian. This list needs Gender Identity added to it. Otherwise, excellent and available in many libraries because our job is to identify and share accurate information.
Simple Trick For Calculating Percentage
I usually think of what 10% would be and then multiply it in my head. So 30% off an $80 dress would be 10% (8) x 3 = $24 off. Weird how our brains all come up with our own math coping mechanisms.
I will forever bet at a loss when it comes to numbers. Waaaaay back in elementary school, they began teaching time (round clock face) and coins (making change). For the life of me I could not figure out how 15 after could also be a quarter after, especially since a quarter was always 25, not 15. My poor brain cells for numbers were nuked out of my head. It’s been empty ever since
I feel for the scientist but honestly, it's the way of explanation. Many people were taught what I call the wrong way to learn how to use numbers. Simplified (which this is) with an example that is also very simple is the best way. The old math textbooks were written ....poorly.
So, to figure an 18% tip on a $73.56 restaurant bill, you could just calculate 73.56% of $18. Wow, much easier.
$73.56 x .18=$13.24. Flip it and modify slightly to get 18 x .75 =$13.50. The latter equation was done in my head and the difference of 26 cents really doesn't seem like that big a deal to me.
Load More Replies...I love it! I'm 65 and could have used this all my life. Why wasn't this simple factoid taught in school?
Jandhyala said there are several advantages of visual aids:
They help store information longer. "Images are the simplest and the most effective way to make sure that the information gets stored as long-term memory. As per Dr. Lynell Burmark, an education consultant, our short term memory processes words and can only retain about seven bits of information. Whereas, images are directly processed by our long-term memory, where they get indelibly etched."
They make communication quicker and simpler. "Information listed in bullets is no doubt simpler to process. But, that same information in the form of an image or a video is processed even more quickly."
As per the Visual Teaching Alliance:
- Of all the information transmitted to the brain, 90% is visual;
- As opposed to text, visuals are processed 60,000x faster;
- Humans are capable of getting the sense of a visual scene in less than 1/10th of a second;
- 40% of nerve fibers are linked to the retina;
- Our brain can see images that last for only 13 milliseconds;
- The human eye can register 36,000 visual messages every hour;
- Hence, the eLearning programs which incorporate suitable visuals gain a higher preference over.
A Bee’s Life
The winter bees are longer alive as they have to survive the winter to restart the hive
Load More Replies...Exactly. By a combined effort, they are able to kill an Asian giant hornet (which is, BTW, an angry little s hit. No argument or discussion, it flipping is), by surrounding it and vibrating their wings to increase temperature, which bees can tolerate, but Asian giant hornets can't.
Load More Replies...Sorry for swearing, but it's appropriate. I F UCKIN LOVE BEES!!! I carried around a small vial with a mixture of sugar/water, to revive any bee that I came across that was tired. Sadly, I see less and less of them now.
We had an injured bee in our garden last summer, my wife out out a plate of sugar water and placed the bee on the edge, it drank the water and after a short time, flew away.
Load More Replies...The older ones get the higher risk jobs, like sending Grandma off to guard the bank :)
Yup,. The most dangerous job is water collection. Only the oldest bee are doing it

We've had our guy for 6 months and he is *just* starting to settle in. Got him from the SPCA who caught someone with 88 dogs in a trailer.
Load More Replies...The small print is important: every dog is different. The dog we have now settled right away and bonded easily. Our last dog stayed reserved and slightly skittish for the two years we had him. It all comes down to individual, history and breed. The rule I heard is " after 6 month the dog should be his true self"-this is too one-size-fits-all too, but it shows you should expect a process and adapt.
I agree. 7 years and still learning my little boy. Those that have been through a lot can take a very long time. Though he's shoving his nose into my lap and clearly wants my attention!!
Load More Replies...My pup was homeless for her first year of life (luckily she had her brother with her) and it shocked me how extremely comfortable she got with me within the day. I adopted her in the morning and by afternoon she wouldn't stop laying in my lap (and she's a big dog too). Shows me how resilient dogs (or any animal) can be
Some dogs 'love bomb' because showing affection is the only way they have of pleasing a human. They do it to try and make themselves wanted, lovable. The 'please keep me, I'm a good dog' of behaviour. Not saying that is what your dog did and I love your story but it isn't always resilience. Sometimes it is fear wearing a very different coat.
Load More Replies...First thing to do with ANY new dog, no matter the circumstances of its past, take it for a walk around the neighborhood. Leash walking helps establish you as the boss, this can calm a dog down because it knows someone is taking care of things just like a mom dog would. It’s super important.
No. Sorry, but that's not true for every new dog! I know dogs that are so scared, they couldn't process walking around the neighborhood at all, not to mention understanding anything about "boss-thoughts humans have". If your dog is healthy and has a happy, carefree personality - fine, you can do that. If it's a scared, new arrival, the less new stuff it will be confronted with the better. First: house/garden (fenced in!!!!!!! Like... every hole locked tight). Never without an escape-proof harness OR harness+collar, if really scared never take off the leash until dog is truly settled. Pee/poop in the garden. Nothing more. Home must feel like home, home must feel SAFE before you can take the dog for a walk. (also, the last thing a truly scared/panicky dog is worried about is "who is boss". If it bites you, certainly not because it wants to be the boss but because it's f ucking SCARED!)
Load More Replies...My adopted dog leapt straight to stage 3, but I think he probably went through stage 1 & 2 at the Bide-a-Wee. (He was so happy to be adopted!!!)
Mine too! He acted like we were his family the second we first met him. He was crawling all over our laps and bringing his toys to us and everything. That being said tho, he peed everywhere for like months after we got him to try and claim the house lol
Load More Replies...Some behaviors take years to disappear though. One day I got home and there was an injured dog at my door, I took her to the vet and despite hoping to get her adopted I ended up keeping her, she was probably treated badly and at the minimum reprimand she would pee, it made training very difficult... and it took years for her to stop doing that
Thank you for not giving up on her! You are a good soul.
Load More Replies...This is so true! My rescue was afraid to get back in the car. But I was trying to take him to the park, or on a hike, or just any where we could have fun. My first would come, and I think after about 3 weeks of seeing Roamer always came back tired and happy, he finally decided to go, with lots of encouragement from me. Breaks my heart to think that he thought I was taking him back to the shelter.

Load More Replies...I am amazed I have feet after spending my entire childhood barefoot in Florida. I burnt the heck out of my feet and got stuck in so many pricker patches and I never learned. Remember my sister or I just screaming at the one who hadn't made it to the pavement or pricker patch yet to stay back and return home to grab shoes.
THIS IS VERY MISLEADING!!!!!! I hate seeing signs like this because people think it's set in stone and it's NOT. This entire sign needs to JUST be, "If it's too hot for your bare hands it's too hot for their paws". That's all it should say. Asphalt gets hot by absorbing the radiant heat from the sun DIRECTLY. The ambient air temperature has very little to do with the temperature of the asphalt when that asphalt is being bombarded by the sun. For example, if it's a very cloudy day, and it's 77 degrees out, the asphalt WILL NOT BE 125 degrees. It will be a lot closer to 77. They are overcomplicating this. It just needs to say what I said earlier, or something similar.
Tucson Arizona resident here... ( super hot for 6 months a year) We test the concrete by putting the BACK of your hand on the surface for ten seconds.... if it's too hot for you to do that comfortably, it's too hot for paws. ( yes, very challenging to keep dogs exercising through our summer...because we also have to deal with coyotes and bobcats who are typically active in the early morning, when concrete is most cool)
Visuals aid better comprehension. "They help learners grasp concepts easily by stimulating imagination and affecting their cognitive capabilities. Besides, the visual language is also known to have the potential to stretch 'human bandwidth' – which comprises absorbing, comprehending and analyzing new information."
Visuals act as stimulators for emotions. "Emotions and visual information are processed in the same part of the human brain. Visual stimuli and emotional response are linked in a simple way and these two together generate what we call memories. Hence, powerful images and visual metaphors create strong impressions and lasting memories in learners."
They drive motivation. "Most of the students struggle with some of their subjects because they find them uninteresting and hence lack the motivation to put in the required efforts. Visuals are the best bet in such scenarios. Captivating images, engaging videos, interesting infographics, etc. help learners fight the boredom and motivate them to do better."
So it very well might be that the things you'll learn from these guides will stay with you. At least for a little while.

Load More Replies...The only ones that really bother me, which ironically were not mentioned here, are the "stick family" ones that yell, "Hey! We have four daughters and a baby boy! Are you obsessed with kids? Follow us to the park and oogle ours!"
I rarely see cars with any stickers so I don't see the point of that.
I can only guess you don't live in the US. The cars here are covered in stickers that reflect the owner's likes and life.

Load More Replies...Why do the Americans show off their kids school achievements? We have no need to do that in Britain
Americans don’t tend to support their children, but they will brag about them as if that’s some kind of support. Also, it’s the schools selling stickers, because they bought them, because some company selling them told them they needed to buy them, and maybe some company rep was astroturfing at school board meetings... Hyper-capitalism in the USA drives a lot of things people think is just culture.
Load More Replies...If nothing else, bumper stickers put your info on a static (when you're away) object. If someone doesn't like your bumper sticker (because they dislike that politican/policy/law/event/viewpoint/religion/organization/etc) they may just choose to vandalize your car because they disagree with it. In essence, I agree that bumper stickers can lead to negative consequences and tell people too much about you.
this is just paranoia imo. Would be criminals driving around on the road aren't smart/invested enough to deduce all of that while going down the highway or parked at Walmart and plan to rob you accordingly. Those that are I'd guess are super rare and it isn't worth bending over backwards in the off-chance you meet that statistically unlikely outcome. Over and over we hear that robbers check if doors are locked then keep it moving. Just lock your doors.
You are missing the burglars that walk streets and look at parked cars outside people's homes. They frequently eye up properties and would happily use information slapped all over a car. My sister came home to burglars once. She'd changed her weekly routine because her husband was in hospital so she was home unexpectedly early. Smart burglars learn what you do.

....and yet minimum wage is still $7.25/hr in the US, and employers complain "no one wants to work."
Please correct me if I'm wrong (sincerely), but at least in my area minimum wage is irrelevant. Everyone is paying at least $11-12 to start. Not saying that's livable, but I don't think anyone is trying to offer $7.25

Different Street Light Designs To Minimize Light Pollution
Yes! Direct the light to where it's needed. This doesn't just impede views of the night sky - poorly thought out infrastructure can put streetlights directly outside bedroom windows and blackout blinds can be expensive.
Omg yes, light pollution needs to be more widely taught about in schools.
And if the lights are red LED then it's even better. Especially for wildlife.
Yes, living an area with lots of fog/rain/snow I much prefer the old sodium lights over the newer white/blue LED's that are being "upgraded" Deep amber is best in these conditions
Load More Replies...HA!! Our subdivision was built without any street lights going in. Not one. The people of the area demanded to be able to see the night sky. They also made the developers put utility lines underground. It is a wonderful place to be and NO, there has not been any uptick in crimes
Unfortunately, the type of lamp at the right is usually much more expensive compared to the left. The bulb might be much cheaper but exchanging the old lamps out is far too costly for most neighborhoods.
This. I'd dearly love for the streetlights in my neighborhood to be both directed & dimmed, but the city has deferred the work for lack of funds.
Load More Replies...In my town we have a hybrid between number three and number four: light so weak that it hardly reaches the ground and it is pointed downwards. So it is so dark in the street that you cannot see where you are going, only standing directly under the lamp shows you about two meters of the drive lane. The lamps are about 50 meters apart. Pedestrians have no chance.

It really is! I used most of them at least a few times, but I can say that the free alternatives often lacks crucial features, or are cumbersome to use. I don't say they're bad at all, but sometimes they're not completely interchangeable (depending on your use case). And considering the paid applications here are so damn expensive, it could be helpful to add some "paid but not that expensive" alternatives - e. g. Affinity designer (illustrator).

Tips For Police Encounters
Where's the educational flier for the police? 1. Do not violate a person's civil rights. 2. ....
because they rely on lack of knowledge to gain entry and information to secure a conviction. The entire legal system is looking for who to blame, they actually care little about you personally.
Load More Replies...You have a right to remain silent. It’s ALWAYS BEST to exercise that right, ALWAYS! If you are stopped by a law enforcement officer, take into consideration they get shot at and they want to feel safe, you can lower their heightened level of concern by just doing a couple of things. Always keep your hands in view. If you need to get something like an ID or paper, say what you want to do before you do it. Pull your car into a well lighted area. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, you may not get an answer but it’s worth trying. Try to calm yourself, talk slowly, be specific. And remember, not all cops are jerks, they are human beings just like you.
LOL...oh Mazer...this is wonderful advice, but does NOT work for everyone...especially in America, sadly. Sometimes, there is no "lowering their heightened level of concern"...since for many, their "concern" is that they are in front of a Black male. Nothing more. I have personally witnessed some of the most respectful, polite interactions with cops that do NOT end well for the driver...because they STILL insist on removing from the car, patting down, searching, interrogating...no matter how much in view your hands are or what you tell them you are going to do. They are human, you are correct...and that sadly comes with their human biases and prejudices, too. This may work fine for some...but not for all of us. Not all Americans are treated the same by police.
Load More Replies...I would never say ANYTHING on this card. I can worry about my rights later. In the moment, I'm trying to not get hurt or murdered by the police. Gotta love being a person of color in the US.
Load More Replies...Just some more tips to this that will help everyone: For 1. A cop may tell you "No" and are not free to leave. This doesn't mean they are violating your rights, but you may be held for investigative purposes. 2. This means a cop cannot search without your consent, however cops can still search by the following: getting a warrant, may have seen something in plain view that is illegal, dog alerted to something on in your car and now can search, search after getting to arrested, or if it is not your property and its someone else's, they give consent (ie. car). 3. This means an officer should not ask you any questions related to the crime without your lawyer present, but they can still ask you questions in reference to anything else not related to the crime.
If you're not being detained, then you're free to go. If you are detained, then they can only detain you for a "reasonable time" without arresting you. Cops will absolutely ask you questions about the crime even if you don't have a lawyer present, it's up to you to not answer any questions. Don't even answer questions that are seemingly innocent "Did you watch the game last night", may just be a leading question to find out where you were.
Load More Replies...And for the love of god, keep your hands visible. If you need to reach for your ID say "My ID is in my pocket/purse, may I reach for it?" And don't call them names.
And never ever take any field tests for a DUI, all that will be used against you. You don't have to tell them where you are coming from or where you are going, just say I respectfully decline to answer your questions. You will probably get arrested, but great chance of getting it dismissed due to no evidence.

This what millions of antivaxers are experiencing right now. They feel informed because they did internet research. Or because they are a nurse. Or because they know someone who backs up their opinion. They don't even know how much they don't know. To me, the scariest part of being in the US right now is how willing people are to take their opinion as a fact and use groupthink as a form of confirmation. Thousands of people who studied the subject for 8 years and currently work in the field are saying one thing while the other side has Timmy, the YouTube video maker talking to a guy that used to work at company and got fired is saying another. And somehow the thought process is the video is right. That is scary
I doubt I have ever gone from hunh to I know everything. Is that a thing?? How is that realistic?
Within science I learned that all truth is subjective to time & perspective. Even after 30 yrs of active research I hardly scratched the surface of the discipline I work within and it is contineously subjective to change.
Interesting Visual About Genetic Similarities
Well, let's face it, there are many times we feel like mushrooms. Kept in the dark and fed s**t!
Any particular species of fish can be closer in relation to humans than to another species of fish. Always found this interesting, it challenges our perceptions, fish didn't just evolve into land animals, they continued to evolve into different types of fish too.
As I understand it, only lobed fish are arguably closer to humans. All ray fins are closer to each other (and ray fins are the vast majority of fish).
Load More Replies...I find it vaguely reassuring that I’m more closely related to mushrooms than to plants.
Apparently you're not. Mushrooms are closer to humans than plants sharing 50% of human's dna. But plants like the bananas have 60% dna in common with humans.
Load More Replies...Because it's not EXACTLY entirely true. Toucans, crocodiles and most lizards all evolved from a reptile that you'd probably consider to be a "lizard" if you saw it. Toucans and crocodiles have a common ancestor that is more recent than this "lizard," and a little less like "lizards." Birds, you see, are descendents of "dinosaurs," which means "terrible lizards." However, the term "lizard" is now considered formally correct only when applied to members of a group of reptiles called, "squamates," and not dinosaurs, but even this identification is still not scientifically accurate because "squamata" includes snakes, which also have a more recent common ancestor to some lizards than those lizards have to other lizards.
Load More Replies...Most of these are great examples and this doesn't apply to them, but: Around twenty years ago, the notion of grouping organisms around most recent common ancestors really cemented as genetics made it rather fool-proof. The problem is that some organisms remain virtually unchanged for hundreds of millions of years, while others rapidly change. So a modern coelocanth which is virtually identical to a 300-million-year-old coelocanth may be "no closer" to its ancestor than you are to some 300-million-year-old amphibian. As such, "reptiles" like lizards and crocodiles are "further" from each other than some repitiles are from birds which evolved "from" reptiles.(This is not true for mammals, which evolved from a branch of the "reptile" class which has no other living representatives.)
As in, 'shared a common ancestor more recently in time'

How Taxes Work
That is actually really useful. Although I assume the brackets differ between countries.
they do, but the general idea is the same everywhere as far as I know (Europe/US - I do not know anything outside that)
Load More Replies...If you live in the US, and you make several millions of dollars a year or more, you actually move into the 0% tax loophole bracket. 🙄
This is the UK tax system. It is a little more complicated than that as we also have something called National Insurance, which has a lower and upper limit. It main affects those in the 20% band and adds 12% tax, which means that the base rate of tax is about 1/3 and the transition to 40% is not quite as severe. Bands like this a reasonably fair, as there is no big penalty for moving from one band to the next. We also have something called Stamp Duty that is paid when buying property and this has thresholds which affect the rate you pay - this used to be on the WHOLE amount, so say the threshold was £100k, and the rate was 1%, on a £99k house you'd pay nothing, on a £101k house you'd pay £1,010 - thankfully this now seems to have been abolished and it is now done the same way as income tax.
Just remember, National Insurance is calculated but not deducted before tax. So the NI amount is still in the amount that has Income Tax deducted, before it its self is deducted. Basically NI is a tax which is also taxed.
Load More Replies...My dad still doesn't understand this. And as far as my opinion goes, it's a good system.
Marginal rates are greatly misunderstood in American politics. Sometimes deliberately to make tax proposals falsely seem confiscatory. Yes Mr. Hannity, I'm talking about you!
It's missing National Insurance, which is another 12% tax (currently) applied between £9,500 and £50,000, and 2% above £50,000. So your £100k generates £33,400 in tax.

Load More Replies...25 is considered nice warm weather where I am, and I personally find anything above 16 odd degrees too much heat to handle 🤦♀️ I prefer being too cold than too hot, I can't cope with the latter
Load More Replies...This does not take into consideration humidity. My friends son learned the hard way that a Colorado 42 degrees is much easier for our bodies to handle than 56 degrees at the Golden Gate Bridge near sunset in the summer. I tried to warn him, but he refused to heed my warnings, said he would be fine in his t-shirt and jeans. Heck we were fifteen minutes drive inland where it was in the mid 70’s. It took all of five minutes for his face to turn blue and his chin to begin to quiver (I put some sweatshirts in the car before we left). Humidity and a bit of a breeze can make a person feel naked even when eating three layers of clothing, where up in the mountains where the humidity is really low, walking around in 40 degree weather in blue jeans and a t-shirt is no big deal
British Columbia in Canada got to 49.6 this summer. So 50 doesn't only happen in the desert.

This is all hypothetical. There’s some evidence for some of it but it’s unproven and therefore not all factual. As soon as you see people talking about serotonin and mood, immediately turn on your critical thinking and researching mindset. There has literally been disinformation about depression and serotonin produced and disseminated by pharmaceutical companies to promote their unproven hypothesis about depression (the “chemical imbalance” hypothesis has failed scientific rigor so many times that it’s finally been getting pushback and the claim is being pushed less and less). Just because you’ve heard it promoted for decades, including by doctors and pop-sci news articles, does not mean it is a fact. The actual studies are harder reads and result in way less absolutism. Doctors get so much pseudo-science nonsense thrown at them by pharmaceutical companies. Most doctors aren’t scientists. Most doctors don’t keep up on the literature in the MANY fields they tend to advise patients on.

Plant Watering Guide
Not true. It depends on the type of plant. If it's a deciduous plant, you risk drowning it with overwater / waterlogging. Similarly if it is a succulent. You need to look at the leaf type to determine how much water to provide. Assuming a pot plant: waxy leaves, thicker than paper: 1 cup every three days papery thin leaves, dry/papery surface: ½ cup every two days or ¼ cup every day thick fleshy leaves: ½ cup once a week etc.
It's pretty difficult to overwater a plant with one deep watering, and succulents should be watered thoroughly until the water seeps through the drainage hole. It's the frequency they need water that's different, not the amount of water each time.
Load More Replies...so much nope... it depends on so many factors, is it an indoor or outdoor plant, how many hrs of sun does it receive, what type of plant, what size of plant, what size of pot, season, type of soil, etc. For example if that plant is an indoor plant that pot is simply too big, even if the soil is very draining it can easily rot.
My mom used to have a lot of African violets and those were in pots designed to be watered from the bottom.
A plant should always be watered one of 2 ways - Water to drainage, it is important to fully wet all the soil, but to also flush out extra salts and minerals. Some plants are very picky and need to be watered from the bottom, sitting in a dish of water and allowing the soil to absorb from the bottom until the pot is heavy.
I have orchids, they're infrequent light watering. Both of these in the poster would kill an orchid.
This is true for lawns..... yet our city only lets us water for 10 mins at a time per area hahahahaha..... unless hand watering

The Amount Of Snow It Takes To Cancel School By County
I hate PE outdoors when it's 90F or higher so much.
Load More Replies...This is way off. I lived in northern Minnesota and we had several feet of snow on the ground and still went to school. I'm in the Ozarks and guess what, school is still open when there is snow. Those insulting based on this graph, grow up, it's not right. Not only that, if you're used to driving on snow and have a good DOT to take care of the roads then travel isn't rough. If you're not then everyone is screwed.
This is also a chart that shows who does and doesn't get snow regularly
We are listed as "any snow" which actually means there is no set policy. The bus drivers drive their routes and report back to the school if it can be done safely with all kids and a determination is made based on that, not the actual snow amount that fell. We have many back roads and lanes that do not get worked by crews (rural area) so different types of snowfall/ice events affect things differently.
I had a coworker tell me that because I can’t drive in snow (I’m from Los Angeles) that I don’t really know how to drive. So I asked him if he could drive a stick shift (he can’t; I can) and explained that perhaps *he* is the one who doesn’t really know how to drive.
Exactly. Why would you try driving in snow if you have never driven in snow? If you can safely learn then do it. But otherwise stay home and stay safe!
Load More Replies...Again, in Texas when it snows it is preceded by rain and freezing temps. Black Ice forms on bridges and overpasses, cover that with a "light dusting" of snow and you have HORRIBLE crashes. Do you really want a bus full of children on their way to school crashing because some ass doesn't know how to drive on Texas roads when it snows?
Yall this is so true though. I have a friend who just moved from Illinois and we live as far south Alabama as you can get. It got a little cool the other day and we were talking about how everyone was in long sleeves and he was in shorts and a t-shirt. He said they would still walk to school in like 3 or 4-inch snow, meanwhile, down here we canceled school for even the chance of snow. Because if there's a chance these children can play in some snow we are not gonna be at school😂
Ok so now I know that it takes 6” of snow to cancel school in my area. Time to go manipulate the weather.

They also receive more federal tax dollars for unemployment, welfare, wic, medicaid and drug addiction costs than they pay. Estimated Caffeine By Type Of Drink!
The last one isn't tea. It must be some sort of herbal infusion "tea". Real tea from Camellia sinensis has no caffeine only if it's decaffeinated.
I'm fairly sure they meant infusion with that one. It's simply called "Tee" as well in German for example, so maybe the author wasn't natively English speaking and used/translated the word which was common to them

In what volume? Per serving? What's a serving size then? They could've used the same cup for every single one... Or give the volumes! Comparing an espresso to a cup of tea is useless - it can make you think that a cup full of espresso still has 70mg of caffeine (it's not unreasonable to assume some people will think that). And why it there green tea, black tea and... tea? Just tea?
Wait, what do they mean by 'tea' with 0mg of caffeine? Do they mean red bush tea?
lol what is "tea"? Rooibos? Herbal tea? Those aren't even actual teas.

Best sugars are one of the most sprayed by chemicals plant food source in the world, and impacts of some of the food products we don’t even notice in our food are rapidly negatively impacting local habitats, like coconut and palms wiping out native forests which once supported the orangutans. I wish Alexander Von Humboldt messages about the negative impacts on the environment by the way we choose to farm was recognized and implemented by more people. So sad

I have a feeling this whole graph should be the other way round- hospital services in the more affordable part- but I guess that this is the world-
So what everyone needs (healthcare, education) went up, what no-one needs (toys, television) went down. Nice.
Be interested to see if "Hospital Services" equates to HMO's, rather than the actual cost of medical things and that, despite the increasing cost, the number of services covered is decreasing.
So the essentials became out of reach expensive for more than half the population and television and the internet became accessible?

Are Your Eggs Still Fresh? Or, “How To Know How Old Those New Eggs You Just Bought Really Are”
I hate this chart so much. An egg that floats is not necessarily "gone bad and should not be eaten", it just says it's a bit older and you shouldn't use it for mayonnaise or a soft boiled egg. Assuming it doesn't smell bad, you can still easily use it for recipes where it's cooked to the full extent.
In America where they don't vaccinate their chickens for salmonella (like Red Lion eggs in the UK), I wouldn't risk it. If in doubt, throw it out.
Load More Replies...It is extremely hard to peel frsh eggs that have been hard boiled. There is a membrane between the eggwhite and the shell. It needs to break down before you try to hard boil them. Usually grocery store bought eggs can be used. It takes long enough to get from the farm to the store shelves.
Best way to made hard boiled eggs is to not expose them to sudden temperature changes, start by eggs being at room temp, cover with tepid water, bring water to roiling boil, immediately shut of heat source, leave on burner and cover for 8 minutes. Remove, lay on towel let cool to room temp. No sulfur smell, easy to peel

Oh, man, I've done this with my kids for years. Taking responsibility for your part in an argument is a learned skill. And making sure we say - next time I WILL. Instead of next time I WON'T. Saying "next time I won't yell at you," does no good. What will you do next time instead of yelling? My other favorite is using the "I feel ____ because I _____." Not "You're a jerk because you blabbed my secret." That just continues the fight. Instead "I feel betrayed because I expected you to keep my secret." Now we have something we can actually work on.
You may not be wrong in what you said but you can still be wrong in the way you said it.

Exactly. There's a difference between enjoying organizing and sorting, and organizing and sorting because anything out of align brings you real distress and you can't bring yourself to think of anything else, and it's so constant it takes up your life when you just want to be doing something else. The person reorganizing a store shelf display calmly is not someone with OCD. A person reorganizing a store shelf, and moving on to another store shelf, looking around panicked and upset, maybe having a real OCD moment and is embarrassed/feeling shame.

Progression Of Palestinian Land Loss Since 1947. It Isn't Just Two Countries With A Border
The story is too complex to be summarized (left alone understood) with a single image of a truncated time-frame. Just do the same with "German Loss of Land 1944 to Present". If you don't get the full picture, and not the cultural and historical involvements, you cannot have an enlightened opinion.
Land was lost because of wars that were started by the surrounding Arab countries. It's a difficult situation that is not as black & white as people like to think.
So . . . . . if every time a neighbour of the USA (say) started a war then it would be okay for the USA to lose part of its territory, would it? If Canada fought Iceland then it would be appropriate for Canada to afterwards annex Michigan? And anyway . . . . . there weren't THAT many wars
Load More Replies...From 1949 to 1967 there were no Palestine as a country in the west bank or in the Gaza strip. Former were part of Kingdom of Jordan and latter part of Egypt.
Palestine is a country notorious for abusing human rights, extreme corruption, sponsoring terrorism, denying human rights, denying LGBT rights. Every bit of land they lose in conflicts that they start is a blessing.

I like how the bottom one is a guide to taking photos of your food at any time of the day. #instagroin #nobodycares
The aperture controls how much light passes through the lens and sets the depth of field. The depth of field is how far in front or behind the object things are in focus. The ISO determines how sensitive the film or sensor are to light. A low ISO number means that the film or sensor take longer to absorb the light, but the picture quality is clean with no noise (smooth). A high ISO means the sensor or film will absorb light faster but the picture will be very noisy (grainy). For wildlife and portrait photography you will usually use a small F stop (big aperture) and a low ISO of up to around 400 depending on ambient light. This will give good quality photograph with little noise and the object will be in sharp focus with a blurred background and foreground. For action shots a larger F stop (small aperture) and high ISO usually 1600 or higher is used. This allows for a faster shutter speed that will freeze the action and reduce motion blur. These are just general guides though.

Types Of Knife And Their Uses
This isn't exactly right. "Santoku" literally translates to "three virtues"- it's a multipurpose knife, and the name is often understood to mean that it can be used for vegetables, meat, and fish. Basically, all I actually use on a daily basis in my kitchen is a santoku and a matching petty knife made by the same Japanese blacksmith, and a cheapo bread knife from Tesco. I always suggest to people that instead of buying a moderately priced knife set with all the bells and whistles, they should invest in just one high-quality, well-made santoku. If you care for it right, it'll last you a lifetime, and it can do literally 99% of what needs to be done in an average home kitchen.

32 Products And Services With The Highest Markup
How do you figure? Every retail store marks up goods to pay for employee salary, rent, insurance, etc
Load More Replies...Some of these are not very informational, as you can not compare the price of ingredients or components to a finished product. So maybe I'll save $$ by buying my new phone piece by piece. But then I have jus that: phone pieces. Not to mention the cost of ordering it from various places..
These kind of charts are not providing the whole picture. A product isn't just the cost of manufacture. It's also logistics, research, expertise and storage. For example perishables like food need to be stored in a certain way, and that factors into the costs. A large item that takes up inventory space is also a hidden cost. A good cake may use pretty ordinary ingredients but the bakers' expertise makes a world of difference. Sure there are scammy business practices but one should not just conclude based on cost of producing the item alone.
The high mark up on prescription brand name drugs is NOT by the drug companies, it is, as for all prescription drugs, a function of the drug store. I used to only buy brand name NEVER generic because I was concerned about quality control. If it is made in China, I won't even consider it. But my scripts went from 400 bucks a fill to 4000 bucks a refill. The drug company had NOT raised prices, but the drugstore had. And that WAS at Costco.
£4000... ouch!! I was taking a brand name prescription drug but it was changed, due to costs, to a generic. Told it was the same. It was going (apologies for tmi) straight through... same my a**e! Wasn't made in China though.

What It Takes To Move 50 People
except a bus doesn't show up when you need it, runs on a specific schedule, follows a specific route rather than dropping you exactly where you need to be, is slow, is only found in city centres or on long haul, and spreads covid more easily.
The only positive thing about cars is their convenience. Collectively, they create so much pollution, use so many resources to make them, are the sole reason for traffic jams and they increase the risk of road accidents. Also, covid didn't start spreading till less than 2 years ago, so that's not a valid argument.
Load More Replies...you take the bus when you see advantage. one place i used to work i had a bus stop close to home and one close to the job. i took that bus during that time, i'm not stupid. where i work now i'd have to wake up 30min earlier and took a 45min bus drive when i could take a 20min car drive and get up 30min late... and don't start about going to my kids soccer pratice at 6pm.
Whenever I used to take the bus, I'd always have some druggie or drunkard start talking to me. Had one guy follow me home. So, I'm sorry about the extra emissions and all but screw the bus.
Sounds more like it's a social problem in the area where you live or travel to. For some reason, people think all these drunks and addicts live on the bus. Drivers get the same issues in my city when they're at an intersection. I've seen 2 scraggly guys approach a car at a light with one guy at the driver's window and the other leaning on the front of the hood. Poor driver couldn't even move his car to go around.
Load More Replies...EU car occupancy rates average around 1.3, so 50 people = 38 cars roughly. But occupancy rates vary strongly by time and line and city. Given the problem is only really pressing for cities at peak times, it's fair to put the car occupancy around 1.2 (40 cars), and the single deck bus with 50 passengers (out of 80--90) is relatively low. POST COVID... bus capacity very low though.
In my daily driving I rarely see cars with more than one person onboard. 60% driver only. 30% driver plus one. 10% driver plus two/three.

I was good with catching on math: decimals, counting change, multiplication, division, in grade 3. In grade 4 we, of course, get a different teacher and she wants to do a refresher. Same. It's like you can try to learn it a dozen times over but you can't remember or comprehend all the steps. There's no visual diagram to show you what those numbers represent and how it looks like ..... but I just thought of a solution.
Load More Replies...This is such a long way to do it, 5 into 9 goes once, carry the remainder 4 next to the 2, 5 into 42 goes 8, carry the remainder 2 next to the 3, 5 into 23 goes 4 - ending up with 184r3.
This way of presenting it is not going to appeal to those who find Maths hard. Looking at this paper shows such a complicated mess of lines and numbers that it's off-putting. A quicker and tidier way is to write a little 4 before the 2 (42), then a 2 before the 3 (23) as you're working them out.

Metric Conversions
The arrows are the wrong way round for the metric table. 1 km divided by thousand gives you one metre.
What the table does is teach you how to convert a specific distance from kilometers to meters etc. So if you have 1 kilometer you multiply with thousand to get the distance in meters and so forth. 1 kilometer then representing 1.000.000 mm. ;)
