Whether we're talking about politics or the animal kingdom, learning something new can require a fair amount of time and effort. Luckily, we don't always have to read lengthy scientific papers. Some people do it for us. And not only that — they narrow down everything to a few bullet points and illustrate them to help our minds remember.

And if you want a place that stores these effective tools, look no further than the subreddit r/CoolGuides. As the name suggests, it collects picture-based reference guides for pretty much anything and everything.

"If it seems like something someone might print, physically post, and reference then it is a good link for this sub," its moderators write in its 'About' section.

One night I was sitting on my front porch, but on the ground. I was on the edge so there was a bush to my right side. All of a sudden, a opossum came around the bush and looked at me as if to say, "what the hell are you doing out here so late?" I had never witnessed one up close and personal like that. After having 4 mini heart attacks, and of course paralyzed from fear, it just went along on it's way, not giving a crap about me. It was super cute irl too!

I had basically the same thing happen to me, except I was just on my porch. It's very low to the ground and only have 2 small cement steps with a large rose bush hugging them. When a healthy full grown opossum comes walking up to the porch as I'm sitting there smoking and just looks at me in surprise 😮and slowly continues on it's way. Idk what I expected but it was uneventful. I've often heard of hissing and growing from them, so it must not have felt threatened.

Believe it or not, these little wonders of nature eat dog s**t. Didn't know that until I lived in the city for bit. I couldn't figure out why I never had to clean up dog mess in the yard. I googled"disappearing dog s**t" and found a game cam video of a possum in a lady's back yard, cleaning up after her dog. Way cool.

I learned not to expect or force them to comply with your world, to be more effective, embrace more if their world. One guy found out that just by giving dementia patients iPods or Walkman’s programmed to play music from the patients younger days, they came alive. Find those memory triggers and use them for the good of the patients

Yes music, or let them taste things or smell. Senses can trigger. You can compare it with small childeren, they love to touch/taste/hear/feel/smell things, it keeps the brain functioning and can make people happy.

We used to visit my wife's dad in his nursing home. He would often tell us that he had been on a bike ride earlier and we would sit and listen as he went into great detail. The fact that he was 99 and the bike rides were from his youth (he used to do long distant road races) didn't matter. He was happy and safe. My wife's sister would tell him not to be silly and he couldn't have been out at his age. When we saw him we would laugh with him, that she was mistaken. Sadly he passed away a few years ago 12 days before Christmas day, his 100th.

I'm a caregiver for my mother who has dementia. I saved this image, it will be helpful to me. I've been doing some of these things but I have to remember to distract her when needed. I sometimes forget she can't remember things because it's early stage dementia. But I'm trying to be soft with her instead of being frustrated.

I had a brief encounter with lucid hallucination/confusion when I was in ICU, and it's a scary feeling when no one understands something that seems obvious to you. I was convinced there was a tunnel under my hospital bed that I had been using to travel to my mum's house. I tried to tell the nurse, she said it was a hallucination (I genuinely thought she meant SHE could see it too but was saying it wasn't real), then my sister arrived and I told her, I didn't understand why she didn't know what I meant, or why she looked scared. Luckily when my dad arrived a few mins later, and I told him (saying "didn't mum tell you she built the tunnel?"), he just rolled with it and said "Oh I haven't had a chance to ask mum yet, but I will ask her when I see her." As soon as he said that I relaxed, and soon forgot about it (my memory of that particular hallucination ends there, but when I was well again I asked dad if that convo really happened and it did). He didn't have to 'buy into' my hallucination, just not contradict what I was sure was real, and distract/divert me

Also, "Is better to be kind than to be right" It doesn't matter if she complains about the -insert item- that someone broke, even thou SHE broke it. just say i'm sorry, would never happen again and gonna replace it, and keep her calm about it.

I'm caring for my Mother who has dementia, I've come to these conclusions myself and can confirm they're good advice. For instance, I hand Mum her toothbrush with paste on, 9 times out of 10 she'll say "I've already done this". NEVER DISAGREE. Leave her with the brush, talk about something else - eventually she'll do it. Plus if on rare occasions she doesn't, who cares? I'd rather she was happy than perfectly clean. She hoards things, like cutlery, don't demand it back. I go in her room when she's not there and take some back, not all. Pets are a great distraction, our cat is a life saver. Keep it light, make them laugh whenever you can. If they're embarrassed or upset because they've messed up or forgotten something, make a big deal and comedy about how you've done the same until it's all a joke about how dumb are we? Nicola

Dana Jandhyala, who has had a long career as an educator where she has taught in different schools and institutes, believes that visuals hold more appeal than plain text to curious and intuitive minds.

"Till date, several studies have been conducted which prove the power of visual aids in eLearning," she wrote. "And there are some interesting results drawn from them. Such as, learners respond to visual information faster as compared to text-only materials. Also, visuals help improve learning tremendously and on multiple levels. Hence, around 65% of the population comprises visual learners."

I will forever bet at a loss when it comes to numbers. Waaaaay back in elementary school, they began teaching time (round clock face) and coins (making change). For the life of me I could not figure out how 15 after could also be a quarter after, especially since a quarter was always 25, not 15. My poor brain cells for numbers were nuked out of my head. It’s been empty ever since

I feel for the scientist but honestly, it's the way of explanation. Many people were taught what I call the wrong way to learn how to use numbers. Simplified (which this is) with an example that is also very simple is the best way. The old math textbooks were written ....poorly.

$73.56 x .18=$13.24. Flip it and modify slightly to get 18 x .75 =$13.50. The latter equation was done in my head and the difference of 26 cents really doesn't seem like that big a deal to me.

Jandhyala said there are several advantages of visual aids:

They help store information longer. "Images are the simplest and the most effective way to make sure that the information gets stored as long-term memory. As per Dr. Lynell Burmark, an education consultant, our short term memory processes words and can only retain about seven bits of information. Whereas, images are directly processed by our long-term memory, where they get indelibly etched."

They make communication quicker and simpler. "Information listed in bullets is no doubt simpler to process. But, that same information in the form of an image or a video is processed even more quickly."

As per the Visual Teaching Alliance:

    • Of all the information transmitted to the brain, 90% is visual;
    • As opposed to text, visuals are processed 60,000x faster;
    • Humans are capable of getting the sense of a visual scene in less than 1/10th of a second;
    • 40% of nerve fibers are linked to the retina;
    • Our brain can see images that last for only 13 milliseconds;
    • The human eye can register 36,000 visual messages every hour;
    • Hence, the eLearning programs which incorporate suitable visuals gain a higher preference over.

The small print is important: every dog is different. The dog we have now settled right away and bonded easily. Our last dog stayed reserved and slightly skittish for the two years we had him. It all comes down to individual, history and breed. The rule I heard is " after 6 month the dog should be his true self"-this is too one-size-fits-all too, but it shows you should expect a process and adapt.

Some dogs 'love bomb' because showing affection is the only way they have of pleasing a human. They do it to try and make themselves wanted, lovable. The 'please keep me, I'm a good dog' of behaviour. Not saying that is what your dog did and I love your story but it isn't always resilience. Sometimes it is fear wearing a very different coat.

First thing to do with ANY new dog, no matter the circumstances of its past, take it for a walk around the neighborhood. Leash walking helps establish you as the boss, this can calm a dog down because it knows someone is taking care of things just like a mom dog would. It’s super important.

    Marlowe Fitzpatrik
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

No. Sorry, but that's not true for every new dog! I know dogs that are so scared, they couldn't process walking around the neighborhood at all, not to mention understanding anything about "boss-thoughts humans have". If your dog is healthy and has a happy, carefree personality - fine, you can do that. If it's a scared, new arrival, the less new stuff it will be confronted with the better. First: house/garden (fenced in!!!!!!! Like... every hole locked tight). Never without an escape-proof harness OR harness+collar, if really scared never take off the leash until dog is truly settled. Pee/poop in the garden. Nothing more. Home must feel like home, home must feel SAFE before you can take the dog for a walk. (also, the last thing a truly scared/panicky dog is worried about is "who is boss". If it bites you, certainly not because it wants to be the boss but because it's f ucking SCARED!)

Some behaviors take years to disappear though. One day I got home and there was an injured dog at my door, I took her to the vet and despite hoping to get her adopted I ended up keeping her, she was probably treated badly and at the minimum reprimand she would pee, it made training very difficult... and it took years for her to stop doing that

This is so true! My rescue was afraid to get back in the car. But I was trying to take him to the park, or on a hike, or just any where we could have fun. My first would come, and I think after about 3 weeks of seeing Roamer always came back tired and happy, he finally decided to go, with lots of encouragement from me. Breaks my heart to think that he thought I was taking him back to the shelter.

I am amazed I have feet after spending my entire childhood barefoot in Florida. I burnt the heck out of my feet and got stuck in so many pricker patches and I never learned. Remember my sister or I just screaming at the one who hadn't made it to the pavement or pricker patch yet to stay back and return home to grab shoes.

THIS IS VERY MISLEADING!!!!!! I hate seeing signs like this because people think it's set in stone and it's NOT. This entire sign needs to JUST be, "If it's too hot for your bare hands it's too hot for their paws". That's all it should say. Asphalt gets hot by absorbing the radiant heat from the sun DIRECTLY. The ambient air temperature has very little to do with the temperature of the asphalt when that asphalt is being bombarded by the sun. For example, if it's a very cloudy day, and it's 77 degrees out, the asphalt WILL NOT BE 125 degrees. It will be a lot closer to 77. They are overcomplicating this. It just needs to say what I said earlier, or something similar.

Tucson Arizona resident here... ( super hot for 6 months a year) We test the concrete by putting the BACK of your hand on the surface for ten seconds.... if it's too hot for you to do that comfortably, it's too hot for paws. ( yes, very challenging to keep dogs exercising through our summer...because we also have to deal with coyotes and bobcats who are typically active in the early morning, when concrete is most cool)

That's why I like Minneapolis, MN, USA proper. Most of the streets are concrete. Keeps the streets cool, the houses cool. I imagine St. Paul is 5 degrees warmer on a sunny summer day.

Visuals aid better comprehension. "They help learners grasp concepts easily by stimulating imagination and affecting their cognitive capabilities. Besides, the visual language is also known to have the potential to stretch 'human bandwidth' – which comprises absorbing, comprehending and analyzing new information."

Visuals act as stimulators for emotions. "Emotions and visual information are processed in the same part of the human brain. Visual stimuli and emotional response are linked in a simple way and these two together generate what we call memories. Hence, powerful images and visual metaphors create strong impressions and lasting memories in learners."

They drive motivation. "Most of the students struggle with some of their subjects because they find them uninteresting and hence lack the motivation to put in the required efforts. Visuals are the best bet in such scenarios. Captivating images, engaging videos, interesting infographics, etc. help learners fight the boredom and motivate them to do better."

So it very well might be that the things you'll learn from these guides will stay with you. At least for a little while.

Americans don’t tend to support their children, but they will brag about them as if that’s some kind of support. Also, it’s the schools selling stickers, because they bought them, because some company selling them told them they needed to buy them, and maybe some company rep was astroturfing at school board meetings... Hyper-capitalism in the USA drives a lot of things people think is just culture.

If nothing else, bumper stickers put your info on a static (when you're away) object. If someone doesn't like your bumper sticker (because they dislike that politican/policy/law/event/viewpoint/religion/organization/etc) they may just choose to vandalize your car because they disagree with it. In essence, I agree that bumper stickers can lead to negative consequences and tell people too much about you.

this is just paranoia imo. Would be criminals driving around on the road aren't smart/invested enough to deduce all of that while going down the highway or parked at Walmart and plan to rob you accordingly. Those that are I'd guess are super rare and it isn't worth bending over backwards in the off-chance you meet that statistically unlikely outcome. Over and over we hear that robbers check if doors are locked then keep it moving. Just lock your doors.

You are missing the burglars that walk streets and look at parked cars outside people's homes. They frequently eye up properties and would happily use information slapped all over a car. My sister came home to burglars once. She'd changed her weekly routine because her husband was in hospital so she was home unexpectedly early. Smart burglars learn what you do.

In my town we have a hybrid between number three and number four: light so weak that it hardly reaches the ground and it is pointed downwards. So it is so dark in the street that you cannot see where you are going, only standing directly under the lamp shows you about two meters of the drive lane. The lamps are about 50 meters apart. Pedestrians have no chance.

It really is! I used most of them at least a few times, but I can say that the free alternatives often lacks crucial features, or are cumbersome to use. I don't say they're bad at all, but sometimes they're not completely interchangeable (depending on your use case). And considering the paid applications here are so damn expensive, it could be helpful to add some "paid but not that expensive" alternatives - e. g. Affinity designer (illustrator).

You have a right to remain silent. It’s ALWAYS BEST to exercise that right, ALWAYS! If you are stopped by a law enforcement officer, take into consideration they get shot at and they want to feel safe, you can lower their heightened level of concern by just doing a couple of things. Always keep your hands in view. If you need to get something like an ID or paper, say what you want to do before you do it. Pull your car into a well lighted area. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, you may not get an answer but it’s worth trying. Try to calm yourself, talk slowly, be specific. And remember, not all cops are jerks, they are human beings just like you.

LOL...oh Mazer...this is wonderful advice, but does NOT work for everyone...especially in America, sadly. Sometimes, there is no "lowering their heightened level of concern"...since for many, their "concern" is that they are in front of a Black male. Nothing more. I have personally witnessed some of the most respectful, polite interactions with cops that do NOT end well for the driver...because they STILL insist on removing from the car, patting down, searching, interrogating...no matter how much in view your hands are or what you tell them you are going to do. They are human, you are correct...and that sadly comes with their human biases and prejudices, too. This may work fine for some...but not for all of us. Not all Americans are treated the same by police.

Just some more tips to this that will help everyone: For 1. A cop may tell you "No" and are not free to leave. This doesn't mean they are violating your rights, but you may be held for investigative purposes. 2. This means a cop cannot search without your consent, however cops can still search by the following: getting a warrant, may have seen something in plain view that is illegal, dog alerted to something on in your car and now can search, search after getting to arrested, or if it is not your property and its someone else's, they give consent (ie. car). 3. This means an officer should not ask you any questions related to the crime without your lawyer present, but they can still ask you questions in reference to anything else not related to the crime.

If you're not being detained, then you're free to go. If you are detained, then they can only detain you for a "reasonable time" without arresting you. Cops will absolutely ask you questions about the crime even if you don't have a lawyer present, it's up to you to not answer any questions. Don't even answer questions that are seemingly innocent "Did you watch the game last night", may just be a leading question to find out where you were.

And never ever take any field tests for a DUI, all that will be used against you. You don't have to tell them where you are coming from or where you are going, just say I respectfully decline to answer your questions. You will probably get arrested, but great chance of getting it dismissed due to no evidence.

This what millions of antivaxers are experiencing right now. They feel informed because they did internet research. Or because they are a nurse. Or because they know someone who backs up their opinion. They don't even know how much they don't know. To me, the scariest part of being in the US right now is how willing people are to take their opinion as a fact and use groupthink as a form of confirmation. Thousands of people who studied the subject for 8 years and currently work in the field are saying one thing while the other side has Timmy, the YouTube video maker talking to a guy that used to work at company and got fired is saying another. And somehow the thought process is the video is right. That is scary

    Daniel Marsh
    Community Member
4 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Because it's not EXACTLY entirely true. Toucans, crocodiles and most lizards all evolved from a reptile that you'd probably consider to be a "lizard" if you saw it. Toucans and crocodiles have a common ancestor that is more recent than this "lizard," and a little less like "lizards." Birds, you see, are descendents of "dinosaurs," which means "terrible lizards." However, the term "lizard" is now considered formally correct only when applied to members of a group of reptiles called, "squamates," and not dinosaurs, but even this identification is still not scientifically accurate because "squamata" includes snakes, which also have a more recent common ancestor to some lizards than those lizards have to other lizards.

Most of these are great examples and this doesn't apply to them, but: Around twenty years ago, the notion of grouping organisms around most recent common ancestors really cemented as genetics made it rather fool-proof. The problem is that some organisms remain virtually unchanged for hundreds of millions of years, while others rapidly change. So a modern coelocanth which is virtually identical to a 300-million-year-old coelocanth may be "no closer" to its ancestor than you are to some 300-million-year-old amphibian. As such, "reptiles" like lizards and crocodiles are "further" from each other than some repitiles are from birds which evolved "from" reptiles.(This is not true for mammals, which evolved from a branch of the "reptile" class which has no other living representatives.)

    Robert T

This is the UK tax system. It is a little more complicated than that as we also have something called National Insurance, which has a lower and upper limit. It main affects those in the 20% band and adds 12% tax, which means that the base rate of tax is about 1/3 and the transition to 40% is not quite as severe. Bands like this a reasonably fair, as there is no big penalty for moving from one band to the next. We also have something called Stamp Duty that is paid when buying property and this has thresholds which affect the rate you pay - this used to be on the WHOLE amount, so say the threshold was £100k, and the rate was 1%, on a £99k house you'd pay nothing, on a £101k house you'd pay £1,010 - thankfully this now seems to have been abolished and it is now done the same way as income tax.

    Alan Metcalfe
    Community Member

Just remember, National Insurance is calculated but not deducted before tax. So the NI amount is still in the amount that has Income Tax deducted, before it its self is deducted. Basically NI is a tax which is also taxed.

It's missing National Insurance, which is another 12% tax (currently) applied between £9,500 and £50,000, and 2% above £50,000. So your £100k generates £33,400 in tax.

25 is considered nice warm weather where I am, and I personally find anything above 16 odd degrees too much heat to handle 🤦‍♀️ I prefer being too cold than too hot, I can't cope with the latter

This does not take into consideration humidity. My friends son learned the hard way that a Colorado 42 degrees is much easier for our bodies to handle than 56 degrees at the Golden Gate Bridge near sunset in the summer. I tried to warn him, but he refused to heed my warnings, said he would be fine in his t-shirt and jeans. Heck we were fifteen minutes drive inland where it was in the mid 70’s. It took all of five minutes for his face to turn blue and his chin to begin to quiver (I put some sweatshirts in the car before we left). Humidity and a bit of a breeze can make a person feel naked even when eating three layers of clothing, where up in the mountains where the humidity is really low, walking around in 40 degree weather in blue jeans and a t-shirt is no big deal

Newer research suggests that Dopamine isn't JUST a 'reward' chemical, it also has other functions- like helping regulate cell proliferation in your organs. So keep in mind that these body chemicals are more complex than what's being shown here.

This is all hypothetical. There’s some evidence for some of it but it’s unproven and therefore not all factual. As soon as you see people talking about serotonin and mood, immediately turn on your critical thinking and researching mindset. There has literally been disinformation about depression and serotonin produced and disseminated by pharmaceutical companies to promote their unproven hypothesis about depression (the “chemical imbalance” hypothesis has failed scientific rigor so many times that it’s finally been getting pushback and the claim is being pushed less and less). Just because you’ve heard it promoted for decades, including by doctors and pop-sci news articles, does not mean it is a fact. The actual studies are harder reads and result in way less absolutism. Doctors get so much pseudo-science nonsense thrown at them by pharmaceutical companies. Most doctors aren’t scientists. Most doctors don’t keep up on the literature in the MANY fields they tend to advise patients on.

This graphic is slightly misleading because it leaves out any explanation. A "tartan" is a specific design of colors to identify clans and families of Scotland (or recognized groups such as the Black Watch.) A "tartan plaid" is simply a design of colors with no specific meaning. So tartan is a -type- of plaid. Same with gingham, btw, it is a type of plaid.

Not true. It depends on the type of plant. If it's a deciduous plant, you risk drowning it with overwater / waterlogging. Similarly if it is a succulent. You need to look at the leaf type to determine how much water to provide. Assuming a pot plant: waxy leaves, thicker than paper: 1 cup every three days papery thin leaves, dry/papery surface: ½ cup every two days or ¼ cup every day thick fleshy leaves: ½ cup once a week etc.

It's pretty difficult to overwater a plant with one deep watering, and succulents should be watered thoroughly until the water seeps through the drainage hole. It's the frequency they need water that's different, not the amount of water each time.

so much nope... it depends on so many factors, is it an indoor or outdoor plant, how many hrs of sun does it receive, what type of plant, what size of plant, what size of pot, season, type of soil, etc. For example if that plant is an indoor plant that pot is simply too big, even if the soil is very draining it can easily rot.

A plant should always be watered one of 2 ways - Water to drainage, it is important to fully wet all the soil, but to also flush out extra salts and minerals. Some plants are very picky and need to be watered from the bottom, sitting in a dish of water and allowing the soil to absorb from the bottom until the pot is heavy.

The company I used to work for would often have large meetings to inform staff of important updates, so they could be discussed and everyone understood. Unfortunately our HR department loved talking in Acronyms and me as a sixty year old man had no clue what they were talking about. I think a number of people felt the same but didn't want to appear stupid for not knowing what was being said. I started putting my hand up and saying I had no clue what the were talking about. Corporatists have promoted the notion of “giving people exposure”. Yes, it’s a thing. It’s spread into the general populous, probably because people think many skills are just hobbies or “came naturally” to the person trying to make a living. There’s very little respect for skills when people believe they’re “gifts” some people are just “born” with.

My classic car has precisely three warning lights. They are all round bulbs. Red - ignition on/battery discharge warning; Blue - Main beam headlights; Green flashing - Direction indicators. Everything else you either look at an analogue gauge, or use your ears or nose for (brake rub, clutch, oil and coolant all smell). LOL

Scan tool. $150 bucks or so. Worth it's weight in gold. My wife panicked yesterday about a check engine light. Scan tool read read EVAP slightly low, EVAP very low. PO455 and PO456. I knew that was a BS code. It was just a loose gas cap. Tightened the gas cap and cleared the codes. Problem solved.

They act like they know you better than you know you. They don't respect your views. Newsflash - in the end, you are the expert on you. A therapist can help, clarify, empower, reframe, etc - but they aren't you and they don't have the right to dismiss your reality or your views, especially if it is about yourself.

Sort of true. I'm a therapist, and in most cases I will notice or realize things about the client they don't know about themselves. (If I don't, I'm not much good.) The finesse is that you can't tell them until they're pretty close to realizing it themselves. Otherwise they will feel invalidated or disrespected. Take time to help with exploration and feedback, but with tact, timing and dosage in mind.

"Hung" windows don't pivot, they move vertically, counterbalanced by sash weights and a pulley. Single-hung ones just overlap the top pane with the bottom, while double hung ones retract into the walls.

    Tim Douglass
    Community Member

Double-hung typically means that both the top and bottom panes move so that you can open both to improve air circulation. Not sure what to call one that actually retracts into the wall, but it's not double-hung.

This is way off. I lived in northern Minnesota and we had several feet of snow on the ground and still went to school. I'm in the Ozarks and guess what, school is still open when there is snow. Those insulting based on this graph, grow up, it's not right. Not only that, if you're used to driving on snow and have a good DOT to take care of the roads then travel isn't rough. If you're not then everyone is screwed.

We are listed as "any snow" which actually means there is no set policy. The bus drivers drive their routes and report back to the school if it can be done safely with all kids and a determination is made based on that, not the actual snow amount that fell. We have many back roads and lanes that do not get worked by crews (rural area) so different types of snowfall/ice events affect things differently.

I had a coworker tell me that because I can’t drive in snow (I’m from Los Angeles) that I don’t really know how to drive. So I asked him if he could drive a stick shift (he can’t; I can) and explained that perhaps *he* is the one who doesn’t really know how to drive.

Again, in Texas when it snows it is preceded by rain and freezing temps. Black Ice forms on bridges and overpasses, cover that with a "light dusting" of snow and you have HORRIBLE crashes. Do you really want a bus full of children on their way to school crashing because some ass doesn't know how to drive on Texas roads when it snows?

Yall this is so true though. I have a friend who just moved from Illinois and we live as far south Alabama as you can get. It got a little cool the other day and we were talking about how everyone was in long sleeves and he was in shorts and a t-shirt. He said they would still walk to school in like 3 or 4-inch snow, meanwhile, down here we canceled school for even the chance of snow. Because if there's a chance these children can play in some snow we are not gonna be at school😂

Both Texas and Florida are voter suppressed states more than conservative states. Both have state legislatures that throw people off the voter rolls, limit mail-in voting, have inconsistent rules about photo ID, and much more.

This chart appears to be inaccurate, and cites to a youtuber, not a reliable source. Both Florida and Texas get much more back than they put in. The best data I'm aware of is at: https://rockinst.org/issue-areas/fiscal-analysis/balance-of-payments-portal/

I wish the headline was a bit more specific to the reference in what citizens receive from their Government. I get that it’s currency related, but if one considers the services residence get IE: police, fire, road services, county hospitals, parks etc

"Received" money includes funding for police, fire, road service, hospitals, parks and disaster relief. They also receive more federal tax dollars for unemployment, welfare, wic, medicaid and drug addiction costs than they pay. Meanwhile, all of us living in blue states are paying the bills for places like - say - Louisiana, while having far less representation due to our Senate system as well as gerrymandering and the filibuster. America is already ruled by a minority fraction of American voters.

The last one isn't tea. It must be some sort of herbal infusion "tea". Real tea from Camellia sinensis has no caffeine only if it's decaffeinated.

I'm fairly sure they meant infusion with that one. It's simply called "Tee" as well in German for example, so maybe the author wasn't natively English speaking and used/translated the word which was common to them

In what volume? Per serving? What's a serving size then? They could've used the same cup for every single one... Or give the volumes! Comparing an espresso to a cup of tea is useless - it can make you think that a cup full of espresso still has 70mg of caffeine (it's not unreasonable to assume some people will think that). And why it there green tea, black tea and... tea? Just tea?

Ravens do barrel rolls? Not the ravens here… also another way to tell is if the eyes are black, red or orange it’s a crow, if eyes are blue or green they are ravens, if they have yellow eyes they are currawongs.

Patrick Warburton - Brock Samson (Venture Bros.), Kronk (Emperor's New Groove) Joe (Family Guy). Whenever you need a powerful masculine voice, this is your guy. John Dimaggio - Bender (Futurama), Jake the dog (Adventure Time), Brother Blood (Teen Titans Go!), Heidegger (FF7 Remake), and so many others. When you want someone to sound gruff, crass, and/or comically evil there's no better choice.

In India, we usually use country or city names and in a "D as in Delhi" kind of way when speaking. I once had a serviceman on the phone where he was sharing an address of a store I wanted to visit. This was back in 2010 or something and I couldn't find the address on google. He said "B like bra" and I was like what? And instead of changing it to anything else like Bombay, Bangalore or Bengal, he said bra again because I'm assuming that was the only thing he could think of. I couldn't stop laughing after that call ended.

Part of the reason Stradivarius instruments are still so good, was that the trees used to make them were growing during a mini ice age. The rings of the trees were smaller. So it was denser wood.

Best sugars are one of the most sprayed by chemicals plant food source in the world, and impacts of some of the food products we don’t even notice in our food are rapidly negatively impacting local habitats, like coconut and palms wiping out native forests which once supported the orangutans. I wish Alexander Von Humboldt messages about the negative impacts on the environment by the way we choose to farm was recognized and implemented by more people. So sad

I hate this chart so much. An egg that floats is not necessarily "gone bad and should not be eaten", it just says it's a bit older and you shouldn't use it for mayonnaise or a soft boiled egg. Assuming it doesn't smell bad, you can still easily use it for recipes where it's cooked to the full extent.

It is extremely hard to peel frsh eggs that have been hard boiled. There is a membrane between the eggwhite and the shell. It needs to break down before you try to hard boil them. Usually grocery store bought eggs can be used. It takes long enough to get from the farm to the store shelves.

Best way to made hard boiled eggs is to not expose them to sudden temperature changes, start by eggs being at room temp, cover with tepid water, bring water to roiling boil, immediately shut of heat source, leave on burner and cover for 8 minutes. Remove, lay on towel let cool to room temp. No sulfur smell, easy to peel

Oh, man, I've done this with my kids for years. Taking responsibility for your part in an argument is a learned skill. And making sure we say - next time I WILL. Instead of next time I WON'T. Saying "next time I won't yell at you," does no good. What will you do next time instead of yelling? My other favorite is using the "I feel ____ because I _____." Not "You're a jerk because you blabbed my secret." That just continues the fight. Instead "I feel betrayed because I expected you to keep my secret." Now we have something we can actually work on.

Exactly. There's a difference between enjoying organizing and sorting, and organizing and sorting because anything out of align brings you real distress and you can't bring yourself to think of anything else, and it's so constant it takes up your life when you just want to be doing something else. The person reorganizing a store shelf display calmly is not someone with OCD. A person reorganizing a store shelf, and moving on to another store shelf, looking around panicked and upset, maybe having a real OCD moment and is embarrassed/feeling shame.

Inches. Metric: A0 is 841 x 1189 mm, half of that is A1. Half A1 is A2. etc. For standard lettre we use A4 which is 210 x 297mm.

I'm still confused about the aperture and ISO

    martin734
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The aperture controls how much light passes through the lens and sets the depth of field. The depth of field is how far in front or behind the object things are in focus. The ISO determines how sensitive the film or sensor are to light. A low ISO number means that the film or sensor take longer to absorb the light, but the picture quality is clean with no noise (smooth). A high ISO means the sensor or film will absorb light faster but the picture will be very noisy (grainy). For wildlife and portrait photography you will usually use a small F stop (big aperture) and a low ISO of up to around 400 depending on ambient light. This will give good quality photograph with little noise and the object will be in sharp focus with a blurred background and foreground. For action shots a larger F stop (small aperture) and high ISO usually 1600 or higher is used. This allows for a faster shutter speed that will freeze the action and reduce motion blur. These are just general guides though.

This isn't exactly right. "Santoku" literally translates to "three virtues"- it's a multipurpose knife, and the name is often understood to mean that it can be used for vegetables, meat, and fish. Basically, all I actually use on a daily basis in my kitchen is a santoku and a matching petty knife made by the same Japanese blacksmith, and a cheapo bread knife from Tesco. I always suggest to people that instead of buying a moderately priced knife set with all the bells and whistles, they should invest in just one high-quality, well-made santoku. If you care for it right, it'll last you a lifetime, and it can do literally 99% of what needs to be done in an average home kitchen.

Some of these are not very informational, as you can not compare the price of ingredients or components to a finished product. So maybe I'll save $$ by buying my new phone piece by piece. But then I have jus that: phone pieces. Not to mention the cost of ordering it from various places..

These kind of charts are not providing the whole picture. A product isn't just the cost of manufacture. It's also logistics, research, expertise and storage. For example perishables like food need to be stored in a certain way, and that factors into the costs. A large item that takes up inventory space is also a hidden cost. A good cake may use pretty ordinary ingredients but the bakers' expertise makes a world of difference. Sure there are scammy business practices but one should not just conclude based on cost of producing the item alone.

The high mark up on prescription brand name drugs is NOT by the drug companies, it is, as for all prescription drugs, a function of the drug store. I used to only buy brand name NEVER generic because I was concerned about quality control. If it is made in China, I won't even consider it. But my scripts went from 400 bucks a fill to 4000 bucks a refill. The drug company had NOT raised prices, but the drugstore had. And that WAS at Costco.

The only positive thing about cars is their convenience. Collectively, they create so much pollution, use so many resources to make them, are the sole reason for traffic jams and they increase the risk of road accidents. Also, covid didn't start spreading till less than 2 years ago, so that's not a valid argument.

Sounds more like it's a social problem in the area where you live or travel to. For some reason, people think all these drunks and addicts live on the bus. Drivers get the same issues in my city when they're at an intersection. I've seen 2 scraggly guys approach a car at a light with one guy at the driver's window and the other leaning on the front of the hood. Poor driver couldn't even move his car to go around.

EU car occupancy rates average around 1.3, so 50 people = 38 cars roughly. But occupancy rates vary strongly by time and line and city. Given the problem is only really pressing for cities at peak times, it's fair to put the car occupancy around 1.2 (40 cars), and the single deck bus with 50 passengers (out of 80--90) is relatively low. POST COVID... bus capacity very low though.

I was good with catching on math: decimals, counting change, multiplication, division, in grade 3. In grade 4 we, of course, get a different teacher and she wants to do a refresher. Instead of regular division ( or dummy division, as she called it) she gives us a crash course lecture on long division, and explained it so fast I lost all confidence and recollection of how to do division at all.

This is such a long way to do it, 5 into 9 goes once, carry the remainder 4 next to the 2, 5 into 42 goes 8, carry the remainder 2 next to the 3, 5 into 23 goes 4 - ending up with 184r3.

This way of presenting it is not going to appeal to those who find Maths hard. Looking at this paper shows such a complicated mess of lines and numbers that it's off-putting. A quicker and tidier way is to write a little 4 before the 2 (42), then a 2 before the 3 (23) as you're working them out.

The arrows are the wrong way round for the metric table. 1 km divided by thousand gives you one metre.

    oddkiddo

4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

What the table does is teach you how to convert a specific distance from kilometers to meters etc. So if you have 1 kilometer you multiply with thousand to get the distance in meters and so forth. 1 kilometer then representing 1.000.000 mm. ;)

Most people don't know how to do this safely, nor know when/where the appropriate time/place to drift. Leave it to the professional stunt drivers and racers. If you want to play with your car, some race tracks allow the public to use the tracks for that purpose.

What is deep REM sleep? REM-sleep is the opposite of deep sleep. If I remember it right REM stage is the closest to "awake" and this is where you dream (and have Rapid Eye Movements). Then there are 4 levels of deep(er) sleep, none of which is called anything related to REM because you don't have the Rapid Eye Movements in deep sleep

If you cut it the way described you can squeeze them individually and get the most juice out, if you just cut them in half there will still be some juice left in the lime.
