As we get older, it’s easy to fall into routines and stick to what’s familiar—after all, with jobs, responsibilities, and family commitments, our days are often busy and predictable. But that doesn’t mean we have to let things become boring.
Take these spirited grandfathers, for example, who are living life to the fullest. From taking on extreme sports to mastering unique hobbies and dressing sharply, they show that aging doesn’t mean losing your spark. My Grandpa In Front Of The Plane He Flew In World War II. He's 97 Now
OMG it's amazing that he is standing in front of the plane that he flew.
It's amazing he's standing anywhere at that age!
Load More Replies...What going on with these fabulous looking older people? They need to start telling us what they are doing.
This was posted on Reddit 3 years ago, so he'd have been 18 in 1942. Though even if he was 18 in 1945 he could still have served. My grandad lied about his age and enlisted when he was 15 and he wouldn't have been 18 til 1945 either.
Load More Replies...In WWII you could be signed in to service by your parents as young as 16, especially if you had flying experience. I know my Dad joined the CBs at 16 and graduated high school in the Navy after the war.
And there are documented cases of US enlistees as young as fourteen, with parental consent, altered birth certificate and a willing recruiter. Draft ages for WWII were 18-38 by 1945. I've spoken with Nazi veterans who were drafted at age fifteen; deserters faced a firing squad.
Load More Replies...Aging is a natural part of life, but it can be a tough pill to swallow as we move into our later years and face changes in our bodies and lifestyles. Studies show that while our self-esteem tends to be at its highest in our 60s, it usually starts to dip in our 70s, making it harder for people to try new things or seek out exciting opportunities. Moreover, some research suggests that younger generations have grown more critical of older adults, raising concerns about how attitudes toward aging might evolve down the road.
This 84-Year-Old Japanese Grandpa Let His Grandson Dress Him And Now He's Modeling On Instagram
Wow... I bet if I watched a video of him he'd be doing the whole catwalk strut. Nice!
Coolest grandcat in the world! I am a 74 Japanese-American and I am stealing this look.
What style! Visually arresting and totally unexpected and - BAM - hits just right!
So next time some utter cockwomble suggests you should dress your age, refer them to this geezer, for geezer he surely is.
To learn more about the difficulties of aging and how to tackle them, Bored Panda spoke with Dr. Francesco Pagnini, a professor of Clinical Psychology at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan and a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard University.
“As with all life transitions,” he explains, “the psychological challenges of aging depend on various factors, including personal, social, familial, economic, and medical aspects. However, some common challenges often arise more frequently than others.”
Many people experience a shift in their sense of identity, particularly when they retire or encounter other major life changes. “Retirement can alter a person’s social role,” says Dr. Pagnini, “potentially leading to a diminished sense of self-worth and purpose, as they may no longer see themselves as meaningful contributors to the community.”
My Grandfather In Vancouver
OP says, about his Grammy-award winning grandfather, “Look. Some people radiate greatness and intrigue. Every time I’m around him he has a new story worth telling. Like the time he fought his stud horse after being bitten in the shoulder. My grandad won btw. Or the fact that he had his first child at 14. Or the time he won the Oklahoma Rodeo Finals and became a champion roper in 99’ Or the time he helped Arnold Schwarzenegger ride a horse. He is a celebrity for a reason. He’s not your average man. On and off the screen”

Our bones can shrink in size and density, making them more susceptible to fractures, while muscles may lose strength, endurance, and flexibility, affecting coordination. Vision and hearing might deteriorate, and a weakened immune system can leave us more prone to diseases.
“Physical health issues can have a significant psychological impact,” notes Dr. Pagnini, “such as reducing the perceived control one has over their life or increasing feelings of insecurity.” Additionally, people might perceive themselves differently to cope with physical limitations because they can no longer do some of the activities they once enjoyed.

Nice Hudson's Bay Point Blanket Coats too. Excellent quality, but you will pay for it. However, if properly cared for, you can use them your entire life AND pass them on to your kids.

Barrel racing at 98, WOW. A lot of these things are dangerous at any age but the older you get the worse the injuries can be.
But what a way to go! Doing something you love! Plus all the work of staying stable on a horse leads to a strong core and bones
Load More Replies...Along with physical difficulties, existential fears can come into play. According to Dr. Pagnini, many people try to avoid thinking about death or their own mortality. However, facing medical challenges, losing loved ones, and becoming more aware of life’s limits can bring about deep psychological struggles as we age. Knowing that life might soon come to an end can also change our sense of time, making it feel like it’s moving faster.

Growing older can also be accompanied by a sense of being disconnected from others. “With age, social circles may shrink due to the loss of friends, reduced mobility, or retirement from social settings, leading to feelings of loneliness and isolation,” says Dr. Pagnini.
These sentiments appear to be on the rise. Recent research shows that one in three adults aged 50–80 (34%) report feeling lonely. While this is a big drop from 2020, when 56% felt isolated during the pandemic, it’s still higher than the pre-pandemic level of 27%.

Our society also limits the elderly by promoting many aging stereotypes. “We often perceive aging more negatively than it actually is, creating a risk of a self-fulfilling prophecy where individuals internalize these stereotypes, potentially worsening their psychological well-being,” says Dr. Pagnini.

Woodworking Fun With Grandad
If your Grandad looks that cool you probably feel sorry for your classmates because there's no way their grandads look that cool
I adored my Grandpa Ernie. My Grandmother was always awful to me because I was chubby. Grampa would let me hang out with him in his workshop/garage. He taught 10 y/o me how to use every power tool he had, and how to clean them so they lasted. He taught me how to change the oil in the truck and how to change the spark plugs (including how to gap them properly, it was the 70s). When he passed away, I was 18. Grandma asked if I could come down and help her on the farm. Of course. I chopped about 3 cords of wood & helped her get the house in order (in case she wanted to sell). She gave me Grandpa's old violin and an antique student desk (with the iron legs on skids). She promised me all of the tools I wanted. Came time to leave and ALL the tools were gone, she'd given them to her best friend's husband. I never spoke to her again.
Negative feelings towards aging have become so ingrained in us that we might not even realize how much we reinforce them in our daily lives—from the relentless pursuit of anti-aging skincare to making jokes about life ending when we're still in our twenties.
“For years, I sent my friends 50 and older ‘funny’ cards like this one, which read, ‘I don’t know how much time you have left, so I’ll keep this brief. Happy Birthday,’” writes journalist Steven Petrow.
“I complimented some of those same older folks by insisting they didn’t look their age (as if their real age were a bad thing). I tried to whitewash my résumé—and thereby my age—by lopping off early jobs and erasing the year I graduated from college and grad school. And after my divorce three years ago, I lied about my age when I signed up for dating apps.”
Petrow has since stopped these habits, but his reflections reveal just how pervasive ageism is in our culture.
Grandfather Of The Season
My Grandpa Was Very Excited To Show Me That He Grew A Tomato Plant In An Eggshell
Wow, that is pretty amazing! Especially how the plant managed to grow up through the small opening of the egg shell, without breaking it. Surprised that the minimal amount of soil that the eggshell could hold, was enough.
That looks like it was a school project. The egg is painted and looks like it has a tiny photo on it. And the glued on stick. So probably he was given this by one of his grandkids and was showing that he cared enough to actually grow the plant. When I was a kid it was corn in cut off milk cartons. The corn never made it to maturity but it grows fast so it's exciting for a little kid to watch.

Embodying aging stereotypes can act like a placebo or nocebo effect, explains Dr. Pagnini. In other terms, how we perceive aging influences how we actually age. If we expect it to be a negative experience, we might end up living that way. But if we broaden our outlook and shift these perceptions in a positive direction, both our psychological and physical health can see significant improvements.

The Coolest Grandpa Award Goes To This Guy Right Here

Dr. Pagnini and his team tested beliefs about aging in a study inspired by the work of Ellen Langer, an American professor of psychology at Harvard University, who became the first woman to be tenured in psychology there in 1981.
“We had older adults live ‘as if’ it were 1989 for a week. The participants in the experimental group showed physical and functional rejuvenation by the end of the week!”

Load More Replies...Yes!! This is the type of s**t we would do when we visited my Dad's friend or Great Uncle Alvin aka Hambone on their farms. That is how I learned the "Redneck" Slip N'Slide, Tarp, Vegetable Oil or Crisco Shortening and a garden hose, which is something me and my friends did a lot when we were teens. We called the picture above "Puddle Jumping" because if you hit a bump you're "Board" would actually jump over it and if you put some type of oil on the underside of the board then it would make it smoother to ride.
IDK about 'dangerous' - the kid is behind the tractor, not in front, grass is fairly soft to land on, and the tractor isn't that fast. Looks survivable to me - and fun !

Dr. Pagnini encourages maintaining a flexible mindset about aging. “Getting older does not necessarily mean becoming slower, less mentally sharp, or depressed,” he says. “On the contrary, aging can bring new and vital opportunities. Older adults can discover deep fulfillment in areas such as friendship, family, love, spirituality, and even physical activity. And let’s not forget sexuality!”

Load More Replies...Back in the late 90s I worked in the fitness industry (equipment side) and knew a body builder that was in his 70s. He won pretty much all of his competitions because of how few competitors there were in his age category. Most of the time he was the only one that showed up.
“Don’t buy into unnecessary limitations,” continues Dr. Pagnini. “I recall counseling an elderly woman who loved to ski, but at 80 years old, she felt it was no longer possible. We discussed how she could still enjoy skiing, perhaps with the support of a companion and on easier slopes. A few weeks later, she told me she had gone back to skiing and felt more alive than ever.”
This is a powerful reminder that with the right mindset and support, older adults can continue to engage in the activities they love. Aging, after all, is not just about what we lose but also about what we gain.

Or he could be in Australia or New Zealand, where Christmas is in Summer.

Eventually the arc may become a complete ring around the colored portion (iris) of the eye. Arcus Senilis is common in older adults, it's caused by fat deposits deep in the edge of the cornea. It doesn't affect vision, nor does it require treatment. According to the Mayo Clinic.
