Everyone feels differently about cooking. Some people find it to be a relaxing, enjoyable act of love, while others consider it the bane of their existence and avoid it at all costs. Often someone’s opinion on cooking depends on how they grew up and what they are used to. If you were never shown an example as a child of making a home cooked meal using fresh produce, you’re not likely to venture out to the farmer’s market on Saturday morning to pick up ingredients for dinner. 

Traditionally in most cultures, women have been expected to take the lead in the kitchen, and it seems some things never change. According to the World Cooking Index, women still cook meals twice as often as men. But culture also plays a role in how developed our culinary skills become. A 2018 survey in the United Kingdom found that one in four Brits can only cook three recipes from scratch. Meanwhile, in India, the average person spends 13.2 hours a week cooking. These stats aren’t particularly surprising though, as most people I know are much more fond of Indian food than British cuisine. And suddenly, I have an intense craving for curry…

The United States is also not among the countries where people tend to spend many hours laboring in the kitchen. In 2017, Eddie Yoon, a researcher for the Harvard Business Review, conducted a survey that found that 90% of Americans don’t like cooking, with half of those people saying they outright hate it. Lucky for them, it’s pretty easy to avoid making meals at home these days. Yoon credits the rise of restaurant culture and convenience foods for America’s distaste for cooking. The average US household spends over $3,000 on dining out each year, while the same meals prepared at home typically cost around half the price. While the temptation to hit up your favorite Italian restaurant or order sushi on Doordash becomes greater over time, it’s important to be aware of the financial implications of eating out.

We reached out to Chef Egg, professional chef, culinary instructor and host of interactive cooking events, to hear from an expert why it's important to know how to cook. The first reason Chef Egg notes is the financial benefit. "Restaurants charge 3x4 times the cost of the food," he told us. Next, he stressed how enjoyable cooking can be. "I like food…a lot. It tastes great. Once you have the basic fundamentals down you can literally create any recipes with good results." He notes that cooking can also be a good way to squeeze in more nutritious meals. "You will naturally eat more healthfully. Restaurant food can be awful for your health. Regulate salt, fat and carbs by cooking yourself."

Preparing your own food can also get you more in touch with your body. Chef Egg told us that cooking can "improve small motor skills, strength, patience, health, wellbeing as well as your sense of smell and taste". Lastly, he told us expanding our cooking skills can help "increase [our] knowledge of the world and different cultures". "Your food journey will enlighten the way you think about your fellow humans and the world in which we live. We are all connected."

If you’ve always been intimidated by cooking and assumed you lack the innate skills it requires, don’t lose faith yet. On her blog In Good Taste, Maris Callahan has shared four “Reasons Why You Might Think You’re A Bad Cook” to help readers understand that a few simple tweaks can exponentially elevate their kitchen skills. The first mistake Maris notes is beginners trying “to tackle complicated recipes with long ingredient lists”. While it can be exciting to delve into the world of cooking, as with anything else, it’s best to start with baby steps. Maris notes that it can be great to dip your toes into the culinary pool by making “simple one-pot type dishes that are flavorful, relatively hands off and require little cleanup”. Another common mistake people make is overcooking everything out of fear of food poisoning. Maris’ suggestion to resolve this issue is to invest in an oven thermometer. “It doesn’t have to be a fancy one, but it will keep you from eating rubber chicken for the rest of your life,” she notes.

Next, Maris reassures readers that taking longer to prepare a recipe than you originally thought does not mean you’re a bad cook. When a recipe says it takes "just twenty minutes!", that typically means it takes a professional twenty minutes. Allot yourself extra time, and prep ingredients before you get started to help everything run smoothly. Lastly, Maris addresses the misconception that being forgetful in the kitchen translates to being a bad cook. She recommends focusing on one step at a time to avoid chaotically searching for ingredients while your garlic and onions are turning black on the stove.

Being home all the time meant that hour we typically spent commuting could now be used to prepare meals, and as our boredom became painful, we had to find something to look forward to. Why not let that be trying new recipes? One 2020 survey found that 54% of Americans started cooking more during the pandemic, and 46% started baking more. These new habits also helped 75% of  Americans feel more confident in the kitchen, with 73% of them reporting they even enjoy cooking more than before. While being home in lockdown inspired people to experiment with many new hobbies, learning how to cook is certainly a great choice for our health, our wallets and our overall enjoyment of food.

This company is…. Truly evil. Like I know y’all hate Amazon but this place is worse. My mother’s favorite example is that they, to sell gerber baby formula, basically send people to tell poor African mothers that breast milk is not sufficient for their baby and that they need formula. Daniela Galarza of The Washington Post wrote a piece in 2020 examining the phenomenon of inept cooks suddenly scrambling to learn after being forced to isolate in their homes. Galarza notes that when people slip through childhood and adolescence without learning how to cook, they’re not likely to show interest as adults either. “I can make spaghetti or tacos, but I’m scared of burning rice,” says Amy Myers, a 29-year-old developer based in Chicago. “My mom is a single mom and worked full-time, so she didn’t have time to do a lot of cooking. So once you’ve decided you’d like to venture into the world of cooking, where do you even begin? There are countless recipe blogs online, but the unlimited resources can be overwhelming. Thankfully, Elyssa Goldberg at Bon Appétit created a list of “The 7 Essentials of Becoming A Better Cook” to hold your hand through the beginning of your culinary journey. The first thing Elyssa notes that we must understand to be able to cook is different methods like roasting, sautéing, stir-frying, etc. Next, she recommends dedicating some time to understanding various ingredients. Learn which recipes are better with quinoa and which are more suited for rice. Would lentils or chickpeas be more complimentary of this sauce? Have fun and experiment to gain some knowledge. So if you’ve made it this far, and you’re still not inspired, you may be thinking, “what’s the point of learning how to cook?” Well, buying your own ingredients and preparing meals at home can save you a significant amount of money. It also allows you to understand exactly what’s going into your food. And once your palate becomes more evolved, you can prepare foods specifically to your liking, whereas meals you buy out might be aimed at more generic audiences. Cooking is also a rewarding experience. Tasting the fruits of your own labor is more satisfying than being brought a dish that you had no part in creating. Once we open the box of cooking curiosity, we’re likely to want to sharpen our skills even more and continue learning more recipes.

If you grew up in Italy, your parents might not have prepared Mexican dishes very often, but there’s no reason you can’t learn the cuisine. Just open up Google or Youtube and you can find countless recipes and tutorials for street tacos, chilaquiles, tostadas and more. Understanding how a country eats provides great insight into their culture, and it can be a way to feel connected to the world when traveling is not always feasible for our budgets and work schedules. And let's not forget that trying new foods is fun!

Durian is best eaten frozen. Smells like stinky feet. (A coworker said it was jack fruit. He's the one that brought it to work. Said he got it from an Asian specialty store and that it was called Jack Fruit and he said they sold it frozen and that was the best way to eat it. As pungent as that fruit was it was actually good tasting. If I were wrong, he was wrong. Sheesh.)

Actually, I think you may be referring to Durian Fruit. Tastes awesome, but in some of the countries where it is sold, you are not allowed to open them in the stores or enclosed areas because of the smell they emit.

I love rambutan and lychee! They have such a lovely floral taste. One of my very close friends is originally from India and one of my memories growing up is how we always used to eat these delicious lychee and rambutan jelly snacks.

the mouse melon is hardy zones 7-10 US south; the physalis is hardy in the southern US with some winter protection, usually grown as an annual... Some of the common names for Physalis include Goldenberry, Chinese Lanterns, Winter cherry, Husk tomato, and Cape Gooseberry.... the loquat is hardy to zone 7 but will most likely not produce fruit that far north since it flowers in Jan-Feb... some gardeners grow them for their big pretty leaves. it will produce fruit after a mild winter in zone 8... the rest of these are tropical

We call them cucamelon in the UK. They grow quickly and are a fun plant for kids to grow. We found the best use for the fruit was to slice it and have it in our Pimms.

Finally found the proper name for nísperos (loquat) but what they didn't mention is that it's very small, about apricot sized, and at least half of it is taken up by 2 or 3 stones in the middle, so it's a lot of work for a small, but sweet, return. Also, chirimoya! (Spanish nsme), - so happy to finally know its name is a custard apple! Also, tons of large seeds, so takes ages to eat, but worth it if you like its very sweet flavour.

Durian and foods with Durian added are banned from most places. Work, airplanes, trains etc. Also, if you do buy it in canada, it doesn't taste the same as the stuff towards Mexico. Just heads up. Most tropical stuff up here doesn't taste near the same

Jackfruit juice contains latex so do beware if you have a latex allergy. Although anaphylaxis is rare, it has occurred. For the same reason (latex), you may not want to cut it up with your best knives.

I’ve had this fruit I can’t find the name of. I might be a nut. It’s fairly small and kind of flat. You have to crack its “shell” (kind of like you’d open a pistachio except it has no opening), and it’s really soft and sweet on the inside. It has a fairly big pit/seed compared to the edible part though, but it’s still a small “fruit”.

The jackfruit tree took so well to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that it grows in the forests and in some of the streets of São Paulo. It's a huge fruit, the size of a watermelon.

A lot of people use Jack fruit and durian interchangeably, and mistakenly think they are the same fruit. Also, do not eat durian candy! It supposedly SMELLS the way the fruit tastes (good) but TASTES the way the durian fruit smells (like death, or more charitably, like dirty gym socks). Source: parents who grew up in the Philippines

jackfruit is actually not bad smelling... in my opinion it's best as dried fruit snack... healthy food stores will have it. it's addictive and healthy and low sugar. it's often used in place of pulled meats in jerk flavor spices.

Jackfruit originated in India and India is the largest producer of the fruit in the world. Thus the list of countries should include India or say south east Asia. It is eaten raw in curries and has a stringy meaty texture or ripe as a fruit with a sweet chewy texture.

I highly recommend mangosteen it is sweet and fresh I love it. I never in my life would consider physalis (uchuva in Spanish) or soursop (Guanábana in Spanish) as a weird and exotic fruits. They are so common here that I forgot that they don’t exist in other countries. If you have the chance try them all 🥰🥰

Familiar with 9 of these. Not bad. There's also Duku langsat, pulasan(rambutan like), wild durian(extreme alcohol flavour). If you come to Malaysia, you must have Musang King Durian. Love it or hate it but it's a must try. Rich sweet creamy custard taste with a very strong odour that you can ignore after 5 minutes. Bear in mind the taste and smell of durians are not uniform like for example oranges or apples. One fruit of the even same variety(there are hundreds of cultivars) can have very different notes on bitterness[alcohol like) or sweetness or even texture depending on region and ripeness of the fruit.

Jack fruit and SourSop (Guyabano) are must not miss. These smell and taste good. You can find Jack fruit in wrapped banana fritters (or mung porridge) and SourSop as milk shake flavor in the Philippines.

I love going to Asian grocery stores and buying durian, jackfruit, etc. My husband and I even planted a few jackfruit seeds and they grew into saplings! We had to leave them behind when we moved (they were in pots but the movers wouldn't put them on the truck because of some liability issue).

Brought durian cookies to work once for the team to try. They were not good. They were so smelly that I took them out to the dumpster. Normally, a large # of crows hung out around the dumpster. They left it alone until the trash was taken away.

And if you get mangosteen juice (from the purple skin) on hamds, surfaces, clothing it can be really hard to remove. Not impossible but really hard to remove. Happy to be proved qrong or, if anyone has tips on how to remove the stains, I would really appreciate it.

Having lived in Asia for quite some time, I have tried many of these fruits. My favorite on this list is chikoo, which is especially good when it's refrigerated. I also like mangosteen (though you gotta be careful with the juice, because the stain is virtually impossible to remove), soursop and rambutan, and kaffir lime is a great addition to many foods. Not a big fan of jackfruit, and I abhor durian.

Loquat is very common in Israel, grows in many yards and you can just pick them anywhere. Very yummy. Also mulberries. Both in season now, makes walking around the city much better :)

Loquats are delicious eaten straight off the tree but, they are mostly seeds and brown (even on the tree) very quickly

Absolutely love Jackfruit, Custard Apple, and Chikoo. Some mentioned jack fruit had a bad smell - that could occur only if it is way overripe, and well beyond consuming point. Even then, it does not even come close to the powerful unique array of scents, as defined in the posted picture.

I once bought something Just to try it. Looked like fig, it was small And Hard with bluish-purple colour, inside was slimy And White with Black seeds, looked ugly but oh my gosh the taste was perfect. I have no idea what it was. Maybe the mangosteen Edit: I searched for it. It was passion fruit

I love kumquat, too bad it didn't make it! (Edit: but I'm glad others did like the millennial loquat, rambutan, mangosteen...). I also know of fruit very similar to custard apple, but can't remember the English names, and I'm too sleepy to search now).

Jackfruit is crazy fragrant, the fruity tooty smell permeates EVERYTHING. Sounds like nice at first, but after a few days it's sickening

I’m surprised loquats are mentioned, I don’t live in any of those areas and yet several of my neighbors have loquat trees. Also, custard apples are also called cherimoyas and are absolutely delicious.

Custard apple? I think it's the same as cherymoya? And cherymoya is delicious. I tried phylasis, it's fine but nothing special, kiwano is basically cucumber, mangosteen is tasty. Unfortunatelly exotic fruits are pricey.

Kaffir Lime leaves are really good in Thai curries. The smell of Durian though makes me gag. It's horrible. Like rotting garbage.

Star fruit is amazing id highly recommend trying it! But be careful if you're allergic to kiwi etc I had a slight allergic reaction to both so I'm assuming they're similar in one way or another

There's an area of San Antonio Texas where every street has loquats on it, and they *drip* with fruit when in season. My coworker and I nabbed dozens. Delicious.

Jackfruit is super delicious fully ripe and eaten cold. Unripe can be cooked with coconut milk, red peppers, ginger. Very tasty. Mangosteen is super healthy, delicious. Snakefruit is crisp like raw garlic🤢 Durian is delicious from Thailand and eaten cold. Otherwise🤢 The rest are meh!

I went to africa. Had fresh jack fruit. Best to cover hands with flower as the yellow pods are sticky. Inside the yellow pods are a HUGE pit.

Unfortunately this is not exactly true. The chart is partly correct as it refers to the sugar content naturally occuring in the grapes, but not taking into account the process. The sweetness of wine is not only determined by original grape but by vinification. Riesling, for example, more often than not is vinified as dry, although having much (inherent) sugar to begin with. Dry ports and dry moscato do exist, as do sweet Sangiovese or Sauvignon Blanc. To make matters even more complicated, this variies regionally - some grapes are mostly vinified dry in one country and sweet in another.

Chamomile can also help calm nausea, cramps, and intestinal distress. It helps calm spasms so it provides some relief from these things. It is also calming and is helpful for anxiety. When I am having stomach issues I actually combine peppermint and chamomile tea.

Baking soda does work, but it only takes a little bit. I'd start with a 1/4 teaspoon; you can always add more, if needed. Add too much and the dish is ruined.
