People On This Group Are Laughing At These 30 Buildings Attempting To Hide Their Previous Purpose
Just like the clothes and accessories we choose to wear define us in subtle ways, buildings can be figured out in the way they are built and decorated.
It all boils down to what is traditionally associated with the structure—say, what does a McDonald’s typically look like, and can you strip it of its branding to see the same iconic elements to still see the McDonaldishness of it?
This is exactly what this online group is all about—identifying and pointing out how buildings aren’t fooling anyone, even if their purpose is very different.

Señior Colonel
This is pretty awesome. Also turning an old plantation owner looking white guy into a Mexican guy is pretty amusing.
Actually, Colonel Sanders was from a poor farming family whose mother also worked in a factory. The photo is great though.

Walgreens That Used To Be A Historic Bank. Chicago, Il
This is nice. I don't know what Walgreens sells, but its nice they have retained the original features of the building.
It's a d**g store. Has a pharmacy and then light shopping, some health related stuff, and over the counter medicine.
Load More Replies...It’s actually not even a Walgreens anymore and hasn’t been for a couple years, they’re turning it into a Barnes and noble
A book store will look even better, assuming they also leave the decor
Load More Replies...OMFG! Why is it a Walgreens? It could be anything, from a children's science museum to a gay bathhouse! And no, I'm not into gay bathhouses, but some people are, and damn..... what - a - waste.
Used to go to an alternative cafe. Ground floor was essentially the old bank lobby with tables added. Second floor was the old bank offices, turned into the owners offices, a staff break room, and what amounted to "crash pads" for staff. The basement? Underground parties & small raves with a bank vault.

THATS MY LIBRARY!!!! they used a marsh for a short amount of time because the library was getting renovated it was really cool.
Is this in IN. That is the only place I know Marsh stores were located.

So, there’s a subreddit called r/NotFoolingAnybody that serves as Reddit’s dedicated community of building spotters with a twist. The twist being recycled retail buildings that were obviously something different (and often in ways that still allow folks to determine its origins—consider all the McD buildings around as proof).
Pizza Hut Turned Urgent Care
There's an old Pizza Hut in my town that was turned into a funeral home. The sign is pretty much the only thing they changed.
I guess I wasn't the only person that got that Das Racist song in their head.
Load More Replies...There's a Mexican restaurant here that used to be a pizza hut. New sign, and they painted the building black.
An old Pizza Hut on Grand Avenue, PHX AZ, became a strip club back in the day.
This Trader Joe's In Media, Pennsylvania, Used To Be An Armoury For The Pennsylvania National Guard
Me, too. Is it weird that I kinda want to go? It's an hour and 40 minutes from where I live--I just checked--which is a little far to go for a grocery store. If it was closer to an hour I'd already be planning my trip.
Load More Replies...We have one of these in our neighborhood, but instead of turning it into something useful it is now a church.
You have to go visit it. It's in a quiet little town with lots of restaurants and bars. The court house is nearby so there's some upscale dining.
There's an historic armory building in my city that has changed hands several times over the years. Prior to its setup now (leased office spaces above, event space on the ground floor) it was owned by a porn production company for over a decade. lmao

To get sidetracked for a moment, you’d think that buildings are supposed to universally provide shelter and living quarters for people. However, it’s quite interesting to see that there are several reasons why they mostly differ.
Urban Krag Climbing Center, Dayton Oh
I'm sure to upset some, but in my opinion, this is way better than it's previous use. Sorry just me.
I'm not going to comment on the idea of the usage of buildings like this, because religion is personal to every person, wether they believe or not. but... in my experience, buildings "of religion" are often beautiful and to see them repurposed is a good thing
Load More Replies...I've climbed here. It's a nice place. Lots of people find peace and contemplation in climbing outdoors or in, so this is a nice fit. Also, around here lots of old church buildings are too expensive to maintain as churches. Some just crumble until they have to be demolished for safety.
I'm fine with repurposing the space but I wish it was something that could utilize it better than blocking windows with sheets of plywood to hang plastic on.
We have an old church turned into a gymnastic studio near me. Giant foam pit and all!
I took gymnastics in an old church. We used to jump off the balcony onto the trampoline. It was fun.
Load More Replies...I think Detroit has a church that was converted into a skateboard park inside. I don't think its disrespectful to reuse a religious building and like to think if God did exist, he'd appreciate that.
Churches of certain denominations were blessed as holy grounds. They don't just repurpose like other buildings
Taco Bell Turned Into Law Offices
I miss these styles of Taco Bells. I grew up with one and it was awesome. And then they "modernized" it, which was dumb in my opinion.
Tim Hortons And Circle K (Toronto, On)
To be fair, it was in really bad condition after being abandoned for years. While it would have been nice for it to become the Allenby/Roxy theatre again, the restoration work they did on the building has brought it back to a decent state of preservation.
Load More Replies...I lived the neighbourhood before reconstruction, it was bordered up and an eyesore. I miss that place!
There’s a concept of site-specific architecture, which essentially means that a building or a structure is of a time and of a place.
It is essentially designed to respond and describe the physical and metaphysical contexts of where it’s at. This can include everything from the specifics of the location to what materials are available to what building codes dictate its characteristics.
Gay Bar In Cedar Rapids Used To Be A McDonald's
Even though it's not a Burger King, people still look for a whopper there.
Big Woody’s (Bethlehem, Pa) Just Rolling With The Former Hollywood Video Signage
There's an old Hollywood video in my town that kept the signage and is now Hollywood Antiques
Why do I picture Ron Burgundy walking around in there saying “Don’t act like you’re not impressed!”?
Apple Store In An Old Theatre, Los Angeles
At least the building is still being used and hasn't been torn down.
Load More Replies...This one is kind of sad. I'm sure it made sense financially. The theater likely closed because it just wasn't not bringing in enough money to be viable. Or building restorations were needed they were unable to afford. A local theater almost closed for similar reasons but the community rallied, building was renovated but kept all the old good stuff - and it continues to function as a theater. Plays, performing acts, sometimes a film movie and so on. But to go from "culture for the community" to "Apple store" is sad.
I think I went to a rave there in the 90s before it became a sad store.
The ultimate reason as to why buildings differ is exactly that—the reason it is being built in the first place.
Depending on its purpose, buildings can assume appropriately practical shapes and sizes, catering to the specific needs of that particular purpose.

Sears Store At My Mall Was Turned Into A Fake Mega Church For A TV Show
LOVE THAT SHOW!!!! The show was filmed in Charleston, SC so I am wondering where this is! (I live an hour and a half away in Columbia, SC)
It's in Charleston. A quote from a YouTube video says, "The Sears labelscar behind the Gemstone sign is fake. They actually created the Sears image for the show. It was formerly a Sears but there was never actually a Sears sign in that spot. Pretty cool prop magic!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJOdnqNzT9Q
Load More Replies...Why didn´t they at least try to clean the fassade a bit before adding the fake church sign? Or was the buildings past as a sears added into the how?

Say your building needs to serve a residential purpose. These will be primarily designed around factors like safety and accessibility. They will be built in places that have good pedestrian and vehicular logistics, with various utilities and services readily available, or at the very least easily realizable. That’s also the reason why many residential buildings are often high and space-conscious.
Value Village Looking Slick In A Former Best Buy
Meh, it's decent but a lot of it is over priced these days. We have one locally that used to be a Toys R Us. And they got in trouble with the law for false advertising so now they have signage to make it clear they are a for profit business and only some of the money goes to support disabled. Our Salvation Army store closed a few years ago but we still have Goodwill and several smaller independent thrift stores. And one for the Humane Society. You can often find better deals in those ones. But Value Village is pretty good for size I guess.
Load More Replies...So Why Does A Hair Salon Need Three Drive-Through Lanes? (Former Bank)
Why does a bank need drive through lanes? Legit question, I'm danish.
Surprisingly, some financial institutions are switching to drive through only. One of our credit unions are trying to discourage people from using the lobby. Yet, you can't do everything from the drive through
Load More Replies...They have the pneumatic tubes from the old bank. Car side blow outs after work on Friday before you head to the club or theater.
Former Wal-Mart Now Board Of Education
The usage change is not so odd - we have a local large retail that is now DSHS. But the weird part to me is the board of education would need such a large space / so much square footage. They probably use some of it for other stuff but it gives the appearance of a top heavy organization.
It's the central office for the district. They probably have all of the administrative staff, transportation department, etc. in there.
Load More Replies...This is the most surprising. I didn't know Walmart ever closed a store.
they probably built a super Walmart nearby, thats the only time I see Walmart close a store.
Load More Replies...It's such a good use of private space that is empty being used for government purposes so we don't have to build.
The same can be said about industrial buildings. Depending on the industry and the functions and equipment that they will house, the buildings will be of appropriate size, shape and location. These are often found further away from populated areas, but are also boring to look at—it’s all for practicality and affordability. It’s cheaper that way, but also what if something explodes? That has to be easy to fix, all the while appropriate to contain it.

That's the same color green that come out once you've eaten at Taco Bell.
And then we have commercials which, among other things, have a huge focus on purposeful, targeted aesthetic. It has to represent the commerce that is happening there and, considering that the design can change drastically at any point, making it flexible is definitely a bonus.
Pretzelmaker, Now Avis/Budget Rental (North Little Rock, Ar)
I wonder if there is still a faint scent of pretzels still in the air or if your brain would just trick you into thinking you smelled pretzels baking

Former Pizza Hut Now An Asian Vegan Restaurant (Pinellas Park, Fl)
They're closing a lot of their sit down restaurants in favor of smaller, pickup and delivery only places because they're cheaper to run and most people order that way vs. going in to sit and eat pizza
Load More Replies...Oh no! the Lotus Casino expanded!!! (If you are a Rick Riordan fan, you know)
Rapid transformation of the local population, I suspect. Florida used to be overwhelmingly white, with some black people. Starting in the 1970s, more and more of Florida is predominantly immigrants and their children.
Load More Replies...And, so, sometimes you have very distinct, single-floor buildings with a “cap” for a roof, surrounded in concrete nothingness which served as a parking lot and drive-through before it became an adult entertainment club. Or something. But we all know that there was either a clown or a king dining there on the regular.
CVS Pharmacy Used To Be A Theatre, East Los Angeles, Ca
my cvs has a similar style to it too, but that building was built for a cvs.
Former Arby’s In Norfolk, Virginia
Domino's Used To Be A KFC, Albert Lea, Minnesota
Honestly I never would've made the connection that this used to be a KFC building.
While these are broad categories, there are more niche purposes for buildings that seem like categories of their own.
Consider KWK Promes’ “Safe House”, for instance. While it looks like a bomb shelter, it kinda sorta is as its purpose is to be a zombie bunker.
Or that one fake house in the city of Raleigh in North Carolina that is only a shell of a house, but actually hides the city’s pumping station. The only weird thing about it is that it doesn’t have a driveway or walkway.
Planet Fitness In A Former Circuit City. Phoenix, Az
This one seems like a reasonable match. It's been a while since I've been in a circuit city but the front entrance / window setup and the general size seem about right for a gym / exercise equipment.
I reckon it has been a while since you've been in a CC, seeing as how they went out of business in 2009.

was it something else before? Just curious cause all the Walmart Neighborhood Markets that I have seen built new look like this
For all the silly "censorship" (hint: it's obvious for a reason), I would really like to thank bored panda for allowing me to say what is really on my mind. No snark. It's surprising what you can get away with saying, if you really mean it.
r/notfoolinganyone a sub for people to act like teenagers hearing “dirty” words but applying the mentality to buildings that got a slap of rebrand to indicate the current business in residence. “Fnarr, fnarr, they said KFC but WE can still tell it was a bank”. Do these morons honestly believe most businesses waste even a moment’s energy on “OMG, we should rip the entire building down and rebuild because someone might realize it used to be a supermarket but we use it as a library!”
Plus it costs less to reuse a building than to replace it, both in materials and in environmental impact. I have found that whenever I have seen a well-known building "type" that is identified with a specific brand being re-purposed, after two or three looks I get entirely used to the building being what it was re-purposed for. For the most part I admire folks who can re-purpose a building and make it their own. And I am especially impressed with places that are beautiful now being used for a new business rather than being torn down, like the old banks and such.

We have so many of these in my city! Grand old buildings in highly embellished styles that are too expensive to build anymore are preserved and continued to be used. The Apple Store was a former Carnegie library and also former home of the historic society, the fireman's insurance building with the gold dome is a Starbucks, and an old downtown bank with gilding, marble pillars, etc is now a restaurant (a nicer one than the brew pub that used to be there for years).
