Safety and quality above everything, right? Alas! That’s not how the real world works. Caution, common sense, and genuine effort are sometimes completely ignored during construction projects, replaced by speed, shoddy workmanship, and risking your neck (sometimes very literally).

Whether due to a lack of skill, budget constraints, or a complete disregard for safety protocols, some construction workers spook the internet with the fruits of their labor. The very worst of the bunch end up on the r/ConstructionFails subreddit. This online community shames everything that’s related to construction gone wrong. Things that would probably make OSHA or any structural inspector mad and sweat with worry.

Whatever you might be thinking of, dear Pandas, we assure you—it’s a lot worse. Scroll down to see just how bad things can get. If we’ve got any architecture and design professionals in the house today, make sure you don’t faint. And don’t forget your hard hats!

As someone who works in vaults such as these, I would be PISSED at the incompetence of the people who set these rings. Instead of a rescue tripod for entry, now you gotta have a man basket and crane approved for lifting folks. On a side note, this one is either very new or very well maintained because that's pretty clean for storm water and HOLEY C**P! clean for sewerage.

If possible, move doorway to the right. Many codes state that Stair landings are required at top and bottom (with exceptions at top of interior stairs or in garage if door swings in, away from the stairs), and the stair landing must extend no less than three feet (>= 36") in the direction of travel. There is not handrail or hand grip to assist in stepping down to the top step. The steps seem to be varnished and quite slippery. Top step (bottom line)-a death trap.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that we at Bored Panda have seen this sort of reckless attitude towards building safety. A while back, we spoke to the team of structural inspectors at Alpha Structural, Inc., who shared their thoughts about safety, shoddy repair and building jobs, and contractors.

“There are many factors that can affect the repair of a home such as budget constraints, timing, accessibility of workspace, etc. For the most part, we would put the responsibility on the contractors that were hired to do the work,” they said.

This retaining wall is failing because they didn't install drainage to let the water through. Sealing the cracks is just going to make the problem worse by restricting the water flow even more. All the commenters saying they should have used mortar, cement, etc. instead know nothing about retaining walls, and their suggestions would have been just as failure prone (though less hideous) as the foam. The real solution it to tear this one out and redo it with actual drainage channels.

Subsidence I guess. A friend of mine in England had their house wall slowly move away until you could see daylight through it. House was built on a hill and the builders messed up the foundations. Seeing as how it was a load bearing wall it cost a heck of a lot to repair it.

“Most homeowners are not aware of the repair ‘methods’ used, especially when the work is under the home. For example, we’ve seen brick foundations that have been ‘retrofitted’ by bolting the framing to the brick walls. However, this doesn’t serve any purpose as the bricks can’t hold these bolts. Many times, the homeowner had no idea that there was any problem performing this type of retrofit on a brick foundation. Without trying to sound cliché, we can say the old maxim, ‘you get what you pay for’ holds true when selecting a contractor to repair, or upgrade your home’s foundation,” the Alpha Structural team explained to Bored Panda.

The condition of the soil supporting the home was so bad that, during our assessment, we found that the home was cracking and actually moving,” Ben Reinhart, from Alpha Structural, told Bored Panda.

“We are not alarmists in any sense but this was the first time we had to evacuate. Temporary shoring was put in the next morning to prevent the home from collapsing. The complexity of the repair required, getting a large rig on a steep hillside to excavate a 55’ deepened foundation, made this one of the worst and most challenging in our long history. Let’s just say if we were on a reality TV show, this episode would’ve been a season finale,” he shared the experience.

... could use a detachable handle here, that disconnects on one side, is turned outta way for the lid, and reconnects where it was taken away from... Planning with actual sizes, places, motions would be even better still, of course, but once you're beyond some deadline, you cannot just plan a handle elsewhere, or chose a shorter lidded John - likely, there's bureaucracy involved, which seems to be the main reason to work around avoidable problems instead of avoiding them. What a waste of ... thought, craft, material, and even anger, even the anger this may cause the owner to have is wasted. In case there's no bureaucracy involved, imagine what a total k**b the people musta been who build this shiddy place...

“Basic maintenance will keep your home strong for a long time to come. Our advice would be to clean out gutters, ensure you have downspouts that direct water away from your foundation and see that the hardscape (walkways, patios, etc.) and landscape grade away from the home,” the structural inspectors shared how to take care of your home.

“Most foundation problems are caused by water and poor drainage. If you look under your home, check to see that there is no earth to wood contact. Not only will moisture from the ground get to the wood and cause rot, it also allows for wood-destroying organisms to get to the framing of your home. Additionally, earthquake retrofitting is a cost-effective upgrade encouraged by not only engineering communities, but also local and state officials,” they told Bored Panda.

this multitasking toilet is conveniently located directly beside the door, so you can open the door while sitting on it, to yell at your kids to stop fighting and also retrieve “mail” that your youngest slides under the closed door while you’re pooping. Also convenient for when you run out of toilet paper, but of course you can yell until you’re blue in the face & nobody will answer you then….

Why is everyone concerned with the brackets? Metal rusts unless it has a galvanized coating. This issue is the broken piece...it couldn't hold the weight.

    Boo Vaher

Not only the broken 'bench'... this shower should not have passed code to start with. Why was the bench not fixed into the wall. Why was it not attached to the struts. Why were the struts metal, Why were the struts not long enough to support the full depth of the bench. Where is the sealant in the corners and the edges of the shower stall to stop water leak behind the shower and into surrounding areas? DIY construction? Building inspection not carried out or inspector paid off? Bottom line is, this shower was a failure at construction.

There was very clearly previously a floor there which has at a later point been removed to create a higher ceiling, and a Juliet balcony. I know I'm boring and not funny, but in the context of this thread, this isn't so much a mistake or an accident as a fairly good idea after a change to the property. Or at least, an explanation!

Ehhhhhhm, to be honest I suspect that's simply the lines from the concrete boxing. If the roof's underside is not going to be visible, the boxing is often done using quite rough timber, leaving lines.

For those who build cardboard houses. Yes, those are aerated concrete blocks resting on precast steel reinforced beams. On top of that you would pour concrete. So what you are seeing is indeed bricks. Just Google "teriva floor" it's basically the most widely used top floors in Europe, others are wood (not OSB plates - actual wood), precast concrete slabs or solid single slab poured concrete.

I have seen this happen before. Worked as an installer of these type of partitions. Every case where I saw this, the buyer figured that it was just cheaper to buy the pilasters they needed and cobble it together, than spend the money on buying a full panel. I used to own a company installing toilet partitions. I can even tell you why there's a gap at the bottom in the US, and why the doors are always gapped to leave a crack.
