I would understand giving money in a sepparate account for their grandkids without making it public, but when it comes to gifts and sweets, those should be shared equitably. My kid was once in a similar situation, as he only got a cheap toy (all I could afford at the time) while his cousin, of similar age, got an expensive tablet. It was a Cristmas stay at the grandparents house. He still remembers being hurt by this, after many years.

All kinds of things wrong here and the author is NTA. The father seems to be at the core of this. He seems to forget that his son suffered when his mother died and as the pain eases up over time, it never goes away. Then the father remarries but the son gets put on the back burner which is just totally wrong! So the step kids have allergies. Not fun. But you can't tell me they are allergic to everything on a menu. Restaurants deal with food allergies all the time. OP should not have to suck anything up for the sake of allergies or anything else. OP is every bit of value as the step siblings. Step mom must be very good at certain things for this garbage happening.

When you go to college stay in state because the tuition is so much cheaper than out of state unless you get one hell of a scholarship package. I know you're only 16 but if you haven't already start thinking about what you want to major in. Go to a community college the first 2 years to take all of the math, english, history or any of the c**p that has absolutely nothing to do with your major and RENT the books do not buy them. If you have any other relatives on your mother's side of the family maybe pick schools near them.

I find it hard to believe that the steps can't find ANYTHING to eat at OP's choice of restaurant. If my friends and I go to an Italian restaurant, our celiac friend can at least order an a la carte meat and veggies. I'd be interested to know how far the parents will take this business of "it's not fair to your siblings" OP will be old enough for R-rated movies in a year, old enough to drink in a few more after that (depending on the country), and other age-restricted things as well. Will they try to stop her/him then?

You are 16. Your dad has less power over you than you think. Next time, make plans to go out to eat directly with your uncle and don’t tell anyone. Have him pick you up at the curb and say “Going out to eat with uncle, back around 8:30, byeee!” If your dad gives you a hard time, remind him that you are16 and it’s weird for him to expect you to account for every moment.

I'm a stepparent and I would never consider trying to force myself onto the kids as a dad because the reality is I'm not and I don't have the early life bonding experience and that's ok . Because they are fascinating individuals and we have an awesome relationship with many overlapping interests. I feel it's because I consciously made a choice to be present and let them be themselves without forcing a "family" dynamic. Our relationships grew organically based on mutual trust and honest communication. At least I hope so 😜🤞 I just hope they have happy healthy lives for themselves. I think that this dad has a outdated and pointless view Families are pretty complex these days and tradition is actively hostile to changing.

I work in a hospital. Most d**g addicts are on Medicaid along with a lot of lower income. So your argument that d**g addicts would abuse it doesn't really hold up.

Speaking as someone who has a couple of deadly allergies: It could easily have been intentional. I'm always on the fence about telling people my allergies. On one hand, people who care about me can help me avoid the allergens. On the other hand, someone could easily murder me with that info. On the third hand (lol), some people don't care either way. My ex allergied me three times in one month. The last time, the ER doctor asked to speak to me alone, and asked me if I sure it was "accidental" at that point. I told him I was pretty sure it wasn't intentional, but I would be filing for separation nonetheless. I didn't have an Epi-pen the last time, and my ex walked away and left me alone after he thought I had passed out. I was conscious, but unresponsive, so I heard him walk away and I heard him watching YouTube videos in the other room. I don't know if he tried to kill me, but I know he didn't care if I died.

Ok. I'm going to offer a minor counterpoint to everyone who says the tradesperson made bad life choices. Firstly, he obviously tried to rip the lady off and he made her uncomfortable in the process, which is horrible business practice apart from any other criticisms you care to name. (Now for the 'buuuuut...') But we don't know that he can't afford the children he has (He complains that they cost a lot, but that doen't mean he can't afford to provide for them). Sure 5 kids is a lot, and in a perfect world they get a room each, but I grew up in a shared room with my brother and I believe it absolutely taught me valuable life lessons about sharing and respecting boundaries. TLDR: tradesperson is an a*s but lets not jump to conclusions about his own domestic situation.

For those that don't believe this story. I bought a home in bad repair when I was a single mother. I did do some things myself. When I sold the home I needed some tiling work done. The tiler that came round did the job and had been asking me personal questions, how much I bought the home for, how much I was selling the home for, did I get the money for the home off an ex husband. He seemed really mad that I bought it myself, no, I didn't get any money from my ex husband, I had a good paying job and I was selling it myself and I was "making $200K in fifteen years for doing next to nothing but buying a house". Do men talk to other men like that? Yeah, thought not. The repair man in this story wouldn't have done this to another man either.
