Vilifying an entire race and gender. You can be racist to white people, especially white men. But it cannot be the opposite. 

CNN can release a news article called “There’s Nothing Scarier Than Angry White Men”. If you replaced “white men” with “black people”, there would be public outrage and much consequence.

Black people can openly say “I don’t like white people” and it’s acceptable. A white person cannot say that about their own race without termination from their job, being deplatformed and deemed a racist. I think both of these attitudes towards one another are disgusting. I don’t feel that way about a race. It’s bothersome that someone would judge me just because of my skin color too. 

Progress on race issues begins when everyone has the same social behaviors and mutual respect. Not when one gets a special license to be hateful and the other is supposed to put up with it. Most things deemed “racist” are not about race anyway, it’s tribalism. A very natural thing for all of us. 

People with cultural similarities will always predominately flock together. Race is the first and most obvious commonality that make make a group of people flock together. In a diverse room, Christian’s will naturally flock together, blacks will flock together, gays will flock together and so on. 

Everyone, without exception or even admission, is most comfortable with people that are most like them from physical appearance to politics, interests, and beliefs. There’s countless studies on it. Instead of understanding and respecting the human condition, we normalize blaming and vilifying white people because they are the majority in the proverbial room.  .

When I had to leave town for a few days, I entrusted my husband with a seemingly straightforward task: watering the flowering vine plants I’d brought indoors for the winter. Easy enough, right? Water the pots, keep the plants alive. But when I returned, every last one of them was dead. Naturally, I assumed he’d forgotten or just skipped it altogether. Mildly irritated but trying to keep my cool, I asked him about it. To my surprise—and mild disbelief—he produced actual evidence to prove he’d been watering them like clockwork.

The plants didn’t show any signs of disease, and I couldn’t figure out why they had withered so quickly. Meanwhile, the houseplants on the wall above them seemed fine—until I spotted water dripping from their planters. Those were succulents, which shouldn’t have been watered at all. He swore he hadn’t touched them, yet somehow, they were soaked.

So I asked the obvious question: “If you didn’t water the succulents, how did all that water get there?”

And that’s when the truth came out. My husband—third-generation logger, a man who grew up surrounded by plants in the forest—had faithfully watered my flowering vines, but not the pots. Oh no. He’d been watering the pots closet to the ends of the vines which happened to be on the walls above them.

As if somehow the vines were going to reach down and lap up water like a dog from the nearest pot whenever they got thirsty.

The plants died, but I gained lasting insight into the inverse relationship between the simplicity of a task and my husband’s ability to complicate it.

The most unusual pet I’ve ever had while living in Iowa, in riddle form!

From the borders of endless ochre plains,
