No offence but this idea is outdated at best. Are you/your kid regularly swapping between vehicles with different shifting systems? Unlikely. Almost everybody drives just one vehicle, whether it is their property, or they have regular access to one (parents' car, work provided vehicle etc) and they learn whatever is necessary for that. If buying new or used, just pick a vehicle that matches your skills. Finally, manuals offer NO actual advantages other than personal satisfaction - EVERYTHING that can be done with a manual gearbox can be done faster, and more mechanically-efficiently, with an electronically controlled gearbox.
