As someone who was a year younger than most of my friends in college and was never invited to things after they all turned 21 because all they cared about was going to bars, OP is a full on a*****e. Did you know that not everyone’s priority at the reception is getting drunk? I basically lost my friends once they all turned 21 because they were suddenly “adults” who could legally drink in public, as if that’s the real sign of maturity and adulthood 🙄 Legal drinkers get just as messy and sloppy as underage drinkers (ask me about my sister’s wedding 😬) so not sure why OP is so worried about Mel’s behavior.

We get some nasty flash floods during monsoon season and many roads become inundated with water making it impossible for drivers to cross.

If the city doesn't have trash collection because you're living in an illegal shanty town that doesn't have approval to even be there, how do you "organise to remove trash"? With what? To where? These people don't have cars or money to pay for trash collection. Saying "I was poor and I still didn't live like this" totally ignores the massive disparity in poverty where your entire neighbourhood isn't even legally constructed, and you don't have electricity or running water. Where are they supposed to find those "couple of hours" a week? What do they NOT do to gain those hours? Do they not go to the local cistern to collect water by hand? Do they set aside the hours they normally spend washing their clothes by hand?

They have literally zero sewage system or trash disposal system. Ok not zero but it’s about several decades behind.

I lived in L.A. in the seventies. Back then, we had smog days, where children and adults with respiratory issues were warned not to go outside for long periods because the smog was so bad. I remember going to camp in the mountains, and you could literally see where the smog level was as you were driving back down to the lower elevation. Because of how bad the smog used to be, you would never get a picture of the area as clear as this. Thanks goodness for the catalytic converter, environmental regulations, the ban on the sale of leaded gasoline, and all the progress we’ve made in the last 50 years. If we hadn’t made that effort, just refer to the pictures in this article from both China and Russia to get an idea how our skies would’ve looked by now.

Sure, if everyone had 10 children that may be the case, it would add up. The odd couple having lots of kids when the total birth rate in most the developed world is below replacement level, isn’t going to cause a catastrophe. We also don’t know how they live, for all we know they are vegan, grow their own produce and use reusable nappies. Besides, that’s not even the point of the post. Their environmental foot print doesn’t have anything to do with whether you invite them to family events or not.

China has a larger population than India and America is far, far behind. About 331million in America compared to 1.4 billion in India.

The answer is in that ‘couple of hours’. Poverty is a thief, it saps time, will, motivation. At some point you just don’t have enough left in you (or the actual time) to even bend over to pick up trash.
