There's a reason I hold my current store's leadership team in such high regard. It's blatantly obvious(and the store leader outright admitted he had) that each of them has done the grunt work in the past. They know exactly what can annoy the workers and they try their hardest to avoid that happening. And I have even seen them jumping in consistently to help out on the bottom level. From pushing freight, to jumping on the checklanes, to helping with online orders. They are the current reason I stick around despite the grumping and grousing you'll see in my comment history. If at any point they leave, however, I am gone. Corporate already destroyed the last of my goodwill towards them.

Common myth. I work as an engineer now, but I did all of those jobs when I was young. Don't make this assumption about all bosses. However it is easy to spot the ones who didn't. They are the ones treating you this way. Some of us remember it and appreciate everyone for the job they do. Think about it. What would shut down our plant the fastest? The answer is if the janitors stopped doing their job. Not me and my job, but the janitor. I think about this every time I see them, and I thank them for doing the worst job in the place.

@OhForSmegSake: What the f**k. Do they think people only need to eat every 6 months? I'm lucky mine I well funded, they have a food bank downstairs where people can load up with food. Upstairs they serve three community suppers every week. Anybody can come and the food is as nutritious as it is delicious. They also offer cooking classes get people in contact with housing. If you're housebound they will even deliver. Our food bank is beloved and we'll supported by all the businesses in town. I wish I knew how ours got the funding it needed, so I could tell you, but it's absolutely wrong that they are so underfunded they can only feed someone every 6 months. That's so f****d and has to change.

Yep. I’ve paid way more in bank fees this year than friends who make twice as much as I do. Not to mention having to buy smaller quantities of things (4 rolls of TP instead of 24) so paying more per item. If I’m short on a bill payment they charge me more so now I’m even more behind. I wish I knew how much extra fees I’ve paid over my lifetime for being broke.

Oh this needs to be number 1. I went through pretty bad poverty years ago- dumpster diving for food, stealing from neighbour's veggie patches and fruit trees, begging for $$ on the street just to keep a roof over our head. Recently the main earner in my household lost their job and I've already found myself eating one meal a day to make things stretch, looking at what I own that I can sell, taking notice of who nearby grows fruit and veggies. I dont feel the hunger pangs anymore and I've lost 10kg in the last 2mths. We're not even desperate for food or money yet but I'm already in poverty mode.

When I was 10 years old, my grandma was watching my younger siblings and me while our parents were at a weekend-long work conference. We were sitting in the living room eating pancakes, and my siblings were watching cartoons while I read the newest Harry Potter book, which had just come out the day before. My brother asked my grandma for more pancakes and she started to get up. I was only half paying attention because I was engrossed in my book, but out of the corner of my eye, I felt like she was taking longer than usual. She tried to get up, but her leg wouldn’t move. She tried to pick it up with her hands, but one of her hands wouldn’t move. I knew something was wrong and I put down my book. Then she fell out of her chair onto the floor. I screamed and she tried to tell me that she was fine, her leg had just fallen asleep and she tripped, but her voice was coming out all slurred and only half of her face was moving. I recognized signs of a stroke from The Baby-Sitters Club. I ran into the kitchen- she had no cell phone back then- and called 911. Well, first I called my best friend, the only phone number I could remember, and asked her mom if I need to dial an area code before 911. THEN I called 911. Meanwhile, my siblings got the handyman who was mowing the backyard to come in and help out. The ambulance arrived and they took her to the hospital, and I don’t remember much else. My best friend’s mom must have somehow gotten hold of my parents because they did eventually show up at the hospital. But here’s the good news: because she was treated so quickly, she made a full recovery and is still alive and in good health almost 20 years later!

The day I had my son. I was 34 weeks and was feeling great but something felt different. I ended up going to the ER and having an Emergency C section. I was told that if I hadn’t listened to my gut, my son most likely wouldn’t have survived and I probably wouldn’t have either. But here we are, healthy and happy!
