I knew a cardiac surgeon that drove the 20+ year old Honda Civic he had in college. It was well maintained cosmetically and mechanically. I still have my '04 Explorer and keep it well maintained. It's a body on frame build, all wheel and four wheel high and low drive and four wheel independent suspension. They don't make them like that anymore

I am an accountant, and I am still waiting to figure out what else I can do. This is why college students should not be pressured to pick a major when they first start college at 18 years old. I had not clue how much I would hate doing it until my late 20s.

Oh my goodness, I’ve got a story for this!

There was a guy in a couple of my electives in secondary school, and I used to sit near him in home ec (he was the only boy). He was *extremely* quiet, very shy, and didn’t really talk to many people, but I used to chat with him before class. It was s**t talk, to tell you the truth, “did you do the homework?” “Are you ready for the exam?” “Is Ms (teacher name) in today?” Sometimes I’d go as far as asking about the weekend, but mostly I asked him really stupid, boring questions.

A few years later, I was in college and this guy had gotten BUFF! He had also gotten really confident in himself and approached me in a bar in a different city. I had to do a double take, I hardly recognised him!

We got to chatting and he told me that I was the only person who ever made an effort to chat with him. He said he was really depressed and shy, and he felt so lonely in secondary school, but he always looked forward to home ec because at least we’d have our little chats there.

Naturally, when he told me this, I burst into tears.

He seems really happy now! I wish I could say we’re married, but no, he’s got a girlfriend and I imagine she’s lovely if she’s anything like him! I still run into him when we go home for holidays and stuff, and our conversations have gotten much more long winded!

If you went to the hospital with a heart attack, would you want your care to be directed by someone whose only professional qualification was an MBA? But, no, not even a management degree. The joker in question here had a degree in theology (which sadly had no effect on his ethics).

Depends on the liberal art degree I suppose. With a Law degree you can be a lawyer. A PhD in art history you can be an academic, a docent, a curator, etc. With a degree in art and human computer interactions you can be a UX designer. Master's in Education, you can be a teacher. The list goes on and on. Before you ask, yes I do have a liberal arts degree. Two of them in fact. And yes I am fully employed and make very good money. Although I work as an engineer, so probably not a good example for this.

Retired nurse. Thankfully, one of the nice ones. Co-workers and families loved me. But, I've seen too many younger know-it-all nurses who needed to learn that just because you have a degree doesn't mean you know everything. And, I was happy to take them down a few notches. Don't come on my floor acting like you're God's gift to the medical field because I'll make sure you get knocked off that self-imposed pedestal right quick. I've done it to a few doctors in my time, too. Leave your ego in the parking lot and take care of your patients.

I had to bring my kid to one off my first classes. He took my syllabus and drew a picture of my instructor. That teacher still uses that copy of the syllabus in his class. He shows off my kid's picture and give extra credit to anyone who draws another picture of him.

nowadays teachers are forced to put students through even if they're not passing the class. The principal often insists on it so the school doesn't look bad. Parents are bad about this too, their precious darlings can do no wrong, you need to pass them, it's obviously your fault.

I agree with you but also whatever happened to having a child repeat the grade or special education if they need a slower learning environment. There were a few kids in my hs that Def shouldn't have been in the grade level they were at. If you failed a class they sent you to summer school which was a joke, anyone could pass those classes. Some teachers are having a hard time because other teachers are letting them pass when they aren't ready. Then you've got high school teachers having to teach things those kids should've learned in grade school plus their own curriculum. I'm not a teacher or anything but even when I was in school it was disappointingly easy to graduate.

I had to stop reading this. I am so sad that None of these teachers even thought about the kids might have ADHD or other issues. I have said "dumb" things because I blurt out words before I think. Also kid's minds can race out of nervousness or being overwhelmed even being sleep deprived! Seems to ne that most of these horrible teachers are dumb one's.

The whole class, " Teacher you haven't told us our opinion yet." Used to western students I didn't realise Chinese teachers would usually give them the official party opinion on the issue.

Where is the accountability of the parents? Some of these examples point to neglect - parents need to be involved with raising their children, spending time with them and teaching common sense & at minimum the basics about the world they're growing up in.
