I've written several books and dozens of short stories. It was all fun and games until I tried to get published. The process took over all of my free/writing time, and nearly burned me out on the whole process. It's just a slog of tediously marketing yourself to make a sale. I eventually indie pubbed my books and stopped submitting short stories. Never make a sale, but I still enjoy the craft. Some parts of life are too important to commodify. Now if you enjoy writing AND promotions, then you're off to a good start.
