It's unusual to have to wait that long. In general, universal healthcare works well. The UK Conservative government has tried to make the NHS so bad that people are forced into private healthcare. Hopefully the new government wil repair it to what it should be. The fact that universal healthcare is done BADLY in some places does not make the principle of universal healthcare a bad idea. Remember, the US spends MORE tax per capita on healthcare, adn on top of that there's the insurance/private healthcare. Ireland has a weird system but it's basically universal healthcare for chonic conditions. My mother had a lump, got checked, the following week had the biopsy, the next week got the results and was on chemo within a few days. 2 weeks from the first appointment, after the 30euro for the first doctors appointment, her treatment was free until she died. At every step she was treated as per the gold standard protocol for her type of cancer.

Doubtful. In the UK (not just England), he'd move to the front of the queue for cancer treatment and it certainly wouldn't get to this point. Best of all, no-one has to worry about paying for cancer treatment at a time when they probably can't work. Don't believe everything the US Government tells you to justify not giving it's citizens free healthcare even though they can afford it. The NHS isn't perfect by a long shot, but being able to call an ambulance in an emergency without worrying about how to pay for it afterwards is awesome. If you looked up this guy, you'd know this was in fact in the US and his friends and family had to fundraise to pay off his $50,000 medical bill for the operation as his insurance didn't cover it all.

There's a case study of a construction worker who drove a narrow pipe right through his foot. Rushed to hospital in screaming agony, the worst pain he'd ever felt in his life. But when they get the boot off, what do they find? The pipe had passed harmlessly between his toes and he was completely uninjured. Yet before this discovery he was genuinely in terrible pain. It *looked* like he had been impaled so he expected pain, and his brain had prioritised that information over the nerve signals that were telling it the foot was normal.

TBF there are actually suprisingly few American accents. Britain has something like five times as many distinct local accents as the contiguous USA. This is because the US is a young country which grew up alongside the railways and so has few pockets of isolated populations, though there are a few - the "Pennsylvania Dutch" and old Martha's Vineyard accents being the classic examples. But obviously, everyone has an accent.

England is, indeed, a country and not an island. It *shares* an island with Scotland and Wales. The UK, on the other hand, is several islands including about a third of the island of Ireland.
