There are several memes just on this thread mentioning British colonialism. Not excusing any of the awful things done by either country but to imply it's some how covered up or not talked about is utter rubbish.

Fun story, but not entirely true. Yes, the word is based on medieval mercenary warriors, but the word itself is much newer: it's from the early 1800s, not from the Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages they called them tipendiarii (stipendiarie), soliderii (soldiers) or mercennarius (mercenaries).

If the person they’re talking to seems dangerous, then an “ok” sign could be a good idea because they won’t know anyone signaled for help and will be less likely to escalate. Also, as long as everyone in the group has agreed on what it means, it doesn’t really matter what it’s universally considered.

So yes, did some people know, absolutely, but I think it's unlikely that it was common knowledge for everyone in a position of authority.

Tested for that and actually caught that I had an under active thyroid. He said it was the first time he'd ever found an under active thyroid because someone was losing weight... p.s. Stomach upset went away on its own.
