It really makes me wonder just how many talented artists existed and then disappeared without the world ever finding out about them, just because they didn't got any limelight because they were poor or female or persons of color or just unfashionably ugly.

I was thinking the same thing - it's not dirt cheap. The prices sound mid-range to me-- fine for a middle-class hobbyist with no major financial commitments, but pretty steep for someone with constraints (low salary or with major expenses such as a family/mortgage/student loans, etc.).
