Common myths and misconceptions are all around us. We might not even realize we're wrong until we're wrong. And… some facts aren't actually facts! [Dramatic gasp!] Reddit user Threedotsguy wanted to find out what widely known ‘facts' their fellow redditors know are wrong, and the educational thread went viral. Check out which myths got debunked, upvote the ones you didn't know were false, and share what other ‘facts' you know to be balderdash in the comments, dear Pandas.

Once you start going down the ‘how do I know anything for sure' rabbit hole, it's hard to stop. Before you know it, you might even end up as a philosopher with a PhD and a dozen published books about the theory of knowledge. But one thing that we really have to ask ourselves is why people tend to believe far-fetched facts, flimsy myths, and fake news.

Dr. Bobby Hoffman, psychologist and author of 'Hack Your Motivation' and 'Motivation for Learning and Performance,' explained to Bored Panda the effects that social pressure and peer influence have on our beliefs, what biases we as human beings tend to have, and what we can do to change our existing (potentially flawed) conceptions about the world. Read on for our full interview with Dr. Hoffman.

"People with mental illness are NOT, in fact, more likely to be violent than the rest of the population. They're actually slightly less so, but MUCH more likely to be the victims."

The public tends to exaggerate the strength of the link between mental illness and violence. What's more, acts of violence by the mentally ill are sensationalized by the media. Research shows that the mentally ill are, in fact, more often victims than perpetrators of violence.

Person Asks Others To Share What Widely Accepted Facts They Know Are Wrong, And Here Are 30 Of The Most Interesting Responses That the McDonald's hot coffee lawsuit was absurd and unjustified. That coffee wasn't just hot, it was HOT -- spilling it in her lap, which should've just ruined Stella Liebeck's pants and maybe given her first-degree burns, caused THIRD-degree burns and fused her genitals shut. She needed not only skin grafts but horrifyingly painful, expensive reconstructive surgery. When Liebeck initially contacted McDonald's, all she asked was that they cover her $20,000 hospital bills. They counter-offered for $800, so she took them to court. Even then, she didn't ask for punitive damages. The jury heard about McD's insulting counter-offer, and the fact that their coffee had seriously burned seven hundred people already (they damn well knew about the danger, they just didn't care), and were so incensed that they added the extra millions on their own. The only reason people think of that case as an example of sue-happy American culture gone wrong is that McDonald's poured millions into a smear campaign after the fact. If you ask me, it was actually our justice system working exactly as it should.

It's worse than is even described here. At certain places, she was burned TO THE BONE. She never denied that she spilled it on herself, just that it was SO MUCH hotter than it needed to be. Most places didn't serve it that hot, and it wouldn't have caused so much damage had she spilled it on herself if she'd gotten the coffee elsewhere.

I was burned at this very same McDonalds about a month prior. It spilled on my legs while my boyfriend was driving. He pulled over due to my screams and I took my scalding pants off in the middle of a busy street. Legs were burned but not like this poor lady.

It was horrific and despite the verdict, she only walked away with about 600k after appeals, which her lawyers got a giant chunk of. It's a sad commentary on the dumbing down of humanity when there are still people who don't know how seriously burned this woman was or say things like "coffee is supposed to be hot, duh." There's a difference between the temperature it takes to prepare things, like food or coffee, and the temperature that is safe for human consumption. The coffee that Macdonald's served wasn't safe for human consumption. The coffee she was served was 190° F and liquids at that temperature 3rd degree burns happen immediately. In the 10 years prior to the Stella Liebeck case, more than 700 people filed claims against McDonalds after suffering serious burns to their mouths and throats from their coffee, so the coffee that was being served wasn't safe for consumption. So Mickee Davies, Tiari, Pompilius, your defensive stance of McDonalds is weird. Everyone knows coffee is hot, but when actually drinking it causes severe burns, the fault lies with whoever served it.

Person Asks Others To Share What Widely Accepted Facts They Know Are Wrong, And Here Are 30 Of The Most Interesting Responses "That humans are the only animals that have self-awareness."

The mirror test is often used as a way to see whether or not an animal possesses self-awareness. During the test, researchers place a dot or a mark on a subject and then put the animal in front of a mirror. They then wait and watch to see if the animal investigates the mark.

Some animals who have successfully passed this test are dolphins, elephants, chimpanzees, magpies, and others. The newest research indicates that self-awareness and sense of sense are far more widespread in the animal kingdom than previously thought.

True sense of awareness can't be tested in any way. Fun fact: sense of awareness in humans hasn't been yet proven to exist, and it's existence is purely a philosophical debate. (yes, I'm talking about whether humans are really alive or aren't)

I've always wondered whether a twist on this test would be to use a window and rather than see themselves, show them another of their species. For example, my cats have no interest in looking at themselves in the mirror, but if they see a cat outside. Even if they can't smell them, they react. Perhaps Cats are self aware, but just don't care about how they look.

I think the same - my dogs don't think there is another dog in the mirror past puppyhood. They learn it is not. They also have investigated marks on mirrors. One dog used the mirror door on my oven to watch me doing things while she was behind a kitchen unit. I suspect that many animals simply don't care about how they look and maybe this is more about human vanity.

dogs mostly fail the mirror test on account of the fact that they identify themselves and one another through smell. Sighthounds are far less likely to fail, but they're the exception, not the rule. This doesn't mean most dog breeds are not self aware.

We are not the only animals that have self-awareness. We are not even the only animal that blushes - or needs to, despite Mr Twain's quote. Animals can show embarrassment. Anyone with a dog can tell you that.

Dr. Hoffman said that peer influence and social pressure are instrumental in the beliefs that we hold onto.

"For the most part, social media is a perfect outlet to commiserate with your peer group and gain acceptance for your beliefs, justified or not. Research shows the proclivity for us to participate with higher frequency with those people and outlets that support our belief structures. This phenomenon applies to a range of beliefs including politics, epistemology, and those requiring social proof (e.g., product reviews)."

He stressed that objectively evaluating our belief structures is almost impossible because of confirmation and myside biases.

"Confirmation bias means we seek out confirming evidence while rejecting or discounting evidence that refutes our belief structures. Chinn and Brewer (1993) outlined seven ways we respond to anomalous data that include: (a) ignore the anomalous data, (b) reject the data, (c) exclude the data from the domain of theory A, (d) hold the data in abeyance, (e) reinterpret the data while retaining theory A, (f) reinterpret the data and make peripheral changes to theory A, and (g) accept the data and change theory A, possibly in favor of theory B."

In brief, human beings selectively filter information that supports our intentions. Meanwhile, myside bias is similar to confirmation bias and makes it difficult for us to accept alternatives to our own attitudes and opinions.

"Myside bias operates similarly as we believe that our knowledge, process, and worldviews are superior in quality and accuracy than those views we do not hold. This explains the phenomenon of driving that I often use to operationalize myside bias. The person traveling at a greater speed than you is a 'jerk.' The person driving slower than you is an 'idiot.' Only your speed is the correct speed according to your views. However, what are other people thinking about your driving patterns?"

That estimate is an average, which means it accounts for high infant/child mortality. Lots of ancient people lived to their 80s and older. If you made it to 30, chances were good you would make it another 30+ years. The belief that people from the past would be shocked to see somebody that's 60 or 70 years old is false. Average life expectancy isn't the same as maximum lifespan. While the average has greatly increased over the years because of advances in technology and better nutrition, the maximum has pretty much remained stable throughout.

Average lifespan was brought down by high child mortality, usually from illness. If you made it to adulthood and weren't drafted into the war and didn't die in childbirth you had a decent chance of making it to old age.

Not just that. There are many medical issues that were fatal back then, but easily treated today. Almost all types of bacterial infections fall into this category.

Event later in History. While browsing my family tree I can point epidemy/famine by a lot of sudden deaths. But a lot of my ancestors in 18th 19 th centuries, died between 70 and 90 yo. But when you look at their 8 to 14 brothers and sisters... at least half of them did not reach 10yo. There is one exemple I remember: a couple with 12 children, only 2 girls became adult, one died giving birth to her first child (my ancestor), her sister lived 83.

Thank you so much for posting this. This is one of the myths that bothers me the most. Related to this, from everything we know, the average age of marriage was early-to-mid 20s, when people were mature enough. Enough of this propaganda that 13yo girls are ready for marriage and sex with an adult male because that is how it used to be and is natural. It is not. In most hunter-gatherer societies, girls don't even start menstruating until they are 15-17 years old (as one would expect).

In reality, most birds don't do that. If you help a baby bird back into its nest, as long as you try not to touch the nest a lot, then everything should be fine. Papa and Mama birds don't recognize their young by their smell, explains All About Birds. So don't be afraid to put the tiny bird back in its nest. However, if the nest is destroyed, you can make a new one, put the chick inside, and wait to see if the parents come back. If they don't come back and you're absolutely sure that the chick would be alone, it's best to bring it to a wildlife rehabilitator.

It is possible that the baby bird was outside the nest because the mother had kicked it out in the first place though, and if you put that baby bird back the mom will kick it out again (usually because it's the weakest link). However you should definitely try to put it back regardless, since it might just have fallen out.

I actually found a baby sparrow that had been orphaned because of a tree being cut down. I knew we had a mother sparrow who had recently hatched babies in our birdhouse. I waited for the mom to leave, sneaked up a ladder and slid the one I found in her nest with the three others and she took care of it, too. So it -is- possible to sneak one in to a foster/adoptive family so long as you know precisely what bird it is and the babies are close enough in age.

Dr. Hoffman suggests that in order to change our current conceptions about the world, we have to have compelling reasons to change. "Without a reason, we continue to harbor beliefs that may not be justified. In other words, for most issues there is no need for belief revision, especially when the warped beliefs endure us to our peer group."

The American Psychological Association states that fake news spreads more quickly than real news and reaches more people than the truth.

“Fake news has important implications in politics, but also in areas such as health and nutrition, climate science, and financial information,” MIT professor David Rand pointed out the dangers of believing unreliable information.

Regarding not rinsing with water, my dentist told me this when I was a teenager, and after I started doing it there was a noticeable difference in the look and feel of my teeth. Spit out every bit of toothpaste you can after brushing, fine, just get in the habit of not rinsing with water. Your teeth will thank you for it.

Person Asks Others To Share What Widely Accepted Facts They Know Are Wrong, And Here Are 30 Of The Most Interesting Responses ‘NASA spent $$$$ inventing a pen that worked in space and the Russians used pencils.’ Total bollocks. The Fisher Pen Company was independent and developed its ‘space pen’ with zero investment from NASA. American astronauts began using mechanical pencils in space. Tiny fragments of graphite, and graphite dust floating around the spacecraft was not ideal because graphite is conductive. It’s also combustible, so everyone was keen to find an alternative. Fisher patented its first ‘zero gravity’ pen in 1965, and in 1967 NASA began using it. By 1969 Russia were also buying them for their space missions. Reportedly both NASA and The Soviet Space Company received the same discount for their bulk purchases.

Yes, because graphite is electrically conductive. If a piece of it gets into electronic devices, it can cause a short circuit. (Most electronics used in space have coatings to prevent this, but not 100%.)

While most victims of the coronavirus tend to be older, everyone can fall prey to the disease, no matter their age. According to the CDC, 40 to 49-year-olds have a 10 times bigger death rate than the 18 to 29-year-old comparison group. The most vulnerable group is everyone over the age of 85: they are 630 times more likely to die from the virus and 13 times more likely to be hospitalized than the comparison group. Rand proposes that the reason people might believe false facts has less to do with our internal biases and more with the way we think. Or rather don't think. According to him, people who tend to believe false information are actually individuals who don't think carefully. Or, in other words, we get duped by falsehoods because we rely on ‘lazy' thinking and make assumptions we don't even know are assumptions.

There is such a vast amount of information flooding our day to day lives that it's a chore to separate fact from fiction. While the internet might be a blessing, it's also a curse because what's popular on Google or social media might not be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

However, there is a way around this issue. BBC Future writes that randomly exposing people to a whole range of views keeps challenging their beliefs and helps them create a much more detailed understanding of events. One that's much closer to the truth. And further away from myth.

Billy Joel once remarked that he is thinking about so many other things while he is in front of 10,000 people flawlessly playing piano and harmonica singing "Piano Man" because the neural pathways literally run themselves and allows him the brain power for critical thought unrelated to his performance.

The misconception comes from the fact that the word "schizo" means "split." However, this is in reference to Eugen Bleuler describing the rupture in the person's thinking process and emotional response when he coined the term in the 1920s. Sometimes, sponsors would pay extra for a fight to the death, however, most often, gladiators fought until they ran out of stamina or were wounded. Dangerous? Yes! Deadly? Rarer than you'd think.

The Gladiatorial fights and exhibitions varried alot. Some were about the butchering of old and weak prisoners by gladiators or animals, and sometimes it was about the rape of "exotic" women prisoners brought from outside the domain of the Roman empire.

That is not per se the case. Even slaves could get citizenship. Some slaves were treated poorly , but usually wealthy Roman were not so cruel to completely destroy their people. In ancient Rome their was this constant encouragement for Roman citizenship and a lot of enslaved people were treated with dignity in so far they could keep even their religion. A lot of diggings in Herculaneum showed that a lot of former slaves lived there in comfort.

However, in the early years of Christianity, they weren't just burnt at the stake or thrown in the arena with wild animals. They were forced to fight with other (usually Pagan) slaves to the death. This is primarily where the idea came from.

*sigh* while it is true that "Gladiators" killed each other much more rarely than portrayed.... the Games were also used as a means of execution, and cheap slaves were bought when that wasn't an option, to be killed in a number of different ways. most commonly by some random beast. Lions, bears. Whatever. So long as it was bloody.

That you have to put something in the mouth of a seizing person so they don't swallow their own tongue. DO NOT DO THIS. EVER.The CDC explains that you shouldn't put anything in the person's mouth because this can injure their teeth or jaw. You should also not hold the person down or try to stop their movements; don't give them mouth-to-mouth breaths, and don't give the person any food or water until they are fully alert. What you can do is ease a person having a seizure on the floor, turn them onto one side to help them breathe, put something soft under their head, and remove their glasses if they're wearing any.

but usually their mouths are already closed by the time they are seizing so prying their mouth open to put something in it to keep it from closing hard doesn't really make sense.

Uhg. okay. so why the f**k would you be giving somebody having a seizure CPR is beyond me. Also, the way I train my guards is, to put something padded under their head. If you have nothing (which in their circumstances is the vast majority of the time.) then clear the area and do what you can to protect the head. it's exceedingly rare for people to be flopping around like you see in television or movies.

You should prevent them from going near glass doors/windows or stairwells. They can bite part of their cheek or tongue and swallow that. They can get quite injured if they have uncontrolled seizures and do not let people like their coworker know so they can recognize the early signs and know what to do. Someone in my office was too private or proud (or who knows) to let anyone know this was possible, she started seizing and ended up falling down some stairs. That didnt need to happen.

Eratosthenes (240 BC) has measured the Earth's circumference by the help of math: angle difference of shadows in 2 different cities at the same time gives the scope of Earth then adding the distance into calculation. A small error is acceptable since he had no idea about Earth's geoid shape. He thought it was a sphere.

The British who were alive during WWII often had very bad teeth and so did their children. This was because of food shortages and the lack of calcium and vitamins.

I've always heard that the national healthcare wait for a dentist was so bad that people just opted to not go to the dentist. And the US puts fluoride in their water but UK doesn't.

I feel sorry for the Bald Guy's scalp and face, if that's what he believes. granted, most cartridge razors don't even come sharp, or the blade is so cheap that it's edge is lost before a single pass. keep in mind that hair is tougher than copper wire of the same thickness. Try a real razor (your (great?) grandpa's safety razor, for example) and you'll see. a merkur 34c will set you back ~$40 and is a good, common starter razor, though I've followed my dad to a Muhle R89 for my daily shave. Before you balk too much, keep in mind that even the 'expensive' feather blades come out to about forty cents a razor.

The trick is, after you've used it, push the razor along your inner forearm (no hair) the opposite way to shaving, so you won't cut yourself. This will get off the elements that are clogging up the blade. Do it about 30 times and it will be clean again. It's how barbers do it when they slide their razor on the leather strip for the same effect.

Uh.... the stroping (what your talking about) doesn't actually sharpen a straight razor, and you have to strop both sides of the straight. the purpose is to align the edge (which, under close examination is very jagged and toothy) into a more straight edge. you need to do both sides, or the edge will be even worse.

I find it funny that people are saying that by taking care of their razor they are literally using them for a year to a year and a half, and other people apparently are offended by that and have to insist that they are wrong. because all those 'research' articles couldn't possibly have been funded by razor manufacturers?

Person Asks Others To Share What Widely Accepted Facts They Know Are Wrong, And Here Are 30 Of The Most Interesting Responses That if you have a cold, you should get lots of Vitamin C. This is completely down to one scientist named Linus Pauling who had a theory that massive doses of Vitamin C would cure colds. Subsequent studies have shown he was wrong and any benefits are minimal at best. Yet I still get everyone telling me to drink orange juice whenever I get a sniffle. However, Harvard Health Publishing states that taking at least 200 mg of vitamin C each day seemed to reduce the duration of cold symptoms by around 8 percent in adults and 14 percent in kids. Or, in other words, around one less day of being ill. While it doesn't seem like a lot, it could have a huge effect nationwide or worldwide.

Vitamin C is a very good antioxidant, helping cells renew better, also efficient against oxidative stress syndrome for eg. Thus helping the body renew faster, and be stronger to fight off a cold or other health issues. Also very good in cancer treatment for the same reason. Also, because it dissolves in water and not fat, you can not overdose, just per out the excess. So yeah, when you have a cold, buy ascorbic acid ( a.k.a. vitamin C ) ín pharmacy, put a pinch in a glass of water and drink it.

In the real world, it takes several minutes to knock you out, not the seconds you see in TV and movies. How quickly you're knocked out depends on your bodyweight, air circulation, the strength of the solution, etc. You'll stay knocked out by the chloroform for as long as you're breathing it. Once it's removed, however, recovering from the effects can take roughly 20 to 30 minutes during which you will feel nauseous and might even vomit. Headaches can last hours.

Person Asks Others To Share What Widely Accepted Facts They Know Are Wrong, And Here Are 30 Of The Most Interesting Responses Napoleon wasn't small. He was just the victim of good propaganda by the eventual winners. Napoleon was most likely around average height: 1.69 meters or just over 5’5”. The myth that Napoleon was short comes from two sources. First of all, the French inch (pouce) at the time was 2.7 centimeters while the Imperial inch was just 2.54 centimeters. So using the French measurement system of the time, Napoleon was 5’2” (aka '5 pieds 2 pouces') tall which is equal to the 'normal' 5’5”. Secondly, British cartoonist James Gillray was very much responsible for depicting Napoleon as being tiny leader prone to rage and the image stuck in the public's mind.

u aren't wrong. we have been selecting the genetic variants that produce more flesh and fewer seeds (tomato, just one example) for decades, but that's a hybridization process. GMP or GMOs are the products of genetic recombination or genetic engineering like BTCotton. they typically have a "foreign" gene which is not usually found in any of the wild-type cultivars. they can code for pesticide/herbicide resistance, antibiotic resistance and a few other traits.

They aren't dangerous, not as such, but it can definitely cause issues. A sad amount of crops is genetically modified to be resistant to pesticides so farmers can spray more of those; and the overall benefit of high amounts of pesticide sprayed into the environment and onto the produce we eat is certainly questionable. And with any kind of engineered plants the issue is that the pollen is impossible to contain, so it's very possible it will pollinate related plants in the vicinity and result in offspring that further propagates, upsetting the balance of the ecosystem.

Nobody says GMOs themselves are inherently bad or dangerous. The issue is the imbalance they create in natural order. If you modify a plant to resist a pest, whatever is the natural predator of that pest doesn't eat. And whatever eats that doesn't eat. Etc etc

Whenever someone tries that here in the UK they are told they are wrong. We have never had that rule and never will. Best story I can tell you is from a cousin who worked in a builders merchants. When the phrase 'The customer is always right' (He wanted to fit his own boiler) the manager called over one of the shops plumbers and got him to ask the guy a load of questions that would be considered basic to a plumber and central heating engineer. The guy didn't know a thing and the manager just said "Don't feel so right now hmm?" guy ended up hiring one of the plumbers to fit the system and he was very happy with the results

Everything you know about Attila the Hun. Attila the Hun was actually a super honorable, extremely well educated guy who spoke multiple languages, was said to be a child genius who excelled at war strategies, and as a leader always put his people first. He was known to go without status symbols and such because he believed that as a leader every one of his people should have them first, because it was his job to take care of them. He also spent a lot of his formative years in Rome in a sort of prince exchange created to make sure everyone got along. When the Roman Empire was falling, the Pope himself came to him and begged him to leave them alone. The Pope said that the empire would fall if he didn't. Attila wasn't Christian, and was definitely winning the war with way less men and resources because he was so intelligent. Even still he felt badly for them and recognized how big a deal it was for the Romans to send the Pope, so he agreed to end the war. He could have easily killed the Pope and continued to destroy the Roman Empire, but he was far too honorable and kind hearted. But we only hear the Roman Propaganda... Attila is and will always be one of the most amazing leaders in history!

Discipline is a positive and proactive method of TEACHING the child self-control, confidence, and responsibility without scaring the child. Some discipline techniques use 'praise and reward' systems. Whenever a child does something good, the parent will praise them, and since humans naturally want praise, the child will keep on doing good in order to receive praise. It can also be a time-sensitive thing. Punishment will usually end up with taking the child's devices away forever, but discipline will end up with no devices for 24 hours. Punishment is a more reactive method. It is making the child pay for their behavior in a negative way. The child who experiences punishment will think "I'm a bad child," and then they will lie to try to avoid punishment. The parent who uses punishment as a form of discipline will then be responsible for the child's actions, as punishment will create a cycle of lies.

Most children need both rewards and punishments. A punishment is any sort of negative consequence intended to reduce a behavior, like taking away toys for any period of time or restricting screen time. It doesn’t have to be mean or excessive.

Punishment/discipline does not cause fear. Abuse causes fear. Also, fear comes in many forms. You child should never be afraid that you'll hurt them, or emotionally demean/abuse them. However, they should be "afraid" of losing privileges or other consequences of bad behavior.

You should drink 8 glasses of water a day. The origin of this is not agreed upon but a lot of this liquid can come from what’s already in food. It also depends on physical activity, heat, body size, etc. There is no perfect amount. If you’re thirsty, drink water until you’re not thirsty anymore. That’s it.

Ironically enough, this 'fact' was popularised in the early days of the internet to demonstrate how quickly disinformation was spread via email. From Snopes: In a 1993 PC Professional article, columnist Lisa Holst wrote about the ubiquitous lists of “facts” that were circulating via e-mail and how readily they were accepted as truthful by gullible recipients. To demonstrate her point, Holst offered her own made-up list of equally ridiculous “facts,” among which was the statistic cited above about the average person’s swallowing eight spiders per year, which she took from a collection of common misbeliefs printed in a 1954 book on insect folklore. In a delicious irony, Holst’s propagation of this false “fact” has spurred it into becoming one of the most widely-circulated bits of misinformation to be found on the Internet.

Yes and No. Carrots can improve you eye health and helps maintain good eyesight due to the vitamins and minerals, particularly Beta-carotene in which our bodies then make Vitamin A. Whilst carrots won’t give you night vision, it can help in conditions of low light and general good eye health. It is estimated that every year 250,000-500,000 children become blind due to a vitamin A deficiency.

Thomas Edison did not actually invent the lightbulb. He just made a version that was inexpensive and more practical. The original lightbulb was made using the contributions of many inventors such as Alessandro Volta, Humphrey Davy, Warren De La Rue and Joseph Swan. The main reason why Edison’s version was so successful was because he was already known and he owned a large company.

The light bulb is complicated because it's many different parts. There was a man named William D. Coolidge, an African American, who invented the tungsten filament -- a key component to the light bulb. He worked in Edison's lab. My understanding is, it was this filament that was key to a commercially viable light-bulb (it didn't burn out right away) and maybe that's why Edison gets the credit (it came out of his lab). But it was a poorly credited African American man who solved the final piece of the light-bulb puzzle. I can easily imagine Edison took the concept which had already been invented and has his lab people improve upon it.

The filament was a later improvement on the product. However Edison was known for hiring black and women scientists, he cared about results and nothing more.

Actually the others did not last more than 30 min and at the time the official international committee overseeing it said it had to last at least 7 days. However Edisons one of the second one filed for a patten, the first was Maxim's bulb (which ours today are based on, not Edisons), but Edison paid a patton office clerk to hold up Maxim's application till his was ready.

Yes, but no. A good writeup here: https://slate.com/technology/2020/08/fertility-cliff-advanced-maternal-age-outdated.html --- the problem is the "35" (chosen for practical reasons long ago) is presented as "all fine before/ chaos and disease after" while the difference is gradual (E.g.: is waiting 6months for practical reasons OK? "Cliff" says "no", correct version says "let's look at the actual numbers").

Probably because left-handed people already have crossover neurological pathways because they have to function in a right-handed world. So their brains are already primed to learn to do a familiar task with a different brain region, routing around the damaged area.

"Touch" is a very complex sense with multiple specialized cells that measure cold, heat (separate senses! Capsaicin fools your sensory cells for heat-, and menthol those for cold), vibration, pressure... You also have a sense for the general position of your body parts. It's not perfect, but if you try to touch parts of your body (e.g. finger and toe) when your eyes are closed, you get pretty close. I think it's an extrapolation from a sense for the degree of muscle contraction plus a general (learned) estimate of the size of your body parts.

Sugar does not make you hyper. There is no such thing as a "sugar high." Kids going bonkers after having a big slice of cake can be explained very easily: They're in a situation where they're already excited (like a birthday party), they're overjoyed because they just got to eat a big slice of cake, and/or you've told them they'll go crazy if they eat all that cake and now it's just a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It takes 2x the water resources and 6x the amount of land to grow Organic with 3x the damaged produce to throw out. We would need 6x more land to feed the world in Organic farming than non-organic, and 2x the amount of water. It is very bad for the enviroment.

Jesus, this is so wrong. Using pesticides and artificial fertilisers, along with monoculture (growing the same crops in the same fields repeatedly) erodes the soil and eventually desertifies it. Organic farming which only uses nature and crop rotation helps to preserve the soil and the food tastes so much better.

This is wrong organic growing methods cause far less long term environmental damage. The problem with good is that genes from other species are being spliced into food without considering long term consequences. Human genes into tomato skins, fish genes into strawberries and other strange combinations.

it's all about the methods used. i think a better misconception to talk about is that like, you don't have to wash organic produce because there's nothing bad on it. organic still uses pesticides and fungicides, they're just naturally derived and not straight chemicals.

The myth that glass is actually an extremely viscous, slow-flowing liquid, and that's why old windows are thicker on the bottom. No, it isn't. It's very clearly a solid. It's a disordered, non-crystalline solid, but still solid. Old windows are thicker on the bottom because they were designed that way.

This also applies to the 'circles' and 'bubbles' in the old glass. It's what you get when someone made it by hand. There's also a whole thing where they have to control how fast it cools off or it'll explode. If you ever get the chance to watch people do glass-work you should see them do it, it's rather fascinating!

Hitler was only vegetarian by coincidence. Whether it was made part of a deliberate propaganda campaign or not. By at least 1935, he already started to fear he will not live very long due to mainly a stomach-related illness that was causing him uneasiness. He followed all sorts of nonsense remedies. And by 1945 was so delusional and mentally ill due to, in big part, to his personal doctor, Theodor Morell, whom his girlfriend, Eva Braun, even suspected might be an Allied spy poisoning Hitler. Anyway, back to the point, Hitler from early on started believing that only eating light foods, such as vegetables, and not meat helps with his stomach pains. So he just kept with it.

Astronomer here! People always say Jupiter protects us from getting hit by asteroids because its larger gravitational pull attracts them (I believe it was on a certain popular astronomy show). In fact, this does not appear to be the case. See, while Jupiter does indeed interact with more things, it is both good and bad- some things hit Jupiter or get flung away, some things get flung directly at Earth that otherwise wouldn’t. Most famously, in 1770 Lexell’s comet passed closer to Earth than any other comet ever observed, missing us by just 6 Earth-moon widths. Turns out Jupiter flung it straight at us right before that. So yeah we almost died thanks to Jupiter, and good and bad comes from having it as a neighbor.

But is pholcids' venom extremely poisonous? Surprisingly, because they almost never bite, scientists have never bothered to conduct research to determine their venom's toxicity to humans . In 2004, the Discovery Channel show "Mythbusters" stepped in to fill this knowledge void. The team set out to coax a daddy longlegs spider into biting the arm of the show's co-host, Adam Savage. Their official conclusion? Myth busted. The spider was able to penetrate Savage's skin, and he reported nothing more than a very mild burning sensation from the venom that lasted just a few seconds

Yup...was the solid rocket booster that exploded. Sad thing is the rocket booster's manufacturers didn't want the launch to go ahead cause they were worried about the effects the cold would have on it, but the managers overrided the engineers.

Eating too many chocolates gives you diabetes. No sugar consumption will not directly cause diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused due to you own immune cells destroying your insulin producing cells in pancreas. Type 2 is due to resistance of your cell to insulin. If your diet is not balanced (you only eat high calorie sugary foods), you don't exercise and you end up getting obese you risk getting diabetes.

Fat causes insulin resistance which leads to hyperinsulemia which is where the glucose can't get into the cells because the fat in the cells block the access. This causes more and more insulin to be needed and too much glucose in the blood. Doctors give type 2 diabets (I'm one) tablets to bring down their blood glucose - but that is a symptom not the illness. Low fat plant based eating has been shown to reverse type 2 diabetes - and help type 1s cut down on the amount of insulin they need to use.

Hitler was not happy or unhappy over it. He was indifferent. On one side this now brings another nation into the war. However, he preferred to see the positives of this. Since he was the one who quickly jumped to declare war on the USA, and his alliance with Japan did not dictate that he had to do that. He saw a positive and a opportunity in it. Positive for him was, now he can attack American shipping unrestricted, which has up until that point kept the UK in the war. Opportunity he saw was in declaring war on the USA he shows good will to Japan, because he really wanted Japan to declare war on Russia too. Something they never did.

Correct. He was hoping that declaring war on the US would encourage the Japanese to declare war on Russia. Problem was, Russian and Japan wanted no part of another conflict with each other.

false. The sperms are mixed with the fluid from the prostate and then storded in the seminal vesicles under and behind the prostate.

That's not true either, the seminal vesicles produce the majority of seminal fluid but do not store the actual sperm. The actual sperms (before they mix with seminal fluid) are stored in the epididymis. When ejaculation occurs, they leave the epididymis, travel through the vas defrens, then mix with fluids from the seminal vesicles before mixing with more fluids from the prostate before being ejaculated

Many vitamin supplements don't work as the body can't work with the isolated units. A beta-carotene supplement actually gave rise to more cancer whereas beta-carotene in food helps stop it. Also the Vitamin C in apple juice is miniscule compared to eating the whole apple - there are compounds within the apple (including fibre) that enhance it.

Yeah...not for me. If I take those "One-A-Day" vitamins, I puke about five minutes later. Not sure what it is, but it's like clockwork. So I never get the chance to pee out the vitamins. XD But they're also usually not even needed except in rare cases that someone has a real deficiency that is diagnosed by a doctor. I have noticed over time that I'll get really strong cravings for oddball things like raw potatoes and I wonder if it's my body going "Hey get us some of that potato vitamin stuff." And the brain just going "F I N E."

Your body can only absorb so much of each vitamin, so yes take supplements if you are not getting enough in your diet. But there’s no point in taking two vitamin c tablets a day as essentially 1 of them would be secreted out. It’s still best to get it from diet wherever possible.

Transatlantic Slavery did NOT start in 1619!!! It started at LEAST as early as 1527. In 1527 the Narvaez expedition from Spain left for the Gulf of Mexico. A hurricane (or bad storm) later all but 3 sailors and a slave were either killed or separated. One of the sailors survived, made it back to Spanish settlements, and wrote a letter to the King detailing this (including the adventures of the enslaved man Esteban). There's also speculation that Columbus had African slaves with him in 1492 but placing it in the 1600s misses a LOT of important historical events that impacted the trajectory of the world.

The precursors to pencils had a core made of a lead-tin alloy. The drawing paper had to be prepared with a ground coat so it would be rough enough for the metal particles to be deposited onto it.

Actually it really just depends on the wound and how u got it. A simple wound on knee of kids is unlikely to get infected. If u just put some antibacterial/clean it and left it open as opposed to getting a cut from dirty rusty nail. But it really comes down to immunity and age. I have never had infected wounds coz I grew up tougher and didn't had a home repeatedly cleaned by disinfectant within a inch of their life and I usually clean it with antibacterial clean haldi

Actually, duck quacks do echo but because of the audio nature of the quack, various frequencies, pitches etc the echo comes back very quiet and at a low frequency

Nope, doesn't do that, either. Actually it can make it harder for the sauce to adhere to the pasta. For the absolute best pasta dish, salt your water, finish cooking the pasta in the sauce, and add a few tablespoons of the pasta water to the sauce for a rich, delicious sauce that coats every bit of pasta thoroughly in saucy goodness!

Exactly! Sometimes, the water coming with the pasta is enough, sometimes some is to add. Oil in boiling water is kind of an insult, and the arrogantly made claims how "italian" it would be to waste a "good oil" (in these cases, usually a hardly edible cheap olive oil that tastes bitter, bitter, bitter and also bitter - c**p...) on this purpose can really be annoying. There is nothing to it - never was - never will be - and don't dare telling an actual Italian that you fell for this bs...

I thought the trick was adding oil AFTER draining the water? I'm not sure what oil should do when it's added to the water. The boiling over surely is caused by the starch making the water slightly viscose and thereby trapping gas bubbles inside the liquid - nothing that the addition of oil would prevent.

Wait, what?! B******t. Pain is only beneficial for an organism if it's able to change the situation in the moment (e.g. by moving away from a fire) or prevent the situation in the future (by staying far away from something that looks like fire). Presumably it's present in all animals. There's a genetic disorder that results in a lack of feeling pain ("Congenital insensitivity to pain"), and it's highly detrimental. People with that disorder have extremely poor health because they notice bodily damage too late or not at all. Pain is nature's way of saying "don't do this" and "favor this damaged body part til its sufficiently healed", neither of which would be useful to a plant. I'd assume pain to be felt by all mobile animals, be reduced in sessile animals, and be completely absent in kingdoms consisting of only sessile organisms (plants and mushrooms).

that WW1 wasn't called WW1 before WW2 there are many "what is wrong with this sentence?" riddles about a sentence before WW2 calling WW1 WW1, which is supposed to be wrong since at that time it was widely called "the great war" and not WW1. however THERE WERE a few articles from that time that called the war WW1, as a prediction that this is just the start and other wars like this are on their way. it wasn't very common but there are evidences for it.

Honestly the OP doesn't make sense. The original statement just means that it wasn't called WW1 COMMONLY like today - and it wasn't. Of course when you make a pessimistic prediction about there being more in the future, you would call it the first! But unlike today, no one talking about "the Great War" needed to specify which one, so they didn't.

The whole "Got Milk?" and "Milk does a body good." marketing came about in the early 1980s, after dairy farmers experienced a glut of product and plummeting prices, just as people were becoming aware of the dangers of a high-fat diet. -- It was a marketing ploy to get people to drink more milk. And it worked. --- Same reason our pizzas crusts started being filled with cheese. The dairy industry had to use the excess milk somehow, and the dairy lobbyists got the U.S. public to buy in to the b******t.

It’s much easier to have a balanced diet and get everything we need to be healthy by eating some meat, fish included. There are 21 essential amino acids and our bodies only produce 3 I think naturally? There are supplements but studies show they don’t work as well as getting them naturally. And you can eat nuts etc. to get protein but you have to eat massive quantities to get the same level as you would from a small piece of meat. Instead of animals vs vegan or vegetarian we should focus on ethical and sustainable food.

AFAIK you can reduce the amount of animal product pretty far and still be fine. But you still need them to be truly healthy LONG TERM, i.e. over decades. People like to refer to ancient practices to prove it's not detrimental, but they usually omit that historically, food hygiene was quite poor and therefore most meals included a fair amount of insects and microorganisms.

okay but some people do better with animal protein than vegetable protein, and many parts of the world are really not conducive to growing everything needed for a vegetarian diet. i don't eat a ton of meat, but i get a much more definite and sustained energy boost from meat and cheese than i do from vegetable proteins. a ham and cheese sandwich keeps me full longer than a bowl of oatmeal, that's just the truth, for me. additionally, being poor isn't conducive to any specific diet, whether it's keto or vegan or macro or atkins. in my house, we eat what tastes good and is affordable and not super awful for our health.
