Try typing “best life hacks” in Google’s search bar. You’ll find a laundry list of results about must-tries. What isn’t often highlighted are the ones that you may need to think twice before following. Some may even do more harm than good.

Thankfully, we have the people of Reddit to bring these to light by answering the question, “What are some commonly recommended life hacks which are actually wrong or bad?”

You’ll find some of the usual tips about sleeping less to achieve more, going on detox diets, and drinking coffee to sober up. Now that you think about it, these supposedly clever methods may be questionable at best and potentially harmful at worst.

Scroll through this list and see if you’ve tried any of these hacks. Were they as helpful as advertised? Or were they all hype?

30 People Debunk The Worst Life Hacks They’ve Heard When people suggest going for a walk or working out to combat depression because “you don’t NEED medication, you just need to clear your head. Depression and anxiety are all in your head.”

Literally every single person uses anti-depressants. It's just that most people produce said anti-depressants themselves in their brain or body. If you can't make a certain substance, store-bought is fine.

I love it! It's acceptable for a diabetic person to take insulin because their body doesn't produce it correctly. It should also be acceptable for me to take medication because my brain doesn't produce/process serotonin correctly.

As a depressive, walking (lots) is a *part* of my CBT routine. It helps me realign my thoughts in a more positive way because I’m away from the issues that influence my negative thinking. Slow, repetitive, simple exercise can be helpful, if not the entire solution. I found anti-depressants affected me badly, so I need other coping tools like therapy.

Having a wide range of eye movement watching trees and buildings is prooven to help too. It's not necessarily only one puzzle piece that helps but rather a whole set.

I agree and disagree with this, yes there is a chemical imbalance in most depressed peoples brains, so medication is always the solution there. However as someone who suffers with depression, they're not the only tool to recovery. Walking/working out everyday has greatly improved my life.

My experience is the meds help for the first bit to get feeling little better which then helps get the energy to start doing the lifestyle stuff that contributes to good mood regulation. Can't really walk yourself out major depression. But it is a tool to help

Usually, a combination of the two is recommended, especially at the start of treatment. Medication to stabilise you, then therapy (walking, talking, embroidery whatever) and see whether medication can be reduced. Sometimes it can, there are also people who simply need to use medication in order to function at an acceptable level in life. It so depends on the person.

I kinda understand why they recommend going out for a walk because it can help. However diminishing the whole depression as something fully treatable by physical activity s ridiculous.

I exercised a lot and spent hours walking in nature when I was most depressed. It didn’t make the slightest difference. I was just depressed on a treadmill or depressed amongst trees. Medication, on the other hand, turned my life around. So yeah… maybe it works for some people but don’t pronounce it like a cure all because it definitely isn’t.

Marlowe Fitzpatrik

Nobody with their information straight would pronounce it as a cure-all! But let's face it, unless someone has serious allergies, being outside won't hurt, exercise is good for health (mental and physical, and walking is exercise) and changing scenarios is good for your mental agility. All proven facts. Severely depressed people will often not benefit from the good effects, though, and need medication to be able to do so. So no, absolutely not a cure-all but it is good for people anyway.

Reading these comments, I think it's important to note that this is talking about the people who say that exercise is a REPLACEMENT for psych meds. Yes, going for walks and getting exercise is extremely beneficial for everyone, especially people with depression. But there are those who think that medications are unnecessary and lifestyle changes alone will "cure" psychiatric disorders. That's what this post is addressing. Some people need medication in addition to other therapies, and for those people, no amount of walks in nature aline are going be sufficient.

Marlowe Fitzpatrik

But the original post doesn't say "replace" but says "to combat depression". I for one find it too vague if it really wants to say "replace" instead, because no matter what your mental health and unless there's something outside that makes you physically ill (pollen or whatnot), being outdoors and in nature WILL be good for you. It might not cure depression, certainly, but it will hardly make it worse and it will be good for your heart and blood-pressure

Feel you. If I'd gotten a Dollar every time someone told me to ExERciZe during my deepest depression, I'd now live in a mansion. Reality was: I left my bed, did 5 dishes (I counted!) and then had to lay down for at least a half hour. I just left the house for a quick grocery shop. I physically just couldn't do more. Some really heavy meds while in the psych ward finally numbed the pain enough that I could start to function normally again. And yeah, all the time i was doing therapy, but my brain was just so f'd up. It needed a chemical reset. Most horrible 3-4 years of my life

activity can be great for a MOOD. If you're in a bad/unhappy mood, yes, activity can help. A small thing like mood can be affected by a small thing like exercise. Depression is not a mood. You cannot jog your way out of depression. There are no jumping jacks for ennui. You cannot use mind-over-matter on an illness.

As a person who suffers severe chronic anxiety and depression, get help. Get therapy. Get medicine. There's no reason not to. Going for a walk and working out though is never a bad suggestion. Exercise, fresh air, sunshine, a balanced diet, thinking happy thoughts: that's good and healthy for everybody. It won't cure my anxiety or depression. Does it help? Yeah. I guess. Whether or not it helps my anxiety and depression, it's good for me.

Exercise is a great addition to medication. There's no need to choose. Do both. Things that also help are putting on some music, dancing, and singing at the top of your lungs. Yes, these can be very difficult to do when depressed, but if you can do them it really does help.

People fail to realize that things originated in the mind legitimately affect the body. Similar to an asthma attack provoked by anxiety, it *is* a real asthma attack and you can die from it. Let me just quote Dumbledore in this one. "Of course it is in your head, but why on earth would not be real?"

Kate Jones

Depression is a mood disorder of the brain. Which is why it's frustrating for people who have it to try and prove they do. It's not feeling sad occasionally or even for a short period of time. A lot of people say they have depression but unless you've been diagnosed, self-diagnosing is usually wrong. If exercise causes your depression to go away, you weren't depressed in the first place. It's persistent, invisible and can cause major issues in your life no matter what you look like or how healthy physically you are. Beauty queens, rich people, people who go to the gym every day, people who have families...they have all had depression to the point of suicide or of hating their lives. Going for a walk isn't going to cut it. However, going for a walk can help keep you physically healthy so you don't ALSO have issues with that, which can make your depression symptoms worse.

But like, it’s best to try and fix it without medication first. Meds can cause side effects, and can sometimes mess with your brain chemistry. And you don’t want to develop a reliance. There’s nothing wrong with taking meds, but like you gotta be careful what you put in your body sometimes, y’know?

As a programmer, I have a general formula for when people asked me to work on multiple projects at the same time. If I estimate task A is 1 week, and task B is 1 week one done after the other, and I'm required to do them at the same time the estimate is 4 weeks. And it goes up doubling from there for any more projects. Giving the people involved both estimates usually solves the problem, but in rare cases with two managers (yes that was a thing for a time) both would want their projects worked on and wouldn't "wait". So, they both got their projects later than it should have taken.

Then people who call will be able to determine where you are after listening to the voicemail.

Things that are very wrong with this advice:
* Many people can go days without getting a phone call.
* It you don’t answer the phone, most people probably won’t listen to the voicemail greeting.

What you should do, if possible, is send one of your contacts your approximate location. GPS coordinates work. And always call 911.

30 People Debunk The Worst Life Hacks They’ve Heard The advice I see on Reddit about asking for an itemized receipt is incomplete.

Asking for an itemized receipt does not automatically drop the total cost. Instead, asking for an itemized receipt allows you to identify line items that don't make sense, don't apply to you, or weren't rendered.

For instance, I was charged a materials delivery fee as part of a home renovation project, even though I transported all the materials to my home myself. Since the service was not rendered, I got that cost stricken from my total, but I had to first identify it manually and draw attention to it--it didn't just automatically go away when I asked for the itemized receipt.

Rice -being very dry- is a good medium to extract some moisture. Salt would be even better, but it damages stuff. Dryers usually come with heat, and sometimes it damages the plastics. All these work for wet electronics provided you don't turn them on before and there are not other associated damages. I usually suggest using silica cat litter, that is readily available in quantities, cheap and is the same stuff you find in the silica gel packets.

Maybe Some people are lucky enough to be attractive and other people will pursue them. But the rest of us? We have to put ourselves out there, its never going to just drop in our laps. Had a friend who took the 'it'll come when I'm not looking' approach. For TEN YEARS. When he finally took my advice and made the effort? He found the woman he married, and they are expecting a second kid.

30 People Debunk The Worst Life Hacks They’ve Heard Mix vinegar and bicarb in a spray bottle for the most effective cleaner - enjoy cleaning with salt water. The effective part is the reaction of mixing the two, not the resultant solution.

We live in a hard water area and it's great for cleaning the toilet below the water line(removing the water first). And I often put bicarb in the washing machine. It's not the end all and be all but both have some very good uses together and separately.

30 People Debunk The Worst Life Hacks They’ve Heard The idea that drinking cold water burns calories comes from the fact that your body uses energy to heat the water to body temperature, but the amount is minimal (around 8 calories per glass).

30 People Debunk The Worst Life Hacks They’ve Heard It's ok to wipe your eye glasses with your shirt, TP or paper towels. No that s**t can still scratch the lenses and you should use the cloth that came with your glasses instead.

I have glass lenses, not plastic. As long as I don't wear shirts made of diamonds I can wipe my glasses with my shirt.

It very much works, but depends on the paste. Some pastes have fine abrasives and do the trick. You also need a clean fine-mesh cloth, and some application skill. Overall though you'd be better off using commercial polishing product, that have a better abrasive mix and binding media designed to help lubricating and cooling the surface while doing the polishing.

They can be bad in what people often do with them, even if the theory is good.

For example, big batch meal prep *can be* bad for your health by reducing the variety of foods people consume and by slightly increasing food hygiene risk as meals are prepared, cooled, stored and reheated.

Done well though, for many people, it can actually increase the quality and variety of what they eat. It’s all in the execution not the theory.

You're doing it wrong. I don't use this 'hack' myself, but the only way your bins are getting 'nasty' is if you've not fitted the bin bag correctly or you've managed to rip it.

That whole : ask your doctor to put it in your chart and then they'll do whatever you want.

I'm a doctor. Just no. All the chart is for is a record of what we did to be billing insurance for in the appointment. If your request doesn't line up with your symptoms, we are well within our rights to deny it. And considering the chart isn't for negative diagnostic loops, we don't have to put that our patient asked for some unrelated medicine, test, or thing.

That won't get you any resolution unless your doctor was already a people-pleaser to begin with.

But it will leave a record, so when you say, i have been having these issues for a year, there's a record. It takes an average of five years to get a PCOS diagnosis because doctors dismiss symptoms. If they are on the chart, this can speed up the process to about two years.

You mean just using water droplets to test if your pan is hot enough yet? Well sure, it's easy to get your pan too hot and burn stuff, but equally so if you use this test or no test at all.

People talk about the advice of cleaning as you cook, and while it’s not a bad idea, I think it has some drawbacks:

There are hot surfaces, and washing pans with water immediately when they’re hot is bad. After eating, you still have to wash the plates, glasses, and utensils... I don’t see many advantages compared to cleaning after eating, or if you have a dishwasher, it’s much more convenient and uses less water.

It’s fine, cleaning while cooking has its advantages, but people talk about it as if it’s a game changer and almost as if it’s foolish to do it any other way, when there are several reasons not to. To each their own.

I have a bowl of hot soapy water ready to use when I’m cooking. I clean everything but the cooker as I go (or put things in the dishwasher). We have 90% of our home meals at our kitchen table, and I don’t want to see mess whilst I’m eating.
