While football (soccer) news isn’t the most featured subject here at Bored Panda, the sports world stars sometimes find themselves in scenarios that are worthy of a story. This time, it was a dramatic moment between two WAGs (an acronym for wives and girlfriends of high-profile sportspersons) that drew the internet’s attention and the details of how it all came to be that caught our interest.

Coleen Rooney is an English author and television personality who’s released such books as Welcome to My World (2007), Coleen’s Real Style (2008) and a four-book series Coleen Style Queen (2008-2010). Though for all the soccer aficionados, she might be best known as the wife of Wayne Rooney, the English star player who’s currently signed with the American MLS club D.C. United.

On October 9, 2019, Coleen shared a message on her social media accounts, detailing some of her personal struggles that she kept from the public’s eye. Apparently, someone close to Coleen, who had access to her personal Instagram account had been leaking details about her life to the tabloid newspaper, The Sun. Obviously, the woman was dissatisfied with such intrusion to her privacy as well as a break of trust that she shared her concerns about it back in January of this year.

The woman revealed how someone close to her has been leaking details of her personal life to the tabloid press

Well, months later, Rooney finally found the culprit and her investigative ways of achieving that are quite impressive! Apparently, Coleen had a suspicion of who might be selling her private stories to the press, so she went on and blocked everyone from accessing her Instagram stories, except for the person she suspected. For months, Rooney was watching over her account, planting numerous fake stories to see if they would surface on the tabloid newspapers. One of the stories included her saying that the family’s £20 million mansion is flooding. The star player’s wife laid out a trap and it paid off very quickly. Only one person’s account watches her fake stories. Those stories would then appear on the news.

After months of investigation, Rooney finally found the alleged culprit

In an emotional Twitter post detailing the ordeal, Rooney called out Rebekah Vardy as the culprit behind the leaks. Rebekah is the wife of another star football player, Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy.

And shared a message on her social media accounts about how she did it

    Her message read:
“For a few years now, someone who I trusted to follow me on my personal Instagram account has been consistently informing The SUN newspaper of my private posts and stories.
There has been so much information given to them about me, my friends and my family – all without my permission or knowledge.
After a long time of trying to figure out who it could be, for various reasons, I had a suspicion.
To try and prove this, I came up with an idea. I blocked everyone from viewing my Instagram stories except ONE account. (Those on my private account must have been wondering why I haven’t had stories on there for a while.)
Over the past five months, I have posted a series of false stories to see if they made their way into the Sun newspaper. And you know what, they did! The story about gender selection in Mexico, the story about returning to TV and then the latest story about the basement flooding in my new house.
It’s been tough keeping it to myself and not making any comment at all, especially when the stories have been leaked, however, I had to. Now I know for certain which account/individual its come from.
I have saved and screenshotted all the original stories which clearly show just one person has viewed them.
    It’s ………. Rebekah Vardy’s account.”

The fellow WAG responded to Coleen’s accusations on social media by issuing a statement where she denied all wrongdoing. Apparently, Rebekah was so adamant to prove her innocence that she allegedly hired a forensic investigation team to prove that other people had access to her Instagram account, therefore proving that someone else who accessed her account is to blame.

The accused is the wife of Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy, Rebekah Vardy

She denied all the accusations and posted the following message on her Instagram account

While peeps on Twitter quickly responded to the apparent beef between the women, someone quickly pointed out the unsung hero of the story. Back in January, when Coleen first expressed concerns over privacy breaches, Twitter user “dbuzz89” suggested making false stories and seeing who would sell them to the press. This was one of the tactics Rooney ended up using to catch the person leaking her personal life to the tabloids. “dbuzz89” even changed his Twitter bio to say “detective who recently solved the coleen rooney vs rebekah vardy case”.

Read the story. Her instagram was private, only for friends. Not the public. That’s what private means. I hate social media too but not everyone is like us. Some people have tons of friends they want to connect with.

Eliezer Yudkowsky is correct. This is not proof. However, I must say I was on board with the accused's plea of innocence until the end where she gets kind of emotionally abusive. "[How could you do this] when I'm heavily pregnant" and "I'm disgusted that I'm even having to deny this" don't sound like things an innocent person would say. Still... not proof.

People don't react the same way. Inoccents may act enraged and guilty ones act cal, and viceversa. And reading some of the comments, yeha, either account may be compromised.

Eliezer Rudkowsky is right. Coleen Rooney didn’t proof Rebekah Vardy is the culprit. Even though Rebekah Vardy could be the one, the evidence available doesn’t exclude others. If Rooney’s account was hacked an outsider could be the one leaking her stories.
