The Close-Up Photography Awards that celebrates and showcases close-up, macro, and microphotography, has just announced its winners and finalists. The overall Close-up Photographer of the Year award was won by a French photographer Galice Hoarau for his image of an eel larva, captured off the island of Lembeh, Indonesia. Other stunning winners include spiders, geckos, flowers, and other magnificent shots.

The competition comprised of seven categories—Animals, Insects, Plants and Fungi, Intimate Landscape, Manmade World, Young (for creatives under 17), and Micro (for photographs taken with a microscope).

The 100 winners were chosen from more than 6,000 entries that came from 52 countries from around the globe. Scroll down below to see the selection of the best shots and tell us what you think of them in the comment section!

It is definitely a type of squid. Do you see the flaps of skin off the body, the way they are triangular? That's a characteristic of squid, cuttlefish have a fringe of skin that goes around the whole body.

This is definitely of the cephalopoda family. But since it is "close-up" photography, and of smallish subjects, I am guessing this must be a baby squid or some such!

As pretty as this is, I wish it hadn't been staged. I'm not even sure that it wasn't photoshopped, because the petals on the purple flowers are in the exact same positions all around.

Hello! I am the photographer for this photo. It ABSOLUTELY was not photoshopped! I have developed a painstaking in-camera technique of photographing my subjects using a rotating platform. The tulips were photographed at 8 equidistant positions in order to complete the full rotation. An in-camera multiple exposure of 8 exposures was used to create the mandala. My goal with my work is to show the natural world in a unique way. That is why I "stage" the photo. Elizabeth Kazda

Follow the photoprapher's name which is a link: "‘Close to where I live there is an old abandoned mill by a pond. Water flows down the mountain into a giant cauldron here, and during winter it creates huge icicles. The problem is how to get there – there are no paths or rocks to step on. Thankfully, I discovered a solution in the form of a portable fire ladder! Walking from the car to the mill took time, and was even harder because I was wearing thick clothes and carrying the ladder. To get into position I tied the ladder to a tree and used it to climb down. Once down there, I noticed that there was no mobile phone reception! As usual, I had no idea what I was going to find, apart from plenty of ice, but I wasn’t disappointed when I spotted this frozen air bubble inside an icicle.’"

This reminds me of the Alcon Blue butterfly AKA "Cuckoo" butterfly that fools ants into caring for their young because their larvae smell like ant larvae! The ant finds it on the ground and thinks its an ant beebee and takes it back to the nest and feeds it and takes care of it until it has become a butterfly, crawls out of its encasement and flies away!
