With so many apocalyptic events happening recently—from Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine to the continuing global Covid-19 pandemic—it can be easy to forget that we have another urgent crisis on our hands. The climate crisis.

Climate change, pollution, and environmental degradation haven’t taken a vacation. They’re still baring their claws and some argue that it might already be too late to avoid many of the worst effects.

And the proof is pretty much everywhere. The weather is becoming more unpredictable with droughts, floods, fires, and heatwaves becoming more and more common. Global temperatures and sea levels are rising. And even birds are laying their eggs earlier in some places as spring is coming earlier in the year.

Bored Panda has compiled this list of photos to remind you of the very real impact that climate change has on people’s everyday lives. When you’re done looking through these horrifying photos, we’d like to hear your thoughts on the most effective ways to stop the climate crisis. You can share them in the comments, dear Pandas.

Bored Panda reached out to Joseph Pierre, a professor of psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the author of the 'Psych Unseen: Brain, Belief, & Behavior' blog at Psychology Today to understand why some people deny that climate change exists. The good news is that there's been a decrease in climate change denial in recent years. However, the biggest challenges remain pushing for political and legislative change, fighting a sense of powerlessness, and overcoming the deceptions that Big Oil operates with. Not to mention that even though some people believe in climate change, they don't think that it's 'anthropogenic', i.e. caused by human beings. Which, very obviously, it is.

"We’ve actually seen a significant decrease in climate change denial across the world over the past decade. One reason is that we’ve all been witnessing global warming and its effects firsthand with the hottest temperatures ever recorded in recent years. Another reason is that climate change scientists, governments, and various advocacy groups have also been a lot more vocal about the consensus on this issue, pushing back against the disinformation campaigns of conservative groups and Big Oil," Dr. Pierre explained to us why fewer people are deniers now.

It was actually republican strategist Frank Luntz who made the term climate change mainstream through a memo to the Bush administration advising them to use climate change instead of the more accurate global warming. He apparently regrets it... https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/frank-luntz-the-man-who-came-up-with-climate-change-and-regrets-it-6v6pp00pc

There were a lot of these doctored ones, or pics taken years apart, during a fog etc etc. just for shock value going around at the beginning of the pandemic. They're usually not real if you look into it

"To me, the biggest challenge isn’t converting those who continue to deny anthropogenic climate change—it’s how to best translate growing acceptance of anthropogenic climate change into political and legislative action. I think that there are a lot of people who now believe that anthropogenic climate change is real, but feel powerless to do anything about it," Dr. Pierre said.

We all have a part to play in saving Planet Earth. However, action on an individual scale is minuscule and needs to be supplemented by multinational corporations radically changing their business models.

"While we can all do some small part as consumers, the reality is that real change has to come from the fossil fuel industry acting against its immediate self-interests in order to steer us away from future disaster," the UCLA professor told Bored Panda. Dr. Pierre believes that companies that contribute to the climate crisis the most are very likely aware of what they're doing but haven't admitted to it yet.

"Like the tobacco industry, there’s good evidence that Big Oil believes that anthropogenic climate change is a reality, but refuses to acknowledge it publicly. That’s not true denial, it’s deception. Which means that change won’t happen unless there’s legislative action on a global scale. If we don’t demand that as citizens and voters, it won’t happen."

Oregon Senate Bill 1536 would help fund air conditioners for low-income residents. Most of the people who died were seniors who couldn't afford A/C. I don't think the bill has passed yet. If you live in the state, lean on your representatives to get it passed.

According to Dr. Pierre from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, there are different types of climate change denialism. Some of them have different causes. The professor was kind enough to walk us through it all.

"To start with, research has also shown that attitudes about climate change are related to 'naïve realism' based on our own personal experience of the weather. We tend to be insensitive to data from around the world or what’s going on with glacial melts in favor of what we experience in our own lives."

He explained: "Personally experiencing record-breaking heatwaves and flooding tends to increase belief in climate change, but cold winters can have the opposite effect."

What's more, we're less aware of small changes that happen over long periods of time. Dr. Pierre noted that the comparison to boiling frogs is actually very accurate. "And since we all experience a diurnal variation of at least 20 degrees F’ on any given day, it’s hard to imagine why climate change scientists are saying that a predicted increase of just a few degrees of mean global temperature could spell mass disaster for the planet."

More and more people believe that climate change is real. Unfortunately, there's a hitch. Not everyone believes in the idea that it is 'anthropogenic,' caused by human beings by burning fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. The UCLA professor says that this idea is less widely accepted. And it's all due to a misconception that there's supposed widespread disagreement between scientists on this matter.

"This is partially due to lack of awareness about just how many climate change scientists agree that anthropogenic climate change is a reality and the associated misperception that there’s disagreement on this subject. Reviews of published literature, as well as polls, have consistently shown that consensus among climate change scientists about anthropogenic climate change is 97% or higher," Dr. Pierre noted.

"Although it’s true that some 'scientists' have gone on record refuting anthropogenic climate change, studies have shown that the more expertise on the subject of climate change, the more consensus. In other words, while some who refute climate change might have a science background, most aren’t actually experts—they aren’t climate change scientists who are actively working and publishing research in the field. Note also that the idea that anthropogenic climate change isn’t settled science is a deliberate disinformation strategy that has been funded by the fossil fuel industry going back decades."

What's more, climate change denial can be attributed to partisan motivated reasoning, according to Dr. Pierre. He stressed to Bored Panda that in the United States, it's political orientation that is one of the strongest predictors of climate change denial. So, for example, conservatives and Republicans tend to be more likely to deny anthropogenic climate change than liberals and Democrats.

"That divide is much wider in the US than it is in many other countries and climate change denial is tellingly more common in countries that are major oil producers like the US and Saudi Arabia," the professor noted.

"Rather than this being explained by conservatives being 'anti-science' per se, it suggests that climate change denial is largely about what has been called 'solution aversion'—an unwillingness to curb fossil fuel production because it will hurt one’s wallet—whether we’re talking about a blue-collar working the coal industry, a politician with significant campaign donations from Big Oil, or Big Oil itself," he suggested that economic interests make up a significant part of this denial.

"On an unconscious level, this can also be explained by cognitive dissonance—when faced with the psychological discomfort that arises by acknowledging that we are the cause of worldwide calamity, motivated denial of anthropogenic climate change can make that discomfort go away."

I’m not certain, but it almost looks like wood worms carved their tunnels under the bark… and then the fire burned the bark away (or charred enough of it that it fell off), exposing the worms’ work.

I live in a river city. Yes, there's a rise and fall in different seasons, but it's not normal for these drastic level differences. You can even see the ground where the water was is pretty much dry and growing grass, as there was a longer period of low waters.

Apathy, cynicism, greed, straight-out denial, and distrust in science are some of the biggest obstacles that prevent Planet Earth from tackling the climate crisis with its full focus and might.

And now, more than ever, is the moment when we have to come together and fight climate change on all possible fronts, at all costs. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that the situation is very bleak: the crisis is accelerating so rapidly, there’s only a narrow window left to avoid the worst of the worst.

According to The Guardian, some of the things that each and every single one of us can do to help the planet include eating a largely plant-based diet with healthy portions and no waste, as well as greatly reducing the amount of new clothing we buy each year.

Something else to focus on is using electrical products for as long as possible without upgrading. Tom Bailey, the founder of The Jump campaign, also urges people to limit their flights, get rid of cars if possible, and insulate their homes better.

My mom used to tell me stories about how Denver International Airport was built in tornado alley. The city wanted a larger airport. There was a large undeveloped area to the northeast of the city which developers thought it was perfect. There was a reason why that land was undeveloped. If you ever visit DIA, you'll notice a surprising number of tornado shelters inside.

In the opposite of this, several years ago, in southern Ontario, it got so cold that we started getting frost quakes. We heard and felt a few of them around, but one was so loud it almost sounded like a truck slamming into the house. The street nearby had cracked open. Naw. That road is nearly 90 years old. It's regularly maintained and did transition decades ago from cobblestone to asphalt. Overall though, it was fine for nearly a century until Portland had its day of 116F (46.6C) temperatures, and the road split. The road was not built to withstand that extreme temperature.

The Insider points out that it’s far too late to avoid many of the weather changes already afflicting our planet, including what’s to come. What we’re talking about now is mitigating the damage and the fallout. There are plenty of things that individuals, companies, and nations can do to help protect the environment and humanity.

For example, one thing that nations can do is upgrade, improve, and adapt their power grids so that they can avoid power outages, as the climate becomes more and more unpredictable. This might mean running power lines underground in areas that are susceptible to fires or elevating them in places that are in danger of getting flooded.

This can also be the moment when nature becomes more closely integrated with dense urban areas. Urban forests could help cool cities down by merging grey infrastructure with everything that’s green and natural.

Lytton has burned down 3 times in the last 100 years. The residents keep building it again, I would take that as some sort of sign. I live in Merritt, which is really close to Lytton, we still have a lot of evacuees here. Merritt experienced flooding in November and these people were forced to evacuate again with the rest of Merritt,, some of them lost everything again for the 2nd time in 4.5 months.

It's been awhile since I've been down there. Okanogan mountain fire, summer 2003. I was camping across the lake. I watched it start, I watched it spread. Even took a boat right across the lake one day close to shore. I had never before experienced something like that and so close. It's sadly become the norm now, seeing skies like this.

What’s more, there’s no doubt that the global food industry will have to continue to adapt. Hardier crops that can survive long periods of drought and torrential rainfall will have to be bred. Meanwhile, livestock will have to be given better living conditions to protect them from the elements. However, millions of people will still face food and water shortages, as they do now.

According to the recent IPCC report, there isn’t an inhabited region on our planet that won’t be affected by rising temperatures and increasingly severe weather. Meanwhile, roughly half of the global population (from 3.3 to 3.6 billion people) currently live in areas that are classified as being “highly vulnerable” to climate change.

I’ve seen large deep puddles, after days of heavy rain or a hurricane/tropical storm, end up not 9th occupied by geese, but inhabited by tadpoles. Like, if the water stays standing long enough, the puddle becomes its own little ecosystem. A temporary ecosystem, but an ecosystem nonetheless.

I lived at the beach for 10 years. My dinner table was next to a sliding glass door with a western exposure. One really cold winter day the sky was so clear it was like the sun had no filter. Even though it didn’t make it noticeably warmer outside, if you put your hand up to a window, it was warm. I had candlesticks with taper-style candles in them on my dinner table. When I got home from work, the sun coming through the slider had been so intense for so many hours that it had complete melted both of my candles. PS- This was back in the early 90s.

The report also warns that we’re already seeing massive die-offs of species, from trees to corals. As the global temperature continues to rise, some ecosystems are also turning from life-saving carbon sinks into carbon sources because they’re losing their ability to absorb carbon dioxide.

Just so everyone knows, this happened not because the siding is made of vinyl, but because that vinyl siding has been painted over. You CAN paint vinyl siding, but it is important to paint it a lighter color than it was originally as darker colors absorb more heat from sunlight and cause the product to expand more than its installation will allow for.

This is either defective siding or the owner did something. It should easily survive 108. It’s s**t like this that makes getting people to accept climate change difficult because morons post this stuff which is lies/fake/half truths saying it’s proof of climate change which is easily disproven which makes people think actually data is the same. At this rate, entire families might have to consider the hard truth that they might want to consider relocating to less risky areas, with better access to resources, fewer dangerous weather events, and away from the rising sea levels. However, in the meantime, each and every single one of us has a responsibility on our part to help mitigate the disaster that is the climate crisis. There’s no plan B, nor is there a planet B. It’s a matter of integrity, morals, and survival.

It was like this in Jacksonville Fla 23 years ago when I was pregnant with my second child . It was also "snowing" ash . It looked so apocalyptic, and smelled so bad. I couldn't believe that they were so far away . I can't imagine how hellish it would be if it had been closer. It really puts into perspective the scale of destruction these fires cause. For us to be hundreds of miles away and we could feel the heat from it and were choking on the smoke and ash from it .

I’m in Maryland, and have seen many years where we’d get several inches of snow that would all completely melt away the next day when the temperature was like 70 degrees Fahrenheit—-like it never even happened. This winter (2021-2022), I’ve seen weeks where it would be freezing cold for a few days, followed by a few days that were so warm we’d have to turn off the heat, open the windows, and get the fans out because it was so hot inside.

Nearly 1,000 drought and flood disasters have been reported in the last 2,000 years. On the one hand, the various river bed shifts in the lower reaches of the Yellow River had an impact on the province's agriculture, on the other hand, the heavy rainfall in summer quickly led to an increase in the water flow in the rivers, which can then overflow their banks.

fun little story here. so on our way to myrtle beach, SC, somewhere in i think NC there was this place called "trumpville." it was this little parking lot full of trump flags you could buy. on the sign that stated the area's name, i think it said "republicans only." or at least thaats what my dad said while reading the sign. now, my dad is no republican. what he did as he drove past was, (wait for it) he rolled down the window, stuck out his arm, and.... shot them the bird.

I think they mean the size of the hailstones, rather than the size of the storm. We normally only get hail a few mm in diameter, but pea-sized is getting more common, and we have started seeing golf ball-sized, which leads to do damaged cars and roofs.

The Horsham, West Sussex one always comes to my mind (remember reading about it, don't know it personally!)! The heaviest hailstone recorded in Britain fell from the H7 storm which tracked 150 km from West Wittering (West Sussex) to Maldon (Essex) on 5 September 1958 - the stone, which fell on Horsham (Sussex), weighed 190g. Might have been beaten now of course...

I wonder if this is from storm Franklin a few weeks back as we had hail like this and it hit the soft facia tiles on my house so hard that it punched some of them in and the hail filled the cavities. Once inside they melted and the water ran along my sceiling cavity and dripped off the light socket directly over my computer desk chair. I was sitting in the chair at the time and even though the light was off at the time there was still a live wire up there and you could hear it crackling. Fun times. :D

It looks like a hail storm which are pretty common in winter every year in the UK. I have seen far worse. We've had tornadoes, waterspouts, thundersnow, gales, floods and wildfires. We've even had the occasional earthquake. People have died. But this? This will have melted away to nothing in less than ten minutes. This is not climate change. This is English weather. Always has been.

Edmonton has very cold winters, but I have never seen one cracked so far. However, Edmonton's climate is changing pretty rapidly. I have been here 10 years, and in that short time, the summers have become warmer and the winters have become... unpredictable. Warm, cold, ice storms, thunder storms, rain, hail. Last Winter it all happened.

You know, I wasn't sure about climate change when there were aggressive protests about it because I couldn't relate to those protesting. So I guess I missed the message. But when roads and bins like this one start melting and the global floods, droughts and wildfires are more prevalent, I'm really getting the message that we need to change. If we don't do it quickly enough some of us in the future will be talking round campfires or in our caves about how it was all avoidable. But no-one listened.

Can confirm! Summers are incredible there! I lived in a west facing, top floor of a walk up, I loved summer before that apartment. Rarely ate unless it came directly from the freezer, tvs, laptops, computer, it was never allowed to be on. And no! We had no air conditioning, my lease forbid it. I loved it when the days started getting shorter, it meant the sun went down and you might actually get to cool off a bit.

This is what we call a “splash park.” (I’m in Kansas.) We have one that looks identical here in my town and it is fed water from underground and comes out in sprinklers and cannons and shower-like contraptions. It has drains which collect the water and recycle it back out again. It is chlorinated, like a pool. The bucket is fed water and once it is full, it dumps over onto the people playing. It isn’t rainwater. I understand that water doesn’t freeze very often in Texas, but it does still get cold enough for people to not frequent water attractions!

I’d say I agree with the commenters about water expanding a when it freezes, but I’ve never seen water in a toilet at a level sufficient enough to expand over the toilet’s edge. (In fact, look at the other frozen toilet post… the water is only ever about halfway up a toilet bowl.) My guess is it was constantly running (like when the float breaks)… and this caused the water level to keep rising as it froze, until it dripped over the sides and created the icicles.

Tempered glass contains considerable internal stress. This enables it to be very strong, up until the point where its limits are exceeded. I think what may have happened here is the black glass table was at least partially shaded. The part in the sun heated up and expanded while the shaded part did not until the stress between the two areas became too much and the table shattered. If it had not been tempered glass it may simply have cracked into two large pieces along the line of stress.

Anyone know roughly the temperature at which the metal most likely used in this type of lock would expand by such a degree? Just cz it’s unheard of doesn’t mean it’s not scary af

    M O'Connell
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Assuming "The Club" is made of mild steel, it's coefficient of thermal expansion is 11 (ppm). The handle on the twin-hook club is around 15" long, so a temperature swing of 100 degrees would result in the handle 'growing' by ).018" To break the window, the lock probably needed to be tight against the glass to begin with.

The Earth's climate is in a constant state of flux over geologic time. It has always been changing, and always will. The problem lately is the tremendously accelerated changes in the climate due to massive releases of CO2 gas (and other chemicals too) into the atmosphere as a direct result of human activities (so-called anthropogenic climate change). For reference, the carbon contained in fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas was sequestered out of the atmosphere between 360 and 300 million years ago during the Carboniferous period of Earth's geologic history.

how is this even possible? Inside a house? We have here in Slovakia -20, -30 Celsius in winter, never froze the tap with flowing water. Is this picture from non heated garage or what?

These homes are in places where 0 celsius is almost unheard of even for a few hours and they got hit with -20 celsius for a few days. There is no insulation and quite possibly no heater. Even if there was a heater the infrastructure for electricity was way too degraded to supply it and the power went down.

Yup. Last year was the hottest summer on record where I live in Northwest BC. It got 32. I know in the grand scheme of things that isn't that hot to many places, but up here we NEVER see that. There isn't a single house here with AC, it's never been needed. My experience of over ten years of living in Edmonton previously allowed me to get through it with ease but many people suffered.
