Michael Kutsche is an exceptionally well-known and award-winning artist from Berlin, Germany that currently works in both traditional and digital media. Kutsche mainly focuses on character design and concept art, and his large variety of works can be found on his official website. His current portfolio includes character designs from famous movie adaptations such as The Lion King, Alice in Wonderland, Oz the Great and Powerful, The Jungle Book, and even Thor. Of course, that’s not even all of it, as those are just the most recent projects he worked on, but what we can say for sure is that the artist is booked almost full-time for other projects as well.

The artist shared on his official website that he has successfully been working with film industry giants such as Disney Studios, Dreamworks, Marvel Studios, Warner Bros, etc. And, not only that, but his work has also been widely featured in other various forms of media throughout the world.

Mesmerized by the artist’s work Bored Panda reached out to him.

“I always start to approach an artwork from an emotional angle. But it's important to inject a whole mixture of different and even conflicting emotions into the process, it should never be one-dimensional. I think an artwork can have a unique quality when it is able to communicate an emotional depth and richness, I think that's more important than 'style.'”

Since Michael is a self-taught artist, according to the artist’s bio, his work is best described as “an astoundingly lifelike depiction of parallel realities, populated by odd characters reminiscent of movies, comics, but also Flemish Renaissance painting.” Though he works in traditional media like oil and watercolor for his personal and gallery art, his professional work is primarily digital paintings, and it was from a portfolio on Deviantart, a community site devoted to digital art, that he first gained the notice of Sony Pictures Imageworks, a connection that as the artist mentioned himself led to his work on Alice in Wonderland.

Kutsche often works with his digital tools in a way that gives a feeling of painterly traditional brushwork and it looks eerily realistic. Nowadays the german artist shares his work on Instagram, where he has accumulated over 44.4k followers since 2015 when he first started posting on cross-platforms. His website has a gallery of work that dates from 2008 and into 2020, and he also runs a blog where he occasionally posts about his art, exhibitions, etc.

This is beyond terrifying and reminds me of the nightmare inducing Pale Man from Guillermo del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth."

Yeah, mythologically accurate Sleipnir. Very glad that the Marvel movies made the executive decision to leave Sleipnir's origin story out...yeah, that would have been fascinating.
