Christmas is, definitely, a hectic time. Especially for those who forget or postpone buying gifts until the very last second. Then they ought to rush to the closest store and try to whip up a good gift as fast as possible. That, unfortunately, can lead to quite a big mess. It’s all right if the person cleans up after themselves, however that is an extremely rare case.

Cassie Wade from Nashville, Tennessee posted an eye-opening series of pictures that showed how awful some stores look during the holiday season. The photographs showcased the results of many people rummaging through the items, although at first look you might think that a tornado struck the stores in question.

One woman recently came across a total mess caused by Christmas shoppers

And she immediately took to Facebook to show it to the world

In her Facebook message, the woman also focused on how terrible this time is for the retail workers. Not only do they need to clean up all the messes made by customers, they also have to endure people being rude, as Wade witnessed. She used her social media platform to not only call out people for their questionable actions, but to also urge people to treat the retail workers with human decency.

People who responded to Wade’s post were horrified by the images showcasing the mess, and shared their sentiments on being kind to retail workers. One person even suggested buying them various gift cards, like Starbucks, as a way to offer something back during one of the most difficult times of the retail year.

It’s no secret that the holiday season is extremely stressful for retail workers, who not only have a risk of missing out on Christmas dinner with their family, but also have to deal with an insane amount of stress during holidays. Not only is there an influx of people who can cause all sorts of damage, but the need to get the best gift and the best deal can truly bring out the worst in people.

Here’s how people responded to the images

I worked stacking shelves one time in December. Suddenly the shop's doors opened and there was one hell of a racket. I nearly got run over by some idiot pushing a shopping cart, and then I was shoved aside by a mob of apes rushing to get past. I didn't know the shift I'd pulled was midnight on Black Friday. People become frenzied over buying c**p they don't really need while casting aside basic human decency. I fear for the future of the planet if these people are their kids' role models.

I worked a black Friday as extra help and I was only like 2wks into the job (stocker at Walmart) and I knew it wouldn't be a easy or anything but that year a particular video game had come out and I'm only 5'3" and there were guys lined up like a long line and they were not small. Not judging them because of that but stating it because as soon as the store declared they could get there's instead of staying in a line and letting me hand them 1 at a time as the sign at the beginning said they rushed me. I was knocked down not 1 or 2 times but 4.i finally had to radio a manager because I had no prior training for this and 2 had to come and separate me out from these people!

The service industry has normalised the abuse of its staff with "the customer is always right" saying. Providing a good service to customers does not mean that there shouldn't be a minimum standard of behaviour (i.e. common decency) by the customer.

I live in the UK and I have seen a similar sort of thing happen once in my entire life but not as bad as this! The mom dragged her 2 snot hurlers into the aisle and made them clean it all back up. They were probably 5 or 6 years old. The staff didn't klnow about it until the mom apologised at the till for the mess and said they may want to check the aisle to make sure nothing was broken, missing or in the wrong place. She left her address in case of damages. She told kids got told off quietly but she took the time to explain to them why. Mum of the year! This sort of thing is rare in the UK. I believe there is nothing so soul destroying than the British tut of disapproval

I've worked in hospitality for 19 years, and it never ceases to amaze me how blatantly s****y some people can be. It should be mandatory that all Americans work in customer service for at least one year in their lifetime...they'd learn a lot.

Not an American thing in my opinion, just a jerk thing. :) There are those of us in america who know how to respect those in customer service- mostly, those of us, who are working in customer service. XD But yes, some people are just jerks, where they come from doesn't really matter.

People that make these messes don't realize that a human being eventually has to clean it up and that clean up usually happens after the store closes. Disgusting, these shoppers should be ashamed of themselves.

uhh yes people do actually know that the messes that they leave behind are cleaned up by actual people. I have actually seen people make messes like that and heard people laugh while leaving an isle and telling whoever their with or on the phone with “I wonder how long they will spend cleaning everything up”

I worked retail from 9 til about age 30. I will not ever do it again. Holiday shoppers always say "sucks having to work black Friday/Xmas Eve" well if ya didn't need to shop we would be home with family. As for the yelling at cashiers and floor people...those pics say it all. If we had it then it was on the floor. Now it's sold/broken/stolen/or somewhere in that mess. And we always had to stay an clean EVERYTHING back up for the next day. Even if we closed at 1 am. We would stay til cleaned. And we were always told if we didn't work those holiday hours we would be fired. Many jobs I worked would wait til the day after Xmas and I would go back in an be given a pink slip. Temp help. Not that I didn't start in May well before holidays. That was at least three jobs that did that to me. Just be nicer to people. We would stand all day. Be yelled at. Not allowed to even go pee or have a break. We didn't and don't make much money to take the abuse.

I am so sorry. You are made of stronger stuff than I. I worked one retail job as seasonal help and I'll never do it again. It is a grueling, thankless job. Even when there are federal laws in place to protect workers from some of those conditions, you'll always find employers who will push the envelope and get away with whatever they can. My job as a housekeeper was nowhere near cushy, and I tolerated a lot of abuse, but it was made easier because I was behind the scenes and didn't often have to deal with the public. People are mean.

I worked retail for about 7 years in the ‘80’s before they had these ridiculous extended hours b******t. It was an upscale jewelry store and we were barraged with rude customers back then. Since I endured working retail, I refrain from shopping on Black Friday. Also, when I do shop I am always courteous and compassionate towards retail staff. Once you work in retail, your objectivity towards human kindness goes out the window never to be sent again!

During the holidays, people in the service industry should be able to treat others how they are treated. I would straight up lose my job over people being such entitled a**hats. I will not tolerate disrespect done to me just as those doing the disrespecting would not want it done to them. Give them a taste of their own medicine.

I always told my staff that if someone on the phone swears at you say 'please don't swear at me, if you swear one more time I will hang up' and then to actually follow through with it if necessary. No-one should be forced to endure such a horrible attitude. If people want some form of help they can at least be civil. When people make complaints they should remember that it will rarely be the fault of the poor sod who ends up dealing with them.

I use to work at Target and this is exactly what the store looked like for the holidays. I can't tell you how many parents have yelled at me because we were sold out of the toy they wanted for their precious brat that just destroyed the store. Not sure why I was being yelled at, I don't have kids and I didn't buy all the toys!!!!!!

Good grief. When an employee is assisting me and we discover together that the item I wanted is out of stock, they always politely say "I'm sorry", and I always respond "It's okay -- it's not your fault. Thanks for your help". It costs nothing to be a decent human being.

This is what happens when you raise your kids without making them take responsibility for their own actions. This is also what happens when you commercialize Christmas to the point of forgetting what the season is all about. It's not about the perfect tree or the perfect gift. It's about family, it's about faith and treating your fellow man with love and understanding. If you treat people like trash then you ARE trash. Show a little respect!

Greed and entitlement. Whoever started that "The customer is always right" c**p anyhow? The customer is usually *wrong*. They don't know the store's buying/stocking dynamics, they don't know the cash flow or the amount of monthly sales. They just *want*. And as far as I'm concerned, they can want all they like; it's just not there! Oh, I've met my fair share of "don't bother me; I'm just here to et a paycheck' types in retail, but for the most part they'll try to help you.

Yikes. I had no idea it was this bad. I always get all my x-mas shopping done by early December at the latest, so I don't add to this madness. Also, x-mas time or not, I leave the store at least as neat as when I came in, if not neater; And to be pleasant to employees. I feel like that's just basic human decency? I can't fathom why people think it's okay to treat employees like dirt. I hope karma comes along and bites these people on the a*s. There's no excuse for that kind of behaviour. None. Anyone who has to work retail over the holidays- I wish I could give all of you a hug. I can't imagine what that's like. People can be so horrible.

I shop all year long, because I will NOT go into the stores in December! I'm crippled, and people are horrible to me as well--not to mention I can't get down aisles like those shown! I generally apologise to employees, because I know I'm making extra work for them. And, you know, 'please' and thank you' go a long way, too. These aren't servants--and I'd say that to servanys as well.

I feel you, I worked in retail for a long time and I was very good at my job, so good that I was the person who would get all the worst clients sent to them because I was very patient, kind and very good at smoothing things over. Long story short I ended up quitting for my mental health. I remember crying in the car on my way home during the holidays, I started hating Christmas, I started to despise people and I didn't like who I was becoming so I quit before who I was was totally lost. I'm now starting to like the holidays again.

I don't go out to stores during Christmas time. From Thanksgiving to Christmas, I avoid any store. Thousands of people, all pushing, shoving, yelling, stealing, ripping, and leaving a wake of wreckage like these pictures...all in the name of "Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men.". Oh, and frankly, I'm not Christian and so don't celebrate the holiday. I don't want to be a hypocrite. Money really should not even have a purpose during the holidays, except the help those in need.

The holidays are THE WORST time of the year. I work for a large bank, & from Black Friday until January 2nd I cannot count how many times I'm called the B-word or MF, besides the screaming, for issues of their own mistakes. And when you kindly explain what they missed, the abuse gets worse. Our department literally has a 'Zen Room' that you can go into to regroup after a bad call. There has been a line to get in the door since Thanksgiving!

Definitely not unusual, especially at stores that require you to push out stock to where there's no room and customers generally don't give a damn about the work you need to do to make sure everything's in its place. Retail makes you hate people. Glad I don't have to do that anymore.

Not cashiering, but last Christmas season, I was a "santa's helper" at the local mall. I thought it would be wonderful because of all the children. But no matter what I did (greeting, photographing, showing the digital images, or cashiering), the parents were absolutely awful. They would yell, complain, belittle, and just generally be rude. I spent many nights crying in my car before I was able to drive home to be with my child.

It doesn't stop at Christmas. The first two weeks of January are even worse for Customer Service/Return Associates. There are nightmare lines of people exchanging items or returning items for cash. One year my store decided that it would be a great service/gimmick to accept items "No Questions Asked". I was yelled at because: we didn't have the size/color/style/model they wanted (even if it wasn't from our store), lines too long, took too long to look up item prices when they had no receipt, or couldn't give full price return when the item was bought on sale. One woman brought in 3 bags of baby clothes to return, none from our store. It took an hour to look up all the item codes to find out if it was ours and if not, what was closest to it to determine an approximate cost to figure out how much money to return to her. All those things went to corporate where they were processed and then trashed. Brand new.

A major portion of the problem is that stores try to keep employee costs low, ie: not hiring enough people or not using them to keep their profits up at this time of year. And the really s****y companies fire them on Christmas eve, I worked at WalMart and personally saw this happen, and cash drawers wouldn't hardly shut for the money the store raked in!

I haven’t Christmas shopped in brick and mortar stores for decades because of c**p people like this. I started ordering gifts way back in the 1980s, when you had to request a paper catalog, fill out the enclosed order form, put the form and a check for the calculated total in the (also enclosed) envelope, stick a stamp on it, mail it, and wait for the boxes to arrive. You had to shop early back then, because doing an exchange or return took so long. It’s so much easier, not to mention faster, now. No searching forever for parking, no fighting crowds, no long lines, no carrying multiple bags of gifts around or schlepping them to the car to store in the trunk while you buy more, no sweating in multiple overheated stores while wearing a winter coat, no stress. I’m usually almost done before the beginning of December, except for a little bit of last minute stuff, like food. Makes for a more enjoyable holiday season. Love it.

If you want to get an idea of just how common rude and terrible customers are, read just a few of the entries at NotAlwaysRight.com (i.e., The terrible people who believe "The Customer is Always Right" and so demand to have whatever they want, however they want, and treat store workers however they want.) The overwhelming gratefulness the customer service workers feel when another customer sticks up for them, or tells off the rude person is palpable -- and even the tiniest bit of encouragement, respect, or gift (something as small as a piece of candy) can bring some of them to absolute tears of joy. (Unfortunately, store/restaurant managers are so terrified of a bad review online that they inadvertently train customers to be nightmarish by rewarding terrible behavior.)

Count me amongst the numbers that can't stand Xmas. 10 years dealing with that kind of abuse, plus permanent neck damage from bad ergonomics + Xmas lines. I go into hibernation mode. I need to limit my exposure to it as much as possible. Plus, Xmas can some years end up being half a year, by the time you do Xmas in July, Xmas stuff hitting stores in Sept, then boxing day sales that sometimes leak into February....it is a one day (arguably two) holiday!!

The Black Friday (black Thursday now) crush is primarily caused by the retailer, probably Walmart. Before the Black Friday sales, there were weekly sales to get people in the stores with rain checks if they sold out. I hate crowds and I did only one early morning Black Friday to discover that the retailer had not stocked enough items for everyone who wanted one with no rain check option. Never again. Just wasn't worth it. It's all just stuff that we throw away eventually anyway.

I know from working at the store mentioned by you, the out of stock problem on things seen as “big ticket” or items “heavily advertised due to price” a great deal of our Black Friday stock was not decided by the individual stores or the individual stores managers or anyone who actually was in the store. The store manager gets a few emails before the start of the season detailing the Black Friday sales paper, and a list of everything that is listed in the paper, it’s SKU#, the normal price and sales price, and quantity the store was getting for Black Friday and if it’s getting refilled at sale price.

Welfare clients are just as bad, if not worse. "What do you mean, we don't get extra money/food stamps/whatever they want at Christmas?" Or they want to travel for the season. Or they have another new baby and they need/want ______ . I don't miss it at all.

I so don't miss working in retail! I worked in a Canadian chocolate/ice cream store and Christmas, valentines and Easter were HELL. I thought that was bad until I managed a small bakery that was in a downtown mall in Ottawa (Canada's capital) and open for Canada day (Canada's birthday). I don't think I'd go back for all the money in the world

If every customer put everything back neatly, some of you retail workers wouldn't have a job. I'm not advocating being slobs, but quit your whining about this. You get paid by the hour, so whether you're picking up after customers, or serving them, you are still getting paid the same.

Clearly you've never been in a service job, because you'd understand that your shift is filled with mandatory duties which keep you busy no matter how many customers are present or how they handle the merchandise. In situations like this, employees should receive hazard pay at twice their normal rate.

??? I'm Australian, I worked retail in Australia a number of years ago, and you are wrong. I have seen stuff like that and worse-- fitting rooms PILED with garments, stuff everywhere, neatly packed giftpacks unrwapped just to check the size/scent etc.... people clamoring over themselves to get a bargain-- lets not forget that in Paramatta yesterday people crushed each other at the chances to get 5-10 dollar gift cards at Westfield. People waited til midnight with kids for a piddly gift card amount... like if you think it doesn't happen here you're wrong. EDIT: my post got glitched so I deleted and had to repost.

Also, x-mas time or not, I leave the store at least as neat as when I came in, if not neater; And to be pleasant to employees. I feel like that's just basic human decency? I feel you, I worked in retail for a long time and I was very good at my job, so good that I was the person who would get all the worst clients sent to them because I was very patient, kind and very good at smoothing things over. Long story short I ended up quitting for my mental health. I remember crying in the car on my way home during the holidays, I started hating Christmas, I started to despise people and I didn't like who I was becoming so I quit before who I was was totally lost.

I need to limit my exposure to it as much as possible. Plus, Xmas can some years end up being half a year, by the time you do Xmas in July, Xmas stuff hitting stores in Sept, then boxing day sales that sometimes leak into February....it is a one day (arguably two) holiday!!

I am coming up with a list of underappreciated people: 1. Police 2. Retail workers 3. Teachers 4. Waiters/Waitresses 5. Cashiers 6. Ordinary people who do things out of the kindness in their heart (these are very rare, thank you if you are one!) If I missed any plz comment

I guess some stores employ more staff. Boxing day at Zara's was like those pictures above. Everything everywhere. Walked into H & M and it was neat and tidy but packed with shoppers

I don't know how this trend started. I have hardly gone shopping in years, but recently went to Kohl's for shoes. I could not believe there were just open boxes everywhere. Nobody puts back what they take out and try on! I mean, seriously, didn't any of them have mothers to teach them how to behave like responsible people?! I was SHOCKED.

They have mothers who taught them, "Don't bother; this is what we pay the employees to do."

How can people act like that?! What is wrong with them? Stress is no excuse.

Those ppl should be forced to stay in the store until they leave every mess the left completely clean. Or at least receive some kind of penalty fee for the chaos caused.... this surely is prohibited tho...

I had a vacuum thrown at me because the color wasn’t like the advertisement showed, clothes and other things over the years. After my last one 3/5 years ago (I honestly don’t know how long it’s been) and won’t even go shopping on the days

Welfare clients are just as bad, if not worse. "What do you mean, we don't get extra money/food stamps/whatever they want at Christmas?" Or they want to travel for the season. Or they have another new baby and they need/want ______ . I don't miss it at all.

I wouldn't want to worm retail unless my life depends on it! Sorry for those employees that do and they should get a temporary raise during the holidays!

I’m sorry Nashville, I’m sure not all of you are like that! I can’t believe this type of savage behaviour exists! I’ve never ever seen anything like that!

Totally agree - I go out of my way to be extra nice to retail staff during the Christmas season. Too many people are agitated, rushed & just plain angry. A little niceness goes a long way!

I've been known to tell other customers off for being ignorant a******s. And I usually end it with, "And why did you wait till the last minute, anyway? Are you too lazy to shop responsibly?"

I don't know why people had to be such a@#$%^$ this time of year. I use to work retail and even at a deli in my local grocery store when I was younger. It breaks my heart the way some people behave this time of year. :(

This never happens in Australia. I wonder if it's isolated to America, it wouldn't surprise me if it was..
