Mom Refuses To Pay Babysitter Because She ‘Gets Free Ice Cream And Day Of Fun’, So She Shows Her ‘Deleted’ Texts

Being a (good) mother is definitely a tough job. But if you use this as an excuse to scamming people of their honestly earned money, you’re an a**hole. Recently, Reddit user VortexThing posted an unthinkable conversation between his sister and the woman she worked as a babysitter for, and you have to see it to believe it.

“My sister’s name is Kristen, which is, unfortunately, all I can give you,” VortextThing told Bored Panda. “She had never met [the woman] before, but my sister has her own babysitting website in our town, so that’s how the woman contacted her.”

“Beforehand, my sister described her as ‘respectful and courteous,’ which made it all the weirder that the woman attempted to turn around and scheme her for free services,” they added.

Scroll down to check out their exchange and let’s hope that the kids of this cheap lady will find another role model.

“Sister sent me this…she was blocked immediately after”

UPDATE: “Many recommended a small claims court, which would help in small legal dealings such as this one. After speaking with my sister about her options, we decided that a court case is what we would do as a last resort. Yesterday, we decided to call the husband on his personal phone. It took a few tries to get through to him, but he eventually picked up and was quite sheepish about the whole free work thing. Basically, the conversation said something to the effect of ‘yeah, I’ll talk to her about it.'”

‘Mr. [Name], we are aware you are reading our messages. We have consistently tried to reason and work with you, and it is honestly quite laughable that you are refusing to pay. After consultation with friends

^^these other friends were Reddit users!^^

We have decided we will be using a Small Claims Court if you do not return us the $128 in cash that you rightfully owe. You will have to go through legal fees and court proceedings, and it will certainly cost you more than what you owe us. So, as soon as you and your wife stop acting like children and face the people you owe money to in person, we may be able to have a reasonable discussion.’

Guess what happened? Within thirty minutes, my sister was unblocked from the mother’s phone, and the cash is set to return today at 2 pm.”

People had a lot to say about this crazy situation

Idk, where they are, but in Ireland my 90 year old neighbor uses c**t to describe anything. The weather, her cat, a stuck door, the PM, the road, pretty much anything you can think of. It shocked me at first but I have come to understand it's cultural. C**t doesn't have the same stigma in the rest of the English speaking world, as it does in Canada or the United States.

When did this site become Jerry Springer? Of course there are always people who are being jerks in this world. Why should a classy site like boredpanda bring attention to the bottom of the barrel behavior.

When I was a kid and did some babysitting, the mother kidnapped me for 48 hours and left me with her 3 kids in a house with no phone. I didn't know where I was. My mom ended up calling the police and later taking the woman to small claims court on my behalf for the 48 hours of babysitting I did.

And even when showed proof, she still doesn't agree.... i Dont know what is up with this people. The babysitter clearly said she needs the money for textbooks, and that is the whole point of her babysitting even tho she kinda likes the kids...

My adventures in babysitting: I was about 11, and a neighbor (my mom's friend) asked me to babysit. I was there all evening, and she didn't pay me a dime. About a week later, she asked me to babysit again, and I refused. Got in a fight with my mom because mom had told her I would do it for free. "Her husband is in jail. She can't afford to pay a babysitter." Well, that wasn't my problem. Fool me once.....

If ice-cream and a day with kids is so rewarding, why get a babysitter? Throw in reruns of Barney the Dinosaur and she'll wonder why she ever needed time away from the kids! :)

To be honest I haven't seen any messages about the kids perception of this yet. Sounds like they had a great day with a good sitter. Then probably then heard their mother slagging her off. I don't know how old these kids are but they're probably confused. They probably have a number of different sitters and an angry b****y mother. Let's hope they don't grow up wondering why their lovely sitter never came back to be told that she was evil or some s**t. I've been aware of situations like this. People who have money sometimes have it because they refuse to spend it.

It's very outrageous seeing something like this. Poor girl at least she kept evidence and had her brother for backup. The swindler is unbelievable and I feel sorry for the girl having wasted her time and energy, as well as being scolded and treated unfairly. If she can get her money back that would be good, if not then learn a life lesson and from now on always charge before providing services to people; and do not trust people/strangers completely. This post brought back my memory of an incident, where I encountered the same experience. A girl tricked me into tutoring her for 3 hours, promised to pay me by e-transfer because she didn't bring cash on her first day to class, and promised to come back for more lessons. She left my place hurriedly and of course she did not come back. After asking her for the money for the next three days and she used all sorts of excuse and lies, I finally realized that I was deceived.

Unlike this girl I had no written evidence about the payment agreement, everything was verbal. I felt I was such a fool for being innocent, trusting and incautious. She took away my study materials, my time and energy consumed and most importantly my trust for her. It was a harsh, cold, brutal life lesson. I'm not thankful for it because it's painful; but I'll remember it to save myself from more pains in the future.

I would definitely go to small claims court because 1) Taking care of any kids for 8 hours is hard work 2) Payment was agreed on and there is proof 3) The mother also badmouthed not just the sitter but all the work she has done. S**t when people realize that you don’t get anything for free and when has babysitting ever been free? Take the kids to grandparents if you want it to be free! Day of fun and ice cream. To hell with that! It’s around 13,50€/hour. A good salary but if it was agreed on, you should pay instead of being a c**t yourself. A little respect goes a long way! Also taking care of kids is also a profession and 8 hours is a workday. Who would waste a day for free if they weren’t related to the kids and even so a little compensation is in order even if your relatives are taking care of your kids. Maybe not money but a nice gesture like bottle of wine and a thank you.

i think nanny has to use billing system and ask minimum per hour, experinced and educated, who teach kids and know how plays and games has to be paid more. Then nanny who dont have fun whit kids and kids are crying and mentally torturing children has to be fined, taken to police station from abuse. Or parent who has been raised kids who dont have fun and dont enjoy life.

It is called "The Hooker Principle" and anyone in a services business is best to consider how it applies to the services they offer.. The basis of the principle is that "the value of services greatly diminish once they have been rendered"...Either get paid up front, or have a documented agreement... Check out the small-claims court public records. If she's been taken to SC court before, you may be able to find out about it and you can mention it to the court at the time of your own SC trial. Then, at trial, ask if she has ever done this (stiffed anybody) before. If she says "no", whip out the copies of the court's records of her having been named as a defendant, and offer them as "impeachment" of her in-court (perjured) statement.

Before you file in small claims, you need to send a "demand letter", certified mail, demanding payment. In it, say you will include collection costs and list them: court filing, cost to have the papers served, any travel costs to get you to court, any wages you lose spending a half day in court. I've done this a couple of times and both times got promptly paid - they realize that not only will they have to pay, but the amount they owe will end up being a lot more, maybe double.

If you don't have a contract with the scope of work and terms of payment clearly spelt out, then it's 50% upfront and 50% after the delivery of work. Walk away if the person didn't agree to the upfront payment, or haggles when you turn up at the door-step.

In the US if you can find where they bank, you can get the court to issue an order to the county sheriff, who in turn orders the bank to seize your money from the account. You can also put a lien against a vehicle or any property with a title, and if they sell it the court will order them to pay or face contempt charges.

In a lot of states a verbal contract witnessed by a third party is considered binding. in this case the third party would be anyone that read the messages.

Hey Paul, you remember when you graduated from MIT with your Masters and your first job was with NASA working for ice cream? Yeah mom... that was great! And don't forget that part of my contract allowed me to look at kittens on the internet for half hour a day instead of eating lunch! Right... and you lost your girlfriend, your car, got evicted, lost all your credit cards and you ended up living in our attic for three years. Well mom, if you're going to mock me then I want you to know that I'm not that same guy any more. Now I'm getting a full buffet lunch AND I still get to look at the kittens. So who's laughing now? Everyone. At you. Moron.

Just for the record, DO NOT EVER THREATEN LEGAL ACTION OR LAWSUITS WITHOUT FOLLOWING THROUGH. sorry for shouting. This is actually form of intimidation, which in most places, is a crime. where I work... it's actually considered a form of assault, and apparently when add theft of services (aka not paying for parking in a private parking lot and bitching the guard out to the point he- that's me- has to call the cops...) becomes a felony.

When my son went to daycare, the woman that watched him also handled three kids from the same family. She didn't charge outrageous fees, but she was having a hard time getting payment from the parents of these three kids. Turns out mommy and daddy were going through a divorce. The mother kept insisting that the father was going to pay for the daycare. The father was shocked to hear this. The mother was refusing to let the father see the kids (she was trying to blackmail him into paying outrageous child support.) The daycare owner cut a deal with him. Pay for half the bill and she'd let the father come visit the kids when they were at daycare. Unfortunately the mother caught onto it and pulled the kids from daycare. Last I heard, the owner was taking the mother to court with the father as a witness.

I'm so disheartened that Bored Panda keeps trending these ridiculous, most likely fake, clickbait articles about how awful women are. I used to love the stories here. They were original and often uplifting. I really don't care about how one woman, who probably was completely made up, was acting like a jerk. It's like every other day with this nonsense. How do we make it stop?

As a 14 year old I usually get paid $5.00 an hour per kid and I can't drive or anything. For an adult who can drive places, she could be charging $8.00 an hour per kid, and if the lady has two kids that'd be $16.00 an hour. Seems pretty fair tbh.

When I was a kid and did some babysitting, the mother kidnapped me for 48 hours and left me with her 3 kids in a house with no phone. I didn't know where I was. My mom ended up calling the police and later taking the woman to small claims court on my behalf for the 48 hours of babysitting I did.

After speaking with my sister about her options we decided that this is what we would do as a last-case resort. Yesterday, we decided to call the husband on his personal phone. It took a few tries to get through to him, but he eventually picked up and was quite sheepish about the whole thing. Basically, the conversation said something to the effect of ‘yeah, I’ll talk to her about it.'” “Since […] he was ignoring [us], we decided to send him the following text: ‘Mr. [Name], we are aware you are reading our messages. We have consistently tried to reason and work with you, and it is honestly quite laughable that you are refusing to pay. After consultation with friends ^^these other friends were reddit users!^^ we have decided we will be using a Small Claims Court if you do not return us the $128 in cash that yo

I am always amazed with parents : are your children the most precious thing you have !!! But why SO many parents are SO BAD at paying good money for the care of their dear little ones. I never could understand that.

next time get cash in advance...you will have to show a written signed contract to win anything in small claims court...you will also be out your filing fee costs and your time after you lose...I would call up everybody you two know in common & tell them what happened...DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN WRITING...let everyone know what a jerk this person is...be sure & tell families with teen daughters who might sit for them...

This could be a fake text. The hue is the "blocked" text message is not that dark of a green in an iPhone. It's of a lighter bright green.
