“It’s My Birthday, Too!” Artist Responds To Choosing Beggar With Their Own Trick, And They Immediately Lose It

Choosing beggars are their own breed. They go through life using logic other people can’t even process and remain quite a mystery. However, reddit user /u/II-I-Hulk-I-II is one of the few people that understand it. Recently, when a potential client messaged them, asking for a 50% discount on their services because “it was their birthday,” the artist applied the same logic and quickly reduced them to curse words.

After some commenters started complaining about the math, /u/II-I-Hulk-I-II said:  “The point of the joke is that she wants 50% off the original value of the product which is $10. So, I want the same discount applied in reverse as it is my birthday also; so if she wants $10 off, I’m adding $10 on.”

“I didn’t mean to state that I was adding 50% of the already discounted price because that wouldn’t make sense with the joke, although, I can see how the wording may have suggested that to some people.”

People appreciated the witty comeback

The poster isn't good at maths. If you take off 50% from 20, yo have 10. And if you add 50% of 10, to 10, it's 15. Not 20. Just fyi.

How is that person a choosing beggar? They are neither choosing nor begging. Also, what's wrong with asking about a discount? Some companies do have special offers for birthdays or larger orders. Being a jerk about not getting one is unacceptable of course. So is being a jerk about a simple question.

Me, for example, I'd never ask for a discount. The artist does not give a s**t if it is your bday, your grandma's nor anyone's but his/hers. It may be your bday, but the amount of work is the same for the artist

Shouldn't it be "choosy beggar", not "choosing beggar"? Or am I missing something?

It's a funny joke, but she did ask nicely and you said yes, only to screw her over in the end in the name of fun. You could have just said no. This is not a good way to deal with people.

I actually think that the OP was the rude one. The person asking for the photo very politely inquired if there would be a discount (some people love to bargain, there's nothing wrong with that). The OP first said yes and then took it back for no reason, when they could have just refused in the first place. The client didn't act out until the end, imo.

The point of the matter is that, in general, most people don't appreciate how much work actually goes into artwork/illustration. There's no harm in trying to negotiate a better deal on something that is already created, but when it's a commissioned piece there can really be no haggling — the artist is creating something SOLELY for the purchaser. Do you expect all of us artists to give massive discounts? We have to pay the bills too you know. Do you try to negotiate the cost of your electric bill every month? Or your rent/mortgage? OP wasn't being rude - just making light of the ridiculous situation he found himself in.

Should have just said discounted price is 40, as 50% of 40 is 20, so he is getting 50 purse cents. He wouldn't have figured out the math. Just imagine his joy getting a 20 deal for 40, huh?
