Me, for example, I'd never ask for a discount. The artist does not give a s**t if it is your bday, your grandma's nor anyone's but his/hers. It may be your bday, but the amount of work is the same for the artist

Asking an artist for a 50% discount of a $20!!! item is being a beggar in my eyes. If you can't pay $20 for professional work, then do it yourself.

I'm aware of certain restaurants offering discounts for birthdays and wedding anniversaries, but I've never heard of graphic/web services offering them for life events. Asking about price breaks on large orders is fine (a lot of companies do offer them -- it encourages repeat business and earns them more money). Asking a graphic or web designer for a birthday discount simply looks like someone trying to be cheap. Granted, I would have just said "no birthday discounts, they're not a normal feature of the industry."

They're most probably lying about the birthday thing, rudely show "amazement" because the price is 20$ (!!!) Then ask for a huge discount. I get that they weren't particularly rude but to me it seemed like begging a bit and generally an a*****e move

OP is an artist not a company. It's disrespectful to ask for a discount. Art is not a necessity, its a luxury. Can't afford it? Then don't buy it.

The point of the matter is that, in general, most people don't appreciate how much work actually goes into artwork/illustration. There's no harm in trying to negotiate a better deal on something that is already created, but when it's a commissioned piece there can really be no haggling — the artist is creating something SOLELY for the purchaser. Do you expect all of us artists to give massive discounts? We have to pay the bills too you know. Do you try to negotiate the cost of your electric bill every month? Or your rent/mortgage? OP wasn't being rude - just making light of the ridiculous situation he found himself in.

Whatever you say. But to me, if you ask for a product's price and find out it's 20 dollars for a professional logo and rudely doubt the price (”20???" - like "are you serious???") then ask for a massive discount (and probably lying about the birthday thing) is RUDER.

Oh dear, I see we have a lot of 'artists actually need to pay the bills to survive' haters in the comment section today. As it is, $20 is already an obscenely low price for something even like a profile picture. We're talking time investment here on the artist's part. It will often take artists *at least* two hours to complete a picture- for simple pictures. Yes, the artist may have been a bit rude, but I'm sure they'd pretty much 'had it up to here' with people trying to find some way not to pay them. 50% off is a bit much, even for a 'birthday' (which the artist has no way of knowing is true or not).

If you trying to buy a dress at store that doesn't have a discount label, did you just casually ask for discount because this is your birthday at the cashier?
